Given the unfolding events in our country I believe that this is the time for deep introspection and sobre reflection. I am not a member of IPOB, I have never attended any IPOB meeting and neither am I Igbo. I am however deeply concerned about what is going on in our country, what the Igbos are being subjected to and what I consider to be the greatest assault on the human rights and civil liberties of the Nigerian people since the military left power in 1999. A violation of the constitutional right of freedom of association and freedom of speech affects not just those that have been targetted but each and every one of us. An act of injustice against one is an act of injustice against all. What affects the part also affects the whole. If you beat my neighbours child it is as good as beating mine and consequently I have a duty to defend that child. That is the essence of humanity and chivalry: to speak up for those that are being persecuted, to defend the defenceless, to fight for those that are too weak to fight for themselves and to be the voice of the voiceless. We must cultivate the discipline and courage to defend the right of others to be different and to think differently from us and to express contrary views. We may not all agree with the style, language and objectives of IPOB but we surely have a duty before God and the law to defend, uphold and affirm their right to express themselves in any way that they deem fit providing they do not threaten or hurt others whilst doing so. This is the very essence, foundation and indeed cornerstone of freedom and democracy and if we allow the government to take that away from us and to get away with what they are doing without a stiff challenge we are finished as a people. It is IPOB today but tomorrow it could be OPC, Ijaw Youth Council, Ohaneze, Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Arewa Youths, Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum or indeed anyone else. I have never heard of a “terrorist” organisation that has not killed or threatened to kill anyone and that has totally rejected the idea of violence and an armed struggle. I have never heard of a “terrorist” organisation whose only aspiration is to have a referendum to determine whether or not their people should or should not remain in Nigeria. I have never heard of a “terrorist” organisation whose only objective is the peaceful and lawful exercise of the right of self-determination. I have never heard of a “terrorist” organisation whose only crime is to take objection to the stripping away of their historical and cultural identity and to speak out against the willful marginalisation and mass murder of their people. I have never heard of a “terrorist” organisation who believe in passive and non-violent resistance and who consistently emphasise the importance of peaceful opposition. Saying that IPOB is a terrorist organisation is like saying that Mother Theresa is the Marquis De Sade. It is like saying that an angel from heaven is a demon from hell. It is like saying that Little Red Riding Hood is the hungry and ravenous wolf. It is like saying that Snowhite is Jack the Ripper. It is like saying that Florence Nightingale is Aleister Crowley. It is like saying that the Apostle Paul is Anton La Vey. It is like saying that John the Baptist is Atilla the Hun. It is like saying that Desmond Tutu is Ghengis Khan. It is like saying that John Knox is Adolf Hitler. It is like saying that Martin Luther King is Osama Bin Ladin. It is like saying that Nelson Mandela is Ali Al Baghdadi. It is like saying that Mahatma Ghandi is Abubakar Shekau. It is like saying that Amnesty International are the Fulani Herdsmen. It is like saying that Medecine Sans Frontier is Boko Haram. It is like saying that Human Rights Watch is ISIS. It is like saying that the white dove of love and peace is the savage, cruel, blood-crazed and cadavar-eating vulture from the seventh circle of hell. It is like saying that ice is fire. It is like saying that a believer is an infidel. It is like saying that a peaceful preacher is a violent blasphemer. Such a designation and categorisation is unhelpful, inappropiate and unfair. It is a damning and specious lie that has been put out by a Federal Government that is paranoid, weak, bereft of ideas and scared of it’s own shadow. It is a desperate attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it. It is childish nonsense and it does not make sense. Finally came the most absurd allegation of all: that IPOB is being funded by “treasury looters”, “disgruntled” and “destabilising” elements “in the opposition” and by France. Some assertions are so insane and asinine that they ought not to be dignified with a response and this is one of them. I urge IPOB to go to court and have the order that has designated them as a terrorist organisation set aside. I also urge President Muhammadu Buhari and his Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to remember that when they exercised their right of freedom of speech three years ago and openly defended Boko Haram by saying respectively that “an attack on Boko Haram is an attack on the north” and that it was “unconstitutional” and “unlawful” to ban them no-one threatened them with arrest because the government of that day had the prescence of mind to recognise the fact that the right to express one’s opinion, no matter how reprehensible that opinion may be, is enshrined in the constitution. The Federal Government should take a queue from that and stop trying to manufacture a crisis where there is none or kill a fly with a sledgehammer. They should also consider declaring the Fulani militants and herdsmen, who have been described by the International Terror Index as the “fourth most deadly terrorist organisation in the world” and who have killed more innocent Nigerians than any other terrorist organisation in the last two years, as the malevolent, vicious, murderous and bona fide cowards and terrorists that they are. http://www.femifanikayode.org/3180-2/ |
