- Across the world, homes are submerged, roads disappear underwater, families flee for their lives, and communities are destroyed. In Vietnam, recent rainfall exceeded 800 mm in just three days, leaving streets underwater and triggering landslide warnings. Globally, people are dying in their thousands from climate related events.

- Now imagine a poor Nigerian mother with a newborn in a flooded house, her pit toilet overflowing into contaminated floodwater. Where does she take her baby? How does she protect that child?

- Those without children are desperately trying to bring babies into a world facing increasingly dangerous environmental disasters. Have we seriously considered the world these children will inherit?

- I mentioned prayer in my previous post because I fear it may already be too late to prevent some of the damage humanity will face. Should we knowingly bring children into this growing crisis without thinking deeply about their future?

- My people, I am saying this because you are my people. Please stop being disconnected from global affairs. Wake up and pay attention. The world is changing, and we cannot continue living as though nothing is happening.

- My fellow Nigerians, I am saying this because you are my people.

- I am deeply concerned that many of us are continuing to live as though the world is exactly as it was 20, 30 or 40 years ago.

- It is not.

- The climate is changing. Extreme weather is becoming a much more serious threat in many parts of the world, and communities are increasingly being forced to confront floods, extreme heat, storms, droughts and other climate-related hazards.

- Please, Nigerians, stop being so closed off from what is happening around the world.

- What happens in Nepal matters to us.

- What happens in Thailand matters to us.

- What happens in Port Harcourt matters to us.

- These are not simply stories to watch on social media and scroll past.

🌊 LOOK AT NEPAL.

- In August 2026, catastrophic flash flooding swept through northern Nepal.

- More than 1,400 people have been reported dead, with thousands still unaccounted for in the aftermath. The disaster destroyed homes and critical infrastructure and left communities displaced.

- Scientists and disaster experts are increasingly concerned about how a warming climate can intensify risks associated with melting glaciers and unstable glacial lakes.

- Nepal has now announced plans to drain several dangerous glacial lakes and install flood-monitoring and early-warning systems.

- Think about that.

- A country can be dealing with catastrophic flooding associated with a rapidly changing mountain environment while people thousands of kilometres away are carrying on with ordinary life.

- We cannot afford that kind of disconnection.

🌊 LOOK AT THAILAND.

- Thailand has also been dealing with severe flooding.

- Recent flooding has affected more than 3.5 million people, with deaths reported and extensive disruption across the country. Bangkok itself has experienced widespread inundation.

- And Thailand is already being warned to prepare for another period of heavy to very heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.

- This is not something we should look at and say, "That is Thailand. It has nothing to do with us."

- It has everything to do with us.

- Climate systems are global.

- Weather patterns are interconnected.

- Environmental problems do not respect national borders.

🌊 NOW LOOK AT PORT HARCOURT.

- Recent flooding in parts of Port Harcourt and Rivers State has already prompted government intervention and relief efforts for affected residents.

- And this is where I want Nigerians to stop and think deeply.

- If severe flooding can affect neighbourhoods containing large houses and expensive properties, what happens to Nigerians living in extremely vulnerable conditions?

- What happens to the person living in a poorly constructed house?

- What happens to the family living in a thatched house?

- What happens to people who have no proper drainage?

- What happens to families whose only sanitation facility is a pit toilet?

🚨 IMAGINE THIS.

- Imagine a Nigerian mother who has just given birth.

- She has a newborn baby.

- She lives in a modest house with a pit toilet.

- Then torrential rain comes.

- The water keeps rising.

- Four feet.

- Five feet.

- Six feet.

- The pit toilet is flooded.

- Human waste can mix with floodwater, creating a serious sanitation and disease risk.

- Her home is surrounded by contaminated water.

- She has a newborn baby in her arms.

- She may have nowhere safe to go.

- She may not have a car.

- She may not have money for temporary accommodation.

- She may not know where the next meal or clean water will come from.

- What does that mother do?

- What happens to that newborn?

- These are the questions we need to start asking when we talk about the future of Nigeria.

🙏🏾 NIGERIANS, LET US CHANGE SOME OF OUR PRAYERS.

