PoliticsKano Police Bans Durbar Activities During Sallah Festivities by Celestialsword(op): 11:19am On Jun 14, 2024
The Kano State Police Command has issued an order banning all Durbar activities throughout the State for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) celebrations as part of enhanced security measures to ensure public safety and peace in the State during the festive period.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Command said the ban on Durbar activities, a significant traditional events post-Eid-el-Kabir, followed extensive security reports and consultations with relevant stakeholders.

“This measure is taken as a result of series of security reports obtained and wide consultations made with relevant security stakeholders to ensure the safety of the larger community,” the Command explained.

This is the first time the durbar has been cancelled since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The three-day durbar is the largest festival in the state with a splendid display of horseback riding and cultural activities that always draw a large crowd from within and outside Kano State.

Despite the restriction on Durbar activities, the Command has, however, advised worshippers to proceed with their Eid prayers at designated Eid prayer grounds as done in previous years

“Worshippers are advised to conduct their normal Eid Prayers at the various designated Eid praying grounds, traditionally done in the past,” the statement noted.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Station.

The statement emphasised the importance of continued collaboration and cooperation from all stakeholders to maintain a secure environment.

“Adequate security deployments have been put in place to ensure no breakdown of law and order in all parts of the State before, during, and after the festive period,” the statement assured.

LEADERSHIP reports that the latest development comes on the backdrop of a request by the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to the State’s Police Command, asking for special security arrangements for him to host the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festivities in Kano Emirate in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police dated June 10, 2024.

Bayero was dethroned by the Kano State government about three weeks ago, and in his place, the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was reinstated by Governor Abba Yusuf. The former has, however, refused to let go and continued to lay claim to the Kano throne from a mini palace in the commercial city, a development that has put Kano on the edge ever since.

Both Sanusi II and Bayero have continued to hold courts and conduct ceremonial activities from their separate palaces in the state amid a legal tussle to outdo each other.

PoliticsInvestors Pullout Looms For 20 Modular Refineries Over Crude Supply by Celestialsword(op):
Enforcing domestic crude obligations critical to modular refineries’ success

Funding for the construction of 20 modular refineries in Nigeria is at risk as foreign investors withhold their money due to a lack of guaranteed crude oil supply for the facilities.

These modular refineries, aimed at boosting domestic refining capacity, are facing a major hurdle.

International oil companies, the primary source of crude oil in Nigeria, are hesitant to provide guarantees that crude will be available to the refineries once operational.

According to operators of the modular refineries, only five out of the planned 20 are currently functioning.

The remaining 15, at various stages of completion or with licenses secured, are facing financial roadblocks due to the crude supply uncertainty.

“Investors are demanding a certain level of assurance before they release funds for construction,” said a representative of the refinery operators.

“Without a guarantee of crude oil, they are hesitant to move forward.”

According to Eche Idoko, publicity secretary, Crude Oil Refinery Owners Association of Nigeria, only about five of our members have completed their refineries. The others are having a major challenge. This challenge is that the people who are supposed to finance them have not disbursed financing for construction because they want some level of guarantee.

“A guarantee that if they finish the refinery, they are going to get feedstock, which, of course, is crude oil,” Idoko said.

CORAN is a registered association of modular and conventional refinery companies in Nigeria. Modular refineries are simplified refineries that require significantly less capital investment than traditional full-scale refineries.

Speaking further, Idoko said, “When we approached the regulator, it said it cannot give us that kind of guarantee, this was before the Petroleum Industry Act became implemented. It cannot give us a guarantee because it thinks we will take the feedstock to sell and will not build the refineries.

“This, for us, is neither here nor there, because what the financiers were asking for is not that you should supply them the crude, but that we should be able to give them what we call a Conditional Term Sheet and Heads of Terms. And this means that when you finish your refinery as an investor, you will be supplied feedstock.”

The CORAN official said this is the reason why most modular refineries in Nigeria have yet to be completed, adding that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission should impress it on IOCs to provide these guarantees.

He said modular refiners as well as some downstream operators in the sector have repeatedly called on the regulator to mandate the international oil companies to supply crude to indigenous refiners first before exporting the commodity.

“What was done before now is that the regulators would write, quoting Section 109 of the PIA, which talks about the fact that crude oil will be supplied after mechanical completion of the refinery.

The financial houses know that the regulators do not own crude and don’t produce the commodity, but they want to see something from your suppliers that when you finish your refinery, they are going to give you crude under some clearly specified terms.

“But we have not been able to get the regulators to see reasons and impress it upon these IOCs to give us this kind of documents. So what we have received from them is that the guidelines state that they can supply crude when the refinery is at least operating at 50 per cent,” Idoko stated.

