Pets / 8 Most Aggressive Dogs To Own In Nigeria by CanineInvestor(m): 6:39pm On Nov 07, 2017
Rottweiler
Only the breed name Rottweiler or “Rott” for short sends shivers to anyone that knows this breed in Nigerian. Originating from Germany they have a characteristic black & tan color, well built with large paws and big jaw. Stories fly around about encounters with this deadly breed especially of its aggressiveness. It might surprise you to know that many owners of this breed can’t get close to them while in some cases only the owners can handle them. This breed gets more aggressive as they grow older. They may not be a good choice for a family with children.

Pit bull
Of all breeds this breed is feared due to their strong jaw. Usually come in white color mixed brown and sometimes black. Many countries have banned this breed due to many cases of merciless bite wounds shared among victims. Pit bulls can be very gentle but when feeling threatened can be deadly. Nigerians that own this breed usually acquire them due to this attribute. I have seen cases where this breed killed all the other dog breeds in the house and the owner got confused about continued ownership.

Bull mastiff
Very muscular and well built dog breed. They come in tan color with black trim at the muzzle sometimes brindle color all through. Their wide jaw can be compared with that of a Rottweiler but slightly bigger or shaped differently. You have to acquire muscles to be able to handle a bullmastiff during evening walks. Choke chains might be your savior if you lack the much needed strength to handle a fully grown bull mastiff. Bull mastiffs can be timid at times but when aggressive can be very deadly.

Caucasian
Talk of the very hairy massive dog. Caucasian dog is the reigning dog breed in Nigerian presently because they are considered to be friendly with children and their owners and will not tolerate strangers. Caucasians will keep barking and struggle to be let out to devour the stranger. A closer watch is needed for this dog because when they stand on their hind limbs they can be taller than an average human height and equally weigh high. Nigerians still crop the ears of their Caucasians for aesthetic reasons.

German shepherd
Alsatian as its often called in Nigeria is the most popular dog in Nigeria. In fact this name is used to identify exotic or foreign dogs by most Nigerians living in the rural areas. One characteristic of this breed is the noise maker personality. They often chase invaders away with their voice barking as a warning. Well trained German shepherds can be a family member owing to their loyal and obedient nature. Good with kids. Aggressive ones however can do damages the owners won’t believe.

Neopolitan Mastiff
Always drooling saliva due to their mouth conformation. This breed is among the ugliest dogs in the world with an “Old-man” face. They can weigh as much as 60kg, very gentle to their owners but unpredictable when they see strangers.

Great Dane
Great Dane is the tallest & maybe the biggest dog the world over. Few Nigerians own this breed due to its unpopular nature. A full grown Great Dane can be almost twice taller than an average human being standing on their hind limbs. Like the Neapolitan mastiff they can be very gentle with the owner or handler but unpredictable when confronted by a stranger.

Boer boel
This South African breed of dog recently gained acceptance in Nigeria which I believe it’s due to its close resemblance to the bull mastiff. Mostly appear in tan color and sometimes brindle color. Boer boels are known to be aggressive as they get older but very playful as puppies. Some owners of this breed had to put down their dog (euthanize) due to a progressive increase in aggressiveness even to the owner especially when socialization was little at puppy stage. Walking this dog can be a challenge owing to their excessive energy.

Don't be scared. Proper socialization is the key to preventing deadly aggression in the rott. Introduce her to family members and let the dog feel loved. Although be careful not to "spoil" your dog while trying to "socialize"

