The tertiary education sector is sitting on a time bomb. The Federal Government is yet to honour its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
I don’t think the Federal Government wants ASUU to go on another strike but if this situation extends beyond the October 31 deadline, then ASUU will very likely go on strike again.
President of the association, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi had, in announcing the “conditional suspension” of the previous strike, said the action was taken after the union gave the Federal Government a deadline of the end of October to fulfil its promises.
We don’t want another sttrike, however short it may be. The universities and their students are yet to recover from the last one.
Exams that should have long been concluded are only being rounded off now. The holiday that is supposed to follow has been shortened. The academic calender has been disrupted.
We can’t afford to have further disruption of our academic calendar.
No one knows how many Nigerian students were involved in accidents and how many died on our bad roads when traveling to and from school at the commencement and cancellation of the last ASUU’s strike. We can’t afford to risk the lives of these students again.
In my article on the last ASUU strike, I stated that the Federal Government had to find a way to institutionalise swift response to prevent ASUU from going on strike in future.
I beseech the Federal Government to do the needful and avert this impending calamity.

Will anyone slap you if you lay the blame at the appropriate quarters? The duty of the Senate is to make laws and not institute impotent investigative committees as you rightly put it, what you have listed out are mere symptoms.

The main disease is the rottenness of the executive arm of government whose duty it is to fight corruption and prosecute offenders. This arm has gone to sleep. Unfortunately we didn't elect the Senate president directly. We elected buharri because we thought he could give us a good account of anything but he has failed woefully.

The billions dug up from every corner of Nigeria has been forgotten on the rat infested office.

Blame the executive for the problems in the legislature.

Everyone is free to share his thoughts, but thats my own view....

The Nigeria senate is impotent. So impotent that it engages in theatrical probes to conceal the absence of a legislative manhood.
I have followed the senate closely. In fact, I covered that arm of the national assembly in the past. So, I can say with a verisimilitude of certainty that I have copious knowledge of the institution.
The senate has become a reactionary cry-baby. Its only approach to issues of volcanic magnitude is conducting ineffectual probes. Probe this, probe that. I have become weary of the countless insipid probes.
The nucleic problem is that the probes are not usually followed with pristine actions. Perhaps, the senate uses them as a spectre of distraction or as a means of “toasting” Nigerians -“we are on top of the situation” – while its members gormandise the coveted national cake. I am sure every Nigerian knows the meaning of this abused and trite clause – “we are on top of the situation”.
On Tuesday, the upper legislative chamber embarked on a futile exercise of braggadocio – to probe the circumstances of how Abdulrasheed Maina, alleged pension thief, who was on exile in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), breezed into the country; how he was reinstated into the civil service, and how he was promoted to director at the ministry of interior.
Despite, the wise counsel of Senator Tayo Alasodura that “we (senate) should not always duplicate the executive; if the executive has ordered an investigation we should not order another one”, the chest-thumping senate still resolved to ask its committees on interior and anti-corruption, public service and establishment to investigate the matter. And I ask, to what end?
It is clear that the senate’s answer to every problem is probe – often without result. The upper legislative chamber also appears to savour duplicating the executive. Let me explain.
A few days ago when Ibe Kachiwku’s jarring missive of allegations against Maikanti Baru, NNPC GMD, ticked off a public outcry, the presidency ordered an immediate investigation of the claims. The senate, perhaps, not to be outdone, also asked its committee on petroleum to investigate the allegations. And I ask again, to what end? What has come out of all the previous probes on education, NNPC and power?
Why is the senate in a frantic chase of a will-o-the-wisp? I remember in March when the upper legislative chamber took its battle with the executive to Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service, the institution huffed and puffed like a wounded dragon, but to date there is no splinter of result from its investigation of the customs chief.
For the senate to be taken seriously, it must make resolutions from its investigations actionable. It must put gravitas to its functions. If it must probe, it should be ready to tell Nigerians the result and effect of the action.
It makes no sense the time and money spent investigating an issue, only for the findings to be tucked away in a webby shelf. Maybe, the senate is using “probes” to play to the gallery and to cloak its lazy schedule.
The upper legislative chamber must put oomph and gravitas to its probes.

Arsenal majority owner, Stan Kroenke, has insisted the club was right not to give into pressure and sack manager Arsene Wenger after last season.

A disappointing 2016/2017 campaign saw the Gunners fail to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades, although the club clinched the FA Cup.

Frustrations were high during the season among supporters, with banners being flown during game days calling for Wenger’s sacking.

At the end, Kroenke decided to give Wenger a two-year contract extension.

“Arsene is strong, he’s focused and I think he showed through all that,” Kroenke told the Daily Mirror ahead of the club’s Annual General Meeting.

“We always evaluate, and it’s fair to look at all the factors involved. But when you make decisions like that, you are weighing lots of different factors, but you hope that you weigh them correctly and come out with the right decision. I think we did.

“It’s easy to change coaches and people do it all the time. But the hardest thing is to replicate success and remain competitive,” Kroenke said.

“You have to approach it with clear-headedness, calmness, thinking for the long term rather than the short-term. An easy answer is it’s easy to do something. It’s harder not to do something.”
