Faithfulness

Mon, 3 Feb 2025

‘Well done, good and faithful servant;’ Matthew 25:23

Jesus begins the parable of the talents with these words: ‘“For the kingdom of heaven is like …’ (Matthew 25:14 NKJV). And one of the strongest points He makes is the importance of being faithful. Whether God gives you five talents, two talents, or one talent, the thing that matters to Him is your faithfulness. ‘His lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord”’ (Matthew 25:21 NKJV).

You will notice that He did not say, ‘Well done, popular servant’, or ‘brilliant servant’, but ‘faithful servant’. Christ is talking about those who are often unnoticed but indispensable to His purposes. He is talking about those who blow no trumpets, wave no banners, and demand no applause. He is talking about those who show up day after day and use the talents God gives them, to do the job He has assigned to them. Unnoticed by people, but noticed and rewarded by God! ‘For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of love which you have shown towards His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister’ (Hebrews 6:10 NKJV). These words describe those who shun the limelight and are happy to serve in the shadows. They describe those who not only start the race but run the race day after day, who don’t stop until they reach the finish line. Others may not think that you make much of a difference, but God does. While others make much out of skill levels and success levels, God measures you by your faithfulness.

Don’t give place to pride

Sun, 2 Feb 2025

‘Our sufficiency is from God.’ 2 Corinthians 3:5

Before his 1971 fight with Joe Frazier, American boxer Muhammad Ali said: ‘There’s not a man alive who can whup me. [He jabbed at the air with his blinding left.] I’m too smart. [He tapped his head with his glove.] I’m too pretty. [He showed the cameras his profile, like a bust on a pedestal.] I am the greatest! I am the king! I should be a postage stamp—that’s the only way I’ll ever get licked!’

Guess what happened in that fight? To the amazement of all, especially himself, Ali lost to Frazier. When confidence in your own ability and resources becomes pride, and then becomes arrogance, you’re heading for trouble. The Bible says, ‘Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall’ (Proverbs 16:18 NKJV). So, how do you find balance? By remembering that every gift, ability, talent, and resource that you have comes from God. Confidence is essential to success. There is nothing wrong with recognising the gifts God has given you. But the difference between self-confidence and Christ confidence is found in who gets the credit. A good way to keep this thought in the forefront of your life is to practise the art of thanksgiving each day. It’s hard to be too self-confident when you acknowledge that you are nothing without God’s grace, which is His unmerited, unearned, undeserved favour. The Bible says: ‘...Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time’ (1 Peter 5:5-6 NKJV).

Are you searching for meaning?

Sat, 1 Feb 2025

‘I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.’ Ecclesiastes 1:14

Are you thinking that if you had more money or greater success, you would be happy? Tennis star Boris Becker said: ‘I had won Wimbledon twice before, once as the youngest player. I was rich. I had all the material possessions I needed … It’s the old song of movie stars and pop stars who commit suicide. They have everything, and yet they are so unhappy. I had no inner peace.’

Solomon made the same discovery. ‘I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind’ (Ecclesiastes 1:14 NIV). Solomon tried religion, education, money, public works projects, fame, creative writing, and sensual pleasure: ‘I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labour, … Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, …’ (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 NIV). Finally, in the last chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon finds what he is looking for: ‘… Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind’ (Ecclesiastes 12:13 NIV). Solomon discovered that life is not built on things but on relationships. And the first and foremost relationship you must have is a relationship with God. You say, ‘How do I find God?’ Through Christ! Jesus said, ‘“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”’ (John 14:6 NKJV). Today, you can have a life-changing relationship with God by putting your trust in Jesus Christ.

Happy New Month. May this month of February be a blessed month for us in Jesus name 🙏.

Friendship

Fri, 31 Jan 2025

‘A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.’ Proverbs 17:17

Jonathan was the rightful heir to the throne of his father, Saul, but David had been called by God to succeed Saul as Israel’s next king. From day one, they were on a collision course. They had everything to lose by becoming friends, because ultimately only one of them could reign. So how did they handle it? Were they competitive, or suspicious, or jealous of one another? No, because neither was interested in promoting himself. The Bible says, ‘And Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself. Jonathan sealed the pact by taking off his robe and giving it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow, and belt’ (1 Samuel 18:3-4 NLT). These were his most treasured personal possessions. He was willing to risk his life for David despite his father Saul’s warnings that Jonathan’s throne would never be established as long as David was alive (see 1 Samuel 20:31). Likewise, David jeopardised his life fighting the Philistines to help Saul and Jonathan establish their kingdom.

The point of the story is this: a true friend is ‘there for you’, even when they would rather be somewhere else. As one celebrity said, ‘Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.’ Solomon said, ‘A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.’ (Proverbs 17:17 NLT) When was the last time you thanked God for the true friends in your life? What is it that makes them so special? Don’t assume they know how much you appreciate them. Tell them! And one more thought: if you want to have true friends—become one!

