PoliticsNew Despotic DSS Bars Journalists From Covering News-sahara reporters by calid16(op): 2:52pm On Mar 18, 2016
Some reporters assigned to cover the Department of State Service (DSS) were on Thursday shocked when they were denied access into the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. As a result, the journalists could not cover a press briefing scheduled for 4 p.m. where the agency presented detained Ekiti State lawmaker, Afolabi Akanni, who was rumored to have died while in DSS detention.

Several of the reporters barred from covering the briefing accused the DSS of attempting to silence and gag the media.

According to the disaffected reporters, DSS operatives at the main entrance had a list of certain media groups, adding that only reporters from those media on the list were allowed to enter for the press briefing while other reporters were sent away.

“When some of us who were denied access asked the reason behind our exclusion, the [DSS] operatives at the main gate informed us that they were carrying out the instruction given to them from above,” said one of the reporters. Another affected journalist told our correspondent that there was no official reason given for excluding them from doing their professional job.

“I have been covering the SSS for almost ten years now for my [news] organization, only to be screened out today and nobody could tell us anything,” said yet another excluded reporter. He added: “I wonder what criteria they used to choose those who were allowed to go in. We are going to resist this draconian action, targeted at suppressing the media. There are no fake journalists among all of us covering this beat, so I can't just understand what is going on.”

The reporters stated that they were also frustrated that the DSS had not been able to put together a formidable and effective media team to provide information to the media and public on the agency’s activities. One of them decried a new culture of extreme secrecy within the DSS, accusing the agency of disregarding the citizens’ right to know.

Some of the reporters told our correspondent that the agency’s latest action against some news media could be perceived as evidence of high handedness by the DSS. Journalists from print and electronic media were among those blocked from covering the DSS briefing.

One of the reporters asserted that the DSS action contravened the obligation of the mass media to perform its statutory role of upholding, including upholding the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.

Since coming on board as the Director of the DSS, Lawal Daura has refused to appoint an official spokesperson for the agency.

I'll call him general cos, true to his calling, he really is behaving like a Nigerian "general":

1. Seized the press pass of a foreign media channel for doing what is not put of the ordinary anywhere.

2. Returns the press pass amid fan fare, are you kidding me ?

3. Appoints ... wait wait wait, he still has no cabinet. WTF ?

4. Appoints a baboon as Aide de Camp(he's also press secretary) who has revealed all your security strategy to the world. It's obvious now the presidential house security set up is now in disarray.

5. Told the world you're incapapble of ruling Nigeria with, "at 72 years of age, there's only so much you can expect me to do" . WTF mannnnnn

During the dinner, volatile political issues including demonstrations in Busan and the opposition leader Kim Young Sam were discussed with President Park and Chief Bodyguard Cha taking a hardline and Director Kim calling for moderate measures while Chief Secretary Kim was trying to steer the topic of discussion to small talk. President Park rebuked Director Kim for not being repressive enough in dealing with protesters and Kim Young Sam, whom Park said should be arrested. Each time discussion drifted to other subjects, Chief Bodyguard Cha continued to bring up the inability of KCIA to end the crisis and suggested that demonstrators and opposition lawmakers should be "mowed down with tanks." The rebukes from President Park and especially Cha riled up Director Kim. Director Kim left the dining room to convene with his closest subordinates - former Marine colonel and KCIA Chief Agent Park Seon-ho and Army colonel and Director Kim's secretary Park Heung-ju (no relations) - and said to them: "Chief of Staff and Deputy Director are here as well. Today is the day." Asked if President Park is included as a target, Kim said yes.[4]

Kim reentered the meeting room with a semi-automatic pistol Walther PPK, shot Chief Bodyguard Cha in the arm and then President Park in the left chest. He attempted to fire again on Cha, but the gun jammed. Cha fled to a bathroom adjacent to the dining room. Kim came back with his subordinate's gun and again shot at Cha in the abdomen and Park, who was dead by then, in the head. Upon hearing the initial shots, Park Seon-ho held two bodyguards in the waiting room at gunpoint and ordered them to put hands up in hope of preventing further bloodshed especially since he was a friend with one of the bodyguards. When the other bodyguard attempted to reach for a gun, Park shot them both to death. At the same time, Colonel Park Heung-ju and two other KCIA agents stormed the kitchen and killed the remaining bodyguards. President Park, Chief Bodyguard Cha, three presidential bodyguards, and a presidential chauffeur died in the end.[5]
