Car Talk › All You Need To Know About Wheel Alignment and Steering. by cardoctor(op):
When your tire alignment is off, your ability to drive safely is compromised. Sometimes unaligned wheels can be obvious – your car pulls to one side of the road or your steering wheel has a vibration in it from balancing issues. In some cases, it can be subtle and the driver won’t even notice. That’s why regular tire alignment checkups are a must-do. The better maintenance you keep, the longer your car will run healthily. If your car alignment feels off – or if it’s simply been a while, kindly visit your mechanic. When your wheels are aligned, your car handles better.

CAR ALIGNMENT SERVICES

WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK

Inspect vehicle suspension and steering systems, including tire air pressure and tire condition
Vehicle placed on an alignment rack, where laser sensors are mounted and measure the current alignment settings
Print initial tire alignment readings

WHEEL ALIGNMENT: STANDARD

Inspect suspension and steering systems, including air pressure and tire condition
Vehicle placed on alignment rack, where sensors are mounted and compensated
Print initial tire alignment readings.
Camber, caster and toe angles are adjusted according to manufacturer specifications
Print final tire alignment readings.
Test drive the vehicle

4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT SERVICES

4-wheel alignments improves the accuracy and precision of your vehicle’s camber, caster and toe angles. We recommends getting your alignment checked every 6 months or 6,000 miles. 4-wheel alignments should be checked at regular intervals.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT?

During a 4-wheel alignment, the automotive technicians will use state-of-the-art computerized technology to measure the camber, caster and toe. The technician will then adjust those angles (when applicable) to match vehicle manufacturer specifications, ensuring a smooth ride, even tire wear and efficient fuel economy. A front end alignment and rear end alignment will be completed during a 4-wheel alignment service.

Every 4-wheel alignment should includes inspection of your car’s front and rear steering and suspension components. During every wheel alignment, your Auto Care technician should also verify tire size and adjust tire air pressure.

WHY DO CAMBER, CASTER, AND TOE ANGLES NEED ADJUSTMENT?

Every wheel has camber, caster and toe angles – when they are correctly aligned, your car drives straight. When the camber, caster and toe angles are misaligned, wheel alignment problems can arise. Your vehicle can pull to the left or right or your tires can wear unevenly. At a basic level, the camber angle, caster angle and toe angle keeps your tires, steering and overall vehicle driving straight and even.

STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AND PULLS

Does your car pull to one side of the road? Are you tires wearing irregularly or prematurely? Has your steering wheel shifted position? All of these are symptoms of wheel alignment problems. Misaligned wheels and suspension will lead to faster tire wear, poor fuel economy and overall decreased vehicle performance.

Wheel alignment problems can be the result of:
Vehicle collisions
Driving over a pothole
Running into a curb
Normal use over time

Wheel alignment problems can be solved with a wheel alignment service. It’s not easy driving around with a shifted steering wheel or a car that pulls to one side. If you wait to get a wheel alignment, your tires may need replacement sooner and your fuel economy can suffer. Avoid additional expense and time by dealing with a wheel alignment problem at the first sign of trouble.

Car Talk › Re: My Experience "Ringing" An Engine by cardoctor(m): 10:51am On Dec 12, 2024
temmym4:
I have decided to share this with everyone just to help someone out there who might be in the shoe i was once in.

As a lover of Manual Tranny, i missed and wanted to keep one at home to drive so i eventually got a fairly used Nissan Primera p11 (1998) quite clean and ok, but one issue, Revving the engine brings out smoke from the exhaust, not a serious smoke actually but if u are the type that know your onions, it is clearly an indication that Valves and/or Rings and starting to worn out and allowing oil into them little by little.

*Please note that i knew about this before i agree with the deal and the price the vehicle was given out was ok for me to replace the engine if i wish to.

I guess this happened due to the Negligence of the former owner and the type of engine oil he uses.

The thing is, u cant find out yourself except if someone rev the vehicle for you while u watch from the rear.

Some other days, the vehicle brings out smokes for few seconds after parking overnight.

Apart from the smoking part, i took time to check underneath the engine bottom plate or oil pan (not a mechanic so i actually don't know what that is called) and found oil at the bottom, which actually indicates there is a leak. And d way thing look dow there, i can see that the pan hit a hard stuff and i guess there is a little crack

Now there are 3 things involved,
1. My engine oil is leaking from the bottom due to a crack oil pan
2. It sometimes brings out blue smoke after parking a long time, for instance, overnight.. then stops, i.e valve seals are bad.
3. Revving a bit higher brings out blue smokes too, visible only to people behind u.. i.e my Piston rings are beginning to go bad already.

Although the car moves well and the engine still very active, i know i v got to get solution to those stuffs before it kills the engine and probably smoking all day on with no compression later on.

Did i tell u i had to top 1L of oil every 2 weeks since it's shortening and after a long journey?

