NFF Proposes Implementation of VAR in Domestic Football League Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation has vowed to introduce Video Assistant Referee to the Nigeria Football League. He made the promise during the maiden retreat of the management and staff of NPFL in Abuja. VAR is a system that helps referees to decide better about players’ fouls, if a goal was valid, red card decisions, in football matches. He said the NFF will start the process of introducing VAR into Nigerian football by sending some referees to countries that have already put VAR into practice to study its application and usage. “I can assure you that VAR will be effectively put into use in our domestic football before the end of my first tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2026. Groundbreaking Discovery: Newly Developed Drug Effectively Halts HIV Infection, Reveals Research Researchers have discovered that a drug which stops HIV from infecting the body is highly effective, a study has confirmed. The drug it was gathered proved to be a highly effective "real-world" preventative treatment. The research was conducted on 24,000 people taking it across England and the results have been described as "reassuring", BBC reports. Thousands of people are already taking PrEP through sexual health clinics. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which led the PrEP Impact Trial with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said it was the largest ever real-world study of its kind. It was carried out at 157 sexual health clinics across England between October 2017 and July 2020. The study found use of PrEP, also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis. reduced the chances of getting HIV by around 86% when used in everyday life - taking into account inconsistent or incorrect use. Clinical trials suggested the medication is 99% effective. Dr John Saunders, a consultant in sexual health and HIV who worked on the study, said: "This trial has further demonstrated the effectiveness of PrEP in preventing HIV transmission and has, for the first time, shown the protective effect reported by earlier trials, but at scale, and delivered through routine sexual health services in England." The Terrence Higgins Trust HIV charity welcomed the study's publication, but said there was "more to be done" to increase access to, and awareness of, the drug, particularly among some minority groups. Debbie Laycock, head of policy, said: "We think that there are certain communities and individuals at the moment who could benefit from PrEP but aren't accessing it." "Many women just don't know PrEP exists," she added. She said the charity was calling for PrEP to be made available in pharmacies and online to widen access to it. Dr Saunders said that although the clinical success of the drug had been proven, this study revealed other important information about how it is used. "Before, we didn't know how many people would want it, take it, or how long they would stay on it for," he said. "Now we know who is being prescribed it and we can work with clinics to try and get more people to take it." He said that "real-world effectiveness" was dependent on many factors, particularly whether the drug is taken correctly. Lagos State Government to Arrest and Prosecute Individuals Closing Roads for Parties and Social Events The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it would arrest and prosecute anyone who closes the road to hold events. Chairman of the Agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye described such act as selfish, stating that it causes discomfort to residents. The government gave the warning in a statement released on its Instagram page on Wednesday, November 29. The statement reads; The Lagos State Taskforce has condemned in its entirety the way and manner in which some residents in some parts of the State close inner roads/streets to hold social events thereby inconveniencing other road users and constituting nuisance to the society. Chairman of the Agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye described the act as selfish and inconsiderate of residents who deliberately take actions that cause discomfort to other law-abiding individuals in the State. Jejeloye disclosed that the Agency recently had to disrupt a birthday celebration on a street in Yaba when it was discovered that the celebrants and guests had occupied 95% of the road thereby slowing down vehicular movement and inconveniencing Lagosians going about their businesses''. He stated that places like Lagos Island, Oworonshoki and Agege are major areas where such illegal activities are predominant, warning that the Lagos State Task Force intends to initiate an action plan that would put such inconvenience in check. He was alleged to have been lynched at Ogwashi-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. According to Daily Trust report, the police officer who served at the Marine Police Station (Cable Point Asaba) was lynched to death in the presence of his wife and three children while on their way to Sunday church service. The elder brother to the deceased, Austin Onori, who confirmed the incident said that trouble started when a commercial motorcyclist hit his brother’s vehicle from behind in Okpanam while going to Sunday Church service with his family. He said as a result of the accident, his brother stopped and packed his vehicle at a distance to ascertain the level of damage and to ensure that the motorcyclist and passenger were not hurt. He said no sooner had his brother alighted from the vehicle than young men of about 20 armed with sticks and clubs started chasing him. He narrated that the sight of the armed young men prompted him to run back into his car, adding that as he drove off fearing for his life, the young men continued to pursue him. In a letter dated September 28, and signed by the Deputy Commander-General of Narcotics, Josephine Obi, which was obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, the NDLEA categorically informed the police that Mohbad was neither arrested nor detained in the custody of the agency.
