Nairaland / General / The Old, But New National Anthem by Btruth: 6:51am On May 30
*The Old, but New National Anthem.*

Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honour'd,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.

‘Go in the strength you have ...’ Judges 6:14

The Bible says: ‘When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us?” … The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” The LORD answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive”’ (Judges 6:12-16 NIV).

Do you feel fearful and inadequate? Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress (see Judges 6:11), afraid of the Midianites. Yet God called him a ‘mighty warrior’. God sees things in you that others don’t, that even you yourself don’t! Read these words carefully: ‘I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure”’ (Isaiah 46:9-10 NKJV).

God sees things in their completed state – including your ultimate victory. And today He is saying to you, ‘Go in the strength you have … Am I not sending you?’ (Judges 6:14) When God sends you, your success is guaranteed in spite of all the obstacles, the enemies, and all the limitations you are so aware of. If you’re unwilling to move until things ‘look better’, you won’t win. Start where you are and use what you have, then God will give you more.

Are you worried about retirement?

Wed, 29 May 2024

‘Don’t worry … he will give you everything you need.’ Matthew 6:31, 33

A survey revealed that many people over fifty do not have enough money in their superannuation account to begin preparing them for their retirement. Since we are all living longer, that means:

a) a lot of people are going to be dependent on the government for their survival, and

b) a lot of people who had planned on retiring are going to have to keep working. So, what should you do?

1) Cut back where you can and start saving more. ‘There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it’ (Proverbs 21:20 NKJV).

2) Find a financial planner to help you assess where you stand, and the level of income and expenses you’re likely to have during retirement. That way, you can customise a plan suited to your financial goals. ‘In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but in the revenue of the wicked is trouble’ (Proverbs 15:6 NKJV).

3) Honour God with your finances. ‘Honour the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, …’ (Proverbs 3:9-10 NKJV). Giving brings God’s blessing!

4) Trust God to take care of you. ‘So don’t worry about these things, saying, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, …’ (Matthew 6:31-34 NLT).

The right balance

‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; …' John 1:14

Some of us major in grace but neglect confronting people with the truth lest we offend them. Others of us major in truth but fail to show God’s grace to people. But Jesus was ‘full of grace and truth’, (see John 1:14) and that’s the balance you must strive for!

A man with little interest in spiritual matters related casually to the Christian who lived next door. They talked over the back fence, borrowed each other’s tools, and stuff like that. Then sadly the nonbeliever’s wife was stricken with cancer and died. Here is part of a letter he wrote afterwards: ‘I was in total despair. I went through the funeral preparations and the service like I was in a trance. After the service, I went to the path along the river and walked all night. But I didn’t walk alone. My neighbour – afraid for me, I guess – stayed with me all night. He didn’t speak; he didn’t even walk beside me. He just followed me. When the sun finally came up over the river, he came over and said, “Let’s go get some breakfast.” I go to church now. My neighbour’s church. A religion that can produce the kind of caring my neighbour showed me is something I want to find out more about. I want to love and be loved like that for the rest of my life.’

Any farmer will tell you that before you sow your seed, you must prepare the ground. ‘Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;’ (Romans 12:9 RSV). When you treat people with grace, they will open their hearts and minds to the truth you want to share with them.

Are you a true friend?

Mon, 27 May 2024

‘A friend loves at all times, ...’ Proverbs 17:17

Two men were travelling down the road together when a bear appeared out of nowhere. Before the bear could spot them, one guy ran for a tree at the side of the road, climbed into its branches, and hid. The other man, who wasn’t as nimble as his tree-climbing companion, threw himself on the ground and pretended to be dead. The bear came up, sniffed all around him, and appeared to whisper something in his ear. The man had always heard that bears won’t touch a dead body, so he lay perfectly still and held his breath. Sure enough, the bear took him for a corpse and left. When the coast was clear, the man in the tree came down. Curious, he asked his companion what the bear had whispered when it put its mouth directly to his ear. His friend replied, ‘He told me never to travel with a friend who deserts you at the first sign of danger!’

