Car TalkDid You Know That Fuel Sales Accounts For 5.6% Of The National Average Income Pe by CarmudiNG(op): 10:31am On Jul 06, 2015
How Affordable Is Fuel to the Average Nigerian

Carmudi Analyses Global Gas Prices

Lagos Nigeria, June 27th 2015 Global consumer demand for petrol has steadily grown thanks to low oil prices combined with economic growth, according to the International Energy Agency. In 2014, global oil demand was 92.6 million barrels per day, and demand for 2015 is expected to increase by 1.4 million barrels each day, to a total of 94 million. This phenomenon truly spans the globe; gas prices have decreased from the pumps in Pakistan to stations in Senegal. But while most countries have seen savings, the price of gas differs wildly across the globe.

Carmudi, the leading online car platform, examined the fuel price and general affordability of petrol in eighteen emerging markets. In Africa, it comes as no surprise that fuel prices in Nigeria, the biggest oil producer in the region, are among the cheapest standing at $0.46 per litre or 5.6% of the national average income per day. Fuel prices look different for those East African countries with significantly lower average incomes. In Rwanda, where fuel costs $1.17, the average person makes only $1.55 per day. One liter accounts for over 75% of a typical daily income, almost a full day’s work.

In Indonesia, where fuel subsidies have been cut by the government since early 2015, most people are forced to spend over 30% of their daily earnings to buy a single litre of petrol. In Sri Lanka a single litre of fuel costs $0.96, taking up to nearly 45% of the national average daily

Carmudi created an infographic using Q2 2015 prices and 2014 average income data compiled from sources including Nigeria National Bureau Statistics, Philippines Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics, The Pan African Bank, Crédit Agricole, Trading Economics, Global Petrol Prices, and World Vision. 2014 income data were used for all countries except Vietnam (2015) and Sri Lanka (GDP per capita). Petrol price for Myanmar is Q2 2014.

Fuel prices in Mexico, the world’s seventh largest oil producer, are similar to prices in several Asian countries such as Vietnam, where a litre is priced at $0.92 and $0.97, respectively. Despite the similar prices, the average daily income in Mexico is almost three times more than Vietnam. It takes 7.8% of a day’s wage in Mexico to buy a litre; whereas, in Vietnam it costs more than 25% of the average daily income.

Fuel prices in the oilwealthy Middle East are incredibly low, and that, coupled with the high average daily income, makes it the best place to own a gas guzzler. Prices range from $0.15 per liter in Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s largest oil producer (average daily income $143.60), to $0.26 in Qatar, the world’s third largest oil producer (average daily income $382.60), to $0.47 in the United Arab Emirates, the world’s eighth largest oil producer (average daily income $170.00).

Car TalkTips And Tricks To Traveling Safely… by CarmudiNG(op): 11:06am On Oct 16, 2014
https://www.carmudi.com.ng/journal/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/be-ready-for-a-road-trip.png

Every once in a while we all need that little weekend get-away from the 9-5 day to day hustle… It’s a lot easier when you’re flying and you just need to show up at the airport with your luggage. When a road trip is concerned you need a little more than that. The following tips would be helpful to get you all geared up for your trip. firstly your car should be in it’s best condition, meaning it should have been properly serviced; the engine, the oil and brakes in shape. As a matter of fact the best time to go on a trip is after servicing your vehicle. It is also advisable to use an almost new battery ( less than 3 years old) or have a spare one in your trunk. Make sure your air-bags are intact as well. Another major car precaution is looking out for your tyres. It should have the average air pressure and if less you should refill and also check the spare ones. There’s nothing more reassuring than a good wheel especially in long distance driving. In addition always look out for complete and up to date vehicle papers. Do not travel with an outdated car document. It saves you a lot of time because when the road corps stop you they have no reason to delay you. In fact there is a level of confidence you have when your papers are perfect. Finally it is very important to wash and fuel your car before a long trip. Give your ride a proper cleaning and vacuming in and out. Then make sure you have a full fuel tank although there would always be a need to refill. To use less fuel, pack light, take only the very necessary Items. A vehicle with less weight consumes less fuel. With these tips and some food you are more than ready for your journey. Speed less and enjoy your drive.

