Education / Re: Should There Be Free Education In Nigeria? by Borntoreign(m): 10:34pm On Apr 16, 2012
Okija_juju: Free Education is a NO! NO!

Education should not be free.

Basic education, yes!! but after J.S.S 3, education should be on merit and sports scholarship. Everything that has been subsidized has been destroyed. A University should be free to charge any amount it deems necessary for it to run at full steam. A university should be free to source for funds through tuition, research for companies and industries and other means. BUT, this habit of free free free has wrecked the Universities.

The Government in Nigeria poorly funds our Universities, then they sit in their fancy offices and houses and fix the cost of tuition for the Universities and still expect a university that s already running on a shoe string budget to provide top quality education. HOW!!!!!

After JSS3, any student that flunks WAEC should be sent to a vocational school to learn a craft or should be allowed to sit for WAEC again and try and pass, only that on his second attempt, the cost would be borne by the parents of the students. . . Upon passing into Senior Secondary, a scholarship system is put in place. For Academically gifted students who can hit a set average yearly, their tuition is covered 100% by the government. For those B & C students, they are on a partial scholarship (60% government), and those that are skillful and can maintain a set average as well yearly, they would have a special provision for them. The truth is that we must make the students work for their scholarship not just throw it blanket for everybody and anybody. This habit of free education all the way is really destroying our educational system. . Little wonder majority of those students who flunk external exams are from public schools.

To hell with free anything or subsidized anything. Provide us jobs, provide us security, provide us electricity, and provide us good schools. . . We will foot our own bills, Insurance companies and bank schemes would take care of tuition costs, security would ensure that we can hussle through the night, In the developed countries and continent with all the billions of excess dollars they have, EDUCATION and BASIC AMENITIES like water, electricity and telecomms are neither free nor subsidized.

Whoever thinks that education should be free in Nigeria should read this http://odili.net/news/source/2012/apr/15/821.html

Missy_B: I have yet to think out a good reason why the willing man who cannot afford to get an education shouldn't be given an opportunity.

This is the reason we talk about subsidized quality education and not free education. When education is not free everyone pays. Those who cannot afford the price gets help from the govt.

Kilode?!:

Gaddemit!! shocked

Are those cutlasses? Those guys were cutting people down with matchetes on a crowded highway??

Did you see that man in brown running around swinging his cutlass?

WTH??

In this video, Late Adedibu was talking about the security budget as if it was his personal property. He wanted 25% of the security budget of Oyo State to him, then the rest of the state can share the remaining 75%. This is very sad. It shows the real situation of politics in Nigeria.

On the other hand, there can be no smoke without fire. We need to find out the agreement btw Ladoja and Adedibu before Ladoja became the gov. How much did Adedibu contributed to (or rather invested in ) his election campaign? This brings us to another topic in Nigeria politics, "campaign finance". We need to have a serious campaign finance laws in Nigeria. The law should make it difficult for any individual to give more than 100,000 naira to any candidate running for political office. All candidates should published their donors and how they spend the money on the website for everyone to see. This way no one (such as Adedibu) can not lay claim on the ownership of a governorship campaign. If Gov. Mimiko can tell us how he gets money to fight his legal battle against Agagu, we will understand the reason for his disagreement with Tinubu camp. Let there be no doubt, I respect him for the legal battle against Agagu administration.

We need to get serious with campaign finance in Nigeria. I believe that the fight against corruption start with the campaign finance law then we can hold each elected office holder accountable for his/her actions. No more God father/financier influence on the administration.

dayokanu: Wow.

This is really sad.

Anyone who tries to bring the PDP back into the SW should be hanged

I m not a fan of Oyinlola. However, these videos does not in any way implication Oyinlola. It is just the words of mouth which may be fabricated. We need more implicating evidence.

GboyegaD:

The few times I have heard parties campaign, the extent to which they promised free education is up to secondary school level which I believe is very reasonable and highly sustainable if priorities are well set. This said, I would like to see a situation where the PTA levy paid by students which goes to the confers of the school is used towards improving the standard of the school as well.

I will love to see the governments dividing each town into districts, collect property tax from each district and use 70% of tax from each district to improve education in that district. The remaining 30% can be used to help the financially challenged districts on urgent need bases. If we do this, our primary and secondary schools will look different in the next 10 years.
Politics / Re: I Have No Plan To "Islamise" Osun State Or Secede From Nigeria - Aregbesola by Borntoreign(m): 5:53am On Apr 16, 2012
There is nothing wrong with each state having its own anthem and flag. However, the Nigeria anthem, flag and emblem are superior to those of any state.
To be honest, in my opinion, ACN is as corrupt as PDP. I challenge Gov Aregbesola, the self proclaim "omoluabi" to answer the following questions:
1. How did you get money to finance your campaign in the first place??
2. Who are the donors that donate to his campaign and legal battle afterwards?
3. In the spirit of transparency that you claim to represent, can you (Gov Aregbesola) publish the name of all such donors and how much they contribute to your campaign and the legal battle followed? This can be published on the internet for everyone to see.
4. Can Gov Aregbesola list all the companies that have get any contract under his administration and the board of those companies on the website?
5. Can Gov Aregbesola tell us how many days he actually spent within the boundaries of Osun State since he became the governor of Osun State?

Gov Aregbesola, you mentioned that you want to give tablet computer to every senior secondary school students in the state. I think that money should be put to better use than the tablet. We need to renovate the buildings in public schools first and make sure that is electricity connections in the schools. The teacher needs to be trained on how to use the tablets as well so that they can teach students in turn. What exactly are the students suppose to use the tablet for? Does Gov Aregbesola ready to provide the software that are needed for physics, chemistry and so on? May be Gov Aregbesola is technologically challenge. What good is a tablet without internet connections? Even if you provide internet connections in every schools (which is impossible), what about the internet connections at home? How many parents are even computer literate enough to help the student do the homework on the tablet? Who will provide the technical support for all these technology?
This will end up to be another failed project in Osun State. I dont believe that government should be computer for all students. Parent can do that if they can avoid it. What we need now is the mass renovation of all public schools in Nigeria not tablet computer.

I appreciate all of the contributions so far. I asked this question because of the campaign manifesto of the ACN to provide free education to everyone. Especially the "dumb" governor of Osun State. Let me state clearly that I m not a fan of any of the political party in Nigeria. All of them are thieves and rogues. I have a great respect for Chief Obafemi Awolowo. However, isn't it the time for ACN to rewrite its manifestos to be in line with the 21th century? In my opinion, if Chief Awolowo is still alive today, he would have rewrite his manifestos.
I visited my primary and secondary school (in Osun State) last year, I was crying when I saw the condition of the buildings. All the buildings in those school are nothing but death traps for the students and teachers. The classes were overcrowded and under funded. In fact, what I saw were better imagined than real. In spite of these conditions, Gov Aregbesola did nothing to improve the situation of public school in Osun State but he has the time to analyze who is suppose to be "omoluabi" and who is not suppose to be "omoluabi". I wonder what is his definition of "omoluabi"?
This is my message to all the politicians who will rather lie than to tell the truth- Nigeria needs subsidized quality education not free education.

Politics / Re: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by Borntoreign(m): 2:19am On Apr 16, 2012
I believe that Nigeria is neither rich nor poor. The problem in this country is the greediness of everyone-from the presidency to the citizens. If everyone sweep before his/her door. The whole street and city will be clean.
