bossmeek:
After that last visit to see Lucy in school, I went back home. I tried to be mindful of the fact that she now loved another, of which she denied. I still loved her but there was nothing I could do. Few days later, my call up letter for the National Youth Service came, I was posted to Calabar. So I thought, I should try to keep her out of my mind; after all, I was starting a new life.

When I got to camp, I was already looking so thin; imagine what the drills would do to me, I’ll just “disappear” in size. I went through a lot of stress prior to this, ranging from emotional stress with Lucy to financial stress. I tried to find myself multiple sources of income; the truth was I didn’t want to bother my parents anymore. From here on out, it was a new ball game entirely.

While in camp, I tried to build my life up once again; I wanted to start afresh. I made new friends, one of which was Benny, a sweet girl from the Niger Delta region. I still called Lucy; you won’t blame me; she was my first love. But she seemed to be avoiding me; I knew it was about Michael, she loved him, though she still denied it.

After four months without communication, I stopped trying. I was still close friends with Terry; and I made up my mind to start a relationship with her. When I asked her, she bluntly refused; saying that she didn’t want to taint our friendship.

A TRUE LIFE STORY

Akinyemi Jelili Oyelere was born and buttered in Imia hamlet, under Kajola Local Government, Oke-Ogun area, Oyo State Nigeria, in more than two decades ago into the folks of Akinyemi. They were seventeen in number in their family, one father, four wives and twelve children. His father had four wives and his mother was the third wife, he is the first child from his mother to his father and also number eight in general. The Education of all the children of Mr.

Akinyemi died at the border of secondary school, meaning that none of the children of Mr. Akinyemi attended higher institution, but Jelili strive to the extent that when he finished his secondary education in 2011, he had the determination to further but he failed woefully in WAEC and NECO. Later within the year, his father took him to an educated man in their village whose name is Mr. Segun. This man advised Mr. Akinyemi to let Jelili start SS3 afresh in another secondary school.

Jelili accepted and decided to go to Gegun High school in 2012. He spent a year in Ayetoro Oke while schooling in Gegun High School. When he finished SS3 in Gegun High school, he made up his mind to learn computer in Ibadan. Unfortunately for him, he could not speak English because he was baked with Yourba oven throughout his primary and secondary education.

When he got to Ibadan, he was taken to an literate for counseling. When the man asked Jelili the course he would like to study in higher institution, Jelili replied the man by saying "i want to read lawyer" He was questioned again but he was adamant about reading lawyer with confidence, and so the man concluded he didn't know anything. For that reason, he was advised to start afresh from JSS 1. Jelili was later taken to school to start afresh from SS1 in Community High School Alakia Isebo, Ibadan.
Jelili became more frustrated as life continued to throw all sorts of challenges at him. In 2013 when he started his Senior Secondary, he was ashamed because he couldn't speak good English nor could he write and relate with his classmates and teachers. But because he was determined and he perceived himself as a brave boy, he decided to persevere and not drop out like the others in his family.

He sat for WAEC for the 6th time in 2014 and he failed again, this time, woefully as he didn't have a single credit in the examination despite the fact that he read and fasted for 33 days towards the examination. He wept bitterly when he saw the result to the extent he couldn't eat, he was totally depressed, ready to stand up and give up.

Furthermore, Akinyemi Jelili Oyelere set himself aside and remained focus on doing all it would cost to shapen his educational pursit, to an extent that he would read a dictionary every day. He then went for the examination at University of Ibadan having read through the night with the hope that he would meet with his luck after the examination.

He rushed off to his exam centre at UI and he went with the first batch. He waited for so long, checking his cell phone awaiting his results since he was told he would see his score via SMS. Out of the league of student that sat for JAMB in Community High School Amakia Isebo in 2015 he had the highest mark. He desired nothing but the best for himself at the time, so he read for NECO exam and he passed. He sat for University of Ibadan post UTME and scored 51 out of nineteen thousand that sat for the examination. He found out that he was among the nine thousand that met up with general cut off mark which was 50.

