Nairaland / General / The United States President Donald Trump To Buhari As 'lifeless' - Financial Tim by casmir66(m): 10:36am On Aug 27, 2018
The United States president Donald Trump referred to his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari as “lifeless” shortly after a meeting between the two leaders on April 30, Financial Times said on Monday.

Buhari, the first sub-Saharan Africa president to meet Trump since he was sworn in January 2017 as the 45th American president, was in the US for bilateral talks on Trump’s invitation.

That meeting ended with Trump saying he never wanted to meet someone as lifeless as Buhari again, Financial Times reported citing three persons familiar with the matter.

American and Nigerian governments have not reacted to the publication published on the same day Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta will be at the White House.

This new narrative is a contrast to what Trump said of Buhari at a joint press briefing held after their bilateral talks.

Trump said he had in implicit belief in the Nigerian president to rein in the “massive corruption” in the country and commended his efforts at doing that.

“Nigeria has a reputation for very massive corruption. I also know that the President has been able to cut that down very substantially,” Trump said.

“We talked about that, he is working on it and they have made a lot of progress and I think they will continue to make a lot of progress.”

Nairaland / General / I've Killed Three Persons Since My Initiation - Notorious Imo Cultist, 'ogbotiti by casmir66(m): 10:00am On Aug 27, 2018
An alleged notorious cultist and killer identified as Chijioke Ogbonna, popularly known as Ogbotiti, has been arrested by officials of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Imo State.

According to a report by PUNCH Metro, while being paraded by the police last Saturday, Ogbotiti, told reporters that he had killed three persons since he was initiated into the confraternity in 2014.

The 23-year-old undergraduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, said his resolve to seek revenge led him into killing three persons, one of whom was a member of a rival cult group, adding that his main weapon was a locally-made gun.

While speaking to correspondents, the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Andrew Enwerem, described the suspect as a deadly cultist and armed robber, adding that Ogbotiti was nabbed by F-SARS operatives on August 19 at Ama-Hausa in the Owerri Municipal area of the state capital.

Nairaland / General / How Banks Make Free Money – CBN Governor by casmir66(m): 9:51am On Aug 27, 2018
Although this writer has, since 2004 consistently condemned this obvious rip-off, in several articles, in retrospect, Sanusi had inexplicably remained silent, while First Bank Plc, probably, Nigeria’s largest bank, where he earlier served as a Director, was possibly the major beneficiary of this scam in public finance.

The above title “How Banks make Free Money from Government Funds” was first published barely a week, after the key decisions made at CBN’s MPC No. 90 of 22/23 July 2013, were announced. Notably, however, the question still remains, whether or not the oppressive, financial absurdity, which Sanusi condemned still prevails? A summary of that article follows, hereafter; please read on.

“…First of all, you have got liquidity surplus in the banking industry; … there is over N1.3tn or so sitting in banks and belonging to government agencies. Now basically, they (these funds) are at zero percent interest and the banks are lending about N2tn to the government and charging 13 to 14%!. Now, that is a very good business model, isn’t it? Give me your money for free and I lend it to you at 14%; so why would I go and lend to anyone?”

Nairaland / General / Matibabu: A New Device In The Fight Against Malaria by casmir66(m): 10:53am On Aug 23, 2018
It is no news that malaria kills thousands of people in Africa alone every year. Problems faced in the fight against malaria include not only medication, access to immediate treatment or extermination of mosquitoes, but also quick detection and diagnosis.

26-year-old Brian Gitta from Uganda has developed a device called Matibabu meaning “treatment” in Swahili. This device was developed in collaboration with other graduates with skills in engineering, computer sciences and infectious diseases.

This device is noninvasive and can detect malaria quickly without drawing blood from the patient. The inspiration for creating this device came after Gitta suffered bouts of malaria. While at the hospital for treatment, he imagined a way malaria could be diagnosed with little time and without the invasive use of needles.

According to the BBC, the machine uses magnets and a custom-made device called a matiscope which shines a red beam of light on the user’s finger, detecting a substance called haemozoin crystals, the byproduct of the malaria parasite.

Nairaland / General / Amnesty : Return Our Guns Within 21 Days Or…, Ex-militants Tell Ondo Govt by casmir66(m): 10:18am On Aug 23, 2018
AKURE—FORMER militants in the riverine areas of Ondo State, yesterday, issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Ondo State government to return their guns and ammunition collected under the guise of incorporating them in the Amnesty Programme of the Federal Government last year. Militants during the submission of arms and ammunitions in Ondo

This was as no fewer than 61 ex-agitators in the Niger Delta region alleged diversion of their stipends by the amnesty office and calling on the House of Representatives to investigate the alleged fraud.
No fewer than 2,000 ex-militants were asked to surrender their arms and ammunition in Ondo State following the intervention of the state government which then promised that they would be incorporated into the Amnesty programme.

