Career / A Sample Plan To Meet Your Goals by career1st(f): 3:02pm On Dec 28, 2007
Personal development plan, self –help plan and self development plan all mean the same thing. I usually like to talk about what it is, what it can do, and why people should have one because we have since realised that this aspect poses a challenge to many graduates and professionals alike.

It is often said and many ears have heard this “write your vision down plainly on paper and run with it,” but many just write their vision and goals or objectives on paper and toss it under their pillow expecting a miracle. What then occurs is 6 months, 2 years, or 5 years down memory lane, some, if not all of the things written haven’t really been achieved.

Plan and see how far you really can get.

If you require a sample of a personal development plan (PDP) e-mail contactus@career-first.org or visit www.career-first.org and hit on the BLOG link

You took the right step by reaching out for help. I was once in your shoes and i made the decision to come home. The land is green here but you have to see it for yourself. I mean, its a pschological battle considering the many challenges here but with many answers and soultions too. The environment is for the most part depressing like someone rightly said (UK).

If you are starting to dream, then its very likely that there is something you are been told by Someone. For many of us, our instincts are one of the least things we utilise but are sooooooo significant. Moreover, if your really good job is starting to make you feel edgy and uncomfortable, its only a matter of time. You may take out your frustrations with the indecision on friends, colleagues and loved ones and i'm certain you don't even want to think about that.

Check your work style, sitback and think about things holistically, maybe your persona conflicts with your working conditions and environment, maybe your interests are completely elsewhere (like Nigeria), make sure it's not because your friends have left for Naij that you are feeling this way. Feelings are temporary and can derail our destined path when we take certain actions!

Having said all these, pray even if you don't believe there is a God.
Career / Searching For Greener Pastures In A Green Land by career1st(f): 1:49am On Nov 16, 2007
The average Nigerian graduate or just about to graduate from school still wants to jet! It was Ukraine, then bosnia or something in those weird lines that i heard the other day from a final year student who just wants to leave the country and get any job offered as long as its outside of Nigeria. Well i did my bit in trying to convinve her of the many opportunities in the face of many problems but I wonder, is project FIX NIGERIA INITIATIVE having any impact on youths? What about the many NIGERIA IS MY FATHERLAND & CAN'T LIVE ANYWHERE songs and display of patriotism in recent years? Is anything sinking in?

I tell, there is hope and anyone that doesn't see it and plug in within the next 5years , Catching up may be just too late!
Career / Re: Choosing A Career Path: Who Decides - My Parents Or Me? by career1st(f): 8:01pm On Nov 10, 2007
On a broader view, degree of influence varies depending on the level at education, experience and background of the individual in focus. You and you alone are the author of your career path. Parents, career advisors, mentors, pastors, imams, friends, whoever you look up to are all there as guides and not dictators during the decision-making process.

As someone said, this is a common trend in our part of the world. Development is creating room for many career paths that would have been looked down at or totally accepted by a parent.

The end point should always be personal fulfilment and service (which can be relative).
