The man in question, whose real names are Timothy Adigun and who was dismissed from the Nigeria Police in 1991 for performing illegal duties, had thereafter assumed different identities to extort members of the public until he was arrested by operatives of State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oyo, on August 12, 2011 at his hideout on Ibadan-Iseyin Road.

In addition to extortion, the Ogbomoso-born Adigun reportedly formed a three-man gang with two others, Tunji and Jimoh, and were robbing people of their motorcycles, while pretending to have arrested them. Also, Adigun made sure that he promoted himself anytime he heard that his course mates in the police force had been promoted, hence his rank as an Inspector though he was dismissed as a Constable!

According to information gathered, the criminal activities of 45-year-old Adigun came out in the open when he was reported by his landlord at Atiba Police Station that he had disappeared with the man's motorcycle. The landlord had informed the police that his tenant who was a policeman attached to the Division had left with his motorcycle for two weeks and had not returned it.

With a similar case previously reported at the same Division, detectives began a manhunt for the suspect. After alerting Oyo SARS about the suspect, operatives from the unit, led by the officer-in-charge, DSP Olusola Aremu, reportedly stormed Adigun's abode at Iya Kola village along Ibadan-Iseyin Road where he was apprehended.

Narrating how his journey into the world of crime began, Adigun, who said he was married with four kids told Sunday Tribune that "After I passed out of Ilorin Grammar School in 1987, I joined the Police Force in 1990. While in secondary school, I was very notorious and was much of a thug. After I left police college in Ilorin, I was working with Kwara State Police Command.

In 1991, I was posted to NNPC depot but left the place for Oke Oyi, NNPC area to mount an illegal checkpoint with three others. We were discovered there by the Officer-in-Charge of Criminal Investigation Department and were arrested. We were taken to the Command headquarters, tried and dismissed.

"After my dismissal, I went back to Ogbomoso and started farming at Iresaadu. Because it was in me to extort, I started collecting money from smugglers who passed through the farm road by putting on my police uniform and flashing my fake police identity card. The smugglers used to 'settle' me with N5,000, N10,000. I was able to use the uniform because I only submitted one to the Police Force

while I kept one back.

"When I noticed that people were beginning to suspect me there, I left the place for Iseyin and started working with Customs officials that were on the road by giving them information about the smugglers whom I already knew. I didn't let the Customs officials know that I had been dismissed from the police. After the smugglers must have settled the Customs officials, the officials would then give me something from whatever they were given.

"I had already spent about five years there when information got to Iseyin police division about me. I was arrested and charged to court. The court sentenced me to two years imprionment in 2008 and I served the term in Agodi Prisons. By the time I came out in 2010, my wife had left with my four children and I have not seen them since, neither do I know their whereabouts.

"On my return from the prison, I left Iseyin for Iya Kola Village along Ibadan-Iseyin road and rented a room there. I started seeing the same smugglers I knew before and after I made them believe that I was previously posted out of that place and had just been posted back, they started 'settling' me with N5,000, N10,000.

"While in prison, I met with Tunji and Jimoh who were Oyo indigenes. They described their house for me in Oyo and after I left the prison, I went to look for them and they introduced me to snatching/stealing motorcycles. They said I could be leading them as an officer while I would be pretending that I was arresting the okada riders. After the arrest, I would tell the rider to meet me at the station but the motorcycle would be taken away to be sold.

"We were able to do that once and I was given N10,000. My gang members told me move closer to Oyo so that we could work smoothly. One of them helped me to get a room in Ilora and I told the landlord that I am a policeman, showing him the picture I took with my uniform. I told him I was working with former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and had to leave Ibadan when he left government, lying that I had just been posted to Oyo Area Command.

"The second time I attempted stealing okada was when I asked my landlord to lend me his motorcycle, telling him that I wanted to travel home. The action was based on the advice of my partners-in-crime. I went to Iya Kola Village and started using the motorcycle personally.

"When he did not see me, my landlord went to Atiba police station to report that the policeman working with the Division had gone away with his bike. Detectives came to arrest me but Tunji and Jimoh escaped".

On how he got the identity card he was using, the suspect said he found the ID card in Ilorin Barracks, removed the passport photo attached to it and put his own. Also speaking on how he was getting his new ranks, Adigun said he used to approach his coursemates, who didn't know he had been dismissed, to get the ranks which he would sew on his uniform after removing the old rank. He added that none of his family members knew that he had been dismissed from the police force as he used to pretend as if he was still working.

"I was doing all these because it was in my blood", Adigun said.