Pets / Dog Breeds And Their Price Range In Nigeria by CanineInvestor(m): 7:37pm On Nov 06, 2017
People keep coming to me to ask these questions; what is the price range of the most popular dog breeds in Nigeria? Which dog breed is the cheapest or most affordable to keep it rather mildly? And it takes a lot to explain these price variations because various factors like degree of “pureness”, popularity of the breed, availability of the breed, size of the puppy (Caucasians, Rottweiler & Mastiffs), color of the puppy (Lhasa Apso) all determine the price of the puppy or dog.
Most affordable dogs
Local dog – Most beginners with dogs in Nigeria start with the local dogs before they start to become aware of the foreign breeds because these dogs are extremely cheap and can be bought as low as #2000 to #5000. They are rather more expensive for people living inside the city of Abuja because they are almost nonexistent and the sourcing fee for this breed might raise the price.
Local dog crossed with German Shepherd dog– the most common name given to this breed in Nigeria is Alsatian Dog or Police dog. Most of the available Alsatians in Nigeria are genetically diluted that they come in various shapes and sizes but most still retain the snout and the black vest back coat color of the Alsatian dog. Please note that the name Alsatian is an alternative to German Shepherd dog coined by Americans. These categories of dogs go for as low as #20,000 to #50,000 . Most vendors or sellers might use the phrase “slant” or “slant back” to make it sound like its pure but in most cases they are not. I like to call this category of dog “Regular German Shepherd Dog” because they are the most readily seen.
Fairly affordable dogs
Toy dogs – these are the Samoyed , Lhasa Apso , Japanese spitz these dogs have a price range of #45,000 - #90,000 . These prices largely depend on demand and supply. There are seasons where these dogs are all over the place that people seem not to be buying them. During these period the prices tend to drop to as low as #30,000 . Do not forget that when you need to sell to a reseller you will have to sell lower than the going price.
Caucasian dog – This very hairy wolf-like dog is the third most popular dog in Nigeria after German Shepherd dog and Rottweiler. Their popularity might be traced to the information that they are good with children and very good as security dogs. I might agree with this believe from experience. Another reason is the fur and the massive looks of the dog. It’s rather unfortunate that many of them are genetically diluted but still retain the characteristic grey color coat. The mixed ones are easily spotted through their facial looks and some by their color. Some vendors like to show you a color marking that might appear on their legs and may call it “socks”, they might further tell you that it means that the puppy is pure. Please disregard this insinuation because it can also appear on the mixed ones. The price range of this breed is #50,000 - #150,000 .
Rottweiler – This breed is fairly affordable due to level of “pureness”. Most sellers in Nigeria categorize them as “ long mouth ”, “ short mouth ”, “ Boxed head ”, “ bowed legged” etc. These distinctions determine the prices of these dogs or puppies. Of all mentioned above the cheapest is the “long mouth” which might go for #40,000 to #55,000 . The rest range from #75,000 - #180,000 depending on the combination of these physical features. Please disregard some misleading statement like “German Rott” or “American Rott” because many desperate sellers use this to mislead buyers to get more from them. There is nothing like those – if it’s not Rottweiler according to the breed standard by American Kennel Club, it’s not Rottweiler so do not listen to those statements.
Bull Mastiff – This breed is not as sort for as the aforementioned breeds but very valuable by those that love this breed. The price range of this dog is fairly stable between #75,000 and #150,000 . Anything looking different from the muscular Bull mastiff might be sold between #30,000 and #60,000 .
Less affordable dogs
Mastiffs as Neopolitan Mastiff , Cane Corso , Bull dog , Pugs , Great Dane , St. Bernard, these are relatively rare dogs in Nigeria. These dogs are mostly owned by very experienced dog owners and lovers of ugly dogs. Most Nigerian breeders of this dog usually mix them especially the Cane Corso and Neapolitan Mastiff. The only way to recognize this mixture is the disappearance of the folds of the Neapolitan Mastiff. The Cane Corso does not come with folds so if it’s present it means the dog may not be complete Cane Corso. The Bull Dog and Pugs do not usually come in diluted genes. These dogs range from #120,000 - #350,000 .
Unaffordable
Tibetan Mastiff – this dog is as expensive as #1,000,000 and above if you can find the puppy. It is currently the most expensive dog in the world. The Chinese people are the main breeders of this dog worldwide.
Pedigree dogs
This cuts across the entire breeds and mostly bred from imported parents and they mostly go from #120,000 to #350,000 . These dogs have history from their parents and great grandparents. These types of puppies or dogs are bred by very serious breeders in Nigeria and they mostly own only one breed of dog. You must be a serious buyer to approach these guys because they have integrity regarding the business. And the more their dogs grow the more expensive it becomes unlike the others that might lose value as they grow.
Disclaimer
I am just writing this based on my personal interactions with dog sellers and my experience as a dog seller. Please these prices are not the standard prices in Nigeria. I am only giving out prices based on my personal experience to help guide you on buying or selling. Do not forget that demand and supply can affect prices. These prices DO NOT INCLUDE price of IMPORTED DOGS and PUPPIES.

