18. 1968 Subaru 360 The Subaru 360 was a tiny, adorable, bubble-shaped car that resembled the Volkswagen Beetle. The 360 looks cute, but don’t be deceived by looks, this car is terrible. Less than ten feet long and powered by a 25 horsepower two-stroke engine, the Subaru 360 goes nowhere fast. Top speed of the 360 was 55 mph and it took 37.5 seconds to go from zero to 50 mph. The doors are hinged at the rear edges and open into the wind. There are no burst-proof latches and the drivers door cannot be locked from the inside. God forbid you didn’t fully latch the door before you started driving, as a burst of air at as low as 20 mph would fling your door open with ease. If you encountered a vehicle you needed to pass (which would probably be a feat in itself) it took over 30 seconds to go from 30 to 50 mph.

17. 1966 Peel Trident The Peel Trident looks like it belongs in a low rent science fiction movie. Shaped like a flying saucer, the Trident was designed and built in the Isle of Man in the 1960’s. It was the second three-wheeled microcar developed by the Peel Engineering Company. The Trident had a clear bubble top made of plexiglass, and as much as it looked futuristic, it was a terrible idea. The sun beating down on the plexiglass made the interior uncomfortably hot. The engine was a 49 cc DKW engine, and had a top speed of 28 mph. The trident was also cramped, turned out being one of the smallest cars in the world was a negative feature. One the plus side the Trident did get 83 mpg.

16. 1961 Corvair One of the main reasons the Corvair was such a terrible car was due to Chevrolet neglecting to put a decent rear suspension in the vehicle. Due to the power of the rear engine 6 cylinder the Corvair was packing, it was very easy to spin out. This is a common issue with rear engine vehicles, and the best way to counter it is with a good suspension to make the issue manageable. On top of being hard to control, the Corvair was prone to oil leaks and there were claims that the single-piece steering column could impale the driver in a frontal crash. The heating system had a tendency to pump fumes into the car as well, due to a gasoline-burner heater located in the front “trunk.”

15. 1961 Amphicar The Amphicar was designed to be a car and a boat, the problem was it wasn’t very good at either of these jobs. As a car the handling was average but the engine wasn’t particularly great and it wasn’t much of a looker either. As a boat the Amphicar was incredibly slow, with a top speed of 7 mph. It maneuvered through the water rather well considering it was a boat-car, but the biggest problem was that the Amphicar was not water tight. The car leaked from various places and the only reason the car stayed afloat was because the bilge pump was able to keep up with the leaks. If the bilge pump wore out, or was unable to keep up, the Amphicar would cease to be a boat and turn into a sinking car.

14. 1958 Zundapp Janus Zundapp was a well known motorcycle manufacturer based in Nuremberg, Germany. During a low point in motorcycle sales the company decided to try its hand at building a car. Based on a Dornier prototype, the Janus was powered by a 250cc 14 horsepower engine, with a top speed of 50 mph. If you actually wanted to go 50 mph, you needed plenty of road and time on your hands. The backseat had a rear facing bench seat, so passengers could watch traffic go around this slow moving pile of metal. The Janus’s design resembled a trapezoidal shaped VW Bug, with less charm. Sales were dismal, and the Janus was discontinued, ending this rolling hazards life as an automobile.

13. 1958 MGA Twin Cam The original motor offered in the MGA was a fine engine, but someone at MG decided that the MGA needed more power and the company offered an optional high-performance engine with dual overhead cams. This motor was not the upgrade that MG wanted it to be. The engine leaked, burned pistons, fouled spark plugs, and caused all kinds of headaches for owners. Unless you were a gearhead and routinely checked timing, fuel octane, and made sure to stay within RPM limits the Twin Cam motor would break apart and puke oil all over the place. Long after the vehicle was retired, the problem was narrowed down to the carburetors. At certain RPMs the fuel would froth, causing a lean condition and burning the pistons.