Commenting on the case when Sunday Tribune sought confirmation on the story, the police image maker in Oyo State, ASP Femi Okanlawon, said the suspect would be charged to court after completion of investigations.

TWO brothers were reportedly shot dead by a policeman in Okitipupa area of Ondo state over N20 bribe (Egunje) at check point.

Three other persons are critically injured and are on admission at an undisclosed hospital in the town

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the deceased brothers are motorcycle riders in the ancient town.

It was gathered that the ugly incident occurred at Kajola street junction along Broad Street at about 9.15pm on Thursday.

When one of the deceased was flagged down by the policeman who was on a foot patrol demanded for a twenty naira bribe from him, the okada rider popularly known as Osare according to an eye witness told the police man that he was off duty that day and would be unable to pay the bribe.

This according to an eyewitness account provoked the policemand he immediately shot him at a close range and hit him on the chest.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the policeman who was drunk thereafter shot sporadically to scare away people while Osare was left in the pool of his blood.

News filtered to youths in the area who rushed to the scene and on arrival, the drunken policeman fled into the bush but they promptly rushed Osare to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead.

However, his younger brother called Robinson was said to have rushed to the police station to get information about the death of his brother.

Robinson was reported to have engaged the police men on duty in a hot argument and threatened to lodge complaint with the higher authorities.

But unknown to Robinson some youths had invaded the police station to demand for the killer police man.

In a bid to disperse the surging crowd one of the policemen at the station reportedly shot sporadically to scare away the irate mob but in the process Robinson was hit by a stray bullet and he died on the spot.

The death of the two brothers who hailed from Delta State caused pandemonium in the town for several hours until policemen called for reinforcement to curtail the surging crown from torching the station.

The timely intervention of the Divisional Police Officer in the area and the Jegun of Idepe-Okitipupa Oba Michael Obatuga prevented the youths from razing down the station.

Policemen in the town thereafter pulled off their uniform for fear of been lynched by the irate mob.

Contacted the Police Public Relation Officer in the state Aremu Adeniran said the police authority in the state is on top of the situation.

According to him "The situation is under control. I will give you details of the incident as soon as my office is properly briefed."

[Siasia] THE technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, is already divided as it decides on Samson Siasia's future as head coach of the Super Eagles.

''If we go by the letter of the contract, Siasia is gone,'' a member told Tribunesports yesterday.

''He was mandated to reach the semifinal of the Nations Cup and the quarterfinal of the 2014 World Cup by the terms of reference in the contract we signed with the NFF Now he could not reach the Nations Cup not to talk of getting to the semifinal. So his case is decided", he explained

"It is not in my hands now. Whatever the NFF decide, we will accept. If they want us to stay, we will carry on rebuilding this team in the right way," Siasia said.

"If they don't, we will say thank you and move on. That is the way football works."

Siasia's future hangs in the balance after the NFF issued him an administrative query in their quest for answers.

The Super Eagles gave up a late goal to draw 2-2 with Guinea on Saturday and miss out on qualification for next year's Nations Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria's coach, Samson Siasia says his team deserves all the insults thrown it way by fans after failing to qualify for next year's African Nations Cup.

Siasia said his team is more devastated than the fans by this failure.

"We failed to qualify and that hurt the fans. We are also hurt, because as much as the fans wanted to see us at the Nations Cup, it pains us more than it pains them," he said.

"We have young players who were looking forward to their first Nations Cup. We have experienced ones who wanted to return there to challenge again.

"We have found it hard to sleep because everyone is thinking about what happened."

He insisted his Eagles could take comfort from the progress that has been made in a short time.

"In the few months we have been here, the team has grown younger, we are tactically stronger, we play the ball quicker than before, we create more than seven chances in every game and we have not failed to score more than two goals, except for the friendly against Argentina," he argued.

Daniel's trial stalls, goes on hunger strike

Now, it is official: former governor of Oyo State, Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, Senate Deputy Chief Whip, who was Commissioner for Local Government under Alao-Akala, Hosea Agboola, and an engineer, Femi Babalola (a.k.a. Jogor), have a case to answer.
Before an Ibadan High Court where they were arraigned yesterday, the EFCC preferred 11 charges of gross misconduct and abuse of office against them.
Their offences ranged from conspiracy, illegal award of contracts, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal acts to concealing the ownership of such property.

And for the second day, the EFCC failed yesterday to arraign former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, in court.

The commission's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, had assured on Monday that Daniel would appear before a state High Court in Abeokuta yesterday.

