Politics / Use Recovered Loot For People’s Welfare, Kukah Tells FG by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 5:19am On Jul 27, 2016
The Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Mathew Kukah, has urged the Federal Government to convince the people that the proceeds recovered from corrupt individuals are channelled to projects that will have direct impact on the masses.

Kukah, who described corruption as a symptom of a sickness afflicting the country, expressed worry in the way the corruption fight was being fought by the Federal Government.

He lamented that from the look of things, it was obvious that many people were behaving as if the fight against corruption was the fight of a single individual.

Matthew-Kukah

Kukah spoke as a guest of the book readers’ club of the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The clergy and social commentator also read from his book,Witness to Justice, urging Nigerians not to be misled by the option of coup as an alternative to democracy.

He said government must also engage the people to give them a hope of a better future.

“Corruption is a symptom of sickness. What that sickness means is, almost or the total absence of government influence and impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. This is just another name for corruption. It is very bad that there are no processes.

“It is over one year, we have still not started the trial of people who misappropriated the $2.1bn. We still have over $198bn to find since the President (Muhammadu Buhari) himself confirmed that about $200bn has gone through corruption.

“So, to me, it is a question of strategy, a question of thinking, a question of rethinking and a question of defining our objectives. Nigerians have to become convinced that the proceeds of corruption will be to the benefit of their own lives. If they don’t get that fact, it won’t earn their support. So far, we are behaving like fighting corruption is the business of one man.

“There are people in power who believe they are not accountable to the people, but everybody should know now that the solution to our problem does not lie in anybody threatening anybody with a coup.”

Foreign Affairs / Theresa May Prepares To Take Over As Brexit PM by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 12:25pm On Jul 13, 2016
Theresa May becomes Britain’s second female Prime Minister on Wednesday, taking over from David Cameron whose career was ended by the seismic Brexit referendum, with the daunting task of leading the country out of the EU.

Cameron, who has been premier for six years, will say his goodbyes at his last question-and-answer session in parliament before tendering his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

The monarch will then call on May, interior minister in the outgoing government, to form a cabinet.

The newly-anointed prime minister is expected to begin announcing her ministerial choices before the day is out, including a Brexit minister in charge of leading negotiations with the EU on a new relationship.

Finance minister George Osborne, who fought hard to remain in the EU, is expected to lose his job, with May sharply criticising his economic legacy earlier this week.

Women are expected to secure several top jobs, with current energy minister Amber Rudd and international development minister Justine Greening tipped for lead roles along with foreign minister Philip Hammond and Brexit campaigner Chris Grayling, who is leader of the House of Commons.

Johnson among cabinet hopefuls

Friends of former London mayor Boris Johnson told The Telegraph newspaper he also hoped to play a “significant role”, two weeks after he dramatically withdraw from the race to succeed Cameron at the last minute.

Investors will be watching May’s first days in office closely but with greater optimism after the pound, which fell by up to 15 per cent against the dollar and the euro after the Brexit vote, began to rebound.

EU leaders have said they expect May to move quickly to formalise Britain’s divorce from the union.

In a sign of their anxiousness to move ahead, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will hold a summit in August on the Brexit vote, the French presidency said Wednesday.

May has indicated however she will not be rushed into triggering the formal procedure for Brexit.

The steely 59-year-old vicar’s daughter will be Britain’s only second female premier after Margaret Thatcher, with whom she is now inevitably being compared.

She faces a stiff task in bridging Conservative Party divisions and dealing with a potential economic downturn.

Her other mammoth challenges include keeping pro-EU Scotland from bidding for independence in order to stay in the 28-nation bloc, and weaving new trade and diplomatic alliances with the US, India and other powers to prepare for a post-EU future.

Clouds lift

May campaigned, albeit quietly, with Cameron for Britain to stay in the EU and she will have to convince eurosceptics within her party and the country at large that she has no intention of backtracking on the June 23 vote.

“Brexit means Brexit — and we’re going to make a success of it,” the politician reputed to be a tough negotiator has said.

After six years in office, Cameron announced he would resign the day after the referendum. He will chiefly be remembered for organising a ballot aimed at stopping his party “banging on about Europe” and then spectacularly failing to clinch it.

