God’s goodness leads to godliness

‘The goodness of God leads you to repentance.’ Romans 2:4

Do you remember the woman who took an alabaster box of fragrant oil and anointed Jesus with it? The Bible says: ‘Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner”’ (Luke 7:39 NKJV). Man-made religion condemned this woman because of her past, but Jesus cleansed her and made her whole. ‘Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little’ (Luke 7:47 NKJV). Jesus knew what this woman had done, but He also knew what she could become when His grace touched her life.

The more you realise that you have been forgiven much, actually, of all your sins, the more you will love the Lord. God’s forgiveness does not lead to a sinful lifestyle; it leads to a life of glorifying the Lord Jesus. ‘… the goodness of God leads you to repentance ...’ (Romans 2:4 NKJV) The word ‘repentance’ means to turn around and do the opposite. Condemnation does not produce righteous living, but the knowledge of God’s grace and goodness towards us does. Simon the Pharisee thought that his acceptance by God was based on his performance; hence he became self-righteous. But Jesus set him straight: ‘… But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.’ When you realise how much and how often God has forgiven you, you fall in love with Him and desire to please Him in all you do.

You can overcome the temptation (3)

Sun, 4 Aug 2024

‘He is able to aid those who are tempted.’ Hebrews 2:18

If you are serious about overcoming temptation, here are five things you must do:

1) Think about the choices you are making, and the consequences, before you make them. Wisdom always looks ahead.

2) Believe that you can resist temptation—because you can. ‘You are of God … and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world’ (1John 4:4 NKJV).

3) Recall how you felt when you gave in to temptation before. Guilt, condemnation, shame. These are some of Satan’s favourite weapons. When you give in to them, it’s hard to get back on your feet again.

4) Don’t put yourself in situations where you can easily fall. If you struggle with managing your money, don’t go to the shopping centre or shop online when you can’t afford to buy anything. If you struggle with pornography, remove the source of it from your life.

5) Celebrate each victory, but be sure to give God the credit for it. You will never graduate from being tempted. It’s easy to think you’re beyond stumbling, and once that happens, you make yourself an easy target for the Enemy.

God wants you to trust Him for victory in every area of your life. Sheep are defenceless animals; they have no fighting skills. When they stray from the fold, they are quickly devoured by the wolf. So, they have learned that their safety and protection lie in staying close to the shepherd. And the same goes for you. Here is a promise you can stand on today: ‘… the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations ...’ (2 Peter 2:9 NKJV).

‘God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.’ 1 Corinthians 10:13

The Bible says: ‘Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.’ (1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NKJV). The words ‘way of escape’ does not promise you exemption from temptation. Satan, who is called ‘the tempter’, never lets up or takes a day off. But God’s goal is to make you strong where you have been weak. His promise to you is that He ‘… will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able …’

Keep going, even when you think you can’t! God has promised you a way of escape, so keep going and wait for it. Victory is just around the corner, but you’ll never taste the sweetness of it if you give in. As you become stronger in the Lord, the temptations you are battling will become progressively weaker until they lose their appeal, and you begin to walk in victory with ease.

‘No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man.’ 1 Corinthians 10:13

In Scripture, Satan is called ‘the tempter’ and ‘the accuser’. First, he will tempt you, and if you fail, he will accuse you. He wants you to feel unworthy and disqualified in God’s eyes. But you’re not! ‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need’ (Hebrews 4:15-16 NIV). When you fail, you can go to God with confidence, knowing He will not only forgive you but provide the enabling grace to help you overcome temptation next time.

We all face temptation; it’s an unavoidable part of life. Even believers who have walked with the Lord for many years deal with it. Their areas of temptation may be different from yours, but Satan doesn’t give any of us a free pass. However, you can overcome temptation. One of the first steps to conquering it is to start saying the right thing. The Bible says, ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit’ (Proverbs18:21 NKJV). Your words give life to what you say. So, start speaking God’s Word. Jesus said, ‘Behold, I give you the authority … over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you’ (Luke10:19 NKJV). Claim that promise today; for what God promises, He will give you the strength to perform.