An Ifa priest, Yemi Elebuibon, has declared that any man who sleeps with the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Zaynab Otiti-Obanor, faces death. The Ifa devotee also noted that the former queen must undergo some cleansing rituals with any man before they can become intimate. In addition, he said the cleansing process is necessary to enable the Olori to regain a normal life. Mr. Elebuibon, who is also an actor, declared the consequence of a queen separating from a king in an interview with The Sun. The former Ife queen popularly called Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi reverted to her maiden name in August after confirming that her marriage to the Ooni has broken down irretrievably. While noting that Ooni would not be the first Yoruba Oba to be separated from his wife, Mr. Elebuibon said that marriage breakup is not very common among Yoruba Obas. He said, “The wife of the Oba will be asked to consult Ifa and Ifa will give directions on how she will make the necessary atonement for her cleansing. In Yoruba tradition, a woman who has been married to a king cannot lay with any other man even if the marriage breaks up. But when the right atonements have been made, there won’t be any problem.” On the kind of problems which an Oba’s ex-wife might encounter if she refuses to undergo the traditional cleansing rites, Mr. Elebuibon said: “For the woman, she might not really have a problem but for any man who sleeps with a queen or marries an ex-queen without the appropriate cleansing, the man may die prematurely, he may be struck with sickness or there might be retrogression in his life.” He explained that if an ex-queen wants to remarry, she would have to do the cleansing with her new husband. ”Both of them have to take part in the atonement procedures so that they won’t have any future problem. Any marriage she would be going into must not be elaborate. They should go far away and avoid any flamboyant wedding,” Elebuibon warned. The Ooni got married to his now estranged Edo bride at an elaborate traditional marriage which held in Benin, the Edo State capital on March 16, 2016. Wuraola, who is in her mid-30s, is from the Igun N’ Eromwon, a Benin bronze casters family. The weeks of rumours and denials on the crash of the royal union between the revered monarch, and his beautiful wife, were put to rest on August 30, 2017 when the latter declared she was out of the marriage on Instagram. The Ooni in a recent media statement said he would comment on the break-up at the appropriate time. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/sleep-with-ooni-s-ex-queen-die-prematurely-ifa-priest-warned.html |
A group, Concerned Southern Kaduna APC Youth, has apologised to their members and people in the area over the role it played in ensuring that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was elected as governor of Kaduna State. The group said it never expected the kind of treatment meted to their communities, religious and traditional rulers in view of their bargain prior to the election. In a statement issued by the chairman of the group, Hon Victor Asat, the group said that never in the history of its existence had they had it this bad. “The insensitive way the governor managed the crisis of our region is audible to the deaf and visible to the blind. “We didn’t bargain the endless closure of our tertiary institutions and the balkanisation of micro businesses around the affected schools environment, until El-Rufai came. “We are terribly saddened that we used our thumbs to vote for this government that has taken the path of delaying the destinies of our younger ones. Princes and princesses are in regions, delaying the destiny of men, as it was with Daniel and the Prince of Persia in the Bible, persistence made it possible for him to get answer to his prayers, our younger ones should persevere as the El-Rufai they see today, tomorrow he won’t be governor. “To our dethroned village and district heads, kindly find a place in your hearts to forgive us. If we were God, we would have aborted this disaster. As humans, we lack the third eye to see tomorrow. “We pray for a responsive government that will come and restore you to your respective thrones to continue with the fatherly and stabilising role you have been playing in our communities. “The responsibility of government, as enshrined in our constitution, is centered on protection of lives and properties and guaranteeing the welfare of her citizenry. Today, life has become worthless, People of Birnin Gwari are languishing in pains of needless murders and kidnapping, Kaduna-Abuja expressway is now a cash cow producing unquantifiable wealth for kidnappers having field day in the axis. “People are living in fear in Chikun, Kajuru, Kaura Jema’a, Kauru and many parts of the state because of government’s inability to protect them. The government we voted has sacked more workers than the insignificant few she has employed. Pensioners are languishing in penury despite the quantum of funds the state received as either bailout or Parish club refund. This quantum of income hasn’t improved the lot of our people,” the statement explained. http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/19/sorry-supporting-el-rufais-election%E2%80%8E-group-southern-kaduna/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=twitter |