He sought to deflect that criticism in an interview with the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, saying: “As I leave, I hope people will see a stronger country, a thriving economy and more chances to get on in life.

May’s bid for his job accelerated as key proponents of Britain’s EU withdrawal, including Johnson, stepped back or were vanquished in a head-spinning round of political bloodletting.

The vote exposed deep inequalities in British society, which May has vowed to address, and plunged the opposition Labour party in turmoil.

On Wednesday, Owen Smith became the second Labour MP to announce a bid to try to oust embattled party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is resisting pressure to resign over his lacklustre campaigning for Britain to remain in the EU.

Leopard-skin heels

May has been a tough-talking interior minister for the past six years and is something of an unknown quantity internationally, although she has received ringing endorsements from party colleagues and a normally sceptical British tabloid press.

The daughter of a Church of England pastor, May is a cricket fan with a sober, well-mannered demeanour who lists her hobbies as cooking and walking.

She is well liked in and around Maidenhead, the well-to-do commuter town west of London that she has represented in parliament since 1997.

“She will get this country back on its feet,” said 69-year-old Jim Charlesworth, a neighbour of May and her banker husband Philip.

Martin Trepte, editor of the Maidenhead Advertiser, the local newspaper, said, “She’s a mature, grown-up, no-nonsense politician. She knows her stuff.”

She shows a flash of flamboyance with a colourful shoe collection – particularly her leopard-skin heels.

Politics / Mr. President, Nothing Is Working Oh! by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 11:58am On Jul 13, 2016

I must speak out at this time about the numerous difficulties facing Nigerian citizens. Nigeria is a great country whose natural and human resources should be enough for national development; sadly, today, the people are, instead, experiencing the worst economic hardship in the history of the country.

Over the years, Nigerians have witnessed so many unfulfilled political promises at all levels of government and I frankly thought that this government of change would be an exception. The responsibilities of any government include, among others, security of lives and property and the welfare of the citizens. Considering how the current government came on board on March 28, 2015, one would have expected it to actually make a reasonable impact and justify the change that Nigerians voted for. Regrettably, though there is a change, it cannot be adjudged as a positive change.

It is no longer news that one dollar can never be equivalent to one naira as promised during the campaigns. What about the promise of free meal per day to Nigerian pupils? Can I even forget the promise to bring back our Chibok girls? What about the promise of wiping out the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the north-eastern part of Nigeria? It was also promised that unemployed Nigerian youths would be paid a monthly stipend of N5,000? Today, none of these promises has been fulfilled one year on the saddle. Now, the bigger problems of the Niger Delta Avengers and murderous Fulani herdsmen are on the front burner and the government of change is under-estimating the suffering of the people.

Anytime I reminisce on how electricity generation drastically improved in the incipient stage of President Buhari’s administration, I begin to wonder with utmost curiosity if I am still living in the same country that I was living in, or not.

Today, the scarcity or exorbitant cost of foreign exchange for importation of raw materials by local industries is affecting Nigerian industries and the galloping inflation is biting hard on many Nigerians. There is also retrenchment of employees in the private sector without any job being created by the government. Some companies are even shutting down operations and except an urgent action is taken by the Federal Government, more jobs and companies are set to go in like manner.

Even civil servants are not unaffected as salaries are not being paid regularly, yet they are expected to put in their best at all times. Again, kerosene and petrol pump prices are at all time high and the people are the worst for it this time round.

The common man can no longer afford anything good all because of the exorbitant increase in the prices of all consumer goods. When there was “corruption”, the common man was able to feed himself but now that “corruption” is assumed to be no more, they can no longer feed themselves. What an irony!

Sincerely, Mr President, nothing is working well for most Nigerians who lack access to power and its trappings and waking up to this reality and acting swiftly to avoid more sufferings is your constitutional duty. You asked for it. You must do it faithfully.

Foreign Affairs / I Am The Law And Order – Trump by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 10:13pm On Jul 11, 2016
Donald Trump proclaimed himself the “law and order candidate” Monday, emphasizing increased threats to police and declaring only he can keep Americans safe in a nation reeling from gun violence.