For reneging on the promise and alleged deceit by the state government since November last year, the former militants declared the riverine communities of the state a no-go area for the 2019 electioneering campaign.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved former militants in Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas of Ondo State, General Ogailo Ibory said: “We are saying this because if at the end of the 21 days the government does not return our guns they deceived us to take, we will hold the entire riverine areas of Ondo, Ogun and Lagos states to ransom.

“Especially for Ondo State, no one should come to the riverine areas for any electioneering campaign. We are prepared for the worst.” Ibory said: “We are issuing this statement because we are tired of the unfulfilled promises of the Ondo State Government that collected our guns since last year without any effort to make us benefit from the Amnesty Programme of the Federal Government.

Nairaland / General / ASUU Flays Neglect Of LAUTECH, Warns Against Its Commercialization by casmir66(m): 10:39am On Aug 22, 2018
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar zone, has condemned the deplorable state of affairs at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho. Zonal Coordinator of the union, Dr. Aniekan Brown, told newsmen in Calabar yesterday that ASUU would not allow co-owners of the school, Oyo and Osun states, to abdicate its funding. The union warned against allowing the school to drift towards commercialisation.

He said: “This is all because the university has become entirely dependent on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for survival, the impact of which is on the students and their parents. “They have been compelled to pay outrageously high and unaffordable fees, in the face of the present precarious economic situation.

This is unacceptable and should be dutifully rejected.” ASUU chairmen in the zone who attended the meeting were those of the University of Calabar, Dr. Tony Eyang, University of Uyo, Dr. Daniel Udo, and Akwa Ibom State University, Dr. Imeh Okop.

Nairaland / General / Graphic Photos: See How Nigerian Yahoo Boy In Lagos Attempts To Kill His Mother by casmir66(m): 1:11pm On Aug 20, 2018
The police in Lagos state have arrested 29 year old Taiwo Akinola pictured above for trying to kill his mother, Alice Akinola so as to further his cyber fraud business ( yahoo.com) to the bloody or ritual level (yahoo plus).
A statement by the police command spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, says Taiwo who lives with his mother at No.2 Raji Ajanaku street, Alaja Road, Ayobo, Lagos, is a staunch member of the notorious Aiye confraternity.
At about 8am yesterday Sunday August 19th, Taiwo went to his mother's provision store in front of their apartment and told her to meet him inside the house for an important discussion and at same time sent his nephew, Faruk to go buy him a white handkerchief and a stick of cigarette.
As soon as his mother entered the house, the suspect attacked her, smashing her head with a plank, pressing iron and a UPS charger to ensure she didn't survive the ferocious attack.
When Faruk returned from the errand, he didn't see his grandmother in the shop so he went into the house only to see the poor woman lying in a pool of blood. Shocked by what he saw, the small boy raised the alarm which attracted neighbours to the scene.

Education / New York University Makes Tuition Free For All Medical Students by casmir66(m): 10:26am On Aug 17, 2018
New York University said Thursday it would offer all its current and future medical school students free tuition in an effort to tackle soaring debt levels and encourage more applicants.

The move — which it said was financed by the generosity of the university’s “trustees, alumni, and friends,” amounts to a reduction of $55,018 in annual fees, regardless of financial needs or academic merit.

It does not cover living and administrative costs averaging $27,000 a year.

“A population as diverse as ours is best served by doctors from all walks of life, we believe, and aspiring physicians and surgeons should not be prevented from pursuing a career in medicine because of the prospect of overwhelming financial debt,” said Dr Robert Grossman, dean of the NYU School of Medicine.

Sports / Barcelona’s Marlon Completes Move To Sassuolo by casmir66(m): 10:07am On Aug 17, 2018
Barcelona and Brazil defender Marlon completed a move to Serie A side Sassuolo Thursday on the eve of the closure of the transfer window in Italy.

The 23-year-old underwent a medical with the side from Modena agreeing a five-year deal worth 12 million euros ($13.6 million).

Sassuolo will pay six million euros now and a further six million more if the Brazilian plays 50 games for the club with the Catalan giants retaining a buy-back option and 50 per cent of any future fee.

The former Brazil Under-20 international, who spent last season on loan at Nice, could make his Serie A debut at home to Inter this Sunday.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina joined Napoli with Villarreal’s Samu Castillejo and Genoa’s Diego Laxalt completing medicals at AC Milan among a late flurry of action before the transfer deadline.

Colombian international Ospina’s arrival comes amid criticism from fans at the lack of spending by new coach Carlo Ancelotti’s Serie A runners-up compared to champions Juventus who splashed out 100 million euro ($117 million) to bring Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to Turin.

There are fears slim pickings including goalkeeper Alex Meret, midfielder Fabian Ruiz and forward Simone Verdi may not be enough for Napoli to keep pace with rivals Juventus, Inter and AC Milan.

Juventus top the summer spending with 235 million euros ($265 million) invested in new players — more than double rivals AS Roma and Napoli — as Serie A clubs have already spent more than a billion euros, second among the top five European leagues behind the big-spending English Premier League.

With the transfer window slamming shut in Italy at 8:00pm (1800 GMT) on Friday, Serie A teams have time to overtake the 1.037 billion euros spent last summer.