Zimbabwe has declared President Robert Mugabe’s birthday on February 21 a national holiday, a state daily reported Saturday, honouring the veteran politician in power since 1980 who opponents accuse of brutal repression and devastating the economy. The declaration of the Robert Mugabe National Youth Day came after lobbying by the ruling ZANU-PF party’s youth league. “In declaring this day, we would like to highlight to our youths the values and principles so brilliantly displayed by President R.G. Mugabe which have resulted in an exemplary life that our youths can emulate,” state-owned Herald newspaper quoted home affairs minister Ignatius Chombo as saying. He said the cabinet made the decision after years of lobbying by the ruling party which also said it wants the country’s main airport named after Mugabe. Last week the cash-strapped government announced plans to build a $1bn Robert Mugabe university, joining several other facilities named after him including the government’s school of intelligence, a main street in the capital Harare and the highway to his rural home. Mugabe, now 93 years old, first came to power after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain. He says he plans to contest elections due next year despite his advanced age and concerns over his frail health. Zimbabwe’s economy has been run down, with output halved since 2000, while many basic services have collapsed and government salaries use up more than 90 percent of all public revenue. Opposition parties are in talks to try to unite and field one candidate to oppose Mugabe in the next presidential poll. Past elections, however, have been tainted by violence and intimidation by ZANU-PF operatives. http://punchng.com/zimbabwe-declares-mugabes-birthday-a-national-holiday/ |
Ekiti Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that categorisarion of hate speech as act of terrorism by the federal government is another plot to silence the opposition in the country. While cautioning the federal government against enforcing the policy, the governor noted that speaking the truth concerning the country and its rulers should not be termed as hate speech. Describing the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the number one promoter and beneficiary of hate speeches in the country, Fayose recalled that the party made "several provocative statements" when it was looking for power prior the presidential election. In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Friday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose, who said he was totally against hate speech and would support any effort to curb it, added that it was important to caution the federal government on the danger inherent in the blanket categorisation of hate speech as treasonable. He said “even if the APC government is sincere with its new found hatred for hate speeches, the APC government must first apologise to Nigerians for being the number one promoter and beneficiary of hate speech.” The governor counselled that rather than blanket criminalising of hate speeches, the federal government should embark on reorientation of Nigerians, especially the youths on the consequences of hate speeches to the unity of the country and restore the confidence of the people in the government. He said, “While I am totally against hate speech and will support any effort to curb it, it is important to caution the federal government on the danger inherent in the blanket categorisation of hate speech as treasonable. “I make bold to say that saying the truth concerning the country and its rulers cannot be termed as hate speech. “I only hope Nigeria is not being systematically returned to the colonial days when the law of sedition was used to jail many of those who fought for our independence or the era of Buhari’s military regime when the notorious Public Officers (Protection against False accusation) Decree 4 of 1984 was used to jailTunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor, both of The Guardian newspapers for publishing what the government termed as false. “It is also on record that during the 2011 election campaign, President Buhari’s inciting statement led to widespread violence by his supporters in the North after he lost. Over 1000 people were slaughtered in cold blood, including innocent National Youth Service Corp members. “Therefore, even if the APC government is sincere with its new found hatred for hate speeches, the APC government must first apologise tob Nigerians for being the number one promoter and beneficiary of hate speech." https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/apc-benefited-from-hate-speeches-says-fayose/210664.html |