“I am the law and order candidate,” the Republican party’s presumptive presidential nominee said in a speech in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The declaration, reminiscent of remarks made by former president Richard Nixon, came as Trump highlighted recent killings including the horrific shooting deaths of five Dallas officers in a gunman’s sniper-like assault.

“The attack on our Dallas police is an attack on our country. Our whole nation is in mourning,” Trump said, as he pledged to “fight” for law enforcement personnel and ensure they have Washington’s full backing.

“Without safety we have nothing.”

Trump, who veered from his speech on veterans issues to discuss the violence, also stressed that he is the candidate of compassion.

“But you can’t have true compassion without providing safety for the citizens of our country,” Trump said.

The billionaire political neophyte’s reaction to the latest US events has been closely scrutinized in recent days.

Often quick to lash out on Twitter or offer scathing critiques, Trump has largely steered clear of aggressive criticism after the deaths of two black men last week at the hands of police officers.

He halted his campaigning for a day after Thursday’s Dallas police murders, as did his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

But on Monday Trump insisted he was uniquely prepared to back the nation’s police forces, and hammered Clinton as “weak, ineffective” and pandering.

“America’s police and law enforcement personnel are what separates civilization from total chaos and the destruction of our country as we know it,” Trump said.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former 2016 presidential candidate and a potential Trump running mate, was on board with Trump’s message.

“We need a president who once again puts law and order at the top of the priority of the presidency of this country,” Christie told the crowd shortly before Trump spoke.

Trump’s declaration echoed the pronouncements of former president Richard Nixon, who as a candidate declared he would be tough on crime.

“I pledge to you, we shall have order in the United States,” Nixon said in a 1968 campaign ad.

Business / MTN, Glo, Others To Lose N109tn To Whatsapp, Facebook – Report by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 9:48pm On Jul 11, 2016
The growing importance of social media platforms and apps as well as Internet voice applications has hit telecommunications firms hard, claiming a chunk of their revenue, OZIOMA UBABUKOH writes

The telecommunications industry in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is projected to lose a total of N109tn ($386bn) in voice revenue to the growing usage of Over-the-Top Internet voice applications by 2018.

United Kingdom-based research and analytics company, Ovum, stated in a report that “the $386bn loss will accrue over a period of six years – between 2012 and 2018 – from Nigerian customers using OTT voice applications.”

Checks by The PUNCH show that the increasing rise of the OTT players who provide voice and Short Message Services, or apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger and Viber, is currently eating deep into the voice revenue of telecommunications companies in the country by more than 50 per cent.

The impact of these new services is further explained in a report by Credit Suisse.

In the report, the multinational financial services company said, “Proliferation of Over-the-Top content services such as Skype and WhatsApp, among others, could trigger more than a whopping 50 per cent revenue hit on Nigerian telecoms companies’ voice services in the coming months.”

A report by the Nigerian Communications Commission also indicated that the OTT could be a threat to traditional telecoms model by licensed operators.

“To further worsen this issue, the traditional operators still have to make significant investments in upgrading their networks to handle the increasing volume of data generated by the same providers of OTT services,” the NCC report read in part.

The Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umaru Danbatta, at a forum with telecoms operators recently, ruled out licensing OTT, thereby foreclosing its regulation.

However, findings by our correspondent showed that the monthly revenue accruing to the telecoms operators from the provision of voice services to the owners of the over 151 million mobile telephone lines witnessed an estimated 31 per cent crash in six months.

According to findings, the aggregate voice revenue by the operators, including the Global System for Mobile Communications, Code Division Multiple Access and fixed networks fell from N241.6bn in December of 2015 to N166.4bn in June.

Experts say the OTT trend and the declining Average Revenue Per User occasioned by subscribers’ low purchasing power in the face of increasing cost of operations is responsible for the fall in operators revenue.

“Reduction in the ARPU has been partly traced to the emergence of the Over-the-Top players, which operators said are eating into their profitability potential,” the President, Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, said in an interview.

Analysts told our correspondent that while telecoms companies in Nigeria had become wary of the effect of such OTT platforms, the revenue loss was only going to get worse.

This was also the position of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation at its OTT conference in London last month, where it said it was conducting a research into the dynamics that could stop the trend.