The CORAN official added, “This means you are saying the refinery is already completed and is running at 50 per cent capacity. We want the refineries to take off, and so our plea is that the regulator should impress it upon these IOCs to give us the guarantee, which is the Conditional Term Sheet.

“At the end of the day you are not doing it for the refineries, rather you are doing it for the country. You see what recently happened, diesel was trading for N1,700/litre, but the moment Dangote refinery dropped it to N1,200/litre, the price fell to N1,200.”

He explained that when modular refineries join forces with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Nigeria would be an oil refining hub in West Africa, as about 70 per cent of refined petroleum products consumed on the sub-continent are imported.

“I can tell you that in terms of the demand/supply gap for refined petroleum products in West Africa, the continent is short by about 70 per cent in terms of what it needs. So 70 per cent of what the whole of West Africa consumes is imported.

“So what we are saying is that let us make Nigeria a refining hub and make this country the giant of Africa once again. Let all other African countries start coming here to buy refined petroleum products from us.

In fact, Dangote refinery now appreciates what we are doing and is making a move to become a full member of our association. They have made enquiries, they want to collect forms and become a full member of our association,” Idoko stated.

PoliticsPaying Subsidies, Lying About It Nothing To Brag About -atiku Hits Tinubu by Celestialsword(op): 8:21am On Jun 06, 2024
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says it’s deceptive for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to claim to have abolished fuel subsidy while expenditure on fuel subsidy may reach N5.4 trillion in 2024, compared to the N3.6 trillion spent in 2023.

Atiku said he was shocked to learn that the government under Tinubu is still supporting downstream consumption.

In a statement on his X handle on Wednesday, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate said the government paying subsidies and lying about it is nothing to brag about, stressing that Nigerians deserve better than deception.

He said: “President Bola Tinubu, at his inauguration on May 29, 2023, announced the abolishment of the subsidy on PMS, popularly known as fuel.

“Ever since, it has been a bragging right of Tinubu and officials of his administration.

“I had in my statement reviewing the one year of the Bola Tinubu administration, urged the government to come clean on the actual position of the subsidy policy.

“These were my exact words: “…provide clarity on the fuel subsidy regime, including the fiscal commitments and benefits from the fuel subsidy reform and the impact of this on the Federation Accounts. It is curious that since April 2024, fuel queues have mounted at many filling stations across Nigeria, and the infamous ‘black market’ has sprouted in several states. How much PMS is being imported and distributed, and at what cost? What is the implicit subsidy?”

“If the subsidy regime had been characterised by opaqueness, what would we say of a situation where the subsidy is still being paid undercover without Nigerians in the know?

“Like millions of Nigerians, I was shocked to learn through media reports that the “government is still supporting downstream consumption.”

“Now we know that expenditure on fuel subsidy may reach N5.4 trillion in 2024, compared to the N3.6 trillion spent in 2023, the same year that Tinubu claimed to have abolished fuel subsidy.

“I wish to restate that Nigeria is not working, and what we have had in a little over a year is a cocktail of trial-and-error economic policies. Paying subsidies and lying about it is nothing to brag about. Nigerians deserve better than this deception.”

SportsSuper Eagles Players Stranded In Lagos by Celestialsword(op): 7:44am On Jun 04, 2024
Eight Super Eagles players are stranded at Lagos and Abuja following the shut down of airports in the country by labour unions as part of the nationwide strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The development has hampered the Super Eagles’ preparations for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Information from the Super Eagles camp in Uyo indicate that 15 players took part in Monday morning’s comprehensive training session at the practice pitch of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium but five of the remaining eight players who are reportedly in the country could not get to Uyo because of the ongoing NLC strike which has stalled domestic flights.

The five players who are said to be stuck in Lagos and Abuja are Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka and Paul Onuachu while the trio of Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Maduka Okoye will arrive Nigeria today.

There was no training session yesterday evening, as the players will get countenance intensive sessions today, Wednesday and Thursday, hopefully with a full house.

Meanwhile, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has informed their Nigeria Football Federation counterpart of their travel plans ahead of Friday’s crucial match billed for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

According to SAFA, “Its delegation of Bafana Bafana is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Wednesday, with the team already booked into Four Points By Sheraton Hotel in Ikot-Ekpene.”

Similarly, the delegation of Nigeria’s U17 girls, Flamingos, will fly into the Liberian capital, Monrovia, on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final qualifying fixture, first leg encounter against their Liberian counterparts.

To reach this stage, the 2022 World Cup bronze medallists dispatched their counterparts from Central African Republic and Burkina Faso with high-goal margins. Central African Republic fell by a dozen goals on aggregate while the Burkinabe girls were routed 7-1.

Liberia, who ejected Senegal from the race, face a toug task against the Nigerian girls with Coach Bankole Olowookere insisting that the Flamingos are determined to be in the Dominican Republic to have the opportunity to challenge for the trophy this time around.