Keep praying for your children

Thu, 30 Jan 2025

‘Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.’ Proverbs 22:6

The Prodigal Son eventually came back home and was restored to his place in the family. When he lost everything and ended up feeding pigs, the Bible says, ‘He came to himself’ (see Luke 15:17). It’s hard to watch someone you love suffer but sometimes they need to hit the bottom in order to turn around. The Prodigal’s breaking point became his turning point. ‘I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you”’ (Luke 15:18 NKJV). Notice his father was a good parent with a rebellious child. If that describes you, here are three pieces of sound advice:

1) Don’t blame yourself and beat yourself up.

2) Don’t judge your children’s weaknesses from your position of strength. The reason they cannot see is because they are spiritually blind. But God can open their eyes. Jesus said, ‘"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day”’. (John 6:44 NKJV). You do the praying, and let God do the drawing.

3) Keep your heart and your door open. When the Prodigal Son finally came to his senses, he knew where to go; back home to the father who loved him. You cannot save your children from the consequences of their actions, and you may not be able to lessen the pain they’re going through. But if you pray, keep your heart and your door open, God can bring them back. ‘Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.’ (Proverbs 22:6 NLT) That’s a promise you can stand on today.

Getting beyond it

Wed, 29 Jan 2025

‘Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. … the second he called Ephraim.’ Genesis 41:51-52

When you experience tragedy or loss, unless you get help, you can shut down emotionally and remain stuck. And when you focus on the pain of the past, you risk forfeiting the blessing God has for you in the future. If anyone had reason to give in to despair and quit, it was Joseph. Those who should have loved him resented and betrayed him. He was slandered, lied about, and falsely imprisoned. How did he survive it? Four times in Genesis 39, the Bible says, ‘The Lord was with Joseph.’

Having a sense of God’s presence will sustain you through things that would otherwise destroy you. Joseph knew it was in forgiving and forgetting rather than holding on to resentment that he was setting himself free and positioning himself to fulfil his divine destiny. How do we know this? Because of what he named his two sons. ‘Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.” And the name of the second he called Ephraim: “For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.”’ (Genesis 41:51-52 NKJV)

Who enabled Joseph to forget the pain inflicted on him by his family? God! What enabled him to overcome the injustices inflicted upon him by others? A daily sense of God’s presence. And today, God’s presence will do that for you too. His promise to you is, ‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you … When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned … For I am the Lord your God’ (Isaiah 43:2-3 NKJV).

Only Jesus can satisfy your soul

Tue, 28 Jan 2025

‘Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.’ John 4:14

The woman Jesus met at the well had been married five times. She had tried multiple relationships in an attempt to fill the void within her. But it didn’t work for her, and it won’t work for you. Neither will climbing the corporate ladder, or acquiring more and more stuff, or achieving fame. Note what Jesus told this woman: ‘… “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again’ (John 4:13 NKJV). When you’re in the desert without water, there comes a point at which you start seeing mirages and believing things that are not real. And when your soul continues to be parched and dry, you start reaching for things that are not real and cannot satisfy it. Jesus didn’t bring up this woman’s past to embarrass her. He referenced it for one reason only: to let her know that He could heal the wounds of her past and give her hope for a better future. And He did. Not only did He transform her, but she also became the first person to introduce the Gospel to Samaria.

Perhaps you think you’re beyond hope and redemption. David wasn’t, and he committed adultery and covered it up with murder. Peter wasn’t, and he denied Jesus. Thomas wasn’t, even though he is still remembered as a doubter. Paul wasn’t, and he killed Christians before he became one. Your unfulfilled desires and your unquenched thirst are a plus, not a minus, if you let them drive you to the feet of Jesus. Here is His promise: ‘"but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." (John 4:14 NKJV).

Understanding righteousness

Mon, 27 Jan 2025

‘But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed…’ Romans 3:21

You will go to heaven because you trusted in Christ’s righteousness, not your own. You say, ‘But isn’t doing the right things important?’ Absolutely. Your reward in heaven will be predicated upon what you do for God here on earth. But your salvation depends on trusting in Christ’s performance, not your own. Satan knows this, and he will try to drive you back to performance-based Christian living. And when you fail, as you assuredly will, he will condemn you and tell you that you don’t measure up and, therefore, you are unworthy of God’s love and acceptance. Notice what condemnation does:

1) It robs you of confidence before God. You are unable to claim His promises because you feel unworthy. Thirty-one times in Scripture, it says that we are ‘in Christ’. That’s one for every day of the month. So, each day, remind yourself that you are ‘in Christ’, and because He is worthy, you are accepted.

2) It makes you irritable and unpleasant to be around. Addiction counsellors describe this as being ‘squirrelly’ or uneasy in your own skin. As a result, you begin to put out what you feel on the inside. What’s the answer? Paul gives it to us: ‘Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight … But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed … even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;’ (Romans 3:20-22 NKJV). Bottom line: righteousness is credited to your account through faith, not works. Today you are loved and accepted ‘in Christ’.