Car TalkWhat’s Rumbling Inside Of Your Car... by CarmudiNG(op): 4:55pm On Oct 08, 2014
Carmudi listens to the most random car noises and tells you what they mean

Sounds from the depths of your car reveal a lot about its overall state. They can be annoying or even harmless but they can also indicate that there is a serious problem. Reckless drivers tend to risk increased wear, if not damaged tyres or undercarriage. However, your car fights back! It starts to rumble, tremble, crack, buzz or clatter out of places you are not even aware of. Carmudi, the world’s fastest growing online car classified has played detective and kept its ears open to what a car has to ‘say’.

Be aware of these alarming sounds that a car is able to release when something is off:

Buzz: You sense a slight buzzing sound when driving on a slippery road? Suspected is the profile of the tyre tread; a saw-tooth profile is responsible for making that noise. The cause may be a worn shock absorber.

Clack:
The main reason behind a clacking noise might be the driving shaft, situated between the gearbox and wheel. In order for the connection to be flexible, there is a ball joint, since the wheel has to feather and is taken for steering. Unfortunately, these rubber cuffs around the joint will rip sooner or later. Grease comes out, the bearing wears out and must be replaced.

Crack: You sense a cracking noise when steering? The culprit is easy to be found - the suspension spring. The one to two centimeters thick, springy steel wire has a tendency to break. To detect the problem, have the vehicle lifted and the tyres removed.

Rattle: A rattling sound is likely to occur when the exhaust system is loose, also when being in slight contact with another part of the car, for example loose brake pads or break calipers.

Rumble: It rumbles when you’re driving over cobblestones? Blame the coupling bar! It is supposed to stabilize the undercarriage and ensure ease in the motor compartment. What’s rumbling here are worn bearings of the coupling bar.

Scrape: It could be as easy as that - You are either dragging a branch of a tree with you that is now rubbing against your tyres, your hand brake is still on or your brake shoes are extremely worn. Have a look underneath your car first…

Squeal: Most squealing in an automobile comes from either of the two locations - the timing belts or the brakes. Belts could be slipping while brakes often squeal when either engaged in stopping or when the pads are worn to a low level and the “Warning Sensor” squeals to notify you it is time to get your brakes replaced.

Tremble: If you think there’s a trembling sensation when operating the steering wheel, it is possible that your tyres are not balanced correctly. Your workshop will take care of it with the help of a balancing machine.

Whirr: A whirring noise coming from near the gas tank could mean that the fuel pump is beginning to fail, which can be very expensive to repair. Better not let your fuel tank go below a quarter of a tank to keep the fuel pump cool and lubricated.

Don’t ignore your car’s ‘secret messages’ - it desperately wants to tell you something. Better visit your nearest workshop for clarification as it often prevents you from expensive damage.

Car TalkDon't Drive A Recalled Car. by CarmudiNG(op): 4:23pm On Oct 03, 2014
Carmudi Nigeria shares insight on the risks of purchasing recalled cars and gives advice on what to do when your car is recalled.
On the 26th of September, Ford announced a major recall of 850,000 vehicles from model years 2013 and 2014 due to a problem with the "restraints control module."