Sunday’s match has been slated for the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex at Paynesville – the same venue where the Super Eagles defeated the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone last year to qualify for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

PoliticsMinimum Wage: NLC,TUC To Suspend Strike After Grounding Economy by Celestialsword(op): 7:23am On Jun 04, 2024
24 hours after workers crippled Nigeria’s economy, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have reached a deal with the Federal Government to suspend the ongoing indefinite strike.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume disclosed this on Tuesday night while unveiling the resolutions of the emergency meeting with organized labour.

The four-point resolution was signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Minister of State Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, NLC President, Joe Ajaero and TUC President, Festus Osifo.

According to the resolutions, the federal government said it is committed to paying a minimum wage that is higher than N60,000.

The resolution stated that the tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage

Importantly, they added that organized labour will meet immediately to consider the federal government’s commitment.

“Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in iv above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action,” part of the resolution read.

A senior executive of organized labour who preferred anonymity told DAILY POST that workers would suspend the indefinite strike and return to negotiation with the government.

“For certain, organized labour will suspend its indefinite strike on Tuesday to continue negotiations with the tripartite committee.

“This is in line with the commitment extracted from the government after the meeting with the SGF”, he said.

Meanwhile, an earlier meeting between the organized labour and leadership of the National Assembly ended in a deadlock.

Consequently, workers commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, 3 June over the failure of the government to implement minimum wage and reversal of the electricity tariff hike.

NLC, TUC ground Nigeria’s economy

Nigeria’s economy was at a standstill Monday as organized Nigerian workers shut aviation, power, banks, ports, energy, road transport, and telecommunications sectors protesting the Federal government’s failure to implement minimum wage and reversal of the electricity tariff hike.

Airlines canceled flights leaving passengers stranded at Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja and other airports.

In the early hours of Monday, the Transmission Company of Nigeria announced that workers shut down the National grid leading to nationwide darkness. Many manufacturers have been operating on diesel which is N1415.06 per litre, while small business owners run on petrol N701.24 per liter.

To make the matter worse, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, are not exempted from the ongoing strike, making the twin product of fuel and diesel scarce.

Also, some banks and financial institutions partly closed operations.

DAILY POST observed that banks around the federal Secretariat in Abuja were shut down.

This was the case in Kano, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Oyo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Benue and other states.

Activities at public offices were grounded in compliance with strike action.

DAILY POST observed that striking workers shut doors to public offices.

The National Assembly Complex was shut down by striking workers. Same with the Federal Secretariat and other offices in Abuja. The same was experienced across all ports in Nigeria.

The development has placed Nigeria’s economy already battling with high inflation, unemployment, foreign exchange fluctuations and an energy crisis on the edge.

Tension over intimidation

There was tension when organized labour alleged that they were surrounded by the Army at the meeting with SGF.

However, the Nigerian Army clarified that organized labour’s claim was false and misleading. The Nigeria Army said its operatives at the SGF office accompanied the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Minimum wage proposal by Labour, FG

Organized labour had earlier proposed N494,000 as minimum wage, while the federal government is offering N60,000.

The organized labour had on different occasions staged a walkout from the tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage over the government’s refusal to shift ground.

Meanwhile, the latest commitment by the Nigerian government has indicated that it is willing to pay a minimum higher than N60,000.

Labour, the Nigerian govt should be empirical and realistic on minimum wage – Nwuba

Dr Alex Nwuba, President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Nigeria in an interview with DAILY POST on Monday said both the government and the labour must be empirical and realistic about the new minimum wage.

“It’s most unfortunate the consequences to those who must wait on the gladiators. This is merely the beginning as labour has presented an unrealistic offer and the government unwilling to move beyond its proposal.

“Both parties need to be more empirical, as the number proposed by each side does not address the issues and needs of the citizens.

“First, suspend the strike and determine what the economy can bear in wages, conduct studies on the required cost of living adjustments, as well as the numbers to keep the economy on track and competitive”, he told DAILY POST.

Nigeria govt should grant N150, 000 minimum wages to workers – Ojikutu

Capt. John Ojikutu, an industry expert and the CEO of Centurion Aviation Security and Safety Consult said Monday’s shutdown of Nigeria’s aviation sector further added to the problems the industry is grappling with.

He noted that if the government is serious about ending the issues of Nigerian workers, it should adopt N150,000 minimum wage.

“Nigerian Aviation has been thriving on many problems in the past 10 to twelve months which those in the government are yet to get solutions to.

“They should consider the electorates first before themselves because without the electorates, they cannot be what they are.

“Minimum pay for the workers, mainly the electorates, should not be less than N150,000.

