Osinbajo lays foundation for Ogun railway wagon plant

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says railways holds the master key to transforming commerce in Nigeria and Africa at large.
He said this during the official ground-breaking ceremony of the Wagon assembly plant in Kajola, Ogun sate, on Saturday.
Osinbajo said the plant, which is a private investment undertaken by CCECC, a Chinese company, is “central in the production of rolling stock spare parts and maintenance equipment needed for the railway modernization programme being implemented by the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.”
He said after its completion, the plant would produce some parts of the wagons for the Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna rail lines.
“This ceremony is not just another event, it is a historic turning point, for us, the railway is not just an alternative and comfortable mode of travel, it holds the master key to transforming commerce in Nigeria and across the continent,” he said.

“By linking our ports to rail lines and now, building the rolling stock locally, import and export business within and out of Africa’s largest market will be completely transformed. When completed, it is expected that the plant would produce some parts of the wagons for the Lagos – Ibadan and Abuja – Kaduna rail lines, but also for the central rail lines and to satisfy the needs of other rail operators within the West-African sub-region.”
The vice-president commended CCECC for the investment, adding that the project will provide a platform for obtaining technical knowledge on rails.
He also said the plant will generate 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“The plant would offer an important platform for engineers, technicians, artisans and other professionals to gain the specialized skills required for the production and maintenance of rolling stock,” he said.
“This will invariably conduce to spin-off businesses in the region of operation in particular and across the country wherever rail networks are in existence. The plant is expected to generate about five thousand (5,000) direct and indirect jobs.”
Osinbajo said the federal government is optimising the Lagos-Ibadan rail modernisation project by extending it to the Apapa port.
“Also, we are putting all mechanisms in place to achieve the swift completion of the Ibadan Inland Dry port which will off-take containers and cargoes from Apapa port through the Lagos – Ibadan rail line,” he said.

In case you missed it, Africa's tech giant doesn't worry about little Kenya.

Dara Oladosu, a Nigerian Tech developer and founder of Quoted Replies, was filled with excitement last night after he was offered a job at Twitter to help build a native “quoted tweet” feature for the platform.

Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, is currently in Nigeria and he had a meet and greet with media personalities as well as Tech developers in Nigeria.

At the meeting, Dara's app, Quoted Replies, a Twitter-based bot that helps users of the platform find quoted replies of tweets without having to go through the hassle of copying, pasting, and searching for it, was discussed. Dara built the bot in December 2018 after he stumbled upon the ability to copy a tweet’s link and search Twitter for its quoted replies.

Fascinated by his work, a member of the Twitter management, Kayvon Beykpour, who was on the panel with Dorsey, instantly offered Dara an opportunity to join them so they can development this feature which is not originally on the app. Kayvon is the product lead at Twitter.

An excited Dara accepted the offer.

Beautiful sisters who can’t stop eating soap

Sharon Chepchirchir basks in the sun outside her mother’s house in Kibochi village, Nandi.

A few minutes later, Chepchirchir, 24, takes out a bar of soap from her jacket.

I thought she wanted to wash her face or hands but was shocked when she started to eat it.

Chepchirchir has had an insatiable appetite for soap for 19 years.

The bit she is munching is the same one she had used to bathe in the morning.

“I don’t know why I eat soap but I enjoy it. I discovered my appetite for soap when I was five years old,” recalls Chepchirchir.

Power of soap operas

And, she has never had stomach upsets, irritation in her mouth or any other health problem from eating soap.

And she is not the only "soap-olic" in her family.

About six years ago, Chepchirchir discovered her younger sister, Lydia Chepkemboi, too, had an appetite for soap.

“My younger sister lived with my aunt and we rarely met. One day, I noticed she had a bar of soap in her pocket. I asked what she was doing with it and she said she eats soap. This brought us closer because we borrow soap from one another,” she says.

The sisters have puzzled residents of Kibochi village, who often troop to their home to see them eat the substance.

In 2014, when she was pregnant, Chepchirchir says she asked a doctor at Chepterwai Nyayo Hospital in Mosop whether soap would affect her health or that of her baby.

“The doctor said it was the first time he was encountering a soap eater. He also said he was unaware of any condition that makes people eat soap. He, however, said soap was not poisonous,” recounts Chepchirchir, who has been a domestic worker since 2015.

Chepchirchir was always in trouble with her mother and grandmother due to the habit.

“They would beat me but I didn’t stop eating soap. I continued stealing soap until they gave up. I would sneak into bathrooms, even neighbours’, and steal soap.”

Powder soap

“Eating soap has never affected my health. I also eat any food. If I can’t get a bar of soap, I lick powder soap.”

Over the past two years, Chepchirchir has desperately been working hard to stop eating soap.

She has even tried divine intervention, and spent Sh10,000 on prayers to no avail. She sought divine help after their grandmother said they’d been cursed.

She once approached a pastor in Nairobi where she worked as a house help for prayers. The preacher, she says, asked for Sh5,000. However, the prayers didn’t take away her craving for soap.

Last Sunday, she paid another Sh5,000 for prayers but her appetite for soap never died.

“I recently visited a hospital in Kapsabet and I was told my health is perfect. I’m yet to understand why I eat soap,” says Chepchirchir.

She adds: “While in secondary school, I would sleep in a secluded cubicle because I didn’t want my colleagues to know I ate soap. I would buy less of what was considered necessary so I had extra cash for soap.”

On her part, Chepkemboi says she just found herself enjoying soap.

The 17-year-old Form Three student says she always has a bar of soap in her pocket.

“I am also shocked that I eat soap. I have worked hard to hide the habit but some of my friends know about it. They say I am not normal. I want to stop but I just can’t,” says Chepkemboi.

Their mother, Monica Jebet, says she has tried all means to stop her daughters from eating soap without success.

“I did all I could to stop this habit, including hiding soap and caning them but it didn’t work. I am asking specialists to help us understand this mysterious behaviour. Some medics say eating soap could be genetic,” says the mother of four.

Solomon Komen, a nutritionist at Tophill Hospital, says the sisters may be lacking some minerals in their bodies.

Determine minerals

Komen warned eating soap may eventually affect their health because of the chemicals used to manufacture it.

“We need to carry out tests to determine the minerals the sisters may be lacking and take remedial measures.”

Mark Kiptoo, an Eldoret-based oncologist, warned chemicals used in making soap, including potassium, are harmful and may lead to long-term effects in key organs.

“The chemicals can damage the kidney and liver if consumed in large quantities for a long period of time,” Dr Kiptoo said.

He added: “Eating soap is strange. The girls should seek medical specialists for tests. They should also undergo blood and tissue analysis to establish if they lack some nutrients.”

Lagos takes the crown in Africa, am not refuting the facts. So, how are those building you initially posted got to do with tech hub.? Now I'm VERY conversant with the tech industry in Africa in general and I can tell you for free... Don't joke with Lagos... It will end in tears... Nairo-->What?! .....take a back seat already.

The area has benefitted from its overwhelmingly online population and the country’s growing technology-savvy middle class. In fact, Lagos is even suffering from some of the same problems faced by the likes of London and New York, including the fact that prices are climbing. This doesn’t seem to have dampened much of the hype, though.
