I will mention you and heaven will not fall. Not everybody is as insensitive to other people's plight. You know the millions of families that will be happy if they can just get to see their loved ones again? This is why people don't fight for the rights of blacks. Have you for once thought about the plight of people in the prisons before? Miserable.

Even in the US some defendants spend years in Jail ( awaiting trial in Nigeria) due to the severity of their cases such as first degree murder which may take up to 5 yrs to conclude.

You don't see Awaiting Trial inmates in Prison but in Jails and the reason they are in Jail is that they can't meet the bail requirements or are considered a flight risk.

What is needed in Nigeria is fir a separate holding facility which should be maintained by the courts and not the Prison service

The courts in so many ways are responsible for the prison congestion and if you go to any prison there are less than 10% of the inmates serving a sentence with the bulk awaiting trial.

The state judiciary is the highest reason for congestion in prisons as most of their courts are jam packed with cases.

Take for example LASG which remands people who break their sanitation laws in prison custody for 3 mths or sharia cases in the north where individuals who break the non alcohol code are remanded in prison custody by their sharia courts.

The only solution is for the Federal and State govts to have separate holding facilities ( Jails) for their awaiting trial inmates.

Also, the criminalization of traffic and sanitation offenses by stares like Lagos should be stopped.

Finally, do you know that due to Amaechi's madness with the Judiciary in Rivers the Prisons became seriously congested as a result of the courts going on strike.

The post is not about whether prisons should scrapped nor abt congestion. It is saying release prisoners as a sign of goodwill. Can't we forgive crime even if it's just once? Even in the bible, Romans had a tradition of releasing one prisoner during their festivals/celebration and that was how Barabbas the notorious robber was released. It is a good omen to release incarcerated ppl.

Sorry student, I don't know where you school but what I know as one of the function of government also include upholding the values of the society. Imagine people like ogwuche that killed hundreds during the Nyanya bombing, Kelvin that have kidnapped and killed uncountables, Kabiru Sokoto that killed hundreds during the Madalla bombing and several others who will never repent and you are here seeking presidential pardon for them.

So on this note, I won't support the idea because people who deem it fit to commit crime should be graciously allowed to serve the punishment for such crime to serve as deterrent to others and to uphold societal norms and values.

Did you read the part about rehabilitation before release into the society? This is a new president. Releasing them is a sign of a New Nigeria. It's either they key into the terms of their release or they go back to jail. Be sensitive

(a) Grant Presidential Pardon to all Inmates and Rehabilitate them.
It shouldn't seem abstract, Nigeria and Nigerians want Positive Change. But a sure way to CHANGE is to let us all have a new beginning. To create a new Nigeria everyone should be given a new lease of life including in-mates. We all deserve a fresh start, Nigeria deserves a fresh start, Nigerians need a fresh start. Presidential Pardon have been granted to Culpable Militants in the past, This gesture should be extended to all in-mates, Rehabilitation should be done for them all before their Re-integration into the society. Mr President, If you can achieve this, you will not only project yourself as a first of your kind. But will print impression of a New Nigeria. Remember sir, that no matter how long a criminal spends in the Prison One day he will still be released except on a life sentence.

(b) Government Oriented People-Oriented Policies.
On an average the government spend about #6000 monthly on an average inmate/prisoner ranging from Free feeding to Health bills, this gesture can also be extended to teeming Nigerian Youths especially after school leaving age, unemployed either properly educated or not. There should be allowances for the unemployed.

(3) Government should Relate with Institutions not with Politicians.
Government should strengthen and empower local institutions, such as the Various unions, Student associations, A government that relates with Institutions such as The Students Association, Workers Associations from all parts of the country is impacting directly on the lives of millions of youths. Government should relate more with institutions so that people can feel the impact of the government. In essense, government should put the Welfare of Members in the hands of this associations not on Politicians since this institutions will in most times be the one pushing for the rights of their members. Government should also ensure proper setup of these institutions to ensure resources are distributed from the higher chains to the lower chains.

SUMMARY
In Summary, Mercy and Pardon, If Properly Annexed, is a stronger force than "Will"
A Criminal/Offender has the will. For Positive Change, The Government should give everyone a fresh start. Amnesty should not be limited to a few. Showing Mercy will go along way to effecting the "Change" Mantra. Rehabilitation Programs should be set in place before their integration into the Society.
