It is no longer news that my dear friend Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is playing host to my brother from the west, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his yearly Colloquium where the master politician gathers intellectuals and politicians to discuss contemporary political and social issues while proffering solutions where necessary.

Asiwaju means well when he hosts these events yearly. But he is a man with methods. He does not just come out dancing, except he has gathered the drummers and informed them the rhythm they must play.

This year’s Colloquium would not be different from the many others the South West’s leader has hosted. But it would have a significant touch on the master planner’s road to achieving his presidential ambition for 2023.

The most significant reason that this colloquium would be the most political, if I may use that word, is that it is being hosted in the seat of the North’s machinery for churning out votes—Kano State. And to embellish this fact, is the fact that the host, my friend, Dr Ganduje, has been given promises, and he has made him too.

Kano State gave President Buhari over 77% of the votes cast in the last election. A whopping 1.4 Million votes. This is the equivalent of the total of votes from three to four South-Eastern States. All handed to Mai Gaskiya. Asiwaju knows that to fulfil his 2023 ambition, he must earn the love of the North, and their votes, too.

His choice of Kano is not perchance. It is a calculated selection. But there are many other reasons that Kano has become the darling of the West’s master planner.

The Dollar Connection

Dr. Ganduje owes a lot to Asiwaju. His life in fact is owed to Asiwaju.

When the embarrassing video of Ganduje showing off his babariga stashed with dollars from an alleged bribe he was seen collecting, the man’s career was in the mud. He became a pariah at once. He was the symbol of stark naked corruption. Ganduje, notorious for his AIKI! AIKI! AIKI! did not make an appearance on this matter, and kept mum for weeks.

His re-election at the primaries was only a few months away. The party was worried about the perception crisis this ugly scenery was going to give to the party. There were one or two alternatives being propped up here and there, and Ganduje’s life and career were about to be cut off.

Then came Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Asiwaju was quick to rally those he could and sent gifts to those he could not. He is reported to have provided the needed funds that Ganduje’s pockets could not provide, and paid off the media, the noisy politicians and their social media warriors.

Ganduje made it to the primaries, pumped Asiwaju’s dollars into the delegates stomach’s and moved to round two, where he got stuck at with a re-run.

He tactically manoeuvred the system and emerged the winner of the elections. But that was not the end for Ganduje.

Asiwaju Comes Through Again!

With a very suspicious win, Ganduje was in the courtrooms defending his Asiwaju-earned electoral victory. This was too much a burden for him. My friend did not have enough friends to pull a Wike-Odili-card that would ensure a smooth ride in the courts.

Then again, Dr Ganduje turned to the West. Our brother Asiwaju came through again. 

During the 2019 Colloquium, he showered Asiwaju praises from heaven to earth. Called him all sort of sweet names, that a man wooing a woman would use. 

Asiwaju deserved it, he had literally made Ganduje all that he was!

The Promise of a Vice President

Asiwaju is a taunter. He throws a promise here and there to his friends and makes them happy. If you think I am lying ask Rotimi Amaechi. In 2015, under the bunkers of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Asiwaju promised that if Amaechi could rally all the Governors to support Buhari in the primaries, he would give him the slot for the Vice Presidential candidate.

Ganduje has been offered this same promise. It is not surprising that Ganduje is mobilising all resources available to deliver Asiwaju in 2023.

He is heard to have promised to finance Asiwaju’s campaign for the 2023 elections.

Now he is setting the campaign mood for his benefactor.

The Emirs Are Gathered

On Monday the 29th of March 2021, Dr. Ganduje would gather a host of Northern bigwigs and kingmakers to come and pay homage to the man he is sponsoring for President.

Among these wide ranges of Northern elites would be several Emirs. They would come and bless Asiwaju’s 2023 ambition with their presence and their sweet words.

Ganuje’s Colloquium for Asiwaju Tinubu indeed tells the story of the Common Bond between the two, more than it is of Nigeria.

According to the World Economic Forum, 40% of the world’s landmass is arid and with the climatic changes and rising temperatures more of it will soon turn into desert. Polish President Andrzej Duda has tested positive for coronavirus but is feeling good, presidential minister Blazej Spychalski announced on Saturday.

“The president yesterday was tested for the presence of coronavirus. The result turned out to be positive. The president is fine. We are in constant contact with the relevant medical services,” Spychalski said on Twitter.

Duda’s infection comes as the country faces a surge in the COVID-19 epidemic, with new infections hitting a daily record of more than 13,600 on Friday.

Duda, 48, holds a mainly ceremonial role, but has the power to veto legislation. He is an ally of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.

From Saturday, more restrictions to curb the spread of the virus are due to come into force in Poland, including a two-week shutdown of restaurants and bars.