While many researches have warned of its adverse health effects, a recent study says if consumed lightly or in moderation, alcohol could actually lead to a longer life. According to the study, men who have one or two drinks a day, and women who have one drink a day have a 29 percent decreased risk of heart-related death and a 22 percent reduced risk of death from any cause, compared with teetotalers. The researchers said prior studies have shown that alcohol can lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and increase “good” HDL cholesterol in the blood, adding that it appears to reduce the formation of plaques in blood vessels that can block arteries and cause strokes. The research involved data reviewed from over 333,200 people who participated in the federally-funded US national health interview surveys from 1997 to 2009. The researchers, however, found that heavy drinkers are 27 percent more likely to die from cancer, and 11 percent more likely to die early. Sreenivas Veeranki, the study co-author, said “the relationship between alcohol and death risk is a “J-shaped curve, in which too much drinking can be detrimental to health. “If you’re an alcohol consumer, drink with caution. “If you’re an alcoholic, consume lower amounts on a less-frequent amount of days. If you’re not an alcoholic, don’t start, obviously.” The new study was published on August 14 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. https://www.today.ng/culture/5271/moderate-alcohol-intake-increase-life-span-study?utm_source=NND&utm_medium=twitter |
https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/5270/niger-delta-varsity-joins-ASUU-strike?utm_source=NND&utm_medium=twitter The Niger Delta University (NDU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has joined the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the union. Dr Stanley Oguon, Chairman of the chapter, said on Thursday that the move followed a resolution reached after the local union emergency congress. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that ASUU had on Monday directed all its state chapters to go on an indefinite nationwide industrial action. Oguon told NAN in Yenagoa that although the university was preparing for its end of semester examinations, the lecturers believe in the genuineness of the ASUU struggle. Meanwhile, a student of the university, Andy Micheal, has appealed to the Federal Government to dialogue with ASUU, so as not to prolong the strike. He said that any delay in the negotiation would be counterproductive to students and the nation’s education sector. |
Reports reaching DAILY POST from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital have it that suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers have killed at least 27 people and wounded 83 in a new attack. Reuters reports that the attack happened on Tuesday. A woman bomber reportedly blew up her self and killed 27 others at a market in Konduga, a village near Maiduguri. This is coming barely five hours after the launching of the special force, mobile strike teams by the theatre commander operations Lafiya Dole, with directives to track down Boko Haram spiritual leader, Abubakar Shekau. The attack by suicide bombers on Mandarari town of Konduga Local Government Area at about 5:50 pm was the third in series within the month of August, 2017. Although details of the attack were still sketchy, a member of the civilian JTF, who identified himself as Aminu Sani told DAILY POST in Maiduguri that the number of casualties was not certain. He, however, said dozens were feared killed in the attack. Our people from Konduga and those who left from here with soldiers are yet to return. “The National Emergency Management Agency and State Emergency Management Agency have also sent their staff to the area. I believe by tomorrow we should be able to know the number,” Aminu said. According to him, “the attack occurred at a motor park, and today is the market day, which means several people were affected.” The army and the police are yet to make statement to this effect as of the time of this report. http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/15/breaking-scores-killed-boko-haram-hits-borno/ |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced N400 million poll bribe cash to the accounts of some firms and a charity organisation allegedly owned by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi. The accounts are those of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd and Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd and David Umahi Faith Foundation. The Deputy Governor of the state, Fidelis Nwankwo and a former minister, Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu, were also said to have admitted collecting the cash. They were said to have admitted that based on the instructions of the governor, the N400 million was handed over to a branch of Access Bank in Abakaliki. There were indications last night that the EFCC might seal off all the companies implicated in the bribery scandal. Only the sum of N90 million of the said sum was said to have been refunded. The N400 million was the sum allocated to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State out of the N23,299,705,000 slush funds provided by the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke. According to findings made by our correspondent, the anti-graft agency was able to establish that the governor was central to the allocation of the N400 million and the coordination of its disbursement. The funds were later wired into the accounts of the two firms and the charity organisation. Investigation confirmed that the companies were incorporated by the incumbent Governor of Ebonyi State in 1993 and 2011 respectively. A