It’s easy to be friends with someone who is successful, has it all together, and is riding the crest of the wave. But what about when that person falls, or fails, or loses their connection to Christ, or deliberately disconnects and causes all kinds of ugly consequences? The Bible says, ‘A friend loves at all times.’ (Proverbs 17:17 NKJV) When you’re ‘up’, they’re not envious, and when you’re ‘down’, they’re not condescending. They’re compassionate and considerate whether or not you are. American writer Elbert Hubbard said, ‘Your friend is the man [or woman] who knows all about you and still loves you.’ If you have a friend like that, treasure them and tell them often how much you appreciate them.

‘If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.’ Romans 12:18

The Bible says, ‘And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you’ (Ephesians 4:32 NKJV). You say, ‘But what they did to me was unfair, unkind, and unwarranted.’ Exactly – and God feels the same way about some of the things you have done! Any attempt to avenge a wrong is a violation of God’s Word. That includes bad-mouthing them, giving them the silent treatment, making sarcastic remarks, refusing to help them, and resorting to physical violence or verbal attacks.

If you were hurt by someone at work, it includes taking company resources without authorisation, applying workplace rules more stringently to the offending employee than others, and deliberately slowing your pace to frustrate them. If you were hurt by your spouse, it includes brooding, making them walk on eggshells, and withholding your love and affection. Paul writes: ‘Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. ... Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." (Romans 12:14, 17-19 RSV).

Repaying evil for evil won’t bring you satisfaction. Besides, have you considered that the person who hurt you may have genuinely changed? What if God continued to hold your transgressions over your head? Retaliation just destroys your peace of mind because you know it displeases God. Today pray: ‘Father, I release any desire to get even. I want to walk in your peace, extend your grace, and allow you to avenge all wrongs done against me. Amen.’ (So be it!)

‘Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’ Nehemiah 8:10

Anytime you substitute positive thinking for faith in God and obedience to His Word, you’re on dangerous ground! But don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. As a believer, you’re supposed to train your brain to trust God and think positive thoughts that are founded on His Word. A study conducted in the Netherlands found that people who are optimistic have healthier hearts than those who are grumpy. Self-described optimists died of cardiovascular disease at a lower rate than those of pessimists.

Dr Becca Levy of Yale University conducted a study that concluded that ‘a positive attitude towards ageing was greater than physiological measures such as low blood pressure and cholesterol,’ each of which is believed to add a maximum of four years to a person’s life. The same study discovered that optimistic people live longer than people who always worry, and that a positive attitude can add more years to life than exercising or refraining from smoking. Additionally upholding the mind-body connection, a 2005 Associated Press article reported, ‘New research suggests that once Alzheimer’s disease robs someone of the ability to expect that a proven painkiller will help them, it doesn’t work nearly as well.’ Isn’t that remarkable? When people are able to think painkillers work, the medicines seem to help.

Our minds are amazing! The Bible says, ‘The joy of the LORD is your strength.’ (see Nehemiah 8:10) And that’s not just spiritual strength, but physical, mental, and emotional strength. If you want to have a healthy life, you must have a healthy mind, and that starts with thinking positively instead of negatively. So, train your brain.

‘My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your Word.’ Psalm 119:28

When you’re depressed. When depression is physiologically based, God can heal you through a miracle, the right medical treatment, vitamins, herbs, and supplements. But sometimes it goes deeper, and just like your body can suffer from ‘dis-ease’, so can your soul. Thankfully, God is the ultimate soul doctor! The psalmist said, ‘In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul’ (Psalm 138:3 NKJV).

Instead of giving up and settling for the fact that depression runs in your family, stand on God’s Word. Jesus came to ‘… heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, … to comfort all who mourn, … to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; …’ (Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJV). The Bible says, ‘You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore’ (Psalm 16:11 NKJV). ‘And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness…sorrow and sighing shall flee away’ (Isaiah 35:10 NKJV). ‘These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full’ (John 15:11 NKJV). ‘Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full’ (John 16:24 NKJV).