- We are a deeply prayerful people.

- We pray for marriage.

- We pray for prosperity.

- We pray for success.

- We pray for long life.

- We pray for children.

- We pray for God to bless us with more babies.

- But how often are we praying about the condition of the Earth itself?

- How often are we saying:

- "God, have mercy on the Earth."
- "God, help humanity reverse climate change."
- "God, restore the balance of nature."
- "God, protect our communities from catastrophic floods and extreme weather."
- "God, give our leaders wisdom to prepare for what is coming."
- "God, make this planet habitable and safe for our children and grandchildren."

- I am asking Nigerians to begin praying these prayers too.

- If we are going to ask God for more children, let us also ask God for a world in which those children can actually live safely.

- Let us not only pray for the number of children we will have.

- Let us pray about the world those children will inherit.

👶🏾 WHAT KIND OF WORLD ARE WE BRINGING CHILDREN INTO?

- This is not an argument against children.

- Children are precious.

- Family is precious.

- Life is precious.

- But parenthood comes with responsibility.

- We have to ask ourselves:

- Where will our children live?
- Will they have safe housing?
- Will they have clean water?
- Will they have food security?
- Will they be protected from extreme weather?
- Will our cities have adequate drainage?
- Will vulnerable families have somewhere to evacuate?
- Will our healthcare systems cope with increasing environmental pressures?

- We cannot simply say, "God will provide," while refusing to look at the realities developing around us.

- Faith and preparation should go together.

⚠️ PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS: THIS MAY ONLY BE THE BEGINNING.

- I am not saying that every flood or disaster is caused by climate change.

- But I am saying that we should take the changing climate and increasing climate risks extremely seriously.

- We should not wait until a disaster reaches our own doorstep before we become interested.

- We should not wait until our own homes are underwater.

- We should not wait until a newborn baby is trapped in a flooded house.

- We should not wait until a community's pit toilets are overflowing into floodwater.

- We should prepare before disaster comes.

🇳🇬 NIGERIANS, PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES.

- Follow international news.

- Learn what is happening in other countries.

- Learn about climate science.

- Pay attention to extreme-weather warnings.

- Learn about flood-risk areas.

- Demand better drainage and urban planning.

- Demand proper waste management.

- Demand resilient infrastructure.

- Protect wetlands and waterways.

- Stop treating environmental degradation as somebody else's problem.

- Teach your children about climate change.

- Talk about climate change in our churches and mosques.

- Let our community leaders discuss disaster preparedness.

- Let our politicians understand that climate resilience is not a luxury.

🙏🏾 AND ABOVE ALL, LET US PRAY.

- Let us pray for mercy.

- Let us pray for wisdom.

- Let us pray for scientists and environmental experts.

- Let us pray for our leaders.

- Let us pray for vulnerable families.

- Let us pray for mothers and newborns.

- Let us pray for the restoration of our ecosystems.

- Let us pray that humanity will find ways to slow, stop and, where possible, reverse the damage we are causing to the climate.

- But let our prayers also produce action.

❤️ I AM SAYING THIS BECAUSE NIGERIANS ARE MY PEOPLE.

- I do not want us to wake up one day and realise that we should have been paying attention years earlier.

- I do not want our children to inherit problems we refused to acknowledge.

- I do not want a mother with a newborn baby standing in a flooded home wondering where she will take her child.

- I do not want poor Nigerians, who have contributed the least to global emissions, to suffer disproportionately because they lack the resources to escape environmental disasters.

- Please, my people, wake up.

- The world is changing.

- Our awareness must change too.

- Let us stop living as though tomorrow is guaranteed to look like yesterday.

- Let us stop being disconnected from global events.

- Let us stop treating climate change as a Western problem or somebody else's problem.

- It is a human problem. It is an African problem. It is a Nigerian problem.

- Before we pray only for more children, let us pray for the Earth that those children will inherit.

- Before we ask God to multiply our families, let us ask God to preserve the habitability of the planet.

- Before we celebrate population growth, let us think about whether our environment, infrastructure and resources can sustain the lives we are bringing into the world.