reliable source said: “In the state, Kelechi Igwe (incumbent deputy governor), Fidelis Nwanwko and Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu collected the money to prosecute the 2015 general election. “Fidelis Nwankwo and Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu were invited and they disclosed that they collected the N400 million from Fidelity Bank and handed it over to Access Bank on the directive of the then Deputy Governor, Engr David Umahi, who is now the incumbent governor. “The Operations Manager of Access Bank Abakaliki was invited, and he revealed that the money was paid into the accounts of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd and Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd. domiciled in Abakaliki.” It was learnt that detectives traced the N400 million to the accounts of the two companies and Umahi Faith Foundation. Analysis of the accounts indicated that while N300 million was paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd, N100 million was remitted into the account of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd. The N100 million in the account of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd was later transferred to David Umahi Faith Foundation. The detectives later uncovered how the funds were subsequently withdrawn by one Chinyere Egwuche in tranches of N50 million. Another source said: “The movement of the fund from one account to another and the subsequent cash withdrawal of N300 million in tranches of N50 million are clear features of money laundering . “Consequently, letters of invitation were written to the Managing Directors of the companies where the money was paid but the letters were returened undelivered as the addressees refused to collect them. “Thereafter, Austin Umahi, Maxwell Umahi, Chinyere Egwuche and Mabel Dikibo were arrested. Investigation revealed that Chinyere Egwuchu and Mabel Dikibo were the signatories to the accounts of the companies. “It was also discovered that one of the suspects, Chinyere, withdrew the N300 million paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm which, according to her, was used to further the construction of Osborn La-Palm hotels in Abakaliki, Uburu and Port Harcourt. As at press time, the three key suspects, who were arrested and grilled, had been released on bail. But the EFCC was able to recover N90 million out of the N400 million. It was learnt that while the properties of the two indicted companies have been tagged as “Under Investigation,” the EFCC may soon seal off the assets if the suspects do not refund the poll bribe cash.” http://thenationonlineng.net/n23-2bn-poll-bribery-cash-efcc-traces-n400m-governors-hotel-others-accounts-2/ |
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has directed the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), to comply with the judgment of the Supreme Court that ordered the reinstatement of a retired Comptroller, Abdullahi Gusau. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, while delivering a unanimous judgment in April, had ordered the Customs to reinstate Gusau, who was wrongfully sacked. Unhappy with the manner in which he was sacked, Gusau had approached the high court. The judgment did not however go in his favour. Dissatisfied with the judgment, he proceeded to the Court of Appeal which ordered his reinstatement, a ruling that was affirmed by the Supreme Court in April. The appellate court ordered the NCS to re-absorb Gusau and retain his position as comptroller, pay all his benefits and accord him his promotions. Gusau was promoted to the rank of a comptroller on January 1, 2000. He was retired on December 21, 2009. http://punchng.com/agf-directs-customs-boss-to-reinstate-retired-comptroller/ |

It is pitiable and highly regrettable that education in this country has gone from bad to worse, the whole essence of education is now tantamount to schooling. A graduate in this country is now an economic liability and a family nuisance, it is time we discourage schooling and encourage education, we have missed it all by thinking that the only form of education is in the classrooms, doctors are now killers, engineers are now accident originators even academicians are nothing to write home about, the level of insecurity in this country has become alarming that we can no longer sleep with our eyes closed, we deceive ourselves in the name of “GOVERNMENT JOB” that will earn u an average of 80k per month as a graduate and the society demands you spend a minimum of 100k per month as a n individual and you say stealing will not erupt, it most erupt, the more we try to fight corruption the more it fight backs, Nigeria has become unlivable by NIGERIANS. I stand with OURMUMUDONDO not only with respect to P.M.B but also in all other sectors we have been shortchanged. |

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari of planning to truncate the nation’s democracy. The party said that it was totally wrong for security agencies to brutalise protesters. It said it was unfortunate that the Federal Government could ask the security agencies to brutalise citizens who called on Buhari to either resume work or resign from office. Spokesperson for the party, Dayo Adeyeye, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, called on Nigerians to be at alert, saying the ruling party must be cautioned. He said, “We have said it before and we will continue to say it: The Federal Government is planning to truncate the country’s democracy with its actions. “There is no freedom of speech, no freedom of expression and no freedom of association. “The PDP was in government and allowed protests; we never brutalised any protester.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/09/buhari-government-planning-truncate-nigerias-democracy-pdp/ |