“The CTO’s plan is to carry out a study to understand the market dynamics and policy and regulatory challenges of Over-The-Top services, both in the context of their impact on traditional business models and of opportunities for innovation and stimulating economic growth,” it stated.

At the same time, major operators such MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat in the country’s $38bn telecoms market said they were also struggling to counter a trend in which the prices of basic voice and data services were declining.

MTN Nigeria said that OTT content services had a “cannibalising effect” on network operators’ voice and data revenue, because they provide “free” services, which duplicate services already provided by network operators such as voice calls and SMS.

According to the firm, a ready example is WhatsApp, which provides free instant messaging services as an alternative to text messaging services provided by mobile network operators.

“It (WhatsApp) has also launched a free voice service,” the company’s Public Relations and Protocol Manager, Mr. Funso Aina, said, adding, “The point to note in this argument is that OTTs allow users to send unlimited texts, images, video and audio messages free of charge, using their current data plans.”

According to him, the problem is that these services are provided using network infrastructure of the operators, but without commensurate compensation to operators.

Aina added, “At the same time, they are denying operators of revenue to grow their networks, thereby impacting on service delivery and long-term sustainability.

“For instance, to date, MTN has invested over $15bn in building its network in Nigeria. You can now imagine an OTT leveraging on the network to deliver its content without investing a kobo locally. The impact on revenue is huge.

“Furthermore, because these entities are not licensed, and because they have not built any infrastructure locally, they do not have the same costs as licensed operators.

“They do not pay taxes, they do not employ any people locally, and indeed, they have no local presence whatsoever, meaning they do not make any contribution to our economy and their services are denying those who make contributions of income.”

The MTN public relations manager stated that it was the view held by most within the industry, but noted that “at MTN, we are looking to find win-win solutions for all stakeholders.”

Aina, however, dismissed the allegation that some telecoms operators had continued to dispute a view that they were making enough money from their higher paying data services to offset the loss of voice and messaging revenue.

He explained, “Every service is provided at a cost, and we cannot subsidise one service through revenue from another; so, the argument as to whether loss of revenue from one is being offset by another is really not a fruitful argument.

“The important thing is that services must be produced efficiently and all stakeholders, including our customers, must get fair value for their investments.”

An analyst at Ovum, Mr. Emeka Obiodu, who shared Aina’s views, said, “The use of Voice over Internet Protocol will grow increasingly over the next five years to become the underlying technology for delivering voice over telecoms infrastructure.

“Blocking these services, entering into alliances, or trying to out-compete the OTT players are not going to stem the tide.”

Obiodu said that a number of factors drove the growth of the OTTs in global demand, including improvements in the availability and speed of broadband networks, the growing capability and affordability of wireless devices such as smartphones and tablets, and continued dominance of social media.

The Research Director, Gartner, Mr. Sandy Shen, said, “The impact seen today of the OTT VoIP services on the traditional revenue streams of telecoms is just the tip of the iceberg.

“The OTT chat apps such as WhatsApp and WeChat are putting more pressure on telcos than VoIP services because they offer social networks that retain user loyalty and stickiness. That is pushing people to go for smaller voice and text plans, though they still need a big data plan.”

PriceWaterhouseCooper, a global consultancy firm, however, said there was a way out.

It suggested that the telecoms operators should develop a successful strategic response to the rise of OTT competitors.

“They must first take stock of the considerable assets and capabilities they already possess and determine how they can leverage them in order to compete against, or work with the OTT players,” it stated.

Politics / Police Foil Plan To Attack NLNG Pipeline In Rivers by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 8:46pm On Jul 11, 2016

Politics / I’m Ready To Return N400m – Metuh by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 12:00am On Jul 01, 2016
A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, has said he’s in support of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

He said he’s already searching for money to refund to the national treasury, the N400m he was paid by the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan for image laundering.

Metuh is currently undergoing trial for allegedly collecting the money from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sabo Dasuki(retd.).

His prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, has reached advanced stage.

The N400m was said to be part of money meant for the purchase of arms to wage the war against insecurity in the North-East.

Metuh, in a statement issued by his lawyer, Mr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) in Abuja on Thursday, said he was ready to refund the entire money.