Full privatization of the power sector will prevent national grid shutdown – Olubiyo

Kunle Olubiyo, the president of the Nigerian Consumer Protection Network said full and effective privatization of the power sector would have prevented the national grid shutdown by striking workers.

He blamed the rut in the power sector across the value chain for challenges in the industry.

He urged the government to completely deregulate the power sector in Nigeria.

“If the power is fully privatized, NLC, and TUC won’t shut down the national grid.

“We are in an emergency. Utility services like water, and electricity ought to be exempted if the workers are well-paid and the sector is effectively privatized.

“If the power sector is fully privatized, the nation grid won’t be shut.

PoliticsStrike: Aircraft To Convey Nigerian Pilgrims For Hajj Returned To S/arabia Empty by Celestialsword(op): 11:07pm On Jun 03, 2024
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised an alarm over the effect of the strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on thousands of Nigerian pilgrims and the airlifting operation of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON).

In a statement, on Monday, MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said a plane sent to airlift pilgrims from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia was turned back by striking aviation workers.

He lamented that the aircraft was forced to return to Jedda airport in Saudi Arabia empty.

“Meanwhile, thousands of Nigerian pilgrims are now in danger while the airlift operation has already been halted. Thousands of Muslim pilgrims who have left their homes for the airports are now stranded.”

“Nigerian Muslims are now asking NLC why it had to declare a national strike at a time more than 60,000 Nigerians are being airlifted. The families of these intending pilgrims are now in a high state of fear and anxiety.

“Apart from the confusion and hardship which the ongoing NLC strike constitutes to preparations being made by Muslim faithfuls for the Id al-Kabiir festival, the lives of Muslim pilgrims are now under palpable threat. Is this not sabotage? Is this not intentional? Can a national union of NLC caliber say it is unaware of Muslim preparations for hajj and Salah?” Akintola said.

He urged the NLC to immediately call off its strike as Nigeria would not gamble with the lives of thousands of Muslims who are already in camps.

“This strike hits the most sensitive nerves in the anatomy of Nigerian Muslims. Call off the strike immediately or face the wrath of Nigerian Muslims nationwide.

“This is an emergency and it has to be handled with speed. The lives of more than 60,000 Muslim pilgrims are in danger and the Federal government must move to save them.

“In case NLC fails to heed our appeal by 8 am tomorrow Tuesday, 4th June, 2024, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency. It is already clear that recalcitrance is in the DNA of the present NLC leadership.

“NLC leaders have detached themselves from the rest of Nigerians. Their demands are irrational and superfluous. Nigerians no longer trust it’s leadership. Only a state of emergency can rescue the country from the vice grip of NLC,” Akintola said.

PoliticsBlackout As Labour Shuts Down National Grid by Celestialsword(op): 2:52pm On Jun 03, 2024
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says the “labour union has shut down” the national grid, resulting in a blackout nationwide.

The national grid shutdown occured at about 2.19 am on June 3, 2024.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, commenced m their indefinite nationwide strike today, over the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage from N60,000.

In a statement on Monday signed by Ndidi Mbah its general manager, the TCN, said workers at the Benin Transmission were sent from the control room and beaten by the protesters.

The statement read: “At about 1:15am this morning, the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room and without any form of control or supervision, the Benin Area Control Center was brought to zero.

“Other transmission substations that were shut down, by the Labour Union include the Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba and Osogbo Transmission Substations.

“Some transmission lines were equally opened due to the ongoing activities of the labour union.

“On the power generating side, power generating units from different generating stations were forced to shut down some units of their generating plants, the Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its generating units while three others in the same substation subsequently shut down on very high frequency.

“The sudden forced load cuts led to high frequency and system instability, which eventually shut down the national grid at 2:19am.”

The TCN, however, said grid recovery commenced at about 3:23 am, using the Shiroro substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe transmission substation.

“The situation is such that the labour Union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide,” the firm said.

The transmission company said it would continue to make effort to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide.

PoliticsAir France 'abadons' 61 Nigerian Passengers In Chad by Celestialsword(op): 11:46pm On Jun 01, 2024
An Abuja-bound Air France flight has dropped off 61 Nigerian passengers in neighbouring Chad and allegedly abandoned them in the country.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed the development via his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening.

The Minister said he had immediately directed the Consumer Protection Department of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to swing into action and engage Air France even as he urged the airline to quickly speak out on the fate of the Nigerian passengers.

In a video posted by Keyamo, the passengers, including a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Johnson Agbonayima, were heard lamenting their fate, saying they hoped the Nigerian authorities will quickly do something about their plight.

Keyamo wrote: “It has come to my attention that some Nigerians on an Air France flight from Paris to Abuja are presently stranded in Chad, from where the flight earlier dropped some passengers.