Pets / How To Get The Best From Your Security Dog by CanineInvestor(m): 7:18pm On Nov 06, 2017
One complain I often get is the problem of non-performing dogs and sometimes puppies that refuse to bark at strangers and playful to everyone. One of our clients bought a Boerboel puppy and at the age of 6 months the puppy was expected to be performing as a full security dog. I got several complains from the client that the dog was always playing with the renovation workers and that he refuse to bark at then or even try to bite any of them. I tried to tell him that the dog at 6 months is too young to function as a full security dog. He agreed with me relying on his Rottweiler dog that was already performing well as a security. The only problem the Rott had was the fact that it was only the owner that can handle or even hold the dog.
The Rott later passed on and the young Boerboel was left. The invaders saw an opportunity to break into the man's house. The Boerboel was busy playing the invaders while they look for ways to break into the man's home. It was in the early morning around 1am and luckily for the man he was able to inform his friends on phone who helped to contact the patrol police that saved the family from the invaders that were already breaking the bullet proof door from the concrete part. The invaders ran away via the fence.
The man quickly called me the next morning to come and remove the dog from his house in anger but I tried to make him change his mind because the dog did not have the necessary training like his dead Rott. He insisted and gave the puppy away to a dog trainer.
A second contrasting story is that of a client of ours that lived in an estate rounded by a slum. The history of this estate is that while people are gone to work the criminals that live in those slums enter through a giant drainage meant for a river that was there before the estate was developed. These criminals tend to time these people and invade their homes to take away their belongings. This our client had an experience with these criminals and decided to buy dogs.
His first dog, Bull a bullmastiff grew to a very docile dog that hardly barked. Someone told him about Caucasian breeds so he went in search of it and got one that has some German shepherd in her Tish. Tish has the attitude of refusing strangers entrance into the house. The man loved the dog despite the fact that the dog was not a pure breed as long as she was performing the function.
One faithful day, the criminals came again and were resisted by Tish and Bull Bull performs better with Tish around. The criminal now decided to use the neighbor's ceiling to gain assess to the man's house. The building was a semi-detached bungalow with connected roof. The neighbor didn't have dogs so it was easy for the criminals.
Unfortunately for the guy that was already inside the ceiling trying to gain access to the man's house the neighbor came back and his friends ran off. The dogs kept barking on top of their voices staring at the roof. The neighbor always perceived the dogs to be noise makers so he ignored them but when he got to his entrance door lo and behold his door has been forced open so he ran to pick a stick and called the estate security. They search the house and found nothing and left.
The dogs kept barking at the roof but nobody tried to look at the dog on the other side of the fence because of the demarcation.
The man came back with his son from school and saw his dogs barking at the roof. He was then distracted by the neighbor who was narrating his story. He held his son tightly while he listened to the stories but away from his own house. When he eventually got into his house his dogs almost entered with him which was quite unusual.
Let me cut this story short. The criminal now tried to quickly run out of his front door now it was open, bumped into the dogs who pounced on him. The sound was like the dogs were fighting so the man ran out to separate them and met them holding the criminal down. The criminal was eventually caught and taken to the police. Tish was not trained formally.
Long after I heard this last story I tried to understand the secret behind that apprehension. What did the guy do to his dogs? Of course he gives me information of how he keeps his dogs so I tried to piece his style of keeping dogs and some other personal experience which I want to share here.
Getting the best from your security dog is very simple but ignored or misunderstood by many. Here are my own tips:
Make sure your dog is healthy: A sick dog will rather hide in pains than stand up to strangers.
Allow your dog to bark at people: It gives the dog confidence to do it again especially when it is very important. Barking will help to deter intruders who know that they have a dog or dogs to contend with.
Allow your dogs to know their environment: Dogs need to know the extent of where they live in order to protect it as their own territory. If they are often confined to a small space in the environment it sends a wrong signal to them.
Don't over feed your dogs: Most Nigerians I know tends to feed their dogs in the night or late evening. Dogs tend to get lazy after feeding heavily and will want to rest thereby affecting their performance at protecting the house.
Caging your dogs often may make them try to protect the cage rather than the house or home. Some dogs are mostly caged for more than 12hrs making them protect the cage rather than the house. These dogs will get very aggressive while within the cage but very less functional outside the cage.
Always try to find out why your dog barks: Whenever your dog barks they are actually calling your attention to something and your presence will reinforce their confidence to do it again especially when it matters.
Nurture the pack leader: if you own more than one dog, one of them eventually becomes dominant to the rest. It doesn't matter if the dog is male or female. This dog is usually the first to bark or attack while the rest follow. This dog is referred to as the pack leader and you really need to identify and nurture him or her well because their actions are what the rest of the dogs emulates or acts on.
Avoid buying adult dogs that were not pack leaders: if you get a dog that was not a pack leader where he or she was coming from, the performance of the dog as a security dog might not be impressive. Some dogs tend to pick up after a brief training, working with other dogs but not in all cases.
Buy dogs that will display security attributes: there are dogs that are security dogs by nature and will surely display such attributes in most cases with very few exceptions. Breeds like German shepherds and Caucasians are very good security dogs and are most likely going to perform as expected.
In conclusion, you can see that getting the best from your security dog largely depends on your choice of dog and so many other behavioral reinforcements instilled in the dog by the owner or handler. I believe there are other ways to enhance the security performance of dogs as long as the dog understands the intention of the owner and is able to perform accordingly. Thank