The statement was titled, “Why our client (Chief Olisa Metuh) is offering to refund the N400 million – Counsel.”

Metuh said that his earlier proposal to refund the N400m released to him by former President Jonathan, was because he didn’t know where the money came from.

The statement said, “We want to restate that at the time the money was released to him after his presentation to the ex-President, our client had no knowledge of the source, a fact that is now obvious from the evidence of the prosecution and defence witnesses.

“Our client had every cause to believe that the money was from the ex-President to whom he made presentation, received directives and rendered report and accounts accordingly.

“When the matter first came up and Metuh was invited to the Office of the National Security Adviser in December 2015, he requested to know the source of the money and expressed his readiness to make refunds if it was from government coffers, not minding that the money had been expended as directed by the former President.

“Officials at ONSA never got back to him as they promised, until his arrest by the EFCC in January 2016.”

He said that it was during his prosecution that he got to know the source of the fund.

Sports / I’m Joining Manchester United – Ibrahimovic by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 11:47pm On Jun 30, 2016
Zlatan Ibrahimovic said on Thursday that he is joining Manchester United, ending intense speculation about where the 34-year-old Swedish superstar forward will be playing next season.

Ibrahimovic, who was a free agent after ending a hugely successful stay at Paris Saint-Germain, becomes the second signing of new United boss Jose Mourinho after that of highly rated Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly from the Spanish outfit Villarreal.

“Time to let the world know. My next destination is Manchester United,” he wrote on Instagram and Facebook, complete with a picture of the United badge, as comments approving of the move — one of the biggest of the summer so far — flooded in.

Ibrahimovic reunites with Mourinho, after they enjoyed a good relationship while together at Italians Inter Milan, in what is likely to be the last major move in a career spanning five countries, starting with Malmo.

The towering Swede, who hit 62 goals in 116 international matches, had toyed with questioners for weeks about where he would be going and it will be his first time playing in the Premier League.

Ibrahimovic, who quit international football after Sweden crashed out of Euro 2016, has also played at Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and AC Milan during a career in which he has become as well known for his colourful personality as his prowess in front of goal.

He had also been linked with a return to AC Milan and his agent had suggested that Major League Soccer in the United States was another potential destination.

– Mourinho means ‘action’ –
Ibrahimovic will bolster a forward line at Old Trafford that looked desperately short of ideas, depth and talent last season under Louis van Gaal.

Wayne Rooney could well play deeper next season, in midfield, while French starlet Anthony Martial had to carry the United attack despite his tender years until youngster Marcus Rashford burst onto the scene late on in the campaign.

Van Gaal paid out heavily for his fellow Dutchman Memphis Depay, but he failed to deliver and spent the second half of the season on the bench.

Ibrahimovic said weeks ago that he knew where he would be playing football next season, but kept the football world guessing — typical of his mercurial personality.

“Yes, I have made my choice,” Ibrahimovic tantalisingly told a press conference at a training camp near Stockholm for the Swedish national team ahead of Euro 2016.

He said then that he had decided “long ago” but dodged all questions about whether that team was Manchester United, where Mourinho has replaced van Gaal after the Dutchman’s troubled two-year reign at Old Trafford came to a bitter end.

Asked a direct question about whether he had received an offer from United, Ibrahimovic’s hesitancy in answering spoke volumes.

He drummed his fingers on the table, smiled and eventually replied: “Let’s see what happens.”

“There are concrete offers from England, Italy… all countries. There are even some from outside Europe,” he said.

“There are many, many alternatives.”

But when asked whether he was tempted to work again with Mourinho, Ibrahimovic said only that they had worked well together at Inter Milan, where the Swede played from 2006 to 2009.

“You want action, you bring Mourinho. I believe he’s the man to bring them back to the top. Wherever he went he won,” the Swede said of Mourinho taking over at United, where he will be tasked with bringing back the glory days sorely missing under van Gaal.

There was no immediate word from United on Ibrahimovic.

Politics / Council Workers Cripple Activities In Ilorin Over Upaid Eight Months Salaries by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 5:25am On Jun 30, 2016
ILORIN—AGGRIEVED workers from the 16 local government areas of Kwara State, under the aegis of National Union of Local Government Employees of Nigeria, NULGE, yesterday crippled activities in Ilorin, the state capital, and barricaded the main entrance of the state Government House in Ilorin, over eight months unpaid salaries and other benefits.

