Tension in The Cryptocurrency world as 3 Cryptocurrency Firms make moves towards Shutting Down Over New Anti-Money Laundering Regulations
Three cryptocurrency firms have affirmed that they will be shutting down over the introduction of the AMLD5 European Union regulation that’s taking effect from January 10th, 2020.
The first of the firms to announce that it will be shutting down was Bottle Pay, which provided its users a service to send cryptocurrency via social media accounts. The firm moves to shut down after “seeing huge growth in user numbers over the last few months” and raising $2 million in a seed funding round.

BottlePay on the reason behind their shutting down, stated '' it was because the new regulations would “alter the current user experience radically, and so negatively” that to maintain their “integrity as service providers” and to protect its users, it decided to shut down.

TheBlock has reported that a cryptocurrency mining pool and a bitcoin gaming platform, are shutting down over the same regulations. The mining pool, Simplecoin, published a notice on its website revealing it will shut down not to implement know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) checks on its service, to protect users’ privacy.

According to the platform, “When the laws come into effect, we would be forced to require you, the users, to identify yourselves for anti money-laundering purposes. We have been searching for solutions for a while, but it has become apparent that there is no way around it. Mining should to be available to anyone and we refuse to jeopardise our users’ privacy.”Christian Grieger, Simplecoin’s co-founder revealed that the firm has 42,000 users and two employees and that users have until December 20th to withdraw their funds and until December 31st to delete their account information.

Thus the legality or otherwise of cryptocurrency is dependent on the country/jurisdiction in question. Thus the fear that cryptocurrency will displace the traditional currency and thus put the government in an awkward position has led to some country to either ban or restrict the use of cryptocurrency.

Generally, creating a cryptocurrency friendly legislation to allow, encourage and promote the use and trade of bitcoin and other related cryptocurrencies will provide a strong boost to economic competitiveness. However if left unchecked, it will definitely constitute a threat to the fiat money of a country.

It should be noted that inasmuch as some countries do not make the usage of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies illegal, its status as money or commodity varies with differing regulatory implications. Thus while some countries/states have explicitly allowed the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, others have either banned or restricted it.

In Norhern African countires like Algeria, Morocco and Egypt, the purchase, use, sale and holding of cryptocurrency is prohibited. In Egypt specifically, it is prohibited under the Islamic law. In Nigeria, the Central Bank in January 2017, through a circular, informed the general public that transactions involving bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been banned . Subsequently a committee was set up by the CBN and Nigerian Deposit Insurance Commission and this led to the legalization of bitcoin usage and transactions in Nigeria.

In the Western countries like United States, Canada, Mexico etc, the use and trade of bitcoin is legal. Bitcoin ATM has been installed so many places for accessibility  and usage. other countries where use of bitcoin and related cryptocurrencies are legal include Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, etc.

In Brazil, the use and trade of bitcoin though not banned or restricted, is highly not encouraged.

In a nutshell, the two main reason why bitcoin may displace Naira in Nigeria are; the continuous depreciation in the value of Nigeria and the the appreciation in the value of bitcoin. Secondly is the ease of international payments using bitcoin unlike the use of the local currency and the debit card.

Nigeria is simply a perfect example of cryptocurrency -friendly country. The popularity and acceptability of Bitcoin in  will see no end in the country.

Binance cryptocurrency Exchange Finally Launches Latin American Fiat Gateway

Binance, one of the world most popular cryptocurrency exchange by virtue of trading volume and users, today announced the official launch of its fiat gateway for Latin America. The announcement was made during laBitConf, a major crypto event for Latin America held in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The new created platform, called Latamex, will run under the Binance Fiat Gateway and will permit Binance’s Latin American users to buy cryptocurrency directly in association with Settle Network, a Latin American digital asset liquidation network.

The new platform will firstly be launched in Argentina and Brazil, permitting the direct purchase of cryptocurrencies using Argentine pesos and Brazilian reals. Users will be able to buy Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), Ether (ETH) and Binance’s stablecoin Binance USD (BUSD).
Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao on this, stated unequivocally that;

"There is a strong need for cryptocurrencies in Latin America, especially for financial access. Roughly 50 percent of the Latin American population is unbanked, and Latamex is a response to our users’ demands and the current market climate. Working with Settle Network allows us to instantly bridge the gap between fiat and crypto for Latin American traders. We are continuing to build with our key partner, Settle Network, to bring wider accessibility of cryptocurrency in Latin America and will support additional local fiat currencies in the region in the future.” (statement quoted!!!)

Whereas only Argentine and Brazilian users can utilize the platform in the initial launch phase, Latamex's official website shows that the service will also be available to 13 more Latin American countries: Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Paraguay, Peru and Chile. Venezuela is however unbelievably absent in the list.