The Health Ministry reported 153 coronavirus deaths on Friday, taking the total toll to 4,172.

No fewer than fifty-one people have been killed since the start of #EndSARS protests in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Friday.

The statement by Buhari is the first announcement which the president admitted there were deaths.

Buhari, however, did not say whether security forces were responsible for the civilian deaths, but did note that 11 police officers and seven soldiers were “killed by rioters,” taking the total number of fatalities to 69.
“Throughout the disturbances, security agencies observed extreme restraint,” Buhari said in a virtual meeting with former Nigerian leaders on the security situation in the country.

Buhari further noted that he had granted the protesters concessions, after the beginning of demonstrations about two weeks ago against a special police unit (SARS) known for its brutality.

The president said the Federal Government had agreed to scrap the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), saying “protesters refused to call off the protest… Instead, they became emboldened and gradually turned violent.”

“It is unfortunate that the initial genuine…protest of the youths in parts of the country against SARS has been hijacked and misdirected,” Buhari added.

According to a transcript, President Buhari did not mention holding anyone accountable for the deaths but said there had been widespread damage to property and that thousands of inmates had been freed from correctional centres during the unrest.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are among those leaders who have issued statements against the killings.

Celebrities have also got behind the movement on social media, with American popstar Rihanna and others tweeting their support.

Maikanti Baru, the immediate past group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), is dead.

He was 60 years old as at the time of his death, and only two months away from his 61st birthday.

This was disclosed by Mele Kyari, the current GMD of the state-run oil company.

“My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,” Kyari said tweeted.

“He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.”

Baru was appointed NNPC GMD by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2016, a position he held up until 2019.

Baru announced his retirement from NNPC in July 2019 when he clocked the age of 60.

“Today, having clocked the statutory age of 60, I have retired from the services of NNPC. I wish the new GMD Mallam Mele Kyari and his Team success. Thank you President Muhammadu Buhari for the opportunity to serve,” he tweeted on July, 2019.

Baru was born in July 1959 in Misau, Bauchi state.

He attended Federal Government College, Jos for his secondary education where he graduated in 1978.

In 1982, he obtained his bachelor of engineering degree from Ahmadu Bello University.

Baru has a doctorate in Computer Aided Engineering from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

He was the 18th GMD of NNPC.

A former club owner in Minneapolis says that both George Floyd and the police officer seen kneeling on his neck moments before he died in custody on Monday both worked security at her business until the end of last year.


Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the officer who was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department after video emerged of the moments leading up to Floyd’s death, were employed by the El Nuevo Rodeo club, according to the owner.


‘Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open,’ Maya Santamaria told KSTP-TV. Santamaria said that she is not sure if the two men knew each other since there were some two dozen security guards, including off-duty officers, working at her club on any given night.

But she revealed there were occasions when they would have been working at the same event. ‘They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside.’


‘I didn't recognize George as one of our security guys because he looked really different lying there like that.’ The club which Santamaria owned for some two decades was sold recently. She still owns and operates a radio station, 95.7FM La Raza, which is located in the same building.


The building, which is without power due to ongoing protests, is just two blocks east of the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct, which was set on fire by rioters as officers fled the building in their squad cars. Several businesses in the area have also been affected, as glass doors and windows have been shattered. Many of the buildings are now covered in graffiti. ‘All of the neighborhood has come out to volunteer and clean up and lend a hand,’ Santamaria said.

Kylie Jenner is no longer a billionaire, according to Forbes . Jenner, now 22, was named last year by Forbes as "The Youngest Self-Made Billionaire Ever." Jenner had made millions from her company, Kylie Cosmetics, which she later sold a 51% stake to the beauty company Coty in a deal that valued her company at $1.2 billion.

But, Forbes' Chase Peterson-Withorn and Madeline Berg reported this week that Jenner and her mother, Kris Jenner, inflated their wealth in documents they provided to the publication about Kylie's personal wealth and her company's revenue. "It's clear that Kylie's camp has been lying," Forbes reported.

Her wealth is likely closer to just under $900 million, according to Forbes' estimate. However, Kylie Jenner and her team has declined to comment to Forbes about the matter. Among a list of discrepancies, Forbes said the Jenners had previously told them Kylie's cosmetics company had $360 million in sales in 2018, but a Coty presentation showed revenues were actually closer to $125 million that year.

In addition to the adjusted estimates for Kylie Cosmetics' revenues, Forbes accounted for the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on cosmetics companies, as Kylie still owns part of the company. Kylie and Forbes had drawn scrutiny after she was named a "self-made" billionaire, as critics said she was born into wealth.

After much debate over whether or not Serie A should or shouldn’t resume the suspended 2019-20 season, the official resumption announcement has been made.


