Just report to civil defense office . thats what my coleague here did. Though the senior alhaji in charge of herdsmen in the area later settled him with 50k for the 2plots of maize and he collected and forgot about civil defense process. Civil defense is in charge of agro allied infrastructures.

I will do that right away, I didn't not see them so I can't go and see d senior alhaji but I'm thinking of going to see him this week, I heard he was sick.

So cows enter my farm today, it was very bad day for me, even if the damage was not that bad but I felt my country has really disappointed me today, I'm not giving up anyway. Dey ate the maize, I think it just one cow, seriously if I saw that cow I would have killed it or even killed the headsman with it because I was very angry. Something I have spent over 270k on, well I'm getting a security man ASAP. If not for this headsman agriculture will progress in nigeria very well because u can take two weeks before going to ur farm but with this hardsmen u don't want to leave ur farm. In my nxt budget, I'm included cameras and solar to power them, I will have a security house where my security men can watch and horn speakers to talk to them even if they are 15m away from my farm, this guys are very wicked, they just want to make sure we don't benefit anything from our farm. I will go as far as getting a court order to kill any cow that enters my farm and have their head sign it..... Its very painful to see ur crops eaten by some follish, stupid headsmen cows because dey feel their person is in power. I will get ready for them nxt planting season, dey should enjoy....

Maize planted around a river will grow very well with little rain. The reason is the river will breathe on the maize. Also, the soil around the river is soft and moist. I have a stream at the end of my farm where I plant vegetables. My maize stand around the stream grows well with little rain. It the stream that brings antelopes and co. to my farm.

The land far from the river will need the pump. But if it isn't automated (which is expensive) you have to consider pumping machine, hose, labour (that will not do it well), theft etc. Cost and risk.

Fresh maize is expensive from around September to April. Most maize farmers that plant dry season aim for dried maize instead of fresh.

I'm telling u but why do dey aim for dried instead of fresh, I really want to believe its lack of information, dey believe dried maize is more expensive than fresh maize but dey are making a mistake, if u farm well and have good marketing skills u will make money from fresh maize. The only reason I have fear of fresh maize is transporting them from my farm village to Lagos or ogun or ibadan but I believe that if you can have ur market, u can harvest very early and before 10 or 11am you should deliver your goods. Harvesting from around 5am. I might be wrong sha, let our experience farms tell us how they do this. From the village I am to Lagos market is like 4-5hrs drive.

Farmers, how do you manage using rain to grow maize? This year rain was so late. For example, if you apply fertilizer, and rain does not fall, what do you do? During the 6th week tassels start developing and there is no rain, what do you do? Or do you have a secret to force down rain? Just curious. Cos rain isn't stable. I think only roots and tubers can tolerate long period of drought. @ifedola28 @Inspectahdeck @ijemishkisic @Chiansky @

God will provide rain. There is nothing u can do than wait, I have not apply fertilizer because of no rain, so we are waiting, once rain falls u can apply and it takes two weeks for the fertilizer to dissolve, so rain most meet it. For me I just do my own and leave the rest for God and nature.

Armyworm is a pest on maize that can affect profitability of the farm invaded. Armyworm was transport to Nigeria by overzealous farmers looking for more tonnage per hectare. This pest came from America and I know a few big farmers that caused this problem on us but I will not mention any names.

@OP the reason the chemicals did not work maybe the type of chemical and application. last dry season when I used the solo seed I used emacot or Caterpillar force but the secret is to spray very early in the morning or late in the evening. During the day the pest leave the maize so if you spray during this time you are just wasting money and time. Note spray early in the morning say 6 or 7 am and late in the night say 6ish.

Then when spraying direct the nose of the sprayer into the maize not around it or on it. Note INTO the maize stand where they hide.

Below is a picture of the dead pest after applying the pesticide

Also, about workers and their management. What I do is I create a sense of responsibility and belonging in my staffs. I allow their ideas and use such idea. It makes them happy and willing to put more effort and when I don't agree with them, I explain and we argue till we conclude.

I don't monitor money so much with my manager. I give him a chance to gain some... Note not to much maybe 500 or 1000 naira per task. I also give them profit sharing after sales. I give them clothes, old phones, I know their parents, family, we drink together after work anytime I sleep over, we joke like peers etc. So they are the once doing more to Impress me it is psychology and when the staffs do not do the job well, the manager and supervisor re-do the work sometimes before I get to the farm or when I complain.

Sorry for the grammar and mistakes, I am only a farmer and on the move. I will explain better when I am settled

How did you mix your Caterpillar force, how many litres did use per packet.