Ahmed1

But the government through the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Communications, Dr Muideen Akorede, in a statement said, “While the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed administration sympathises with the workers regarding the unfortunate salary crises at the local government level, the Kwara State Government is not responsible for payment of local government workers’ salaries.

As everyone is aware, the local government arrears were caused by the huge drop in their Federal allocation from N2.7bilion to N1 bilion monthly.”

However, the protesting workers who displayed placards with different inscription, had converged as early as 8am at the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, secretariat, before marching through the popular Ahmadu Bello way and to the government house. Addressing reporters, state Secretary of NULGE, Abayomi Afolabi called for the scrapping of the second tier of government in the country, saying: “Worldwide 100 percent of the countries have local government areas. Only 45 percent of the countries in the world have state governments.”

Crime / 11 Fake Naval Officers Arrested In Rivers by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 4:46am On Jun 30, 2016
ELEVEN men suspected to be fake naval officers have been arrested in Rivers State.

The suspects were said to have been parading themselves as navy personnel with different ranks before they were apprehended around the Rukpokwu Police checkpoint.

The outgoing Commander NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Sanusi Ibrahim, who disclosed this on Wednesday while handing over the suspects to the Rivers Police Command, explained that they (suspects) disguised as “merchant navy” with the aim of defrauding the public and some companies in the state.

Ibrahim stated that the Nigerian Air Force had earlier detected the suspects and later arrested then.

The Air Force, according to Ibrahim, handed over the fake naval personnel to the Nigerian Navy.

He said, “On June 17, the Air Police of the 97 Special Operations Group, Nigerian Air Force Port Harcourt, arrested 11 civilians around the Rukpokwu police checkpoint parading themselves as naval personnel.

“The Air Force police later handed over the suspects to us (Navy) to enable us to ascertain if they were truly naval personnel, among other details.

“During investigation, the suspects claimed that they were merchant navy personnel, and which further findings revealed the organisation was fictitious.”

Literature / Must Read:the Cold Night by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 12:26pm On Jun 20, 2016
It was the early hours of the evening. The sun had set, as I stepped out for a walk. The evening air was cold and calm. The cool breeze blew a few strands from my already pinned up hair, which I tucked behind my ears but stubbornly came out which I didn’t mind.
It was may and the flower had began to bloom, tall trees with big shades were not hard to find. It was mostly important for lovers, cause it protected them from the sunlight in the day, and welcomed cool evening breeze at night. I smiled as a couple swinged their together hands, smiling as they passed by, saying things that only they can hear. I had no intention of getting into a relationship. My mother had turned my heart against men because of how my father who was never her husband, abandoned her when he found out that she was pregnant and she refused to abort it like they both had always done whenever she was pregnant with his baby. I have grown up with the bitterness in me towards men, and it has seen me through my year one and two in school, without dating any man. And now am in my third year still single. Some people had marked me a lesbian. Some lesbians had approached me, but I turned them down and stayed on my own.
I bent to pick a flower when I felt a slight tap on my shoulder. I briskly sprang up and sharply turned, And there stood Michael having a suprised look on his face. Michael was in my department, we see each other often, because we receive lecture in the same class, and had walked home together twice, before I started avoiding his presence. He was tall so handsome in fact cute, fair, muscular and got a little big s3xy brown eye ball that got a lot of long scanty but thick black eye lash to compliment it. It do lit up whenever he smile, but right now he wasn’t. I began to talk when he quickly said
Michael:you scared or something?
Me:no am….
My words failed me
Michael:what were you thinking.
He said still wearing the confused look on his face.
Me:oh nothing, was just in the moment.
I answered as my courage returned and I bent to pick up the red rose.
Michael:mind if I tag along?
He asked putting his hands in his pocket like he was shrinking him self and was expecting a “no”
Me:yea sure
I said bringing my pointed nose to the red rose.
Michael:seems you like flowers
Me:yea I do
Michael:I also do, but I don’t go handy_ panky with rose. Am alergic to it.
Me:oh uumm… sorry
I said but was blank. He made a move like he was about to stop me from doing something.
Michael:That does not mean you should do away with the rose. You can have it.
I almost laughed. Who said I wanted to throw it away or even got intention to, who cares if you even allergic to grass. I thought as I planted the rose by the side of my doughnut packed up hair.