I decided to visit a trusted mechanic and i explained things to him.

On the issue of engine, i had an option of either buying another one which costs about 130k or rebuild my existing one with new valve seals and rings which costs around 30k.

I have heard a lot of sad stories concerning ringing so i opted that one out. Some even said it doesn't last more than 6 months.
He smiled and explained some things to me.

"A successful Ringing involves an experience mechanic and also using genuine parts, " and that "some of the engines which is even sold to people as tokunbo are the refurbished ones, worked on with new rings by us here and resold as tokunbo"

I wasn't really convinced at first but after some months i made a calculation..

*A new Tokunbo engine costs around 130k (I wasn't ready to spend that on something am not even sure of the quality)

*My mechanic will rebuild my old engine for 30k

*I buy 1Litre oil for top-up every 2weeks at 2k, thats 4k for a month, apart from the regular service i do every 2 months with an oil of 4k.

So for a total of 6 months, l will use about 10Litres (10 cans of 1L) topping oil and 8Litres (2 cans of 4L) for regular servicing which makes a total of N28,000 just for the oil aside workmanship.

Now, why not put this money together and try out the engine ringing, use it for the same 6months. It's iron cast built engine anyway so it shouldn't be very hard for a successful rebuilding afterall, according to what i got online.

Besides, the money is not even up to what some people will give to a lady or buy drinks at a go. Even some people spend more than that to service their cars just one month.

Job started, oil pan was replaced.. New rings and valve seals done. The whole job took 3 days.

Before i went to pick it up, i read about what and what not to do after ringing an engine so i got that covered

Throughout my journey home, i wasn't convenient driving the car as i was busy listening to any sign of somethin breaking in the engine . grin.. Infact i go drive small and open the bonnet to check if water has mixed with the engine oil, or maybe coolant is now inside the gear oil grin

There was even a point where i could smell oil burning when the engine was warm after driving some minutes, i pulled over to see if oil has splashed all over the road grin

I have never paid attention to all my dashboard gauges like that single moment of driving away from mechanic workshop after the ring was done.

After that day, i began a countdown when that 6 months will come. More like someone who is waiting for a death sentence. Damn, some people can give u fear and discouragement ehn grin

To cut the long story short. 6 months has come and gone, car is used everyday and travels long journeys too, smoke no gree come o, instead na water vapor dey come out of it's exhaust every morning.. Especially steaming during cold mornings grin

Not a single drop of oil again either underneath or on oil stick.

The only thing i do now is change the oil and filter every 3 months or 3000KM whichever comes first. Nothin more.

Imagine still letting myself suffer till now and wasting money just because some Kazeems did a bad job for someone else, either an inexperienced one or he purposely bought knock off piston rings.

Also the first 1000KM after ringing matters too. I had to follow instructions online on how to break-in vehicle with new rings properly, i don't just depend on my mechanic advice only.

And yes, a "Kazeem" did the job for me,

My advice.

*Never let anyone push you, listen to advises, make use of the one that favours you, don't just just follow others' footsteps.

*Not everyone has got a lost of cash in the bank and can afford to buy a Tokunbo engine.

*Just because Mr A's job wasn't done successfully doesn't quite mean yours will follow the same pattern

*Don't be too stingy with your mechanic, you will be at the receiving end since they ll keep cheating you and buying you knock off parts, don't act too wise. Especially when rebuilding engine

*Get a competent mechanic with a fear of God who ll tell you the truth, it will help you and your car a lot

*I think Iron cast built engines are better rebuilt compared to the Aluminium ones. Infact i wont advice anyone with aluminium engine to rebuild, my own opinion.

*Personally, i feel getting competent mechanics that specializes on commercial vehicle will do a better job rebuilding an engine. My own opinion and from experience though.

My own story though. I hope it helps someone out there.
Please share your experience too if you ever had an engine rebuilt, maybe someone out there can learn from the perfection and mistakes as well.

***UPDATE**
It's almost 2 years already. Car doesnt smoke, everything is still in perfect condition.
Just servicing as at when due will keep your vehicle healthy and it will serve you for long.
Nice tip. The conditions may not be exact to all individuals so its still best to approach with caution while choosing who carries out the repairs and the experience and knowledge they have.
Car Talk › Nigeria Top 10 Car Models To Buy For Christmas/ New Year by cardoctor(op): 10:46am On Dec 12, 2024
As the yuletide season and New Year approaches, prices of brand new cars continue to skyrocket in Nigeria, many families and corporate bodies have resorted to purchasing imported used vehicles, otherwise known as Tokunbo and locally-used vehicles to meet their day-to-day transportation needs.

A visit to some car showrooms across the country revealed that many of them are empty. This is unlike in the past when franchise holders and distributors used to display various models of new vehicles.

The few showrooms still in business have scanty brand new vehicles on display these days.