“I have immediately directed the Consumer Protection Department of NCAA to swing into action and engage Air France. We shall inform everyone of the outcome soon. Meanwhile, I urge @AirFranceNG to immediately issue a statement on the fate of those Nigerians.”

However, in an update provided by NCAA following the directive of the Aviation Minister, the Air France aircraft was said to have developed a fault owing to weatheric conditions.

Head of Consumer Protection Department of NCAA, Michael Achimugu, who also took to X to respond to Keyamo’s directive, said the affected 61 passengers have been accommodated in two hotels in Chad pending their airlift to Abuja.

Achimugu stated: “We have engaged the airline. Aircraft developed a tech due weather. All 61 passengers have been accommodated in two hotels and feeding is taken care of. Discussions are ongoing to ensure pax are flown in ASAP. Will provide further updates shortly.”

LEADERSHIP reports that just last week, Turkish Airlines left over 300 Nigerian passengers stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a development that infuriated the Federal Government of Nigeria, hence its intervention and subsequent airlift of the passengers to Istanbul.

PoliticsTinubu's Silence And Unreported Achievements - Tunde Rahman by Celestialsword(op): 9:32pm On Jun 01, 2024
But for the ministerial presentations on the achievements of the President Bola Tinubu administration in its first year, christened Ministerial Sectoral Update, which began on Tuesday May 21 at the National Press Centre in Abuja, many may not have known or appreciated the quantum of work that has been done by the government within such a short period of one year in office. This piece is not really about the re-engineering work that is being done on the economy, which is now recording a gradual growth. For instance, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, the nation recorded a 2.98% growth in the first quarter of this year, higher than 2.31% recorded in the same period in 2023.

The article is also not about the improving security in the land, especially in the oil producing Niger-Delta region, which has engendered increased oil production. Daily oil production has jumped up from barely 1million to 1.7million barrels per day including condensate, overshooting Nigeria’s OPEC quota, following the statistics provided by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. The focus of this piece is also not about the increasing flow of investments into the economy, like the $30 billion Foreign Direct Investment commitments already secured during the year to grow the economy.

My focus is about those silent, quiet achievements recorded, thus far, by the administration, which are largely unreported and unsung until now. These achievements are by no means insignificant. They are so concrete and substantial that in some instances, they are ground-breaking, either laying or re-laying the foundation for growth and development in the country or resetting the sectors where they have occurred.

It must be admitted, however, that some ministers have little to showcase in one year. This is evident enough in their presentations, which were drab and lack-luster in a number of cases. The ministerial presentations and inauguration of projects executed by the administration were the only approved activities organised to mark President Tinubu’s one-year anniversary. The president had ordered a low-key celebration.

One defining feature of most of the achievements recorded in the various ministries is that they emerged from the vision or ideas President Tinubu espoused and developed overtime, and embodied in his Renewed Hope Agenda as eight priority areas. The President is reform-minded and, like Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, he is the Guardian Angel of those reforms and the achievements recorded thus far.

It is pertinent to highlight some of these reforms and initiatives across the various sectors. Take, for instance, the laudable projects executed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Ezenwo Nyesome Wike, the catalyst for those monumental achievements in just one year, is the full autonomy granted FCT by President Tinubu over the resources accruing to the territory. By removing FCT from the Treasury Single Account, the FCT Administration’s resources were unlocked for Wike to deploy in addressing the developmental challenges of the city. Yet that singular action of the President remains unsung and perhaps unappreciated by many. Of course, there are more things done to recalibrate the governance structure of the FCT by the president, including approval for more Mandate Secretaries and its own Civil Service Commission.

As a result of these presidential approvals, Minister Wike, away from the political turmoil in his native Rivers State where he has been fingered as a central figure, unleashed infrastructure on the FCT, opening up new districts with a network of roads and bridges, and resurfacing arterial roads. The minister has completed the construction of many bridges, refurbished the moribund metro line in Abuja and created access roads to the train stations, which had earlier rendered the stations inaccessible even when it was briefly operational. Around $15 million was expended on building the access roads to the various stations.

The minister also restructured and completed the official residence of the Vice President, which had been abandoned since 2010. Some cynics may ask-how important is that residential project at this point in time? This question would be of no significance when it is realized that the project, valued at N7billion in 2010, could not be left to waste and to scoundrels at a time the FCT authorities are working hard to ward off kidnappers and other criminal elements.

The Ministry of Power also has a remarkable story to share, though many would insist the sector has left much to be desired given its importance as an enabler of the economy. But believe it, a silent retooling, which promises to change the disastrous electricity situation in the country, is ongoing. Indeed, unbeknownst to many, power generation is gradually increasing. For instance, 5000MW of power was achieved this month for the first time in three years. “Precisely on May 3, 2024, we generated, transmitted, and distributed 5,003.45MW of power. This is expected to further rise to 6000MW by the end of this year,” the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, said in his presentation.