Rely on God and stay within the boundary lines

Thu, 1 Aug 2024

‘Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.’ Galatians 5:16

There is just enough ego and independence in us to want to do things our way. And they keep getting us into trouble. Paul writes: ‘So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want’ (Galatians 5:16-17 NIV). Note the words ‘the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit’. What’s the key to victory? First, lean more on God and less on yourself. Second, establish boundaries in your life. That’s why daily Bible reading is so important. It keeps you in God’s safety zone by telling you what you can do and what you had better not do to be safe.

Roads have lines: one on each side and one in the centre. These lines provide margins for our safety while we’re driving. If we go over the line on one side, we risk going into the ditch. If we cross over the line in the middle, we risk getting hit by oncoming traffic. We appreciate those lines because they keep us safe. And it’s like that in our personal lives too. When we have clearly marked boundary lines, we feel much better and experience God’s peace. When God says don’t, He is not being difficult to get along with, He is being protective. You have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus, you are precious in His eyes, and He wants only the best for you.

Happy New Month. May August be a blessed month to us in Jesus name 🙏

Focus on your spouse’s best qualities

Wed, 31 Jul 2024

‘He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour from the LORD.’ Proverbs 18:22

The best marriages are built by couples who try to remember the qualities that initially attracted them to one another. If you want to build a happy marriage or improve a less-than-happy one, do these:

1) List your spouse’s best qualities. Write down the things you love most about him or her, and endeavour to keep those things in mind at all times. When stresses and strains surface in your relationship, as they inevitably will, go over the list in your mind, and if necessary, refer to the written copy as a reminder.

2) Focus on them. Think how your spouse’s great qualities enrich your life, and how much you would miss them if he or she was not around. When you change your focus, you change your feelings. And when you change your feelings, you change your perspective, your approach, and your reactions.

3) Verbalise them. ‘Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her’ (Proverbs 31:28 NKJV). Your children learn how to build a great marriage or a miserable one by watching you. That thought alone should put the brakes on criticism and bring out the compliments!

4) Nurture them. ‘Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows’ (Galatians 6:7 NIV). People wither under complaints, whereas they thrive and grow through praise and encouragement.

Seize any moment worth celebrating and magnify it! Paul bottom-lines it: ‘Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.’ (1 Corinthians 13:6-7 NIV).

How to ease financial stress

‘So, if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?’ Luke 16:11

Did you know that God’s willingness to bless you with more money depends on how well you handle what He has already given you? When it comes to money, here are some Bible principles you must live by:

1) Pay God His share first so you won’t feel ashamed of not doing so (see Malachi 3:10).

2) Pray before you buy. Ask yourself, ‘Do I need this or just want it?’

(3) Keep mindful of the amount of expenditures versus your income.

4) Be in agreement with your husband or wife regarding the household budget and your short- and long-term goals. And don’t hide or misconstrue information about your finances.

5) Commit to excellence at work – without overdoing your hours.

6) Pay off all your debts. Your home loan will take longer but aim to make extra repayments to pay it off sooner.

7) Save at least 10 per cent of your gross pay if you are out of debt.

cool Don’t co-sign a loan for anyone, and don’t lend anyone money you can’t afford to lose.

9) Pay cash for all your ‘desires’ instead of putting them on a credit card.

10) Assign funds in your budget for fun and holidays.

11) Live beneath your means. When you get a pay raise, don’t adapt your lifestyle to consume all of it.

12) Aim to set up an emergency cash supply of at least two months’ living expenses (six months would be better).

13) Be satisfied with what you have. ‘Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless’ (Ecclesiastes 5:10 NIV).

Develop your awareness of God’s presence

Mon, 29 Jul 2024

‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’ Exodus 33:14

When you sense God’s presence and know He is with you, you can handle whatever life brings. Try to imagine the assignment Moses had of liberating two million people from the grip of slavery: leading them through a wilderness where they were exposed to enemies and elements such as extreme heat and cold; feeding them, clothing them, settling their disputes, and keeping them moving towards their destiny. Here is what Moses prayed: ‘… If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here’ (Exodus 33:15 NKJV). Moses preferred to go nowhere with God than anywhere without Him.

When his affair with Bathsheba was exposed, David didn’t pray, ‘Don’t take my crown from me, or my kingdom, or my army.’ No, he knew what mattered most: ‘Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me’ (Psalm 51:11 NKJV). In order to grow spiritually, you must develop an increasing awareness of God’s presence in your life. How do you do that? Instead of being a rock, become a sponge. When you place a rock in the ocean, its surface gets wet, but its core remains hard and dry. But when you place a sponge in the ocean, the water alters the very essence of its being.