The maize is shelled and put in the bag. Once bagged, it is the weight of the bag that comes into play and not number of cobs. So your question in this case does not apply here.

Now I understand, he was referring to dried maize, I thought it was still fresh maize as I was confused.
Agriculture / Re: Maize Farmers Only by Chiansky(m): 1:06am On Jun 19, 2019
Let me drop my own, I just started my maize farm like last 3 weeks, as of yesterday I became disturbed about selling when they are matured, so went ahead to make inquiries, someone I asked how much he will sell his told me 30n per cobe but I think that's on a high said anyway. Nxt week I will be going to Lagos to do market survey and marketing as well. By the way I planter oba super 6, one thing I noticed with high braid is it needs much fertilizer so if you plan on using them prepare for fertilizer and never manage them, at most 3 bags of NPK 15:15:15 for one hr. I should have gone for open pollinated as they told me was better for fresh maize.

Now my planting method.

first I used manure hand planter to plant almost 2hr of land, the remaining part of the land will be done with hand, I used rops to separate the distance between 75cm so in each 10m I will get 13 stands of maize. Now my plan is to sell fresh because I feel its more profitable and less stressful than dried maize, from my calculations if you have 45000 stands in an hr and each produce 1 cobe each and you sell for 10n you make 450000n based on calculation. As you can see population matters a lot in maize farming because that will bring in more profit. One of the things I will not do is I will not sell in kgs if it doesn't profit me. So for those that have sold fresh before how many cobes of fresh maize are in 50kg, as a farmer you should know all this calculation so as to know which favours u. Yes some persons will say it varies with size but you should know the minimum and maximum amount. Picture of my farm below

My Experience

I cultivated Oba super 6 from Premier seeds on the two farms. I noticed that the seeds were so tiny compared to what is sold in the open market. But for a first time maize farmer, the joy of cultivating hybrid seeds was unspeakable.

As I mentioned earlier, those with manure grew better and the cobs were okay but there wasn't really anything spectacular about the size of the cobs when I compared the sizes with that of a nearby local farmer who cultivated seeds bought from the open market. In fact, some of his maize plants were carrying 3 - 4 cobs at the same time.

I was forced to ask him of the type of hybrid maize seeds he planted. He just laughed and said, ' No be hybrid be dis'

I have come across two to three maize farmers who used premier seeds at first and vowed to use open market seeds in the subsequent plant season.

This got me wondering.

What if I purchase open market maize seeds, treat the seeds to avoid loss before germination, apply fertilzers the same way I will do to an hybrid seeds. 'WILL I GET A BETTER YIELD'

Mind you, most of the maize seeds you find in our open markets are imported from Benin republic. It's possible their variety of maize seeds isn't hybrid but open pollinated. Their yield is impressive

No fresh maize buyer will pay you more for cultivating hybrid seeds. They will only pay more depending on the sizes of your maize cobs.

At the end of the day, you find a modern farmer who has spent a lot of money to procure HYBRID seeds selling at the same price with a local farmers that bought his seeds cheaply from the open market. That is obviously a loss to the modern farmer

I am not against farmers using hybrid maize seeds, but do we have other hybrid maize seeds in the market apart from premier seeds? I am not impressed by the yield gotten from premier seeds.

Pls drop your opinions. Thanks

Did u add fertilizer to it? I mean the oba super 6

The best way to make profit is to dry the maize. Fresh maize sales at the farm gate is not profitable. A 50 kg bag goes for 3,000-12,000 depending on the period.

Also, to make profit with dry maize 1. The spacing of the maize on the farm is important 2. Quality of seed used 3. The soil 4. If you have a very good soil you may not add fertiliser. 5. Storage facilities after harvest.

Dry maize are used by companies, pap makers, livestock farmers, etc. Therefore, the is market for same when sold at the right time.

Storage is a very big problem... hopefully we can discuss about it.

GreenAirCargo claims to be a company and doesn't even have a company account. Someone created a thread here: https://www.nairaland.com/4462161/ship-products-ease-china-nigeria#66864840 that he scammed him off 50k all in the name of procurement. This turns out to be highly suspicious because GreenAirCargo will ask you to make payment to an individual bank account named "Victor Ijoho Saaondo" which the other guy above referenced in the thread that he got scammed.

Again, his phone number 08032941127 appeared in the WHOIS of his website http://greenairbuy.com.ng which is also the same phone number this guy referenced in his scam alert thread.

My advice is that please use the services of GreenAirCargo at your own risk.

They just cleared my goods, so you saying they scam people is wrong if you have not done business with them. The only issue was delay and I feel that has been the issue with most agent but ur goods will get to u.