President Tinubu did three important things, among others, to tackle the issues in the electricity supply value-chain and set the sector on the path to recovery and optimal performance. Number one, in June 2023, President Tinubu signed the 2023 Electricity Act into law, marking a significant milestone in the sector. The new law focuses on enhancing the regulation and management of the electricity value chain with the active participation of the sub-national governments. This, thus far, has resulted in the process of devolution of regulatory powers to three states – Enugu, Ekiti, and Ondo – to set up their electricity markets.

Two, the President gave approval to defray legacy debts owed gas companies to allow efficient gas supply for the sector going forward and payment mechanism to address generation companies’ debts. This, according to Adelabu, will ensure necessary maintenance and evacuation capacity optimization.

Third, there has also been a series of infrastructure upgrades in the last one year. The ongoing Siemens Power project under the Presidential Power Initiative was one of the programmes that ensured improvement of power assets in Nigeria. In December 2023, President Tinubu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz witnessed the signing of an accelerated performance agreement aimed at expediting the implementation of the PPI to improve electricity supply in Nigeria.

The Minister of Power also disclosed that the government had also put in place the required framework to achieve an injection of 3.5 million meters into the power sector – 1.5 million meters through the World Bank Distribution Support Recovery Program and 2 million meters through the Presidential Metering Initiative.

In aviation, some developments are worthy of note, including the construction of the second Abuja runway, which had been stalled for many years as a result of law suits while a second runway in Lagos has been reactivated. Among other things, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo has facilitated the acquisition of aircraft by local operators under the dry lease agreement to support and empower the indigenous airlines to compete with international airlines on more lucrative international routes like the case of Air Peace on the Lagos-London route.

Additionally, discussions have also reached an advanced stage with foreign investors to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Centre in Nigeria through PPP. Ibom Air is almost through in their negotiations with Airbus.

With respect to the food situation in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development launched dry season farming involving 118, 651 hectares in 15 states, with Jigawa State alone getting 40,000 hectares. This intervention injected an estimated N309 billion into the economy, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Abubakar Kyari. The ministry also supported a total of 107, 429 wheat farmers with inputs resulting in output of 474, 628 metric tonnes. It has also created about 60,000 jobs across the agric value chain within the first year.

As the administration’s substantial investments in enhancing security across the country begin to post concrete yields, this will positively impact agricultural productivity going into the President’s second year in office.

Also, the revenue accruing to the country from marine and blue economy is on the increase. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, said the ministry, through its agencies, realised N242 billion within the first quarter of 2024, which represents 92% compared to the amount generated within the same period last year.

Importantly, the nation’s budgeting system has also been rejuvenated to give proper attention to the government’s priorities. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, who incidentally is also the Chairman of the Ministerial Sectoral Update Committee, said the 2024 budget has two remarkable features. “One is the determination, despite our challenges, to restore budget discipline by lowering the fiscal deficit. So, the 2024 budget targeted a reduction in deficits from 6.11% in 2023 to less than 4% in 2024 and an increase in capital expenditure relative to recurrent spending, which is 39% expenditure, the highest in the country’s history,” he said.

In addition to innovative budgeting, N100 billion fund has been earmarked for Consumer Credit designed to mobilise the manufacturing sector to produce again, which would occur when the people can fund their purchases.
There is also a mortgage fund to support the creation of mortgages. “So with consumer credit mobilising the manufacturing sector, mortgages re-energising the housing sector, and national agricultural development fund mobilising the agricultural sector, our youth and our productive economy will be mobilised. The N130 billion we provided for conversion, for transition to CNG, which is a cheaper form of energy than petroleum, is designed to restore energy competitiveness so that our manufacturing sector, our transport sector, and our economy will benefit from a cheaper form of energy that will support the economic reform,” Bagudu said.

Under the Tinubu government, the projects and initiatives undertaken thus far did not emerge by happenstance or by luck. They are well thought-out and emerged from a vision to reengineer the country and put it on the path of economic recovery and prosperity. One of these landmark initiatives is the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s crumbling infrastructure. This fund has earmarked substantial investments for constructing and rehabilitating roads, bridges, and public amenities. The construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road connecting nine littoral states has already taken off. There is also the Students Loan Fund for indigent students in tertiary institutions, which registration portal opened about two weeks ago.

The country may not be where it should be at present. There are still challenges; notable among them is the cost of living, which is still high. Food prices surged last month, with inflation rising to 33.69%, according to NBS. The Naira is also struggling to find its level against the Green Back, hovering around N1,400 to N1,500/1$ at the parallel market for a couple of weeks. However, on Wednesday, May 29, it recorded its biggest appreciation in four months to close at N1,173. 88/1$.

The country is gradually turning the corner.