Slow down and sense God’s presence. Begin by reading this Scripture, writing it down, repeating it over and over, and opening every pore of your soul to God’s presence: ‘The LORD your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing’ (Zephaniah 3:17 CSB).

Unlearn inaccurate beliefs

Sun, 28 Jul 2024

‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. …’ Hosea 4:6

Failing to unlearn irrational fears and misconceptions keeps us from becoming who God wants us to be. The disabled man in John 5 is a great example of this. He had been crippled for thirty-eight years when Jesus asked if he would like to get well. However, the man believed there was only one way to be healed: ‘“Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me”’ (John 5:7 NKJV).

This man assumed something that may have cost him thirty-eight years! He thought that, in order to be healed, he had to be the first person into the pool of Bethesda when an angel stirred the water. In a sense, he was imprisoned by that thought. But Jesus uninstalled that inaccurate belief with one sentence: ‘… Take up your bed and walk’ (John 5:11 NKJV). Jesus set this man free physically, and He set him free cognitively. Faith is unlearning the senseless worries and misguided beliefs that keep us captive. And that’s what we do while we study Scripture. We literally upgrade our minds by downloading the mind of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:16).

Unlearning something is twice as hard as learning it. Why? Because every mile you go in the wrong direction is really a two-mile error as you have to double back to get to where you need to be. Getting old thoughts out of your mind is harder than getting new thoughts into it. But it’s worth it. So, take time each day to renew your mind with God’s Word.

The essence of leadership

Sat, 27 Jul 2024

‘But all the men of valour among you shall pass over armed before your brethren and shall help them,’ Joshua 1:14

To be worthy of a following, you need more than talent and a title. The essence of leadership lies in doing two things.

1) Going first! ‘Pass over armed before your brethren.’ That means if God has called you to lead, you must step out in faith and go first. That requires believing in yourself and your mission. Accomplishment requires more than just working hard; it requires believing the right thing. God told Joshua, ‘… Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go’ (Joshua 1:9 NIV). You don’t need all the answers upfront. Your confidence comes from knowing that God is with you—and ahead of you.

2) Taking others with you. ‘… you shall pass over armed before your brethren and shall help them,’ (Joshua 1:14 RSV). And in case you’re wondering, ‘How long do I have to keep investing in this person?’ The answer is, ‘… until they too have taken possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them. …’ (Joshua 1:15 NIV).

Many people will serve when they’re compelled to, and some will serve in a crisis. But when you have a servant’s heart, you initiate service to others. You see the need, seize the opportunity, and serve knowing God will reward you. Therefore, you serve with gladness (see Psalm 100:2). So here is the deal: you only qualify to enjoy the privileges of leadership when you’re willing to go first and then take others with you.

But that’s not the end of the story. God said, ‘After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you …’ (Joshua 1:15 NIV).

Protect your marriage

Fri, 26 Jul 2024

‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; ...’ John 10:1020

Why do 50 per cent of marriages, including Christian marriages, end in divorce? Jesus answers that question: ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly’ (John 10:10 NASB20). God performed the first wedding ceremony between Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. And the honeymoon barely began before Satan entered the picture and attacked them, causing feelings of shame and separation from God. Later in Scripture, when Satan couldn’t defeat the patriarch Job through boils, bankruptcy, and bereavement, he attacked him through his wife. Your marriage is one of Satan’s prime targets, and you forget that at your peril. So how can you protect it?

1) Know your mate’s expectations: are they realistic? Were they unexpressed or unknown until conflict arose in the relationship? Disappointment often manifests itself as anger.

2) Familiarise yourself with your spouse’s family history: in many ways, he or she is a product of the environment they grew up in. The truth is, we build with the tools and fight with the weapons our parents gave us. And during quarrels and heated conversations, memories of parental anger, childhood abuse, and family arguments can influence how we react later when we get married.

3) Start praying for your mate: better still – start praying with them! Jesus said: ‘“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them”’ (Matthew 18:19-20 NKJV). So protect your marriage—it’s one of Satan’s biggest targets.

Don’t be afraid of failing (3)

‘Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.’ Matthew 14:29

The Bible says, ‘"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"’ (Matthew 14:28-31 NIV). When you know that you have prayed, prepared, and planned, you must step out and do it. It’s normal to experience fear when you attempt something you have never done before.

