wunmi590: Good afternoon Nairalanders,
Despite the hard economy, I decided to make it a challenge to save some small extra change I see from my side hussle from May 2024 - December 2024.
This is what i was aable to save in my piggy 🐷 bank
1. N500 note (N47,000) 2. N1,000 note (N35,000)
Total is N82,000.
I had to make sure I look for the new note because I don't want to hear stories that the old note have been ban from usage... you tried, but this is a primitive and risky way of saving money, when next you want to start saving again, open an account with any online bank like, opay, moneipoint or Palm pay and use it for the purpose. |

Politics › Tinubu Named Finalist In Occrp's 2024 Corruption List by Celestialsword(op): 4:01pm On Jan 01, 2025 |
President Bola Tinubu has been named a finalist for the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project’s (OCCRP) 2024 “Corrupt Person of the Year” award. Established in 2012, this annual recognition spotlights individuals linked to significant corruption or organized crime activities.
According to the OCCRP, Tinubu’s nomination was supported by journalists, readers, and judges within its global network. In 2023, an OCCRP investigation revealed that Tinubu was connected to 20 properties in the UK purchased by his associates during his tenure as Lagos State governor.
Seventeen of these properties were acquired by Oladipo Eludoyin, a close associate and director of Aranda Overseas Corp., between 2004 and 2007.
The report also linked Tinubu’s son, Seyi, to Aranda Overseas Corp., which purchased a $10.8 million property under investigation by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Additionally, the OCCRP cited past allegations of Tinubu’s involvement in money laundering during the 1990s and his forfeiture of $460,000 to the US government in a narcotics-related case.
Tinubu has consistently denied these allegations and emphasized the need for African leaders to address corruption and economic challenges collaboratively.
Alongside Tinubu, Kenyan President William Ruto was also named a finalist, with many expressing frustration over his administration’s alleged corruption.
The OCCRP awarded a special “Lifetime Non-Achievement Award” to Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Mbasogo, citing decades of resource mismanagement and lavish spending.
The 2024 “Corrupt Person of the Year” title went to ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for his role in leading Syria’s Captagon drug trade, which has fueled his authoritarian regime.
Past winners of the OCCRP title include Russian President Vladimir Putin, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and Guatemala’s Attorney General María Consuelo Porras.

gaj40393: Good day everyone, it is with tension and fast heartbeat that I use in writing this as I find myself entangled with the addiction of sports betting and huge dept. I am a fresh graduate who just finished my NYSC and I am still looking for a job. As I have no job yet, I find it hard to run my day to day activities and settle little bills because I currently have no source of income.
I decided to borrow money from these loan apps and play bet with it, with the hope of paying back after winning, little did I know that was the begging of my tears and tension. I borrowed a sum of 100k first, played a bet with it and lost it. In other to recover that back I borrowed another 200k and also lost it, to recover both back, I borrowed a whole 350k and also lost it, I thank God my limit was up so I couldn't borrow any more, maybe I would have even kept borrowing and playing. Now I owe a huge sum of almost 800k ( interest included) to pay before 31st of January.
Currently I am in shambles, I have lost everything and have learnt the hard way. I now know that betting wouldn't get you anywhere and it is only meant to ruin lives. I am now in huge dept that I don't even know how to raise that money before that time, I can't even involve my families because it will be a huge disgrace to me.
Please Nairalanders, I welcome any insults you are willing to throw at me, I need advise and opinions on how to go about this, I am in complete breakdown and your advise will go a long way for me. I also need advise on how I can be able to source for funds and also how I can get a job that will at least get me going. I am an intelligent person that can do lots of task but was just very foolish enough to go the wrong way. As I said, I welcome your insults, thank you. You have to take responsibility for your actions. The day you stop betting, know that you've already won millions by your actions |