He couldn't meet the cut-off mark for his initial course; sociology. So, he changed his course to Earlier Childhood Education but he wasn't offered an admission still.

However, as a result of his relentless efforts, he was offered an admission in the department of Local Government and Development Studies; The Polytechnic, Ibadan. He didn't hesitate to pay his acceptance fee in The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

During his ND days in The Polytechnic, Ibadan, he was the Assistant Political Editor of NALGADSS PRESS, Assistant Production Manager of Press Council and Vice President of National Association of Kajola Students.

In his second year in the school, he obtained another UTME form as a result of his love to study in the university and his preferred institution was Adekunle Ajasin in Akungba Akoko.

A day to his examination date in Adekunle Ajasin which is on a Monday, he had a terrible accident on his way to the school where the car he boarded summersaulted three times while approaching Asejire village. He was amazed to see himself still alive without a scratch. Also, when he got another option to transport himself to the school, again, he had an accident, though not as terrible as the first. That day, he passed the night in a thick bush.

He managed to write the examination in a traumatic condition with the fear of traveling back to Ibadan without another accident. Unfortunately for him, on his way to Polybadan, he had an accident. Thank God he is still alive to share his unforgettable story.

In the early days of December 2018, his chum, Majaro Ayodele who is a student of Obafemi Awolowo University motivated him to write poem because Ayo believed he could. Jelili at first, felt indifferent about this as he does not even have an idea of what poetry is. But, Majaro was adamant about this which prompted Jelili to write his first poem he titled "Gone were those days." Jelili sent the poem to his Facebook friend who is an Indan poet but he was depressed at the condemnation given to his poem.

He didn't give up on increasing his ability to write poetry, so he kept writing. In a bid to improve himself, he sent copies of his poems to the Poets President in Nigeria, Eriata Oribhabor to assist in editing. Later in 2016, he met the Vice Chairman of the Press Council; The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Comrade Dada Emmanuel who doubles to be an editor and a professional poet, he met him not while he was on campus as a poet but at the verge of his poetic career. Comrade Dada Emmanuel had dedicated his time to help in editing his poems. They had together reviewed two of his poems and since then, Akinyemi perceived Dada Emmanuel as his poetic mentor.

Akinyemi Jelili started participating in national and international competition in March 2019 and he won his first award of "poetic accolades" from HOME OF AFRICAN POETRY AND SPLENDID STORIES. The Theme of the poetry contest was "April Shower" and the participants were more than 50. He was one of the best 13 participants that was Awarded and more importantly, the Award motivated him to keep participating in online international contests.

At present, he participates in many international poetry contes such as; Poemarium group established by a noble poet Dr. Nk Sharma of India, Poetry planet created by Lovely Garcia, Poetry City established by Tobister Daniello of Nigeria, Poetry Abilities created by Young Francis, a Ghanian, Motivational Strips formed by an Indian, inked with magic established by Chanda John of Zambia etc.

The aforementioned platforms had impacted him positively and it had grown the wings of poetry which make him fly and soar higher in the sky.

Today, many of his poems and short stories have featured in both National and International Anthologies such THE PILLAR, FLORETS OF FANCY, LEGACY, SIGNATURE OF TRUTH, AFRICAN TALES, SONGS OF PEACE, PETALS OF WISDOM, INSIGHT etc.

In motivational Strips Group, an Anthology was proposed which called the attention of all Poets of the world to participate and which implies that ten best poems would be selected in each month for a year. The participation commenced in June 2019 which he participated in the first month. The participants in June were 28 in the globe and ten best poems were selected which when the result came out, out of the best ten poets, four Nigerian poets were selected, four India poets, one Bhutan and one Serriea Leone. Out of the best ten poets selected, he came first. The title of the anthology was SIGNATURE OF TRUTH. Also, he has received best poet of the week and best poet of the month.

Akinyemi Jelili Oyelere is now a Poet In Nigeria Student Ambassador, the General Secretary of Sustainable Development Club etc. He is now advocating for quality education to lay a legacy so that the generations would know truly its the best legacy.
