THE five South-South governors elected on the platform of the PDP may have decided to take up Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on his claim that he would defeat all of them in their respective states in one on one popularity contests. Oshiomhole had made the boast after the governors at a meeting in Asaba resolved to ensure that their party emerged victorious in the forthcoming governorship election. Taking up Oshiomhole, the five governors at the end of the party’s zonal congress in Port-Harcourt weekend reiterated their determination when they met the four major aspirants on the platform of the party. The four PDP aspirants include Chief Solomon Edebiri, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen and Osaro Onaiwu. Vanguard learnt that the aspirants were advised to continue to mobilize for the party irrespective of who picks the ticket, while they were assured of funds for the election. Vanguard learnt that the PDP South-South governors equally discussed the declaration by Governor Adams Oshiomhole that he will defeat any of them in their respective states. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/pdp-govs-vow-show-oshiomhole/ |

THE National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, yesterday, asked bank workers to comply with the directive by organised labour to stay at home from tomorrow should government fail to reverse the hike in the pump price of petrol. NUBIFIE, in a statement by its President and General Secretary, Danjuma Musa and Mohammed Sheiki, respecti-vely, also called on manage-ment of banks to comply with the sit-at-home directive “in the interest of our organisation and the masses of Nigeria.” According to the statement, after an emergency meeting of the union, where the current hike in the pump price of petrol by the government was discussed, the union, having reviewed the implications of such action on the already impoverished Nigerians, had resolved to join hands with the organised labour and all civil society allies to resist the hike. It said: “We condemn the unilateral increase, as we have seen before that the solution to perennial scarcity of petroleum products can never be addressed by merely increasing pump price of petroleum products.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/financial-sector-workers-urged-obey-nlc-strike/ |

The passage of Information Communications Technology, ICT, tax being considered by the National Assembly will likely threaten Nigeria’s ability to achieve its goal of 30% broadband penetration by 2018 and also undermine the socio-economic progress spurred by increased connectivity, Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) has said. According to the group, about 50 million Nigerians may not be able to afford internet access if the bill is passed by the present administration. Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), Nigeria brings together prominent players from private and public sectors and civil society to provide a unified approach and coordinated focus in addressing the shared goal of open, affordable access to the Internet in the developing world. Analysis by the A4AI Nigeria Coalition showed that the proposed 9% tax to be levied on consumers of communications services would result in an additional 10% of the population , equivalent to nearly 20 million Nigerians being unable to afford a basic broadband plan. The analysis by A4A1 suggested that Commenting on the proposed law, Dr Ernest Ndukwe, National Coordinator for the A4AI-Nigeria Coalition, said:“Balanced fiscal policy must consider affordability of broadband and ICT, and should not put into place additional barriers that would make Internet access unaffordable for hundreds of millions of Nigerians. “Nigeria is far behind the more developed countries of the world when it comes to broadband use, and the introduction of the CST will only widen this gap. The National Assembly must reconsider the passage of the CST and its impact on the development of broadband in Nigeria. “After such a review, if the introduction of a CST is deemed an absolute necessity, it must consider a lower tax rate than 9%, one that would enable it to achieve fiscal revenue targets without undermining broadband affordability and access.” Speaking on the proposed bill Communication Service Tax (CST) Bill 2015, currently in front of the National Assembly, would require consumers of voice, data, SMS, MMS and pay TV services to pay a 9% tax on the fees paid for the use of these services. This tax would be collected on top of the 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) that consumers already pay when they purchase devices and communication services, the 12% custom import duties paid on ICT devices, and the 20% tax levied on SIM cards. Mobile operators and service providers will be responsible for collecting consumer payments and must fulfil additional reporting obligations that are likely to increase operational costs and therefore service fees for consumers. Increasing access to and use of the Internet and communication technologies is central to Nigeria’s development agenda. Though Nigeria can currently claim to have some of Africa’s most affordable Internet prices (500MB priced at 5.4% of average income in 2014), broadband penetration stands at just 12%. The reality is that 40% of Nigerians earn less than half of the average income; this means that a basic mobile broadband plan actually costs the majority of Nigerians anywhere between 7-18% of their monthly income. The addition of this tax is expected to increase the cost to connect across the board, with women and low-income populations likely to be the hardest hit. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/9-tax-ict-will-threaten-nigerias-30-broadband-penetration-2018-a4a1/ |

With the increase in fuel pump price and also the prevailing inflection. The government would have to increase salaries of civil servants this cannot be possible with our dwindling revenue, the government cannot finance the budget with its stance of not devaluing the naira. The only way for the government to scale through this hurdle is to devalue the naira so that when converting the Nigeria foreign revenue to naira it would be enough to finance the so called budget of "change" . But trust me nothing we really change |