When God shows up

Sun, 26 Jan 2025

‘Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace…’ Daniel 3:17

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego refused to bow before Nebuchadnezzar’s ninety-foot golden god, he threatened them with a fiery furnace. Here is what they told him: ‘… our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, …’ (Daniel 3:17-18 NKJV). When does God show up? When you say, ‘God is able to deliver me, but if not, I’m going to serve Him anyway.’ It’s wonderful when God provides what we need. Yet, the faith that truly pleases God says, ‘But if not, I’m going to trust God anyway.’

Peter writes: ‘So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honour on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world’ (1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT).

And one more thought: the Bible does not say that the three Hebrew children saw the fourth man who was with them in the fire; it says that Nebuchadnezzar did, and he described Him as ‘the Son of God’ (see Daniel 3:25). So even when you don’t know it, your faith, your life, and testimony are impacting those around you and bringing glory to God.

Glean, store up, and share

‘Gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain.’ Genesis 41:35

Notice what Joseph told Pharaoh: ‘… to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain … Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine’ (Genesis 41:34-36 NKJV). There are two important lessons for us in this story.

1) Don’t let your bad times eat up your good ones. And what is the best way to do that? By standing on the Word of God during times of discouragement and difficulty. ‘Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 1:6 NKJV).

2) Don’t just enjoy your good times; glean from them the wisdom, strength, strategies, relationships, and resources that will sustain you in the bad times. Paul writes, ‘We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, …’ (Romans 5:3-4 NLT).

But when God blesses you, don’t just store it up—share it with others. Practise the law of reciprocity that Jesus taught: ‘Give, and it will be given to you … For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you’ (Luke 6:38 NKJV). What you cling to for selfish purposes, you will eventually lose. But when you give to bless others, God has promised to reward you both now and in eternity.

Don’t give up!

Fri, 24 Jan 2025

‘To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.’ Ecclesiastes 3:1

Solomon says there is ‘A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace’ (Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 NKJV).

That’s a total of twenty-eight different ‘times’. But notice what Solomon does not give us—a time to give up! As long as you stay on the battlefield, God can turn your situation around and give you victory. If you’re worried today about your marriage, your children, your health, your finances, your job, and your future, here is a promise you can stand on: ‘“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against You in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord’ (Isaiah 54:17 NKJV). God didn’t say that the weapon wouldn’t be formed against you, but He said it wouldn’t prosper. So don’t give up!

God cares about the details of your life

Thu, 23 Jan 2025

‘The very hairs of your head are all numbered.’ Luke 12:7

If you want to know how incomprehensively big God is, read this: ‘Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has stretched out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand together’ (Isaiah 48:13 NKJV). Could such a God care about your daily troubles and woes? Yes. ‘Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows’ (Luke 12:6-7 NKJV).

God values sparrows—more than you know. He feeds them and supplies them with trees and twigs for nests and other sparrows to mate with. He cares so much about them that He keeps a running inventory. How about you? ‘The very hairs of your head are all numbered.’ When you care about someone, you observe details. When a baby is born, what do parents do when they see the tiny fingers and toes for the first time? They count them. For years later, every time that child comes home, if they are missing one of those ten fingers or toes, the parents notice. Even inadequate parents do this.

Jesus was saying, ‘God doesn’t only number your fingers and toes. He loves you so much He numbers the hairs on your head. He notices their quantity. He notices their colour.’ Proverbs 16:31 tells us, ‘Grey hair is a crown of splendour; it is attained in the way of righteousness’ (NIV). The cross proves how much God loves you and how much you mean to Him, including the details of your life.
Christianity Etc › What It Takes To Do God's Will by Btruth(op): 6:31am On Jan 22, 2025
What it takes to do God’s will

Wed, 22 Jan 2025

‘Lord, what do You want me to do?’ Acts 9:6

Paul’s life changed forever when, trembling and astonished, he asked the question, ‘… Lord, what do You want me to do?’ Note how God answered his question: ‘… Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do’ (Acts 9:6 NKJV). Discovering God’s will takes place in steps.

Step one is awareness. You cannot change direction if you’re unaware you’re heading in the wrong direction, so spend some time thinking about where you’re presently heading. If it’s not where you need to go, then write down the steps you must take to go where you want to go, to accomplish what you want to accomplish. Make them as concrete as you possibly can. Will they absolutely be the right steps? Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. But you won’t know for sure until you start moving forwards.

Step two is action. You can’t win if you don’t begin! Take initiative. Do something specific each day that will move you one step closer to your goal. Then, continue to do it every day.

Step three is accountability. Few things will inspire you to see your goals through like accountability. One way you can do that is to share your goals. When you tell people what you plan to do, you feel pressure to keep working at it. Give those people permission to ask you about your progress. It’s like giving yourself a deadline so that you keep moving towards it. Writing things down gives you another form of accountability. Do you want to do God’s will? Then start with these steps.