12. 1958 Lotus Elite Back in the 50’s, fiberglass was used as an alternative to steel when building sports cars. It was durable, versatile, lighter than steel, and cheaper than aluminium. Fiberglass was the carbon fiber of the 50’s and Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus, was all about using it. The Lotus Elite was built primarily out of the material. Weighing 1,100 lbs and powered by a 75 horsepower engine, the Elite was a very successful race car. It was also a very popular little coupe, that was until the suspension mounts couldn’t handle the strain of the vehicle and broke through the body. Weight reduction is a good thing in race cars, there is a line that crosses into the unsafe and the vehicle is no longer structurally sound. Chapman found this out the hard way with the Lotus Elite.

11. 1958 Ford Edsel The Ford Edsel was doomed once the hype machine surrounding the car got rolling. The marketing department at Ford led everyone to believe the Edsel would be a fantastical car of the future, a plutonium powered scientific wonder. What they delivered was a Mercury. The Edsel wasn’t that bad a car. Sure it looked kinda plain, it drank gas, and it was far too expensive, especially during the 50’s recession, but it wasn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. Some critics blame the Edsel’s failure on the grille, which resembled a vagina. Apparently 50’s America was really phobic about the female nether regions. In truth it was probably a mixture of all of the above as well as the public jumping on the bandwagon with critics.

10. 1957 Waterman Aerobile Waldo Waterman once heard aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss remark how he would like to drive and airplane away from the airfield. After hearing this Waterman went to work and spent years developing the Aerobile. In 1934 he flew a prototype, the “Arrowplane”, which was a high wing monoplane with tricycle wheels. The wings folded against the fuselage when it was on the ground, like an insect’s wings. The fact that the wings folded backwards is terrifying to think about, considering a failure in the air would just fold the wings back and plunge you to your death. Decades later in 1957 Waterman perfected his design, the Aerobile. No one wanted to tempt death by buying one of these machines, so the one working prototype resides in the Smithsonian as the first flying car.

9. 1957 King Midget Model III In the 50’s, Caud Dry and Dale Orcutt, of Athens, Ohio, decided that they were going to create cars that everyone could afford. They started with the Model I, offering the vehicle as a home-built kit. The kit contained a frame, axles, and sheet metal patterns that needed to be crafted by someone with fabrication skills. Any single-cylinder engine would power the vehicle. It was like a giant do-it yourself model that you could drive down the road after you built it. Somehow they remained in business until the late 60’s, with their crowning achievement being the Model III. The Model III was a folded steel box with a 9 horsepower motor. Thankfully government safety standards caused the King Midget to become nothing more than a memory.

8. 1956 Renault Dauphine The Renault Dauphine is a french made vehicle that originally was to be named the Corvette. Luckily that name was used for a much better vehicle. The Dauphine was so rickety and the metal used was so paper thin that rust was guaranteed. The design was similar to other cars of the time, it just used low quality materials. Worse than the shoddy construction was the Dauphines performance. It took the drivers of Road and Track 32 seconds to reach 60 mph. That’s slower than even the weakest vehicles sold today. Somehow this super cheap, poorly built vehicle managed to sell over 2 million units around the world. Just goes to show that at the time people would buy any car, just to say that they had a car.

7. 1949 Crosley Hotshot The Crosley Hotshot was the first postwar America sports car, and it was a pile of garbage. The Hotshot was slow, dangerous, and weighed very little for a steel car, clocking in at 1,100 lbs. The Hotshot can be seen in the 1961 driver’s ed video Mechanized Death, where it appears mangled and smashed up. The Hotshot was designed by Powel Crosley Jr., of Cincinnati. Crosley had radio fame, but he wanted to build cars, which he did, poorly. It had CIBA (Cast-Iron Block Assembly) which was average at the time. There was good things too… A Super Sport (Hotshot with doors) won the Efficiency Index at the 1951 LeMans race.

6. 1934 Chrysler/DeSoto Airflow Truthfully the only reason that the Airflow is labeled as a “worst” car is that it was ahead of its time. The design of the Airflow is similar to cars that were developed in the 50’s. Aerodynamic body, steel subframe, 50-50 weight distribution, and light weight are all features of the Airflow. For whatever reason though, in the 30’s Americans did not get on board with the Airflow’s dramatically different design style. Some of the issue likely was derived from the major problems that plagued the Airflow. It’s never good when an engine falls out of a car. The radical construction techniques used to craft the Airflow had yet to be perfected. Chrysler and Desto tried to restyle later models, but there was no coming back from the bad taste already in the consumers mouths and sales never took off.

