Nemat Malik, an 80-year-old nurse and a university professor in Khartoum, said she was pleased to see so many women—particularly students—taking part. “This regime is a lot of harassment and oppression for women especially. Women have suffered a lot. “They look at how you dress and they can give you lashes. That’s why we should be very much interested in overthrowing this regime,” she said. |

Sudanese medical professionals alleged that security forces have stormed hospitals and fired at injured protesters. |
Sudanese women are taking a leading role in protests against President Omar al-Bashir, which have gained added inspiration from the demonstrations in Algeria, opposition figures said at a London conference. Sara Abdelgalil, head of the UK branch of the Sudan Doctors’ Union, told AFP that Bashir had tried to suppress women during the 30 years he has been in power. “This regime could not crush down women and women’s ability to fight for change and freedom,” said Abdelgalil, a doctor who moved to Britain in 2001 but is in contact with protest leaders. “Sudanese women’s resistance and resilience overcome this suppression,” said the 44-year-old. Protests in Sudan against the government’s decision to triple the price of bread began on December 19 in the central town of Atbara, quickly spreading to the capital Khartoum and other towns. Officials say 32 people have died in protest-related violence so far, while Human Rights Watch has put the death toll at 51. The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which the doctors’ union is linked to, is leading the protests. ‘My son thought I was dead’ Nemat Malik, an 80-year-old nurse and a university professor in Khartoum, said she was pleased to see so many women—particularly students—taking part. “This regime is a lot of harassment and oppression for women especially. Women have suffered a lot. “They look at how you dress and they can give you lashes. That’s why we should be very much interested in overthrowing this regime,” she said. Sudan adopted sharia law in 1983, but since then has only implemented it randomly. Under Bashir, who came to power with the help of Islamists in 1989, some rules have been tightened. According to Sudanese non-governmental groups, some 15,000 women were sentenced to flogging in 2016. Ihsan Fagiri, 65, a doctor who also teaches in Khartoum, said she was detained for two and a half months by Sudanese security forces to keep her away from the protests. “From day one when this government came to power, they started to design laws against women. Don’t wear trousers, cover your hair, don’t speak loudly… That’s why we felt that we need to change the government.” Fagiri said she was held with nine other women in a room measuring six metres by four with only five beds. She suffers from diabetes, but was not allowed treatment for 15 days and could not see her family for a month. “My son thought I was dead,” said Fagiri, who in 2009 co-founded a campaign group for women’s rights. ‘Revolution winning’ At their conference in London, the Sudanese medical professionals alleged that security forces have stormed hospitals and fired at injured protesters. But participants said they were encouraged by events in Algeria, where president Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned last week after two decades in power following massive street protests. “What happened in Algeria is exactly what we are calling for,” Abdelgalil said, noting however that Algerians “have not been subjected to violence and human rights violations and killings and detentions” during the protests. But the Sudanese women believe “the revolution is winning.” “The government has collapsed. All they depend on is the security forces,” alleged Abdelgalil. Fagiri added: “It’s a matter of days or weeks”. https://www.alexa.ng/

The Pentagon says it has awarded almost $1 billion in contracts to two companies to construct a wall on the US southern border with the construction set to end in October 2020. This marks the first such contracts to be awarded since President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on February 15 to bypass congressional approval and secure funding for the construction of his controversial wall along the US-Mexico border. The Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $789 million contract to the company SLSCO Ltd., from Galveston, Texas, for "border replacement wall construction" in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, according to a notice released on the Pentagon's website on Tuesday. Barnard Construction Co. Inc., of Bozeman, Montana, was also awarded a contract worth $187 million for "design-bid-build construction project for primary pedestrian wall replacement" in Yuma, Arizona, the notice reads. Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the head of the Army Corps of Engineers, predicted that by "around December of 2020, the total amount of money that we will have put in the ground in the last couple of years will be about 450 miles. That's probably about $8 billion, in total about 33 different projects." Building the wall was one of Trump’s most frequently repeated campaign promises. He vowed to crack down on illegal immigration in part by building the wall on the border with Mexico. But bore than three years into his term, the US president has failed to fulfill that promise. Congress refusal to provide the president with the $5.7 billion he needs to build the wall resulted in the longest government shutdown in the US. On January 25, the president signed legislation to temporarily end the 35-day partial government shutdown, dropping his previous insistence on immediate funding for construction of the barrier. https://www.alexa.ng/

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Monday confirmed a passenger train crushed a beggar to death at Mushin area of Lagos. Mr Jerry Oche, the Lagos District Manager (RDM) of the corporation, made confirmation while addressing newsmen on the incident in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an Ijoko to Iddo bound Mass Transit Train crushed a beggar to death near the Mushin railway station on Monday morning. NAN reports that the unidentified beggar was one of the six beggars that sat in a row near the railway line at the Mushin Railway corridor. Oche said life of every Nigerian was important to the corporation, advising people to endeavour to obey the order and signs attached to the rail lines. According to him, it is against the law to sit or trade beside the railway line, either begging for alms or for any other reason. Oche, however, warned traders, hawkers, beggars and passersby to stay away from the rail lines across the state to avoid casualty. “Anybody who has no business entering the train should not be on the rail corridor, because it is very dangerous. “It’s like a suicide mission seeing a train approaching and you are still sitting down on the track,” he said. https://www.alexa.ng/