According to Ford, a short circuit could develop in the module, causing the airbag warning light to illuminate. In more severe cases, dependent on where the short develops, the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners may not work in the event of an accident. The problems can be more wide-ranging than that, too, as systems that rely on information from the control module, such as the stability control can be affected. Source: Wall Street Journal

Among the Ford brands, Ford Explorer, Escape and Ford Edge are popular Nigeria. Although only the Escape crossovers 2013/2014 are among the brands recalled by the automaker other brands like the Fusion Sedans and C-Hybirds may find their way into Nigeria.
This year also Japanese car manufacturer Toyota recalled an additional 650,000 cars Corolla, Camry Yaris and Vios.- all in Japan – in addition to those recalled last year over a defect in passenger airbags. The additional recall placed the number of the all cars recalled just over 2.79 million.
Sometimes due to ignorance or over sight many of such cars have made its way into the African auto market and eventually the Nigeria market before the recall and even after it?

It was documented that Toyota Hiace YH3 buses were recalled in Australia as a result of fire in 1990 and recently in 2012. The 1990 safety recall closed August 26, 2010, the period Nigeria started recording high Toyota Hiace crashes involving fire incidents giving proof that most of these recalled cars make their way to Nigeria.

This is an issue because just last year, the Federal Road Safety Corps again raised alarm over the high rate of Toyota related crashed and accidents and even went as far as writing to the Managing Director, Toyota Nigeria calling his attention to the high rate of crashes and fires involving Toyota automobiles. He said the study indicated that road traffic crashes involving buses had been on the increase since 2007 and that available data showed an average yearly increase of 126 crashes involving Toyota Hiace buses, representing 48 per cent of the total number of buses involved in accidents.

While that of Austria might be able to dissuade the public from purchasing the brand affected, the defect of the Japanese model may be overlooked by buyers as the defective part which "could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash" may come across as ‘not important’.But in a situation of crash, the airbags are a very important component of the car when it comes to surviving a car crash.

To avoid been stuck with a car which has been recalled it is important to do your research before you buy any car. Your research should include the possible defect, general problem of the car like transmitting issues, battery durability, electrical faults etc. It also important to have an idea of the fuel consumption of the car and how stable the car’s center of gravity is.
But if you are unlucky to buy a car that gets recalled, don’t panic. Just follow the following steps.
Understand the reason behind the recall of your car.

Inform your car dealer and take the car back to the dealership where you bought it or the nearest show room.
Complete all the necessary paper work and make sure all your car documents are complete because you have to hand this over too.
Do not sell your recalled car to any person as it may end up endangering the life of the driver and the public.

My name is Busayo and I am a member of the Eruobodo home. I was not born into this home but it has now become the only family I have. Most people look at me and see only my disability. They do not see that I am a person with dreams and aspirations. They do not notice my ability to run fast or my love for all forms of sports. In my home I am allowed to maximize my potential and it gives me the will to hope for the future. I am taught to function within my world and to be as independent as I can be. I have learnt to add my quota to my development and that of the other members of my family.

I am called Gift. At least that’s what big mummy told me and this is my home. The term orphan doesn’t apply to me anymore because I have a family in the Eruobodo house. Here I am looked after and loved. I have access to school, to books, to food and to medical care. I have a large playing ground and a little garden where I learn how to grow things. I am taught how to look after myself and help the remaining members of my family. I am also taught skills like mat weaving; barbing, carpentry and much more that will help me in the future.
The home has given us so much but we need more. We need cloths, books, teachers, food, and medicine. We need people to see us for who we are and bring hope for our future. Come visit me and my family and we will tell you our story.
Eruobodo House is currently located in Ijebu-Ode in a large bungalow provided as free-lease. In order to be more self-sufficient, fruit and vegetables are grown on the property. Money is raised through selling eggs and fish (during cat-fish season) and goats are run on the property. We also have a small stall where baskets, necklaces and cards made by the children as well as second hand goods are sold. Also present is a car wash with equipments donated by Carmudi Nigeria and a barbers shop operated by members of the home.
Day to day activities in the Home is run by the Matron and her assistants including nannies, an arts and crafts teacher, gardener and night security.

Orphans are the world’s forgotten children. They live in anonymity—feared, stigmatized, avoided, voiceless and invisible. But orphans—like all children—yearn for love and dream of bright futures for themselves. More than 153 million children in the world have lost one or both parents. Many, through no fault of their own, are destined to live out their childhoods in institutional settings or on the street, devoid of loving caregivers, sick and hungry, without dreams and without purpose.

