So you are kidding no one by insinuating Abedi's performance was better. It simply wasn't. I doubt it was any better than Shearer's(Shearer did not the win award btw).

Now onto Weah winning the award partly due to his humanitarian role in the war, pls don't crack me up. Do you think they take sentiments into consideration when handing out these awards(most especially the Ballon D'or) ? Dude this is not the African Player of the Year award. This is the Ballon D'or the most respected individual award of the lot. They give these awards based solely on their performances ON THE PITCH(not off it as you claimed) and Weah won it. Even though some might not agree with winners, if we looked at it objectively, we could see the reason why they won the award in the first place.Abedi could have played til he reached Metusellah's age and still would not have won it.

Ofcourse there was a certain period in their career when Abedi was viewed as the better player(his three consecutive APY is testiment to that) but that does not mean he still seen as the overall better player. Del piero was also seen as superior to Zizou at one point in their career but do u hear anyone claiming he is superior now. Dude let's not deceive ourselves here Eto'o and Weah were better players. Abedi might have been more skilful but those two were better(Denilson is also superior to Kaka in terms of Skills but is he the better player?....Quaresma is superior to Figo in terms of skills but is he the better player?......I could go on and on).

Watching this match, it just occured to me how compared to previous eras defence and defenders in particular have gone down the drain. Little or no positional sense and tactical nous.

RuuDie: I concur. . . Barcelona didn't do much wrong over the two legs - it just wasn't to be. The team needs a bit of reinforcement, but to change the style of play, I'd oppose that. Their dominance and success over the years is testament to how potent this their tradition is and ultimately, they'll lose a handful of battles here and there but in the end they'll always be victorious - because after all is said and done, love 'em or hate 'em, we all love to see football played the way they play it!

I never said they should change their style. That will be stupid of them.
I think it is a big credit to their team that sides feel the only way to beat them is to pack the train,lorry,bus and house in front of their goal.
What I said is that a variety in style of play is needed against these types of teams. Nothing drastic is needed.

Also I don't recall you playing three tough matches in a row as you have done this season(chelsea-Madrid-Chelsea)so failing to win three matches is not as big a deal as you make it.
The problem is not any deeper. You will still win 95% of your matches next season but a plan B must be found against teams whose sole and only aim is to pack the Train.

Abedi was ahead of Weah in the late 80's and early 90's but overall Weah was simply the better player. Granted the change rules helped the likes of Sammy kuffour and Kanu to place highly on the list even with that Abedi was never ever going to win either award. Abedi pele was a more skilful player than Eto'o,,Weah,Drogba and Okocha but is simply not the first two players I mentioned. (I mean, imagine Chelsea and Real Madrid hitting us on the break all the time). Our defending, especially from set-pieces as well as our man marking must be worked on.