We walked a while without saying a word. I stole a glance with the corner of my eyes. His hands were still in his pocket, different expression on his face, like he was trying to say something but was contemplating about it. It was funny, but I didn’t laugh. The silence that hovered around the air made the atmosphere so uncomfortable. His phone began to ring, we both looked at us, cause the sound took the silence unawares. He turned to look at the caller as he brought his phone out of his pocket. He frowned his face, ended the call and switched it off.
Michael:my elder sister
Elder sister my ass! One of his numerous girlfriend called him, and in order to look innocent to me, he switched it off and lied it was his elder sister. Oh he should know an idiot when he sees one, cause I am no idiot.
Me:you got an elder or kid brother.
I asked woundering how his brother looked like.
Michael:none. I and my dad are the only men in the family.
Me:oh I see. No sister?
Michael: no I got five sisters more like park pf wolves.
He said laughing for the first time they started strolling.
Me:oh so much sisters you got. Why call them that?
I feigned a smile.
Michael:am the only son and last child, so my sisters have always being so over protecting me right from day one!
I smiled not because what he said was funny, but because of the way his big brown eye became large, and his scanty but thick eye lash almost touching his well shaped thick black eye brow. He was neat to his nails, including every strand of his cut black hair. No pimples, no spot on his face, infact everything was in order. Indeed his sisters looked after him from day one.
We began to head back as he continue telling me about his family, about his sisters and how they had defended him, beating up two boys who beat and threatened him. And also how they sometimes used his face for make up practice.
The atmosphere changed, the air was free, I became comfortable and relaxed. Wasn’t being careful with my words. I said anything that came to my mind that moment. His hands was done hiding in his pocket. Shyness gone. He was not comfortable too I thought. I didn’t feign a smile anymore, instead I laughed a lot, because this time, everything he said was funny. I really didn’t wish for the evening to end. But it finally did as we stopped in front of my lodge. It was so fast which made me unhappy, I could also see the frown on his face, which indicate he felt the same way too
Michael:wow! Want an evening
He said tucking his hand in his back pocket.
Me:thanks for the evening I said, still wishing the evening never came to an end.
Michael:no tina I should be the one saying that.
He pulled his hand from his pocket and began to walk closer to were I was standing.
Micheal:if you had refused me a stroll with you, I would have missed such nice evening.
He stopped and looked directly into my eyes without blinking, covering the remaining space between us. My heart began to beat faster, goosebumps feeling, and my stomach creating noise which I know was not hunger, but I can’t tell what for and why. He took my already sweaty palm
Michael:I have never had such for a long time. Thanks for letting me remember how it feels, so I should be the one saying “thank you”.
He released my hands slowly and held my jaw, bringing his face closer to mine, making me feel his breath on my nose. I didn’t know why I didn’t move away, oh no I didn’t want to, whatever he was about to do now, I really wanted it. I don’t know why, but I just wanted it and that’s all. He planted a soft kiss on my forehead, it was so cold and the breeze made it cooler, like it was also enjoying the moment.
Micheal:the night is kind of cold, please make the blanket your friend tonight.
He stepped back smilling as he tucked his hands in his pocket again.
Michael:goodnight
And with that, he left.
I stood in the silence of the night, looking at the empty space infront of me where Michael had stood earlier. My knees were trembling like I got no bones in them.
No man has ever came close to me that way, never in my life. Talk more of holding my hands or touching my face, not even to dare kiss my forehead! I closed the door and rested my back on it. My eyes fell on my mum’s picture on my dressing table. I quickly looked away. I felt so guilty. I was feeling funny for a reason I dont know

What is wrong with me? I asked my self. What is really wrong with me?

