Happy Sunday Sir, 1mm can be use only if the number light will not exceed the amperage rating of the 1mm. The reasons for 1.5mm is to have rest of mind when the installation is completed and handover to the client . The IEE regulations says 1.mm is for lighting, 2.5mm for sockets, 4mm is for AC and water heater and 6mm for cooker unit. The current rating of 1mm must not exceed 14A while on 1.5mm 19A. If the 1mm is Nigeria cable he can go ahead. Most of the imported cables are not up to the size written on the body.

Am available more clarification.

Thanks

Thank you for your quick response - really appreciate it. He's recommending Cometstar cables, which I understand are Nigerian made cables.

Hello topsy23,
I'm at MEP stage of a family build and my electrician is recommending a mixture of 1.0mm2 and 1.5mm2 cable for lights. No problem for 1.5mm2 but unsure about 1.0mm2. My question is: is he right and do you use 1.0mm2 for lights on domestic building? His reason is that modern electric light bulbs are becoming more energy-efficient (aka LED) and hence low power consumption. Grateful for your advice. Thanks