5. 1933 Fuller Dymaxion Designed by R. Buckminster Fuller, the Fuller Dymaxion was initially conceived as a flying machine. The plan was to install jet engines and inflatable wings, so you could drive it like a car and then inflate the wings and fly away when you want a plane. The wings never became a part of the production model, and without them the Dymaxion looked like a goofy pill rolling down the road. The Dymaxion was a three-wheel vehicle, with a levered A-arm carrying the rear wheel, which swiveled like the tail of an airplane. The first model had a terrible wobble from the rear wheel, the next two built were bigger and heavier, while the third model had a stabilizer fin on the roof. A fatal accident involving the Dymaxion ( due to unknown causes) killed the vehicles chances of public acceptance.

4. 1920 Briggs and Stratton Flyer By time 1920 rolled around we had started to get the hang of building automobiles. Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, and Voisin were all producing luxurious automobiles and pushing forward with technological advancements. On the other end of the spectrum was the Briggs and Stratton Flyer. Compared to other automobiles you could hardly call the Flyer a car, it was pretty much a motorized bench with bicycle tires on it. No body, no suspension, no windshield, and no style, this vehicle was an attempt to make a very cheap automobile. The Flyer was powered by a tiny 2 horsepower engine driving a traction wheel, similar to a boat with an outboard motor. No actual power went to the Flyers axles.

3. 1913 Scripps-Booth Bi-Autogo The Scripps-Booth Bi-Autogo was a massive 3,200 lb motorcycle with training wheels, a V8 engine, and copper tubing everywhere. This crazy idea is the brainchild of James Scripps-Booth, an heir of the Scripps publishing fortune and a self taught auto engineer. The two-wheeled Bi-Autogo carried the weight of the vehicle on 37-in wooden wheels. When going slow, the driver could lower smaller wheels on outriggers to stabilize the vehicle, preventing it from tipping over. Even for 1913 this was a bizarre vehicle. One good thing that came out of the creation of the Bi-Autogo is the V8 engine. This was the first vehicle to come out of Detroit with a V8 engine in it, making it at least somewhat important to history.

2. 1911 Overland OctoAuto Designer Milton Reeves rejected the general consensus that automobiles only needed four wheels, feeling that six or eight wheels was a better idea. Under the auspice that more wheels would equate to a smoother ride, Reeves began modifying a 1910 Overland. Welding in some parts, adding two more axles and four more guncart-style wheels, Reeves gave birth to the OctoAuto. He displayed the Frankenstein monster of a car proudly at the Indianapolis 500. The OctoAuto measured over 20ft long. Zero orders for this hideous vehicle were made, but Reeves didn’t let that stop him. The following year he tried again with the Sextauto, which was a six wheel, single axle design. As evidenced by the lack of six wheels on normal cars today, the Sextauto was also a flop.

1. 1899 Horsey Horseless This bizarre vehicle was intended to soothe the nerves of horses that shared the road with automobiles. From the crackpot mind of inventor Uriah Smith of Battle Creek, Michigan, came a buggy with a wooden horse head attached to the front. Hoping that this would cause the buggy to resemble a horse drawn carriage. Smith even recommended that the horse head be hollow and full of fuel, because that wouldn’t be dangerous or anything right? “The live horse would be thinking of another horse,” said Smith,”and before he could discover his error and see that he had been fooled, the strange carriage would be passed.” History isn’t 100% clear on whether or not the Horsey Horseless was ever built or if it was just a pipe dream from a nut job, either way it’s a terrible idea.