Babafemi had linked the commission's inability to arraign Daniel and others on Monday to the absence of judges to handle the case. The former governor was due to be arraigned before the Federal High Court, Oke-Mosan and the state High Court, Isabo, Ogun State, based on the petitions written against him.

Just like they did on Monday, Daniel's supporters besieged the court premises as early as 7.30 a.m., but were denied access to the premises. Mobile policemen stationed at the gate of the Federal High Court searched journalists and court officials, ahead of the proceedings, which did not hold.

Later yesterday, the EFCC said it was making effort to arraign Daniel, Danjuma Goje, former governor of Gombe State, now a senator, and Aliyu Akwe-Doma, immediate past governor of Nasarawa State before the court.

Daniel's legal team however attempted to make a political capital out of his detention, as it alleged that a former president was behind his ordeal.

As at 4.00 p. m., the closing time of the court, there was no sign that the embattled former governor would still be arraigned yesterday.

However, counsel to Daniel, Yemi Oke, rued the treatment meted to his client by the EFCC.

Alao-Akala and the other accused persons, were driven into the court premises in a Coaster bus marked AJ 134 SBC Kaduna accompanied by EFCC officials at 8.15 a.m., the former governor pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Clad in white guinea brocade with black cap, Alao-Akala was calm throughout the proceedings. He took time to acknowledge cheers from his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters and loyalists who had thronged the court to show their solidarity with him.

Agboola was the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during Alao-Akala's tenure until April when he won the election into the Senate.

Babalola, who is the chairman of a notable events centre in Ibadan, Jogor and Pentagon Engineering Services, was the contractor in charge of all projects awarded by the immediate past administration.

The Alao-Akala administration had awarded contracts for the construction of a five-kilometre road in each of the 33 local councils for N250 million.

This was widely criticised by the opposition, which accused him of siphoning the state's funds through the contract.

Some aggrieved persons petitioned the EFCC, alleging financial misappropriation and recklessness.

In the charges read to the accused persons before the trial judge, Justice Moshood Abass, the trio were accused of conspiracy and award of N8.5 billion road contracts in the councils between 2007 and 2009 without provisions in the budget.

Besides, the accused persons were alleged to have awarded contracts worth N2.270 billion in 2007 for the supply of 33 drilling machines and another put at N355 million for the supply of 20 Roro trucks and 200 pieces of skip bins.

They were also alleged to have obtained by false pretence the sum of N269 million from the state and local government joint account.

Alao-Akala was also accused of buying two choice property in Ibadan with money realised from the illegal acts and two others in London using a false identity.

On his part, Babalola allegedly obtained N269 million from the state and local council joint account in addition to another N347 million from various contractors engaged in road construction in the 33 councils.

After pleading not guilty to the charges, counsel to the EFCC, Chief Godwin Obla, urged the court to remand the accused in custody to enable the commission prepare for trial.

But the accused counsel, Mamman Osuman (SAN), who led other Senior Advocates, including Bolaji Ayorinde, Nathaniel Oke and G.M.O Oguntade, told the court of his pending application for bail and sought to move it.

He said the need to urgently hear the application was predicated on the fact that the suspects, particularly Alao-Akala, had been in the EFCC custody in the past six days.

Osuman said the accused persons unnecessary and unconstitutional stay in custody of the commission was the basis of his application for bail.

But Obla objected to hearing the bail application, saying he was entitled to the constitutional provision of 48 hours to respond.

Justice Abass, who rose briefly to write his ruling, adjourned the case till noon today for hearing of the bail application.

Abass said since the accused persons responded to the prosecution's application filed within 24 hours, their bail application must also be heard within a reasonable time.

He fixed hearing for today and directed that the accused persons be remanded in custody of the State Security Service (SSS) but must be given access to their counsel and four other lawyers, doctors and one spouse each.

In a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Oke alleged that Daniel is held under inhuman conditions and subjected to gruesome interrogations.

"As it is generally known, he was taken into custody on Thursday, October 6, 2011 by EFCC officials. Since then under the guise of investigating allegations contained in petitions written against him, the former governor has been detained at the EFCC facility in Abuja under unbearable conditions.

"In the last four days, he has been subjected to gruesome interrogations by operatives of the commission. Under normal circumstances, Daniel should have been arraigned in court since he has spent more than the required period specified by law in detention. But at the time of issuing this statement, he has not been arraigned in court and no charge has been preferred against him," he said.

The counsel stressed that despite this, Daniel is being detained and his fundamental human rights curtailed for no just cause. He added that only his wife is allowed access to him.

He said yesterday morning, the EFCC was served with court processes by Daniel's lawyers led by Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN) and Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) seeking to enforce his fundamental human rights.