Perhaps you have read the story of Peter’s attempt to walk on the water and judged him a failure. That’s not so.

First, Peter gets an A for being willing to leave his safety zone and do what he had never done before.

Second, he experienced the exhilaration of actually walking on water if for only a fleeting moment; no other disciple could boast of that.

Third, he learned a valuable lesson: focusing on Jesus rather than your circumstances is essential when attempting the impossible.

Fourth, he recognised that his survival depended solely on Jesus. ‘But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, why did you doubt?”’ (Matthew 14:30-31 NIV). Jesus didn’t condemn Peter for failing, He just told him he needed to develop greater faith.

God won’t let you drown in your mistakes. As long as you keep trusting Him, He will keep working with you until you succeed. He is your heavenly Father, and your success is His success!

‘I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!’ 1 Corinthians 9:16

Let’s take another look at how to conquer the fear of failure.

1) Pursue your God-given purpose in life. To truly succeed at something, you must have a passion for it. And God will not only reveal to you His purpose, He will give you a passion to pursue it. Paul had the gift, education, and connections to pursue a number of different careers. But he wrote, ‘For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!’ (1 Corinthians 9:16 NIV) What do you feel passionately about? Study it; it’s a clue to your destiny.

2) Ask yourself these three questions:

a) ‘What’s the worst that can happen if I don’t succeed?’ You will still have God, your talents, your family, and other opportunities.

b) ‘Has this ever been done before?’ Even if not, so what?

c) ‘Is this fear a signal that I don’t have the proper people, processes, or plans in place to succeed at this time?’

Then ask the really big question: ‘What are the benefits I will enjoy if I succeed?’ Have a can-do attitude. Look your fear in the face and boldly assert: ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me’ (Philippians 4:13 KJV). Don’t let the familiarity of this Scripture cause you to recite it by rote. Say it out loud. Really absorb the words; get them into your spirit. Know that Christ strengthens you to succeed for the glory of God. Know that when He guides you, He provides you with all that you need to succeed in whatever He has called you to do.

‘As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.’ 2 Chronicles 26:5

Let’s look at some Bible strategies for overcoming the fear of failure.

1) Make sure that your vision and your values line up. The rise and fall of King Uzziah are told in these words: ‘Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. … He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, … He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success. … But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God …’ (2 Chronicles 26:3-5, 16 NIV).

The lesson here is clear: success can be intoxicating. And intoxicated people don’t think too clearly and end up getting into all kinds of trouble. So be sure that your vision is in line with your core values. Stay in balance. Define success based on God’s Word rather than the ego-driven systems of the world. For example, receiving public recognition and praise for your accomplishments while your family life is a mess is not success. And sacrificing your integrity for profit and promotion is the worst deal you will ever make.

2) Learn from your failures and mistakes. Failure is not fatal, neither does it define who you are. It is the result of your actions but not the measure of your worthiness. American inventor Thomas Edison once said, ‘I have not failed. I’ve just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.’ Humbly view your mistakes as ‘tuition paid’ on your education, then grow wiser, and keep moving forward.

You can conquer your fear

‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, ...’ 1 John 4:18

According to psychiatric reference, approximately two thousand classified fears exist. What’s interesting is that psychiatrists say we are born with only two innate ones: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. That means we learn every other fear. And more importantly, that means we can unlearn every other fear. The majority of us are shaped, for better or worse, by a handful of experiences. These defining experiences can plant a seed of confidence or a seed of uncertainty, a seed of hope or a seed of vulnerability, a seed of faith or a seed of fear. John expresses the end goal of our relationship with God: ‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.’ (1 John 4:18 NIV).

The words ‘perfect love’ does not describe our love for God, but rather God’s unconditional, unearned, unfailing love for us. A pastor writes: ‘The goal of love is fearlessness! As we grow in a love relationship with God, we unlearn the fears that paralyse us and neutralise us spiritually. That is the essence of faith. Faith is the process of unlearning your irrational fears. The only God-ordained fear is the fear of God. And if we fear [love, honour, reverence, and respect] God, we don’t have to fear anyone or anything else.

Unlearning our fears is really a process of learning to trust God more and more.’ One of the greatest promises God has given to us in Scripture is this: ‘… For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man to do me?”’ (Hebrews 13:5-6 NKJV).