Clear your schedules because it looks like a Queen Bey documentary could be released soon. Netflix on Sunday announced that “Homecoming,” reportedly about Beyoncé’s jaw-dropping performances at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last year, will be available to stream on April 17 ― and her fans are freaking out on Twitter. The “Drunk in Love” singer, the first black woman to headline Coachella, nearly broke the internet in April 2018 when she treated festivalgoers to a two-hour, whirlwind set that was a nod to historically black colleges and universities. Coinciding with her Coachella appearance last year, Beyoncé announced the Homecoming Scholars Award Program, an initiative that provides scholarships to students at HBCUs for study in various fields. https://www.alexa.ng/ |
Lagos State Government should disclose to the public how much it has spent on houses, vehicles and allowances of its former governors and ex-deputy governors. |

Nigeria as a country has suffered a great deal in the hands of the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram allegedly linked to ISIS. While many have fallen under the sword of the killer group and some areas in the Northern Part of Nigeria have been captured by them, the Nigerian armed forces have toiled day and night to put an end to their terrorist activities. In the course of putting an end to terrorist attacks in Nigeria, the Nigerian armed forces has also had its fair share of tears, pain and victory. Sadly a rather tragic event occurred on Sunday while taking flight to the battlefield to put an end to the menace of the Boko Haram terrorist group. An air force officer identified as Umar lost his life while passing through the side of the functioning rotor. According to report, a colleague of the diseased, who witnessed the incident, explained that it happened at Bama in Borno state on Saturday evening. The aircraft was said to have developed a fault. The victim who was said to be an aircraftman lost his head immediately as he returned from dropping his bags. Reports say that his head was chopped off by the rotor which was functioning. “The aircraft has been recovered and taken back to the airbase. No damage was found on the tail rotor,” the source said. It was learnt that family members of the deceased have been informed while the burial arrangement was on as of the time this report was filed. https://www.alexa.ng/ |
The Lagos State Government has refused to disclose how much it has spent on houses, vehicles and allowances of its former governors and ex-deputy governors. The PUNCH had in December 2018 written a letter to the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, requesting to know how much of taxpayers’ money had been spent on former governors and former deputy governors based on the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007. Specifically, The PUNCH asked for the amount that had been spent on purchasing houses and vehicles for all former governors and deputy governors and other allowances paid to them from 2007 to December 2018. Repeated calls to the Commissioner for Information, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, proved futile as he asked our correspondent to give him more time. Subsequent phone calls and text messages were not acknowledged by the commissioner. The Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007 states that former governors of the state are entitled to a house each in any location of their choice in Lagos and Abuja. Section 2 states, “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms.” The state government has built houses for former governors of the state in Lagos and Abuja in line with the law. A house was bought for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Ikoyi and the Asokoro area of Abuja. Houses have also been built for former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who is now the Minister of Power, Works and Housing. Others who are benefitting from the law are former deputy governors Femi Pedro, Abiodun Ogunleye, Sarah Sosan, and Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his deputy, Oluranti Adebule, are expected to be added to the list of beneficiaries once their tenure expires next month. A former governor is also entitled to six new cars every three years, 100 per cent of the basic salary of the serving governor (N7.7m per annum), as well as free health care for himself and members of his family. The law also says former governors will be entitled to furniture allowance, which is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary (N23.3m); house maintenance allowance, which is 10 per cent of basic salary (N778,296); utility allowance, which is 20 per cent of the salary (N1.5m) and car maintenance allowance, which is 30 per cent of the annual basic salary (N2.3m). Other benefits include entertainment allowance, which is 10 per cent of the basic salary (N778,296) and a personal assistant, who will earn 25 per cent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9m). The law adds that a former governor is entitled to domestic workers comprising a cook, a steward, a gardener and others whose appointments are pensionable. A former governor will also be entitled to eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life, according to the Lagos law. However, the law does not state how much can be spent on building houses, procuring vehicles and health issues. The information was what necessitated the FOI request. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria had, in its 2018 Accountability Index scored, Lagos 29 per cent on government transparency. ICAN ranked Kaduna, Abia, Anambra, Kebbi, Ekiti and Jigawa states higher than Lagos State. The state government has repeatedly ignored FOI requests, insisting that the Act only applies to Federal Government agencies despite a judgment by a Court of Appeal last year that the FOI Act is applicable to all states in Nigeria. https://www.alexa.ng/ |

The management of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) in Owerri, Imo State, has finally confirmed that three out of the four students, who died at the Sunshine Castle Hostel, Ihiagwa, after allegedly taking tramadol and Indian hemp, were their students. The school’s Public Relations Officer, Uche Nwelue, said after investigation, the university was able to identify three of the victims. Nwelue told reporters that checks in the school’s student data system, confirmed that the three males, who allegedly took part in the sex orgy at the hostel near the institution, were students of FUTO. The university’s spokesperson said, “I can now confirm to you that all the three boys, who took part in the alleged sex incident after an alleged drug overdose, were students of the university. “The only female among them is not our student; she is from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. That is the true situation of things as it concerns the studentship of the victims.” Asked what the university would do now that it had confirmed that three out of the four students were from the institution, Nwelue stated, “The university is actually handicapped as it relates to this matter. “The incident happened outside of the campus of the university. We do not have control over their lifestyle outside the campus. Moreover, the school has rules and regulations guiding every student here. “If any of them breaks it, we will punish him/her once he/she comes back to school. But beyond this, parents should watch their children and encourage them to live in hostels on the campus. It will make them to be more serious and dedicated to their studies.” It had been reported that four students, Ugochukwu Kingsley, Richard, Aka Uche and Onyinyechi Okafor, were rescued from the hostel after an alleged sex romp.