THE Katsina Emirate Council on Thursday declared that the marriage between 14-year-old girl, Habiba Isa, and the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Usman, was irreversible. The council said the marriage and Isa’s conversion to Islam were voluntarily and willingly entered into by the girl. The council told officials of the Katsina State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, who visited Usman in his palace over the issue, that there was no evidence that the 14-year-old girl was forced to act against her wish. The family of Isiyaku Tanko of Warkaza community in the Kudun Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State on Wednesday alleged that Usman forcefully abducted their 14-year-old daughter and forced her into marrying him. She was said to have been abducted on August 16, 2016, by one Jamilu Lawal, an aide of the emir, who worked in the palace. She was converted to Islam and held incommunicado. Isa is expected to clock 15 years on Saturday, October 15, 2016, and would have resumed school for the new academic term, but for her abduction. She was said to have passed her Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination and was expected to start Senior Secondary School. The incident was blown open when the father of the victim lodged a complaint with Stefanos Foundation, a humanitarian civil rights organisation, which took over the matter. Isa was allowed to appear before CAN officials and others in the palace on Thursday, and was asked three questions by the Kaora Katsina, Alhaji Nuhu Abdulkadir, on behalf of the emirate council. She was asked whether she was forcefully converted to Islam, to which she replied no. She was also asked whether the emirate council or any other person forced her into the marriage with the emir, to which she also answered no. The third question was whether by the time she met her husband, she was already experiencing menstrual period, to which she answered yes. The Kaora Katsina said, “The three questions are in line with the dictates of the Islamic religion. Since Isa has voluntarily answered the three questions in our presence, there is no going back on her marriage.” Abdulkadir explained that in as much as the emirate council would not want to be involved in the controversy surrounding the marriage, the palace of the emir was open to all Nigerians irrespective of religion and tribe. A letter purportedly written by Isa’s father was read to the gathering, apologising to the emirate council for any embarrassment the issue might have caused it (the council). The CAN Chairman for Katsina State, Very Rev. Nelson Ugochukwu, however, told the emirate council that Isa’s marriage did not have the consent of her parents, who he said, were crying for justice in Abuja. The CAN leader said the association was not in support of the marriage and her conversion to Islam. He said, “This girl (Isa) standing before us is 14 years. She is supposed to be in school and not given out in marriage. “We are not pleased and we demand justice. Her parents are in Abuja, crying for justice. In my religion, you cannot give out any lady in marriage without the consent of her parents. This marriage does not have the consent of this little girl’s parent. The parents are not happy with what has happened. “As the CAN chairman in Katsina, I am the father of all Christians in the state. Our people are not happy. The parents told me that the girl is 14 years. She is supposed to be in school. I want justice to be done in this matter. I want the emirate to look into the matter. To us, the girl is still a Christian.” http://punchng.com/emirs-marriage-14-year-old-irreversible-katsina-emirate-council/ |
y HENRY UMORU & JOSEPH ERUNKE When Ministers began the defence of their budgets, last week, errors in the document made the Senate to express worries over what has now been described as padding by the Executive arm arising from high overhead and personnel costs, just as this development led to the lawmakers asking the Ministers and heads of parastatals to go back and rejig the budget document and return for re-presentation. It was a case of lack of coordination between ministries and the Office of Budget and National Planning against the backdrop of some ministers’ claim that what they presented was different from what the Office of Budget and National Planning approved which Bed to the confusion that characterized the budget defence. As the defence progressed, almost N10 billion was discovered to have been illegally inserted into education budget. The Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, uncovered N9,982,258,479 hidden in the budget of the parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Education. The committee discovered that allocation to the ministry’s per annum increased at geometric progression by almost N10 billion while the personnel cost for the ministry reduced. Consequently, the committee Chairman ruled that the ministry officials should go back and come up with realistic overhead costs, saying its discovery was that the huge sum was deliberately hidden under the parastatals’ personnel cost. As seen, the ministry’s parastatals’ personnel cost rose from N88.1 billion in 2015 to N98.1 billion in 2016 estimate proposals while the personnel budget of universities reduced by as much as N16.245 billion, declining from N227.2 billion in 2015 to N211.0 billion in 2016. Similarly, colleges of education budget decreased from N40.2 billion in 2015 to N37.6 billion, while polytechnics’ personnel cost, which previously stood at N61.44 billion in 2015, was trimmed to N58.23 billion just as unity colleges’ budget had been cut from N288.7billion to N7.588 billion. The ministry reduced its budget by only N244.9 million from N3.768 billion in 2015 to N3.523 billion in 2016. UNESCO was the worst hit with the drastic reduction of its budget from N288.3 billion in 2015 to N7.588 billion in 2016. Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Secondary School Education for the budget defence, accompanied by his ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Folasade Yemi-Esan, gave account of the education budget performance in 2015. Anwuka said N483.183 billion budget was earmarked for education in 2015, with only N13.279 billion released. He added that only 50 per cent of N23.5 billion, amounting to N11.9 billion, was released for capital education. However, after his submission, a member of the committee and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, queried the rationale behind the increase in votes to parastatals by about N10 billion while the budget of universities reduced by as much N16 billion. Adeyeye wondered why parastatals, which were meant to support the institutions, should have their personnel budget increased by such a huge volume. He, therefore, demanded for an explanation. Meanwhile, senators were shocked when the Health Minister, Professor Isaac Adewole, disowned the 2016 Budget document, raising the alarm that it was not acceptable to him because the original document had been distorted and strange figures smuggled in. The Health Minister, who appeared before the Senator Lanre Tejuosho-led Committee on Health to defend the allocations to his ministry, told the committee members that they should discard the votes. Adewole, who noted that the provisions of the budget before the National Assembly were in contrast to the priorities of the health sector as contained in the original budget it prepared, stressed that some of the votes earmarked for the ministry for some activities had been re-distributed while important fields in the sector had been excluded. He pleaded with the senators to wait for new estimates that would be re-submitted, adding that the new estimates would reflect the programmes of the health sector in 2016. In the course of the budget defence, it was discovered that only N29 billion was voted for the Ministry of Agriculture in an era of diversification of the economy. Other scandalous allocations in the 2016 Appropriation Bill include N3.87billion allocated for capital projects at the State House Clinic while the country’s 16 federal government-owned teaching hospitals individually got a fraction of the allocation. The Presidency also proposed to spend N322,421,971 to link a cable to the drivers’ restroom at the Presidential Villa. Another N213,873,953 was proposed for linking of a cable from Guest House No 9 generator house to the gate. The draft document allocated N618,604,265 for the installation of electrical lighting and fittings at the Villa, which means spending N1.6 million daily installing lighting and fittings and another N371,733,964 for the installation of electrical distribution boards and other cables. In the draft budget, N436,054,626 was allocated for meals and refreshment, canteen/kitchen equipment, foodstuff and catering materials for the President and the Vice President. While N20,260,300 was proposed for sporting and games equipment for the Presidential Air Fleet, another N39,075,000 was proposed for the purchase of recreational facilities at the State House. Meanwhile, the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation proposed to spend another N193,513,097 for recreational facilities. In the draft document, the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing proposed to spend N140,000,000 for the construction of a single solar borehole, and N161,500,000 for the construction of a motorised borehole, just as the Ministry of Interior budgeted N576,500,000 for the construction/provision of electricity, N595,606,148 for repair/ rehabilitation, and N6.2 billion for research and development and the Nigerian Prisons Service to spend N500,000,000 for capacity building. Following the confusion on the budget, the National Assembly said that the passage of the Appropriation Bill, earlier fixed for end of this month, was no longer feasible. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/budget-padding-scandalous-votes-and-eagle-eyed-senators/ |
By Emeka Anaeto & Babajide Komolafe Following the controversy over the alleged padding and errors in the 2016 Budget, some corporate economics have raised concern on the implication for national economy recovery and foreign capital inflow. Sunday Vanguard learnt that some Nigerian companies that have been in talks with their foreign partners over counterpart funding of joint ventures have been forced to hold action since mid last year over policy uncertainties following the election of new government. While many of them expressed satisfaction with the process and outcome of the election, they were non-committal over prospects of funding their Nigerian investments preferring to wait for a clear policy direction from the new government. The first shock was the long delay in rolling out the cabinet which elongated policy positions while also elongating the waiting time for foreign investors’ commitments. Economy observers were of the view that while there is massive decline in government revenue following the oil price crash, 2016 Budget, which provided for massive economic stimulus, gave hopes of economic recovery amidst the dwindling revenue. However, a top executive of a Nigerian company whose foreign partners have adopted the waiting position, told Sunday