Looking back at how far he has gone since he mounted the saddle, President Tinubu said the journey had been challenging and fulfilling. He promised that his administration would do all it takes for the average Nigerian to feel the impact of governance, stating that governance must be transformative and must address the critical needs of citizens.

Speaking when he received a delegation of the Yoruba Leaders of Thought at the State House, Abuja on Friday May 24, President Tinubu added that the country is no longer “bleeding”, but moving gradually into prosperity.
“It has been challenging. It has been fulfilling as well. We took over, and we have stopped the bleeding. I can say categorically now that Nigeria is no longer bleeding. And it will not bleed to death, but rather will now move to prosperity.

“That is the promise that I made to you all, and it is also the charge that you gave to me. We are managing to swim through the pond. The current is not a good one. We will turn the tide. We are turning the bend. This I assure you. I am being very careful. The worst is over for Nigeria. We will prevail.
“I thank the team who have been working really hard. All I can promise is that we will do whatever it takes. We are determined, and we will work so that all Nigerians can feel the impact of good governance.”

PoliticsLeave Or Die',iswap Issues Quit Notice To Borno Communities by Celestialsword(op): 9:06pm On Jun 01, 2024
Barely four days after killing fifteen fishermen in the Tumbun Rogo community, the Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have given residents of Kukawa LGA notice to quit their communities or face death from the terror group.

A resident who fled his community to Maiduguri three hours after receiving the threat, revealed this to Channels Television.

While relieving his experience, the resident who begged anonymity, explained that the terrorists had gathered residents of various communities in the lga in the early hours of Thursday, and told them to vacate their homes before Saturday, or else they would be killed.

According to him, immediately after they received the threat from the terrorists, communities started vacating their communities, some to Kross Kauwa while others left for Monguno.

Kukawa LGA is a local government at Lake Chad that is popular for fishing, farming and other agricultural value chain activities. it is surrounded by Lake Chad and has the presence of troops of the Nigerian Army and the Navy.

Although displaced by the insurgents during the insurgency, some communities like Kross Kauwa, Baga, Doron-Baga, Kukawa community, Tumbun Rogo were resettled back by the Professor Babagana Zulum administration.

Despite the restoration of relative peace and stability to the area, Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have continued to attack the communities, due to the socioeconomic value of the area to the terrorists, who exploit the fishing and farming activities of the place for their survival and financial support.

PoliticsTension As Soldiers Lay Siege On Aba, Markets Shut by Celestialsword(op): 5:17am On Jun 01, 2024
Tension is increasing in Aba, Abia state, as soldiers have taken over the city following the killing of five of their colleagues at a military checkpoint located at Obikabia junction, Ogbor Hill.

Gunmen suspected to be enforcers of the sit at home order directed by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, had attacked the checkpoint and killed five soldiers and burnt two patrol vans as well as their checkpoint.

The tension over the killing has increased with two military helicopters still hovering over the Ogbor Hill area and environs.

Vanguard gathered that residents have resorted to scampering for safety whenever they sight the several patrol teams of soldiers who move on top speed.

Vanguard also gathered that soldiers had stormed Cemetery, Ngwa road, Nsulu markets and other business centres and ordered traders to leave the areas. Many schools in the city didn’t open for studies as parents did not allow their children to leave for school while some schools closed before midday.

However, the Aba main motor park was still a beehive of activities when Vanguard visited. Vanguard also noted that soldiers had left the military checkpoints at Asa road and Emelogu junction in Ogbor Hill.

Residents of Umuola, Ukaegbu, Ehere, New Umuahia and Ururuka roads in Ogbor Hill and Obohia and Ohanku in Ndiegoro area, as well as adjoining areas have remained indoors for fear of reprisal from soldiers.

Fierce looking soldiers have also barricaded the Aba – Umuahia section of the Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway. Passengers now alight at Arungwa, Umuekea, Isiala Ngwa and Ntigha junctions and trek a kilometer while raising their hands. To avoid the situation, some motorists navigate through local routes to avoid the numerous military checkpoints on the expressway.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Army Public Relations Officer,14 Brigade, Ohafia, Lt. Innocent Omale, was unsuccessful, as he didn’t respond to a message sent to his mobile number.

FoodThree Good Alternatives To Fresh Tomatoes by Celestialsword(op): 7:36pm On May 31, 2024
As prices of fresh tomatoes have tripled in less than a month, many Nigerians now look for alternatives to the vegetable which is a major ingredient in the preparation of the country’s legendary jollof rice.

Tomato prices in Africa’s most populated nation, have jumped by 350 per cent to N45,000 for a 25kg basket as against N10,000 three weeks ago, while a big basket has surged to N120,000 from N40,000 in the period under review.

Many households have now cut down on the consumption of jollof rice and other foods where fresh tomato is a key ingredient because of the sudden escalating prices.