As at the time the constitution was amended in 2010 it took cognizance of the president leaving the country without handing over hence the constitution was amended compelling the president to transmit a letter to the National Assembly. And once he does that, the Vice President shall automatically become the Acting President, Senior lawyers yesterday, reacted to calls for the president to resign, said there is no constitution time limit for his return. Speaking on yesterday’s protest, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) said the constitution is silent on how long the president can be away on medical vacation. “As at the time the constitution was amended in 2010 it took cognizance of the president leaving the country without handing over hence the constitution was amended compelling the president to transmit a letter to the National Assembly. And once he does that, the Vice President shall automatically become the Acting President,” he said. “If he does not transmit a letter after 21 days, the vice president shall automatically become the president, ditto for the states. But as to the duration the president can be absent, the constitution is silent. “So it is therefore hoped that the ongoing review of the constitution will address that because you may have a situation where an elected president will be away for three and half years out of his four years tenure or even the entire four years tenure. It is a possibility.” He however added that it was the members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that could pass a resolution that the president can no longer discharge the functions of his office, adding that once it is done, a team of five medical practitioners will be constituted to examine the president’s medical condition. He said if the team finds that the president can no longer discharge the functions of his office, he shall be made to resign. Also speaking, Mr. Yusuf Ali (SAN) said there is no provision in the constitution on any action if the president is absent for 90 days. He said the requirement is that “once he transmits the letter to the National Assembly, the country will have an Acting President.” For his part, Abuja-based lawyer, Tawo Eja Tawo (SAN) said the office of the president is not vacant following the transmission of letter of vacation to the National Assembly. “The only time the Constitution envisages 90 days is when the president and vice president are incapacitated. Then the Senate President would now act for 90 days and election will be conducted,” he said. But Abeny Mohammed (SAN) said the Acting President does not wield full powers as he is being hampered in his functions, adding that he must seek clearance for whatever action he takes. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/politics/no-time-limit-for-president-s-resumption-falana-ali/209090.html |

Former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole and the Chairman Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, PACAC, Prof Itse Sagay, yesterday, said that the current Nigeria structure was not favourable to states. The two All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders spoke at the 20th Wole Soyinka Annual Lecture Series in Benin, against the backdrop of the current call for restructuring of the country. They admitted that there was the need to restructure some aspects of the polity. The event was put together by the national association of SEAGODS in Benin, the Edo capital. Present governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, who chaired the occasion, pointed out that the country’s unity was not negotiable and expressed optimism that Nigeria would become great again. ‘’The question of whether Nigeria has come to stay is a non issue. I guess what is challenging us today is the sort of country we should create for ourselves’’, he said. The immediate past governor of the state, Oshhiomhole, who was the guest lecturer at the event said what should occupy the minds of Nigerians was how to keep the country united and viable. According to him, “It is not in our interest to be thinking of dividing after 103 years of our existence as a nation. “It is not a viable conversation that having lived this long together, we should divide. Rather, we should think of ways of doing things differently for better results. ‘’The structural issue in the country needs to be addressed. This entails the issue of the very rich structure and the very poor structure.” Also speaking at the event, Sagay said true federalism would promote good governance in the country, pointing out that present allocation formula was not ideal. Sagay said the current structure had prevented states from carrying out their responsibilities. According to him, states should be allowed to control their mineral resources to avoid their over dependence on monthly allocation from the Federal Government. Sagay wondered ‘’why should the centre have all the resources and states be impoverished?” http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/05/nigerian-structure-needs-addressed-oshiomhole-sagay/ |