Culture / BIM Accuses MASSOB Of Collecting N500M Bribe To Halt Kanu's Freedom by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 6:14pm On Dec 17, 2015
Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, led Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) has accused the leadership of the new Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Comrade Uchenna Madu of collecting N500 million from the Federal Government to hinder the release of Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

Vanguard reports that a member of the BIM, Mr. Sunny Okoroafor, who made the allegation against the leader of the new MASSOB, advised him to return the money to the federal government. Okoroafor claimed that BIM had evidence of where Madu collected millions of Naira to stop Biafra protests for the release of the director of radio Biafra and leader of the Independent People Of Biafra (IPOB). Reacting quickly to the accusation, the new MASSOB, in a statement issued on Wednesday, December 16, by its secretary, Ibem Ugwoke Ibem, denied the claim and described it as baseless. The secretary challenged Okoroafor to make his alleged evidence public in three days or MASSOB will expose the secret of Uwazuruike’s alleged evil. Ibem who said the allegation shows the reflection of a sinking group seeking where to hold, went ahead to describe the allegation as “paid black mail.” The new MASSOB secretary condemned what it themed; “calculated attempt by the Uwazuruike’s BIM to discredit and blackmail the MASSOB leader.” “This distractions, false impression and blackmail will never distract, frustrate or hinder our leader, Uchenna Madu from his consistent and determined spirit of non-violence Biafra actualization and continue to press for Nnamdi Kanu’s release. “The new leader, Uchenna Madu has never collected any money from Federal Government. “The release of Kanu is paramount in MASSOB agenda now. We are not deterred by blackmail and negative impression being circulated by BIM,” he said. Recall that Chief Uwazuruike, recently changed the name of the former MASSOB under his leadership to Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) following the violence perpetuated by the group during protests. The decision was not unconnected with his reported removal as the national leader of MASSOB by the members. It has been war of words since the development, even as reports have it that MASSOB recently threatened via a text message to expose alleged immoralities committed by Chief Uwazurike.

Culture / Uwazuruike Accuses Kanu Of Destroying Biafra by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 4:52pm On Dec 17, 2015
Ralph Uwazurike, the leader of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), on December 10 said Nnamdi Kanu and others emerged to destroy the Biafra struggle for their selfish interest. He said that some politicians were financing pro-Biafran splinter groups to fight him. According to him such groups include Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra, the Biafra Zionist Movement, and the Uchenna Madu-led faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra. The BIM leader spoke at a press conference in Onitsha, Anambra state, through the Nnewi South Regional Administrator, Tony Nwodo.
Uwazurike alleged that the recent IPOB/MASSOB protests which led to the deaths of some activists in parts of the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones were planned by the Uchenna Madu-led MASSOB. This, he said, was done to put his name in the mud.
He said: “They were expelled members of MASSOB because of anti-MASSOB activities and they had no other option but to rush to politicians who now sponsor them to discredit me and the MASSOB members. And because they have infiltrated MASSOB through Uchenna Madu, we had to form the Biafra Independent Movement, BIM.
“People don’t know that Uchenna Madu and Nnamdi Kanu emerged to destroy the Biafra struggle for their selfish interest.

Politics / Nigeria, Biafra Can Successfully Function Separately by CHIDIEBEREE(f): 4:40pm On Dec 17, 2015
biafra-caBiafra is different, separate and distinct from Nnamdi Kanu It is wrong to think of Biafra as war. Biafra does not mean war or bloodshed. Biafra is different, separate and distinct from Nnamdi Kanu. While Biafra is simply a decision for self-determination, Nnamdi Kanu is a person. A person is a human being with rights that should be protected under human right laws. But that is a topic for another piece. Once upon a time, there was USSR. USSR underwent a process called ‘perestroika’ (‘rearrangement’) which led to the break out of several countries like Ukraine and Lithuania. There were other entities that existed up to 80ties that broke into the Czech Republic, Slovenia. People must be allowed options they feel would work for them The existence of Biafra does not mean other Nigerians will not be able to live or do business in the South East of Nigeria whose states make up Biafra. It only means they will have their own government and determine their economic policies. They will still be part of ECOWAS! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. There is nothing treasonable about demanding for that or protesting for that within peaceful guidelines. It is actually a DEMOCRATIC demand. People must be allowed options they feel would work for them. Not allowing that freedom to choose means you’re keeping them in bondage. Any group within its peaceful call for self-n-successfully.