The amount used in purchasing 20 cars to fill a showroom 10 years ago can hardly buy two brand new vehicles today. Many also complain of poor sales.

Currently, the cheapest new car in the country costs over N25 million. And this could only be found among the Chinese brands.

Due to high cost of new automobiles, most buyers now settle for imported used cars which they find affordable under the current economic situation.

Only the super-rich in the country can afford the luxury of owing brand new cars.

Investigations also show that most reputable companies now patronise imported used cars to keep their businesses going.

To them, reliability, durability functionality, ease of maintenance, affordability are the main considerations in acquiring vehicles for their businesses and this is where prudent spending comes in.

The argument of these buyers is that some imported used cars can deliver even better than a number of brand new ones if they are properly maintained.

Another important consideration before buying a used car is the resale value after using them for several years.

It was learnt that some of the vehicles could attract even high prices after using them for years.

The best in used cars category
Vanguard investigation reveals that the best selling used cars in Nigeria are the Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes, Honda and Acura models.

Specifically, the models are:

*Toyota Corolla

*Toyota Camry (Sedan)

*Toyota Highlander

*Toyota RAV4

*Lexus 330, 350 RX

*Honda Pilot

*Acura MDX

*Toyota Sienna

*Mercedes 350 ML

*Honda Accord.

Toyota Corolla produced from 2003 to 2013 was the number one imported used car in Nigeria for a long time.

Though it has been about three model changes within the period, each successive model has proved to be the best in its class in term of fuel efficiency, durability, easy to maintain with availability of spare parts.

They come in manual and automatic transmission but the automatic transmission models are the choice model for buyers in Nigeria.

They come in four cylinder engine of 1.6 and 1.8 litre versions.

Before the Corolla dominance of the market, the Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic were the other contenders but could not cope with the Corolla’s qualities over time.

Camry
Following the Corolla on the list is the Toyota Camry produced between 2000 and 2013. They are bigger than the Corolla.

The Camry comes in four and six cylinder engines, thereby giving options to buyers to settle for a more powerful ride.

It is also available in manual and automatic models and the automatic is the preferred model.

The Camry is a very reliable Sedan and has dominated its segment over the years.

The Highlander is another Toyota model that is very visible on Nigerian roads, especially those produced from 2003 to 2013.

It comes in four and six cylinder engines, sharing some engine parts with the Camry V6 engine.

It is described as one of the easiest Sport Utility Vehicles to maintain and a workhorse too.

Though available in six cylinder engine, the Highlander is considered to be fuel efficient when compared with other cars of the same engine capacity.

Following the Highlander on the list is another Toyota model, the RAV4, which looks more compact with the option of four and six cylinder engines.

It looks sporty and has always been the preferred model for ladies and those preferring compact SUVs.

The models that are all over Nigerian roads are those produced from 2003 to 2013.

On the list of good used cars is the Toyota Sienna mini-bus. It is the toast of transport operators across the country.

The Sienna comes in six cylinder version and it has ruled its segment since the first model was produced in the early 2000.

It is very spacious and durable, making it the lone king in its segment.

Following the Sienna on the list of preferred used car models is the Lexus 300, 330 and 350 SUVs.

The three Lexus models are at home in Nigeria in the used vehicle segment even when Lexus has no official representative in Nigeria. They boast exceptional luxury with leather seat and beautiful interior.

All the Lexus models are available in six cylinder engine of 3.0, 3.3 and 3.5 litre engine since the year 2000 to 2013.

Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz 350 ML Sport Utility Vehicle is the only German model that has much visibility as the Japanese models and brands.

It sits comfortably in the seventh place as the best selling model in Nigeria, especially those produced from the year 2005 to 2013.

Its luxury features are topnotch as well as the drive quality and fuel consumption.

The only minus is that the electrical feature could give owners sleepless night when it starts malfunctioning. Ask owners of Mercedes-Benz ML 2005 to 2011 what is called Sam in the car, which has made most of them to run away from it despite the many good features.

The Honda family (2003-2013) are the next in line in terms of preferred choice in Nigeria.

The Honda Pilot in the last few years has won the hearts of most buyers of used cars in Nigeria. Its popularity has been on the rise.

It has some unique features as a family car, including space, pace and affordable spare parts which most people are not aware of.

It comes in six cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The interior of the Pilot is quite creative which is beginning to draw many new customers to the model.

Acura
The Acura MDX too is on the list of cars that Nigerians prefer in the used car segment. It shares a lot with the Pilot in terms of engine and transmission but has better interior features, being a luxury version of the Honda family.

The Acura as a luxury car comes with a more beautiful design.

The other car on the preferred used car list in Nigeria is the Honda Accord which is the version of the Toyota Camry.

It is available in four and six cylinder engine as well as manual and automatic transmission.

The Accord is fuel-efficient and each model boasts unique design with creative interior. Its visible minus is the legs that pull off when it is not given proper attention by the driver.
