Project Ara is one of the more interesting and ambitious things we've seen come out of Google in the mobile arena in some time. The basic idea is a smartphone-like device, but one that has swappable components that can be changed out simply to either improve the experience of the device or add new features. Cameras, batteries and sensors can be added at will to a Project Ara phone without changing how the device works otherwise.



Right now, things are still very early for Project Ara. Google has begun a consumer trial of the phones and components in Puerto Rico, but beyond that is still recruiting manufacturers to make new modules and getting a feel for how consumers will react to the idea of an easily-upgradeable phone. There's a target "entry" price of $50 for Project Ara devices, which is pretty ambitious.
We're not sure if Project Ara will end up taking the world by storm, but we are sure that it's something we will be keeping an eye on. It's expected to launch in 2017.

I wonder if the swappable parts can be made by different developers, the way the Nexus phones are done. If so, I'd like to see
- the L series battery from Tecno
- S7/iPhone 6 camera
- maybe even a camera from a camera brand, such as Nikon
- sensors from Huawei or LG

Wetin make tech guys dey do? If its that detachable then pple will just go to market and get parts and make there own phones. Tecno w4 os, c9 camera, samsung jelly screen, l8 battery, j8 headset etc.

I never said using plastic on a phone is a bad thing. Plastic also has its advantage as it increases the durability and reduces how slippery a phone would be.
Samsung and LG have always used plastic on their phones until recently and they were sold as premium. But saying plastic is right for Nigeria because of power issue is not a valid point, I just do not understand can u explain?
And saying pc makers are excluding metals in their design is absurd, show me a mcbook that is made out of plastic, or hp probook, microsoft surface, etc are all made of metal body. Just put it that high end PC's are mostly made of metal, if plastic is used it is to reduce the cost and not because of power issues.

Maybe many can't afford especially due to our economic higgyhaga but D price is not expensive. Love the C9 camera increased angle. With a selfie stick #CaptureTheWorld

Cool device. What seems wrong with the iris scanner? That's like a dope way of securing your phone. You can still always use other forms of lock too.

I have htc sensation and an old tecno p3 and still doing awesome. Use d htc for almost everything esp etertaiment. But the p3 is always there even when nepa fails.

This t-band of a thing is quite lovely too. They said if you pre order the c9 you could get one free. OP that true?