Most affected that the children with physical and mental challenges. Because of their delicate nature and the difficulty in taking proper care of them, they are more exposed to sickness and hunger and death rejected by the normal orphanage and schools.

There is a home dedicated to taking care of these precious ones and i had the privilege of visiting this home and really at the end i was humbled and in awe of the what i saw. Stay tuned.
Car TalkThe Five Steps To Car Care WASH - Clean - Perfect - Protect –maintain by CarmudiNG(op): 12:00pm On Sep 17, 2014
Proper car care is important whether your car is brand new or ten years old. The steps are the same, although you may have to spend a little more time on an older car that requires removal of defects like oxidation, swirl or scratches.
Many think that all the steps are not necessary on a new car but your long term protection depends on properly preparing and protecting your car. You wouldn't want to put your paint sealant over bonded contamination or get a less than perfect shine, would you?

This article will help you understand the importance of each step in the five step process to care for your car, even if it is not so new anymore.

Wash - Thoroughly wash your car to remove loose dirt and grime using the proper car liquid wash solutions. Use scrub brushes and also sponge and a clean cloth while washing.

Clean – Clean your paint with detailing clay to remove bonded surface contamination that is stuck to the paint and is not removed with normal washing.
When your paint is rough, dirt and grime tend to stick and build up creating even more problems. The simple task of claying will remove the contamination and prepare your car for the polishing and protecting steps.

Polish – Remove defects in your paint, staining and enhance overall shine by polishing your car. More than likely if your car is new you won't need to remove defects unless your car has been on the lot for a while and been stricken with that dreaded swirl from poor washing procedures by the dealership. This can also be created by dealership detailers who use machine polishers incorrectly.

Protect – Protect the paint surface from harsh environmental elements and prevent premature aging with a car wax, paint protectant or paint sealant. Also get into the habit of covering your car with a car cover when you leave it for a long period of time. This will limit the harm done by weather elements and dust particles.

Maintain – Maintain your paint with normal washing and quick detailing in between washing. Make this a routine even if you feel that your car is clean and doesn’t need it.

Volvo Concept Car

Volvo's 'Your Concept Car' is a concept vehicle designed by women for women. The idea of an all-woman team making all the decisions in the development of a new concept car arose at Volvo Car in the autumn of 2001. Visiting Volvo at the time for a series of workshops was Marti Barletta, an American expert on female consumer patterns. She claimed: "If you meet the expectations of women, you exceed the expectations of men." And this has exactly been the yardstick for developing Your Concept Car.

So, next time you drive in the rain, think of Mary Anderson and thank her for windshield wipers. If you are still on the hunt for your dream car, look for it on www.carmudi.com.ng or simply download the Carmudi app to find your car on the go.

Kevlar Tires

The Polish-American inventor Stephanie Kwolek was part of a team attempting to find a fiber that was strong enough, yet lightweight for use in tires. Kwolek noticed that the polymers she was working with at the time formed liquid crystals which could be spun into fiber. In tests with tires it was found that these polymers, later named "Kevlar," would not break in situations where nylon would.

Sleeve-Valve Automobile Engine

One of the most extraordinary female inventors of the 19th century, Margaret E. Knight invented a machine that automated the production of paper bags. Although her invention was originally stolen from her she later won a patent interference lawsuit and used her winnings from this case to found the Eastern Paper Bag Co. Knight was a major contributor to the evolution of the rotary engine, patenting a number of its components and improvements, including the sleeve-valve automobile engine.

Signal & Brake Lights

Turn signals and brake lights are 2 of the most indispensable inventions in car history. Silent film star Florence Lawrence invented them in 1913. Her “auto signaling arm” was a device which, when the driver pressed a button, would raise or lower an arm with an attached sign that indicated the direction of the turn. The brake signal used the same idea, but with a “stop” sign attached. Unfortunately, she never patented her ideas and so received no credit when others in the auto industry copied her.