Every morning when you get up, look in the mirror and declare: ‘This is the day the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it’ (Psalm 118:24 NKJV). God wants to free you from depression, and when you do your part, He will do His.

‘God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’ 1 Corinthians 1:9

When you feel inadequate for the job. Have you been given a job you don’t feel qualified to do? No problem – it’s an opportunity for God to show Himself strong on your behalf (see 2 Chronicles 16:9). Fix your mind on your all-powerful, always-present, loving heavenly Father. ‘Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken’ (Psalm 55:22 NIV). Instead of fearing the challenge, start feeding your faith. ‘So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God’ (Romans 10:17 NKJV). Spend more time in prayer and move closer to Jesus: ‘If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples’ (John 15:7-8 NIV).

Instead of giving in to fear, stand on God’s Word: ‘Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things – and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him’ (1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NIV). ‘Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen’ (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV).

You are right; on your own, you’re not up to the task. But with God on your side, you’re more than equal to the challenge!

‘Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.’ Proverbs 27:20

When you’re controlled by materialism. The flawed philosophy behind materialism is ‘more, more, more!’ And it’s the result of ‘eye trouble’. The Bible says, ‘The eyes of man are never satisfied.’ (see Proverbs 27:20) It’s okay to want a nice home, a reliable car, and financial security. God will provide those things when you’re a good steward of what He has already entrusted you with. But when you want more than you need or more than what’s required to fulfil His will, the Bible calls it vanity. The word could be defined as being empty, hollow, or without purpose. Solomon writes, ‘He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity’ (Ecclesiastes 5:10 NKJV).

So, before you ask God for prosperity, ask Him to reveal your life’s purpose because they’re directly linked. Jesus said, ‘… “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15 NKJV). God uses a different measuring stick, and His Word says, ‘And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work … Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God’ (2 Corinthians 9:8, 10-11 NIV).

Is God willing to bless you financially? Yes, but only when you are willing to be a conduit and a distributor of His blessings.

‘If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.’ James 1:5

When you need to pass a difficult test or exam. The fear of failing can cause your brain to freeze just when you need your thoughts to flow freely. When you know you have done your best to study the material and prepare yourself, trust God with the outcome and stand on His Word: ‘Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass’ (Psalm 37:3-5 NKJV). ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know’ (Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV). ‘He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him’ (Psalm 91:15 NKJV). ‘“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you’ (John 14:26 NKJV). ‘And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight’ (1 John 3:22 NKJV).

Don’t be afraid; God will go with you when it’s time to take that test or exam. Long before you prayed, He was already preparing your heart and mind: ‘It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear’ (Isaiah 65:24 NKJV). So square your shoulders and walk into that exam room knowing God is with you!

‘I have blotted out … your transgressions, and … your sins. …’ Isaiah 44:22

When you have a hard time forgiving yourself. There is only one unpardonable sin named in the Bible (see Luke 12:10). And as a believer, you probably haven’t committed it, so God will forgive you for everything else. However, when God says He forgives you and you refuse to forgive yourself, it’s like opting to stay in prison after the judge has expunged your record and set you free. And worse, you’re committing the sin of pride. How come? Because when God forgives you, and you refuse to forgive yourself, you’re putting your opinion above His.

If you’re having trouble forgiving yourself, stand on God’s Word: ‘I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins’ (Isaiah 43:25 NKJV). ‘I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, and like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you’ (Isaiah 44:22 NKJV). ‘Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon’ (Isaiah 55:7 NKJV). ‘“… never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,” says the Lord God’ (Ezekiel 16:63 NKJV). ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ (1 John 1:9 KJV). ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit’ (Romans 8:1 NKJV).

Are you ‘in Christ Jesus’? Then rejoice; you no longer need to struggle under the weight of condemnation. God has totally forgiven you, so forgive yourself and move on.

Your Boaz season

Sun, 19 May 2024

‘She came and has continued from morning until now.’ Ruth 2:7

After ten years of sorrow and hardship in which she lost her husband and her support system, God introduced Ruth to her new husband, Boaz. Where? In the field where she worked each day. Who was Boaz? The owner of the field. One of the things that attracted Boaz to Ruth was her work ethic. The servant in charge of his reapers told him, ‘… she came and has continued from morning until now, …’ (Ruth 2:7 NKJV) As a result, she ended up married to the boss.