Pets / Thinking Like A Business Man Or Woman Breeding Dogs by CanineInvestor(m): 1:22am On Oct 29, 2017
Dog breeding is one of the most difficult businesses to venture into and yet when handled with business sense it can be very rewarding. Breeding dogs is not just having puppies from your dogs but having puppies with a ready targeted market waiting to clear your stock. Becoming a breeder is a decision many individuals make without using business sense and consequently lose money without even knowing where they lost the money from.

There is no difference between doing business as a superstore and running a dog kennel as a breeder, I’m sure this will shock some of you reading this article. Let me tell you the similarities: Running a superstore you keep records of everything for example the products records, employee records, electricity bills, rent invoices, sales records, purchases records, employee salaries payments records etc. the difference in trend is that most dog breeders hardly keep any records for future reference.

Things like dog food purchase records, date of first heat of a bitch, date of birth of puppies, record of number of puppies littered, records of veterinary care given, records of the amount each puppy was sold etc. In fact in Nigeria this is a big problem of breeders.

Running the kennel as a breeder with these records doesn’t put money in your pocket as a breeder but gives you progress report on the business of breeding dogs. The problem I see most times is where so many breeders refuse to keep records because their stock is few. This important stage is where most breeders get it wrong because this is actually the starting point. There are things you can remember, like the number of bitch you have –of course you know them by name so you don’t bother – but as a business man or woman keeping records can help you show others where you started, where you are and where you are headed.

Another problem with dog breeders is breeding the wrong dog. I want to consider a breeder as a business man not a hubby breeder so he should know if his stock is a highly desired breed. Some breeders just breed a dog because he or she loves the dog breed personally without considering the market of the breed. The first thing that should be in the mind of the breeder is how to breed dogs whose puppies will not last longer than 6 weeks with them. People tend to learn this after breeding for years and some people specifically decide to become a pioneer breeder of that particular rare breed and reap well some years from when they started.

Feeding dogs can be very expensive that many breeders try to find cheaper sources of nutritious meals for their dogs. Sometimes they decide to make their own food and serve and other times formulate food for their dogs. Some breeders would book some restaurants to keep food remnants for their dogs and sometimes they buy these food remnant from such restaurants. There are costs associated with these activities which these breeders refuse to put to account thereby making their imagined records incomplete.

You have to realize that making profit from running your kennel or losing money is simply part of business. The loss will help you to re-strategize by going back to your books and/or inquiring from other breeders some facts to determine why you lost. This activity will go a long way to help you do better the next time.

One thing that breeders refuse to understand a times is the fact that you may have to give out some dogs or puppies in other to save cost. Superstores run promos not because they are happy giving out products at cheaper price but because some of those product have remained on the shelves unsold for too long and have almost eating their profit from “warehousing”. There is a warehousing cost associated with any product you see on the shelf of any superstore. Let me compare it with a puppy who should have been sold when he was 6 weeks but because buyers are not coming he stayed another two months and when you run the calculation you see that you can’t sell that puppy above a certain price and keeping the puppy costs you each meal that he eats – i.e eating his profit already. The best option is to apply the “warehousing cost” concept and sell it with heavy discount or give him out completely if that is the most cost effective way.

Sometimes you can have accidental breeding of two different breeds of which selling the puppies will be very difficult except you want to compromise your integrity and lying to people that they are a pure breed –this will ruin your business in the long run – but selling at a very attractive price will help you dispose faster and save you a lot of cost. Of course you might make profit from them and that is cool also.

Sourcing puppies for people from other breeders can also help your business earn extra income. As a known breeder your reputation will make people gravitate to you for advice on where and how to get good puppies and many of these people will want you to source puppies for them so that you can get the best puppies for them. You source from other breeders and bill the clients for the cost of sourcing and make extra income for your kennel. Some people source puppies as a business but I believe people will trust breeders better.

You can also board other people’s dogs while they travel as a means for extra income because people will trust you to manage their dogs properly while they travel for holidays when they cannot take the dogs along. Like I have mentioned before boarding of dogs is a business on its own and can make you extra income.

Thinking like a business man or woman breeding dogs will help you keep good records and harness some of these extra sources of income to manage and fund your own dog breeding business to make the money you really deserve breeding dogs. Thank You!
