NATO is a political tool for the US but a security tool for most Europeans. It legitimatizes American aggression and it gives an illusion of a consensus among of the "civilized world" on the other hand, It helps the Eastern/Central Europeans to feel safe from Russia's Aggression. US Only hide behind NATO for political reasons not for military purpose at all!. In fact US is NATO
It keeps the Americans in , the Germans down and the Russians out as Lord Ismay put it.

The U.S has a lot at stake, and still has a sane leader. Would never be draw into a nuclear war and would never fight any kind of war with Russia . Russia has a sick ruler in a former KGB agent, having a terrible economy and everything on a nose dive (except his war in Ukraine and the rise of his popularity rating at home). Nuclear world powers don't just flex it(with the exception of a sick North Korea and Russia of late). Massive and irreversible casualties. I just feel the U.S is quite please with the sanctions and dwindling oil prices having its toll
