It should be fairly easy to understand, and the reason why is what makes religion as cruel as it is. Generally, the poorer people are the more religious they are. One of the key arenas to fight against religion is also the social wellbeing of citizens. Raise people from poverty, give them hope, give them something to live THIS life for safely, and they'll be less likely to believe in a made up life that comes after.