The Italian Minister of Sport, Vincenzo Spadafora, confirmed that the government has given the FIGC clearance to resume play. Play on the peninsula will resume first with the Coppa Italia semifinal second legs on June 13th, followed by the cup final on June 17th. Serie A will then resume league play on June 20th.


With Germany having resumed Bundesliga play on May 16, La Liga returning on June 8th, and the Premier League set to resume on June 17th, all four of Europe’s top four leagues are planning on aiming to play out their league calendars. This is something to give football deprived fans something to look forward to.

Spadafora had the following to say about the today’s meeting that led to the announcement.

“It was a very useful meeting and, as we had said from the start, football was always going to resume when we had the conditions to ensure safety and the CTS gave the all-clear to the protocols,” said Spadafora.

“Italy is getting back on its feet and it is only right that football should do the same. The CTS agreed with the medical protocol, but confirmed the absolute necessity for a quarantine period if a player were to test positive."

“We also received guarantees the process of swabs for players must not affect or detract from the general population’s access to testing in any way.

“The FIGC also assured me that the Plan B (play-offs and play-outs) and Plan C (using the existing table) can be adopted in case of suspension. It is not up to me as Minister to decide, as that will be done by the FIGC.

“In the light of all those events, we can today say that the season can resume from June 20.”

Fortune 500 company-FACEBOOK, in a blog post on Friday, stated that GIPHY- a leader in visual expression and creation is going to be part of one of the Facebook family of apps- INSTAGRAM.

Axios reported on Friday that the tech giant has agreed to acquire GIPHY for a deal value of $400million.

According to Axios, the two companies started transaction talks before the Coronavirus pandemic, saying that the talk was more about partnership than acquisition.

GIPHY according to Facebook "makes everyday conversations more entertaining, and so we plan to further integrate their GIF library into Instagram and our other apps so that people can find just the right way to express themselves.

As revealed by Facebook's data, 50% of GIPHY's traffic comes from the Facebook family of apps, Instagram providing half of the 50% traffic.

The Director of Product on Instagram's Business Platform, Vishal Shah in the blog post said," A lot of people in our community already know and love GIPHY. In fact, 50% of GIPHY’s traffic comes from the Facebook family of apps, half of that from Instagram alone. By bringing Instagram and GIPHY together, we can make it easier for people to find the perfect GIFs and stickers in Stories and Direct. The Federal House of Representatives has constituted a committee to investigate bribery allegations leveled against it by a group.

The decision was taken during Tuesday’s plenary while the house was adopting a motion of ‘personal explanation’ by the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase (APC-Plateau).

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) on Monday, had alleged that it has intercepted report that the leadership of the House of Representatives was poised to forcefully pass the compulsory vaccine bill without subjecting it to the traditions of legislative proceedings.

The body in the statement by its spokesperson, Imo Ugochinyere, alleged that $10 million was offered by the American billionaire, Bill Gates, to influence the speedy passage of the bill without recourse to any public hearing adding that the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, should be impeached if he forces the bill on members.

However, no evidence of such an alleged bribe was provided by the group. The speaker however, defended his promotion on the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, arguing that its content and timing were appropriate. He also pledged that there would be a public hearing where Nigerians would be given the opportunity to contribute to the draft law.

Adopting the point of order, the house also resolved to take legal action against an online media organization for allegedly reporting that the house collected $10 billion from Bill Gates to pass the bill. While moving the motion, Mr. Wase said that it was reported by an online media organisation that the house collected $10 billion to pass the bill.

Mr Wase said he had not collected anything neither was he aware of any member of the house that had collected money from anyone on that account. Also, the Majority Leader of the house, Alhassan Doguwa, (APC-Kano) said that he saw the report alleging that members were given money to pass the bill.

Mr Doguwa said he did not collect money from anyone adding that the house was doing its job in line with what was necessary for the safety of the people. The Minority Leader of the House, Ndudi Elumelu, (PDP-Delta) said he read on an online news medium that Mr. Gates offered the house $10 billion to pass the bill.

Mr Elumelu said he did not get any money and no member of the minority group had collected any amount to support the bill. Meanwhile, Mr. Gbajabiamila said that issues with such baseless accusations would be given credence when responded to.

He said the action of the online media had, however, given credence to the need to regulate social media and online publications. The speaker added that the allegation was weighty enough for legal action to be taken against the media organization “to serve as a deterrent to others.”

While adopting the motion, the house mandated its clerk to liaise with the majority leader of the house and the legal adviser to the National Assembly to commence legal action. The speaker also named Henry Nwawuoba (PDP, Imo) to chair the ad-hoc committee.