Women inventors in the automotive industry have not just made driving in the rain possible

There is plenty of prejudice against women and cars, often initiated by their male counterpart wink: complains like they cannot parallel park; they have no spatial awareness and they only use their rear view mirror to put on makeup. If you think there’s any truth in these theories, then you’d be surprised to know how much the automotive industry owes to women in developing the wonderful machines we drive today. Carmudi, the leading car website for buying and selling vehicles, sheds light on some significant parts and designs of the car that have been invented by women

Windshield Wipers

It was Mary Anderson, who was granted a patent for the windshield wiper in 1903.The first windshield wiper was a swinging arm with a rubber blade that could be operated manually by a lever inside the car, similar to what we use today. She tried to sell the rights in 1905 but was rejected by a Canadian firm that claimed it was “not of such commercial use as would warrant the undertaking of its sale.” Even today, windshield wipers operate on the same basic design that Anderson created.

Car TalkFemale Motor-gene!! Women Take A Bow! by CarmudiNG(op): 12:02pm On Sep 08, 2014

Car TalkDid The Ordinary Inspire Luxury? by CarmudiNG(op): 1:30pm On Sep 05, 2014
Have you ever taken a close look at some features of cars we term ‘ordinary’? It seems like presently ordinary features are either refashioned to fit into luxury cars or just added to the luxury car without any form or remodeling. A good example is the rear light of the Volkswagen lT35 produced between 1989 and 1993. Ever noticed that it’s exactly the same as the Hummer 2 rear lights produced in 2002? Yes it is. Now is this due to lack of creativity on the part of the Hummer manufacturers keeping in mind the production dates or did the manufacturers decide that this particular rear light would complement the luxury Hummer 2. Don’t believe me? Take a look.

Another example is the rear light of the Toyota Tundra 2012. Now it is exactly the same with the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2012 only inverted.

Most people will argue that they are both Toyota product but they are different models and the Land Cruiser Prado can be called a Luxury SUV while the Tundra is a rugged pickup. Did the manufactures decide to save their ideas for another set of cars or were they making sure that both models can easily have their rear lights replaced. Your guess is as good as mine.

AutosSay It: Land Rover Range Rover Sport by CarmudiNG(op): 4:26pm On Sep 02, 2014

Land Rover has been around since 1948, a British marque that took inspiration from Word War II “jeep” models produced by Willys and the Ford Motor Company. Range Rover was rolled out in 1970 to represent the flagship model for Land Rover. Today, there are three lines of Range Rover models, including the Range Rover Sport.

The Range Rover Sport was introduced for the 2006 model year. It was based on the Land Rover Discovery/LR3 and was marked by a flat grille, broad shoulders and a square roof line. As such, it was a good model, but it didn’t quite live up to what its competitors were offering.

Eight years later, the second generation Range Rover Sport was released. This time, Land Rover tapped the flagship Range Rover platform to produce the new model. The current iteration is still imposing, but is much more aerodynamic and lives up to its “Sport” name. That’s especially apparent in the roof line that sweeps from the A to the D pillar, providing an “in motion” look.

This model is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine making 340 horsepower and paired with a sequential shift 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel Cell Cars
Target group: Those who get dehydrated whilst driving

USP: Produces water as waste

These types of cars are seen as the solution to the environmentally damaging combustion-engined vehicles and expensive electricity-powered cars. These vehicles produce water as a byproduct and are said to be capable of long range driving, according to Samuelsen. However, there is not a high number of charging stations readily available across different locations to make them practical and the large batteries take up trunk space. Modifications are underway to make these things no longer a problem.

However, whilst we’re still in the present, find your perfect vehicle on www.carmudi.com or simply download the Carmudi app to find your car on the go.