That’s why the Bible has so much to say about the difference between laziness and hard work, sloppiness and excellence, lateness and punctuality, honesty and dishonesty, a positive attitude and a negative one. Someone who is capable of blessing you is always observing you. Read these three Scriptures:

1) ‘Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men’ (Proverbs 22:29 NKJV).

2) ‘The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich’ (Proverbs 13:4 NKJV).

3) ‘He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich’ (Proverbs 10:4 NKJV). Notice the phrases ‘a slack hand’ and ‘a lazy man’. By expecting much and giving back as little as possible in return, you don’t just short-change the company you work for, you short-change yourself. Why? Because God promises to honour you when you give your best. His Word says, ‘Exaltation does not come from the east, the west, or the desert, for God is the Judge: He brings down one and exalts another.’ (Psalm 75:6-7 CSB).

You can rise above worry (2)

Sat, 18 May 2024

‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding;’ Proverbs 3:5

When you honestly evaluate your worries, you will find you are doing these:

1) Forgetting that God is your friend. The psalmist said, ‘The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.’ (Psalm 25:14 RSV). Friendship with God is built by sharing your life’s experiences with Him – every activity, every conversation, every problem, and every thought. When you don’t, you end up unaware of His presence, oblivious to His voice, resistant to His correction, and out of sync with His timing. And when you live that way, there is one inevitable result – worry!

2) Taking on things you shouldn’t. Scottish-American preacher Peter Marshall prayed: ‘Father … check our impulse to spread ourselves so thin that we’re exposed to fear and doubt, to the weariness and impatience that makes our tempers wear thin; [that] robs us of peace of mind; that makes skies grey when they should be blue; that stifles a song along the corridor of our hearts.’ You lose your song when you add the unnecessary pressure of maintaining your exterior image, increasing your pace to keep up with the Joneses, and trying to fix everybody or live up to their expectations.

3) Failing to understand the difference between the secular and the sacred. Either Jesus is Lord over every area of your life, or He is not Lord over any of it. We tell ourselves certain parts of our lives lie in the realm of God’s concern, but not others. The Bible says, ‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight’ (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV). To live any other way is to live a worried life!

You can rise above worry (1)

Fri, 17 May 2024

‘But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.’ Matthew 6:33

British missionary Gladys Aylward said, ‘The eagle that soars in the upper air does not worry itself how it is to cross rivers.’ You can’t escape worry; it will come at you from different directions and in different forms. But like the eagle, you can rise above it. Jesus said: ‘“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.”’ (Matthew 6:25-34 RSV)

Are you hooked on pornography?

Thu, 16 May 2024

‘I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.’ Job 31:1

There are certain doors in life that once opened are hard to close – pornography is one of them. And like any addict, once you’re hooked, you need increasing doses to satisfy yourself until finally, you end up shocked and shamed by the depths to which you have sunk. And statistically speaking, the problem is exactly the same in the church as it is in society. Jesus taught us to pray, ‘Deliver us from evil,’ (see Matthew 6:9-15), and some of that evil is now brought into our homes through television and the internet.

Parents, protect your children from things that can cloud their minds and hurt their chances of building healthy relationships. And if you’re addicted to pornography, pray this prayer: ‘Lord, “… cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:2 KJV). Help me to stop setting myself up for shame and failure by the things I open myself up to (see Romans 13:14). I repent and ask for your deliverance now. Reveal to me the emotional needs I’m attempting to fulfil, and give me the courage, strength, and wisdom to deal with them in a manner that honours you. I want to follow Job’s example, because he made a covenant with his eyes not to look upon, wish for, or lust after sinful things. I can’t do it in my own strength. Fill me with your Spirit. Give me someone I can trust to be honest with me – someone who will share this burden with me in prayer and believe for my deliverance. Give me a longing for you that will surpass and destroy all lustful thoughts. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.’