Christianity Etc › Catholic Priest In Belarus Sentenced To 11 Years As Crackdown Tightenns by Celestialsword(op): 1:25pm On Jan 01, 2025 |
A Catholic priest in Belarus on Monday was convicted on charges of high treason for criticising the government and handed an 11-year sentence, in the first case of politically-driven charges against Catholic clergy since Belarus became independent after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
The conviction and sentencing of Rev. Henrykh Akalatovich comes as Belarusian authorities have intensified their sweeping crackdown on dissent ahead of the Jan. 26 presidential election that is all but certain to hand authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko a seventh term in office.
The Viasna Human Rights Centre said Akalatovich, 64, rejected the treason charges. The group has listed him among 1,265 political prisoners in the country.
“For the first time since the fall of the Communist regime, a Catholic priest in Belarus was convicted on criminal charges that are levelled against political prisoners,” said Viasna's representative Pavel Sapelka. “The harsh sentence is intended to intimidate and silence hundreds of other priests ahead of January's presidential election.”
Akalatovich, who has been in custody since November 2023, was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery just before his arrest. The priest from the town of Valozhyn in western Belarus, who was critical of the government in his sermons, has been held incommunicado, with prison officials turning down warm clothing and food sent to him.
Arkatovich is among dozens of clergy — Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant — who have been jailed, silenced or forced into exile for protesting the 2020 election that gave Lukashenko a sixth term. The disputed vote that the opposition and the West said was marred with fraud triggered mass protests,. The authorities then responded with a sweeping crackdown that saw more than 65,000 arrested and thousands beaten by police.
Catholic and Protestant clergy who supported the protests and sheltered demonstrators at their churches were particularly targeted by repressions. Belarusian authorities openly seek to bring the clergy into line, repeatedly summoning them for “preventive” political talks, checking websites and social media, and having security services monitor sermons.
While Orthodox Christians make up about 80% of the population, just under 14% are Catholic and 2% are Protestants.
Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for nearly 30 years and describes himself as an “Orthodox atheist,” lashed out at dissident clergy during the 2020 protests, urging them to “do their jobs,” and not fuel unrest.
Lukashenko is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies, allowing Russia to use his country’s territory to send troops into Ukraine in February 2022 and to deploy some of its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

Politics › I Faked Missing ₦180m As A Social Media Experiment - VeryDarkMan by Celestialsword(op): 6:01am On Jan 01, 2025 |
Controversial social media activist Martin Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan has admitted to in fabricating the story of ₦180 million allegedly missing from his NGO’s account.
According to him, the false story was an experiment to highlight how Nigerians readily believe and spread unverified information on social media.
In a video posted on his Instagram account, VeryDarkMan addressed the backlash and revealed the rationale behind the stunt.
“Alright, since the ₦180 million naira missing from the NGO account, I have been seeing a lot of comments that I never expected,” he said. “But I really want to thank God because everything I have done on this social media, I have done it because this is who I am. I did not do it to seek public validation.”
The activist, known for using his platform to advocate for victims of scams and raise awareness about fraud, expressed frustration over the insults he received. He explained how people vilified him without critical thought.
“I saw all those comments, and I asked myself, what is my offence? All I do on social media is to advocate, help people collect back their money, and create awareness so people won’t be scammed. Most times, I even put my money into these efforts, sometimes borrowing, because I want Nigeria to be a place where people have a voice,” he stated.
“Some people were even insulting my mother, calling her a thief,” he added.
VeryDarkMan condemned how quickly social media users jumped to conclusions without analysing the situation.
He declared, “You know 80% of the people that use social media are stupid, right? This whole thing that happened is a clear opportunity to show you. I deliberately did it to show you people that you are stupid.”
He questioned why no one scrutinised the story. “We are in a country where anything said on social media, nobody bothers to check, nobody bothers to investigate. Everybody starts sharing, they start running away with it. They don’t even waste time to listen; they just want to comment.”
Mocking the way the false narrative spread, he continued, “Boom! They just want to comment: ‘₦180 million is missing, VeryDarkMan is a thief.’ Nobody sat down to analyze, ‘Wait, the VeryDarkMan we know—if ₦180 million is missing from his NGO account, will he be going to Jos instead of Abuja where the police, EFCC, and cybercrime headquarters are located?’ What is he going to do in Jos?”
The activist went further to criticise the culture of misinformation on social media, comparing his fabricated story to other unverified claims.
“The whole media has been spoilt, has been ruined. That’s why one man from Niger came recently and said the French government gave Tinubu money to open a military base in the North East. Nobody sat down to ask, ‘Did this man present any evidence? Did he show a video or proof of the foundation being laid?’ He just said it, and boom, that’s it!”
Reiterating his point, VeryDarkMan declared, “80% of you on social media are very, very stupid.”
The activist’s revelation sparked widespread debate about his approach. While some supported his message about digital literacy, others have criticised his approach as deceptive and manipulative. https://leadership.ng/i-faked-missing-n180m-to-experiment-social-media-reaction-verydarkman/
