The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has amplified the narrative about Seyi Tinubu, President Bola Tinubu’s son to become the next Governor of Lagos State. Conversations about Seyi succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu started late last year when a socio-political organisation, Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) endorsed him for the number one political office in the state. Speaking in an interview with Seun Okinbaloye, Olawande, who described Seyi as his leader and mentor, said the president’s son has the capacity to lead Lagos State. The minister argued that Seyi is not too young to be a governor, adding that he is (Seyi) a well-trained young man, who has supported and elevated many young Nigerians even when his father was not the president. “He is not too young to become a governor, that’s the truth, adding that Seyi is qualified to become the next Lagos State Governor. He is a well trained youngman that has built a lot of young people, massive young people even when his father is not the president,” Olawande said. The minister, however, claimed Seyi has nothing to do with the endorsement by groups campaigning for him to become a governor. Olawande said, “Seyi is not the one engineering the campaign to become the next governor of Lagos State.” “Everybody has tendency to become whatever he/she wants to become… This is what I’ve understand (sic) too, when you are outside there or you’re popular or you have one or two things to do, people would say a lot of things about you.” Meanwhile, since the campaign for him to succeed Sanwo-Olu started in 2024, the president’s son has neither confirmed nor denied having a political ambition ahead of the 2027 general election. © 2025 Vanguard Media Limited, Nigeria |
Mindlog:The government has the financial might to do this but refused because they didn't want these children to be educated and enlightened. |
It seem to me that the government and elite in the north encourages the alimagiri system,so that the children will not grow up and ask them questions or to be accountable for the homonguous money they've looted for decades without anything to show. It was even a southern president that built alimagiri schools in all the northern states, their leaders doesn't care a bit |

budaatum:I agree with you because you can't see this alimagiri system in other Islamic states. It is only practiced in Nigeria, ostensibly because of the high rate of poverty and that of polygamy and bearing children they cannot fend for. |

Nigeria's largest city have begun evacuating more than 5,000 street children seen as a "security threat" and a growing concern as an economic crisis forces more to fend for themselves. The Hisbah, a regional police force tasked with enforcing Islamic Sharia law, have carried out midnight raids on motor parks, markets and street corners in the regional capital, Kano, since the beginning of the year, evacuating children as they sleep. "We have so far mopped up 300 of these boys from the streets and taken them into a camp provided for their rehabilitation," Hisbah's director-general Abba Sufi told AFP. "Their continued living on the streets is a huge social and security threat because they are potential criminal recruits." "They are a ticking time bomb that needs to be urgently defused with tact and care," said Sufi. In November, Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf set up a committee to rid the city of the street children, most of whom are boys. Many sleep in the open and have no access to education or parental care. With the highest divorce rate in Nigeria, according to official figures, Kano is dealing with a surge in children from broken homes. Largely left to fend for themselves, the boys roam the city, begging, selling items at traffic lights and scavenging for scrap metal to sell to get money to feed themselves. The west African economic powerhouse faces its worst economic crisis in decades, with inflation soaring to 34.6 percent in November, leaving many struggling to eat. Nigeria has 18.5 million out-of-school children, with Kano State accounting for 1.9 million, the highest rate in the country, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in a 2022 survey. The Kano figure accounts for 39% of the total number of children living in the state, the 2022 Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty survey said. "Some of them are from Kano, while others are from other states," said Hisbah commander Aminu Daurawa. "The first step is profiling them and identifying where they came from." Some were sent from villages to learn how to read the Koran at informal Islamic religious schools called almajiri. Residents said many students of the Koranic schools beg for food and alms between classes. Attempts by authorities and local groups to intervene and support the age-old almajiri system have faced opposition from traditional clerics. The Hisbah police plan to provide "psychosocial" support and counselling to the children before enrolling those who show interest in school, Sufi said, adding that others will be given seed money to start a trade of their choice. Daurawa told AFP that out-of-state children will be repatriated after their rehabilitation. Previous attempts to clear the city of street children have failed. Between 2017 and 2018, the Hisbah evacuated some 26,000 children and reunited them with their parents in and outside Kano, but they returned to the streets after a lull, according to Daurawa. During the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities in Kano shut almajiri schools and transported the pupils to their states, but they returned when the schools reopened. "We want to avoid a repeat of the past experience, which is why we changed approach by camping the children and rehabilitating them before sending them back into the society," Sufi said. Northern Nigeria is on fire from bandits attack. The monster they used against Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration is now hydra headed and is now hunting the whole region. It is now an herculean task for the government and people to tame the monster. |
Labour Party Caretaker Committee has said the party will hold the All Progressives Congress (APC), and its spokesperson, Felix Morka, responsible if any harm befalls Mr Peter Obi or his associates. The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, in a statement issued on Thursday, expressed concern at the recent incendiary remarks made by Morka, during his appearance on national television on January 5. Usman said such inflammatory rhetoric has no place in the nation’s democracy, adding, “It undermines national unity, discourages productive political discourse, and endangers lives.” According to her, the statement not only poses a direct threat to the life, reputation, and business interests of Mr. Peter Obi but also constitutes an affront to the principles of democracy, decency, and responsible political engagement. “Mr. Peter Obi, a man of impeccable character, has devoted his life to the service of Nigeria and the pursuit of good governance. “He has consistently demonstrated that competence, merit, and respect for the rule of law should guide leadership. “To attack him with baseless allegations and threats is an indication of the APC’s inability to engage constructively on the issues that matter to Nigerians,” she stated. Senator Usman reminded Morka and the APC that words have consequences, and called on security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that those who use public platforms to incite violence or issue veiled threats are held to account. “Political leaders must rise above pettiness and focus on addressing the pressing challenges facing our nation, including insecurity, unemployment, and economic instability,” Senator Usman advised. The LP caretaker committee Chairman assured that the party remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the values of transparency, justice, and inclusion. “We will not be cowed or distracted by threats or intimidation. “Mr. Peter Obi represents hope and progress for millions of Nigerians, and we will continue to stand by him in his pursuit of a better Nigeria,” she added. Senator Usman called of the APC to immediately issue a public apology to Mr Peter Obi and retract the offensive statements made by its National Publicity Secretary. “Anything less would be a tacit endorsement of such reckless and dangerous behaviour. “As leaders, we owe it to Nigerians to promote peace, unity, and responsible political dialogue. “Let us not forget that the true measure of leadership lies in how we treat one another, even in the face of disagreement,” she advised. © 2024 All right reserved.