Some officials of the Abia State Government manning the state’s borders with the security officers have turned back some youth who were about to enter the state while hiding inside a truck used to load cattle.

This is despite the lockdown order in the state and the banning of interstate travels across the country. A video of the incident has been circulating on social media. Officials of the Abiagovernment are seen in the video ordering the youth to assemble by the roadside for a headcount. The incident was also confirmed to Premium Times by an official of the state.

“My men climbed inside the truck to search it, and then asked all of them to come out,” the head of Homeland Security, Abia state, Dan Okoli, said of the interception of the truck which he said was about driving into Abia from Enugu. “There were about 11 of them (hiding at the back of the truck where the cattle were).”

Mr. Okoli said the youth, including the truck driver, could not speak any language other than Hausa, so it was difficult for them to be interrogated. Mr. Okoli and his team allowed the cattle to pass but turned back the youth. “If we had turned back the cows, a lot of them may die on their way,” he said.

He said he received a report from his officials that another of such truck with about 30 youth inside was prevented from entering the state at night. Abia State is said to have 41 entry points. The homeland security deploys over 300 officials daily to man 16 of the entry points where vehicles could drive through into the state.

“When I discover new tricks they use to come in, I make sure I intimate my people for them to re-strategize,” Mr. Okoli said.“We have to do everything possible to protect our people. The federal government has said that inter-state movement is prohibited, except for essential products or exempted persons – those who do some essential duties.”

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha has announced that the current ban on flights in and out of the country has been extended by 4 weeks.


During the daily briefing, the SGF stated: "The ban on all flights will be extended for an additional 4 weeks."
At the briefing, THE SGF also admonished state governments to address the Almajiri situation squarely.

Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the founder of Daar Communications Plc, owners of Raypower FM and Africa International Television (AIT), has tested positive for COVID-19.

Also, his daughter-in-law, three grandchildren together with four other relations tested positive.

However, Dokpesi Jnr who happens to be one of his sons had earlier been positive of Coronavirus and had been taken to an Isolation Centre.

For precautionary measures, those that Dokpesi Jnr had made contacts with needed to be tested to ascertain their status, hence, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, his household and those he made contacts with had to be tested.

A statement on Friday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said: “Following the test that was carried out on our Chairman- Chief Raymond Dokpesi Jnr on Thursday April 23, 2020 by the NCDC which eventually proved positive and his subsequent admission into the isolation centre on Friday April 24, 2020; we wish to state that in conformity with the Federal Government protocol on the COVID 19 administration and management, his entire household and those that had contacts with him were subsequently subjected to the test and with so much emotional pains, we hereby announce that the under listed have equally been confirmed positive:
“1) High chief Aleogho Dokpesi ( His Father/ Founder DAAR Communications PLC) 2) Our chairman’s wife 3) His 3 Children 4) some Relatives A total of 8.

As expected, the confirmed cases have been immediately taken to the Federal Government isolation centre at Gwagwalada in Abuja.

“The Board, Management and the entire staff wish them their prayers and the grace of the good Lord for speedy recovery from the COVID 19 pandemic.”

WHATSAPP, The American freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol (IP) service owned by Facebook has gone a step further, making it possible for its video call feature to admit as much as eight people simultaneously in a call.

Users of Android and iPhone can now add twice the previous number of people allowed in a video call on WhatsApp.

Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp disclosed the latest quirk in a Video Call News last week. According to the report, the Video Call upgrade is now accessible for iOS and Andriod device users running the newest model of the application.

The new quirk on WhatsApp, which at the moment is the most actively used messaging application with over 2 billion users around the globe, provides a more suitable substitute for other Conference call platforms like Zoom, Houseparty, FaceTime, as well as Skype.

Nevertheless, though WhatsApp still dawdles with some of the big players in the game like Google Duo which allows 12 calls at a time; Google Meet with as much as 100 people for private users and 250 for business and educational purposes; Apple's FaceTime allowing 32 callers and Zoom permitting 500 callers on priced premium, the messaging app-WhatsApp is now in the category with Houseparty allowing 8 callers as well.

WhatsApp's parent company, Facebook also recently introduced Messenger Rooms on Facebook which allows for shared videos and text conversations by a large group.
Contacts outside and across the Facebook family of apps such as Facebook Messanger, Instagram and WhatsApp can be drafted to Messenger Rooms allowing for as much as 50 persons to communicate at the same time.

Messenger Rooms can be created on Facebook Messenger or Facebook itself, either the application or website version. The highlight of some of Messenger Rooms' features includes the use of Augmented Reality (AR) to adjust on-screen looks, 360-degree backgrounds that include a giant ball pit, a black hole and more, adjustable lighting mode to improve video calls.