Vanguard, at the weekend, that the companies had thought they would wait for about three months after the take-off of the new government but lamented that ‘’we are now in the tenth month and our partners are still saying they will wait for some more time”. According to him, the on-going controversy over the 2016 Budget has further complicated the relationship with their partners and the fate of the joint venture as they had hoped that the budget, which they saw as a good one with clear policy positions, appears to have run into a glitch. Analysing the situation further, chief economist at FSDH Merchant Bank, Mr. Ayodele Akinwunmi, said the controversy over the budget creates more uncertainty for investors who had delayed their decision up till now. ‘’It may also delay the implementation of the projects in the budget which will not make an average Nigerian to feel the impact of the current government,”Akinwunmi said. However, another notable economist, Mr. Bismarck Rewane who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Financial Derivatives Company, is more concerned with the assumptions of the budget which he sees some problems than the issue of errors which he believed would easily be resolved. ‘’The errors in the budget are not an issue, they can be corrected. The real issues are the assumptions of the budget. The crude oil price, the production target, exchange rate and inflation rate, these are the real issues, that determine the effectiveness of the budget,”Rewane stated. In the same line of argument, the Deputy President of Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Issa Aremu, pointed out: ‘’The President has said they (errors) would be corrected, and those responsible would be punished. What we should be concerned about is if the budget would be used to boost the economy and then strengthen the Naira. Will the budget be used to boost local production through patronage of locally produced goods, or it would be spent on imported goods and hence weaken local production? These should be our concerns’’. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/budget-crisis-puts-foreign-investments-on-hold/ |
ABUJA-Vice president Yemi Osinbajo has said that no volume of pressure or calls from the elites would derail president Mohammadu Buhari or himself from carrying the anti-corruption war to its logical conclusion. And that in the last 16 years there was not a single federal government completed road project including rail, as the cost of projects were inflated, saying that “The reason is corruption”. Revealing that there had been a plethora of calls and efforts by the highly placed Nigerians to stop the probes, the Vice President stated that said both of them had no other agenda but “the progress of this country.” Osinabjo spoke yesterday during a meeting in his office with a delegation from the Moslem Congress of Nigeria led Imam Abdulahi Shuaib at the presidential villa, Abuja. His submission was contained in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Laolu Akande. According to the statement, the Vice President said that the development was a strange morality emanating from some Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines. “We get regular messages from some Nigerian elites saying cool down. It is a very strange morality that some of those people have, very complicated but cutting across all tribes and religious differences. “Mr. President and I are extremely focussed on what we need to do. We will focus on critical things, infrastructure and social investments”, he said. Osinbajo who was miffed by the attitude however noted that the many Nigerians could still discern between what is right and wrong. He said “the masses don’t have that problem.” Re-echoing that the elites who felt unperturbed were saying “it is not a big deal,” stressing that government should merely ask the looters of the commonwealth to return the money and go, Osinbajo expressed gladness that “a new tribe of Nigerians who would not compromise their values but would maintain a sense of right and wrong is now emerging”. “The man on the street is very clear, so whatever some of these elites say, we shall keep our focus on the masses who voted for us,” the Vice President declared. He said it is simply unacceptable that in the last 16 years there was not a single federal government completed road project including rail, the Vice President added that cost of projects were also inflated, saying that “The reason is corruption”. He said it was the same inordinate desire for enrichment that explains why money meant to procure arms were being distributed among persons at a time when the territorial integrity of the nation was being attacked. “The insurgency has gone on for 6 years because government could not adequately equip the military,” he stated. Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation, Shuaib conveyed the support of the organization to the government in its programmes including anti-corruption, and expressed readiness to offer assistance. According to him, “we are thankful that our candidates of choice in the election emerged.” He said the choice of the President and Vice President were made by God Himself during last year’s presidential election. In a similar note, the Vice President also received delegations from the Nigeria Society of Engineers, NSE and the Facility for Oil Sector Transparency Reform, FOSTER, a group composed of NGOs involved in different issues in the Niger Delta areas. Speaking with the members of NSE, who were led by their President, Engineer Otis Anyaeji, Osinbajo while highlighting the importance of their profession in national development extolled the engineers for their contributions to the society. “There is no question at all that engineers are central to the development of the society,” he noted. Also speaking while receiving FOSTER, also led by Mr. Richard Oshowole, the Vice President restated the government’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta. He commended the group for their initiating a common framework to support the process of development in the area. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/607311/ |