This price surge is hinged on a pest infestation called Tuta absoluta or Tomatoes Ebola affecting tomato crops in many major producing states around the country. Also, unconducive climate change is affecting the production output of the vegetable.

While the federal government is working towards a solution, in no particular order, BusinessDay has identified three vegetables that are good alternatives for fresh tomatoes and that can be adopted into the diets of Nigerians.

Carrots

In its blended form, carrots are a good alternative to fresh tomatoes. The vegetable not only has a sweet taste but can also give off the bright red colour of fresh tomatoes when used in large quantities.

It contains a load of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support immunity, heart, kidney, and liver health, and provide other health benefits.

When mixed with peppers, carrots can give the reddish colour of fresh tomatoes in jollof rice and stews.

Carrots are sold for N200 and above, depending on location. They make a cheap alternative to fresh tomatoes.

Eggplant

While it might not give dishes the reddish colour customary to fresh tomatoes, eggplant is a good alternative to fresh tomatoes.

It contains a good amount of vitamins, minerals and fibre, and only a few calories. Eggplants make a fine sauce due to its thick consistency and sweet taste.

The fruit is a large egg-shaped berry with a glossy surface that varies in colour from dark purple to red, pink, yellowish, or white.

It could be used for cooking stew that can be eaten with rice, yam, potatoes and plantain, among other dishes.

Eggplants are sold in many markets around Nigeria at a more affordable price than fresh tomatoes.

Beets

With its red colour, beets are another alternative for fresh tomatoes. When blended, beets can be added to different dishes ranging from salad as a colouring agent, to jollof rice and stews.

Beetroot juice has been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, and increased exercise performance.

It is also not as expensive as fresh tomatoes and can function in the stead of fresh tomatoes, as well as contains a lot of beneficial nutrients to human health.

Beets are sold in many markets around the country.

critique99:
The bastard Sultan of Sokoto.., your ancestors came from Futa Djallon in present day Guinea, to establish a fake caliphate in Hausa Land.

Yes, your ancestor arrived Hausa land naked, then later abused the hospitality of indigenous northern people, and established a fake caliphate in Hausa land , using Islam as pretext. Instead of them to be satisfied and enjoy their conquest in the North, they arrogantly wanted to extend the conquest down South. They tried and failed in the Middle Belt. And instead of them to stop right there and enjoy their conquest in the North. They refused. They insisted on pushing their conquest down South, by all means. The arrogance of migrant bastards.

A migrant and descendants of a migrant have the audacity to attempt to extend their conquest down South. Till today, they are bogged down in the Middle Belt.

This explains the endless crises in the Middle Belt. From Jos North, Taraba, Zamfara, Southern Kaduna, Benue, Zangon Kataf, Kwara, etc; the descendants of a migrant have continued to kill indigenous Hausa and Middle Belt people. It pains me down to the bones. A migrant, minority population, have continued to foment trouble all over Nigeria.

That migrant is Uthman Dan Fodio, ... and the descendant who secretly continues to drive the conquest agenda is no other than the Sultan of Sokoto. I write this with all sense of decency. You see, the northern people have been blind for way too long. And that enabled the fulani to think they are unstoppable.

Every Nigerian must understand that the so-called Herdsmen crises and killings are nothing but land grabbing and attempted conquest, which is well palnned and well executed. And sadly the Hausa people have been aiding this conquest agenda. That shows you how brainwashed and stupid the Hausa are.. Having sold their birth right and native land to migrant fulani; they want to sell the whole Nigeria.

The fulani claim land for cattle and business; then they come in settle there with their people. In few years, that community becomes an abbatoir. Killings, killings, killings, by the fulani people you allowed in. That is how they operate. Everywhere the fulani has entered, there are killinga and regret. The fulani are ungrateful, vile, and very evil. And this has been happening for 200 years. Yes, for 200 years, the Sultan of Sokoto and his predecessors have been the drivers of the killings that destabilize the North and the Middle Belt.

When Nigerians are ready, they would march to the Caliphate and capture the Sultan. That day would surely come.

Know this and know peace, that Nigeria lost greatly for the failures of the indigenous Hausa people. And the earlier the Hausa realize that the Fulani have no ancestral right or claims in Nigeria, the sooner the Hausa can start exercising their rights over the fulani, who are nothing in Nigeria..

The bastard Sultan thinks he owns Nigeria; thinks Nigeria is his father's estate, thinks the fulani are at home in Nigeria. He is delusional. This is exactly how the fulani has kept the North backward. And they think they could hold out forever. No, it doesn't work like that. Their end clock has started ticking.
But they succeeded in conquering KWARA a Yoruba state,95% of Kwarans are Muslims ditto OSUN state.

The South will never tolerate it, they will be stopped
