The incident occurred on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in Onuimo Local Government Area, when armed men believed to be separatist agitators intercepted Ogbu’s vehicle and whisked him away at gunpoint.

Now, a chilling video surfaced online showing the former lawmaker in captivity. In the footage, heavily armed men identified as members of the so-called Liberation Army issued threats, demanding that security operatives deployed around the “White House” in Okigwe should be withdrawn or they will kill the politician and others under their custody. Authorities in Imo have since launched a full-scale rescue operation, deploying tactical units, intelligence officers, and local security outfits to track down the kidnappers and secure Ogbu’s release. The police spokesperson in the state confirmed the abduction but urged residents to remain calm, assuring that every effort is being made to bring him back alive.

The state government has also condemned the abduction, calling it a direct attack on democracy and peace in Imo. They warned that criminal gangs hiding under the guise of agitation will be crushed. For now, tension remains high in Okigwe and surrounding communities, as the people anxiously await word on Ogbu’s safety. The police have not yet confirmed any breakthrough in the rescue mission, but security patrols have been intensified, and surveillance is ongoing. This abduction adds to the growing wave of insecurity in the South-East, where high-profile kidnappings, attacks on security agents, and violent clashes have become more frequent.