By Kingsley Omonobi Abuja- Military authorities in the Country have warned groups (Biafra agitators) or unpatriotic elements threatening to make the country ungovernable because of their narrow interests, to have a rethink and desist from such, as the armed forces were fully mobilized and ready to crush acts of sabotage. The Defence headquarters in a statement signed by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig-General Rabe Abubakar said, “The attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has been drawn to some newspaper publication by a group of persons threatened to embark on acts of sabotage against the Nigerian state”. “The DHQ hereby warned that the military and other security agencies will not condone any acts by individuals or group that is capable of breach to security and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta or in any part of the country. “This is because the nation’s interest is above that of individual or group’s interest. “In as much as the military recognizes the supremacy of the Constitution which guarantees freedom of expression and association, the constitution also frowns against individuals or groups hiding under it to stir up trouble and insecurity in the land. “Any individual or groups who have genuine complain or grievances should use the available means of dialogue for amicable resolution but certainly not violence, as it will not be tolerated. “The DHQ will continue to partner with other security agencies to protect and provide enabling environment to all citizens to engage in their respective and legitimate businesses without fear of molestation. The Military’s reaction followed the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra’s threat yesterday to make Nigeria ungovernable if the Federal Government failed to conduct a referendum in the South-East. MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups, including the Indigenous People of Biafra, are demanding a referendum in the region to enable the people decide, through voting, whether they wish to secede, or remain in Nigeria. The Biafra activists claim that majority of people in the region would vote in favour of a separation from Nigeria. In a statement, which was made available to Vanguard, MASSOB said it had concluded plans, with other pro-Biafra groups, to disrupt governance in the country, if the Federal Government would not conduct the referendum. The 19-year-old joined the Old Trafford club for £58 million, but his older brother insists that fee will not unsettle him as he is destined to be a star for club and country Anthony Martial is destined to become captain of Manchester United, his brother Dorian says. The 19-year-old joined Louis van Gaal's team for a massive £58 million fee from Monaco on transfer deadline day. However, his brother insists he is worth the heavy investment from the Red Devils and believes he will go on to wear the captain's armband for club and country in the near future. “Anthony has all the qualities needed to be Manchester United and France captain," Dorian told The Sun. "He has always been a natural leader in a team — he’s been like that since he was six. “My little brother isn’t someone who will shout at all the players around him. He doesn’t need to because he speaks with his incredible skills. “Anthony is a talisman and has the ego and personality on the pitch to be a captain of Manchester United and even France. "Of course, not right now — because he is just 19 — but definitely in the future. He comes from a club that has produced two France captains. “Patrice Evra went on to be United skipper while Thierry Henry had the armband at Arsenal. It’s in the DNA here because players are well educated. They’re taught to be responsible but also respectful. “The fee is a lot of money but Anthony will not worry. He doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘Pressure.’" Dorian also recalled how his brother had always shown a desire to play for United, having been a big admirer of Evra and Ryan Giggs. “Anthony grew up watching players like Ryan Giggs, Rooney and Patrice on TV. And I remember him once saying, ‘Wow, why not me one day?’ He loved United’s attacking style of football. “Being in a team of superstars will not faze him. He will be no different playing for United as he was playing with his friends as a child.” Martial used to play for part-time team CO Les Ulis, who produced the likes of Evra, Henry and Yaya Sanogo and the club's former technical director, Mamadou Niakate, says Martial's talent was obvious from a young age. “You could see he had already surpassed the other kids in terms of skill and speed," he said. "He was a serious talent and knew what he wanted even then. “Anthony was determined and hard-working. He had this real hate of losing, almost a fear. It would eat him up, he’d be angry and become isolated. “Thierry was the same. He had that same trait, the same behaviour, the same speed, quality and will to win. That is what separates them from the rest.” http://m.goal.com/s/en-ng/news/4067/england/2015/09/06/15086552/martial-is-a-future-manchester-united-captain |
