Biafran group identified as Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has disclosed its intention to boycott the forthcoming general elections in the country.

The group has also appealed to the southern and middle belt in the country to join it in its plan to ensure that the election does not hold.

The group made this appeal during its rally which was carried out on Tuesday, to mark the 17th anniversary of the movement.

News has it that, the rally which took place in Awka, Anambra State was also used by the group to express its opinion on the July 14th governorship election in Ekiti State in which Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the APC emerged winner of the gubernatorial seat.

The group alleged that the election was massively rigged in favour of the ruling All Progressives Party which makes it worrisome on the free and fair conduct of the forthcoming general elections slated for next year.

The family of an Australian-American woman who was killed by a former Minneapolis police officer last year after she called 911 to report a possible assault filed a lawsuit Monday alleging the officer was inexperienced and unfit for duty. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, alleges Justine Ruszczyk Damond's civil rights were violated when she was shot July 15, 2017, by former Officer Mohamed Noor.

The lawsuit also claims Noor and his partner at the time, Officer Matthew Harrity, conspired to cover up the facts surrounding the shooting and made a conscious decision not to activate their body cameras.

"The result: A nightmare come to life, without the evidence the MPD ordered its officers to collect and where, as a consequence, those same officers are free to speak (or not speak) with impunity, furthering their own interests rather than the interests of justice," the lawsuit says, referring to the Minneapolis Police Department as MPD.

The shooting, which drew international attention, cost the police chief her job and forced major revisions to the department's policy on body cameras.
The lawsuit, filed by Damond's father, John Ruszczyk, seeks monetary damages. It names both officers, the city, and the current and former police chief as defendants. Justine Damond's legal name is Justine Ruszczyk, but she had been using the last name of her fiance, Don Damond, professionally.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige has faulted the stand of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the constitution and inauguration of the board members of federal agencies and parastatal under his ministry.

The APC chairman, in a letter, had given the labour minister one week within which to constitute the board of the parastatals and agencies under his ministry.

The parastatals and agencies are the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), National Directorate of Employment (NDE), National Productivity Centre (NPC), and Michael Imoudu Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS).

But, Ngige, in his reply, explained why he would not constitute the Board of NSITF within the one week ultimatum given by Oshiuomhole. He expressed disbelief that such a letter could emanate from the APC chairman.

Russia's FSB security services on Friday raided a top space research centre in a probe into staff alleged to be spying for the West, the Kommersant daily reported, citing sources.

"This morning, the FSB raided offices of staff at the Central Research Institute of Machine-Building," which is a subsidiary of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, Kommersant reported, citing sources in law enforcement agencies.

It reported that the FSB carried out raids in the town of Korolyov outside Moscow after finding out that Western security services had information on "secret hypersonic developments by Russian industry."

Sources told the newspaper the probe was over "high treason," with around 10 people suspected of "cooperation with Western secret services."

The Reformed – All Progressives Congress (R-APC) has said it is amusing that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is now hopping from door to door of its members begging them not to dump the party.

The APC faction said that despite the recent consultations and promise of juicy carrots to R-APC members by President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the APC that it was already too late to stop the R-APC from its planned defection.

R-APC stated this on Sunday in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kassim Afegbua.

The statement came on the heels of the perceived high powered consultation Buhari and the APC leadership have been having with some leaders of the R-APC.

A monitored report had claimed that the APC during a meeting last week with R-APC senators and members of the House of Representatives, had begged them to jettison plans of dumping APC and promised them automatic tickets to contest the 2019 elections.

Also last Thursday, President Buhari was said to have during a closed door meeting with Senate President Bukola Saraki, at the Presidential Villa, pleaded with him not to leave the APC, assuring him of retaining the Senate presidency in 2019.

Scientists have developed a waterproof wearable patch, which when applied directly to the skin, absorbs sweat and within seconds assesses how much cortisol — stress hormone -- a person is producing.

Clinical tests that measure cortisol, which rises and falls naturally throughout the day, provide an objective gauge of emotional or physical stress and can help doctors tell if a patient's adrenal or pituitary gland is working properly.

While current methods require waiting several days for results from a lab, with the novel patch, a user just needs to sweat enough to glisten, apply the patch and connect it to a device for analysis, giving the results within seconds.

"We are particularly interested in sweat sensing, because it offers non-invasive and continuous monitoring of various biomarkers for a range of physiological conditions," said lead author, Onur Parlak from Stanford University, US.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Hon Isaac Onuh, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Onuh, who was the Managing Director of the Kogi State Water Board, stated that he took the decision to quit the party to save his political career which could be jeopardised by remaining with the APC, adding that the party was being insensitive to the plight of the people.

Onuh, who was accompanied by thousands of his supporters, said the former governor of the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris played major roles in his defection to the PDP.
Addressing a crowd of supporters at the PDP Secretariat in Abejukolo, headquarters of Omala local government area of the state, he described his defection as a homecoming and a “removal of the cobweb that has hitherto covered his eyes for so many years.”

According to him, he was led astray by anger over some misgivings then in the PDP, saying he had come back to help the PDP which he was a founding member to regain power.

“I left the PDP because of some misgivings. But having realised that you cannot because of annoyance abandon your house. PDP is my baby, I was part of its formation and I supported its growth both in Kogi and Omala Local Government Area.
“The veil that covered my eyes has finally been removed. I went to APC but I discovered that the party has no human face. There are hardships across the land, people are dying because of hunger. I have come back to help put smiles on our people.

The Kylian Mbappe will donate money earned from featuring in the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia to a sports charity that work with disabled and hospitalised children, Premiers de Cordee.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to “mistake the rigging in Ekiti as acceptance by Nigerians”.

PDP warned that what happened in Ekiti on Saturday 14, must not repeat itself in the presidential election 2019.

The opposition party said it was “shameful for President Muhammadu Buhari, who claims to be an anti-corruption champion, to glee over acts of electoral corruption that can truncate our democratic process.”

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party said it found as strange that President Buhari could not “condemn the emasculation and subversion of the will of Ekiti people and the stealing of another party’s victory by brute force.”

PDP also noted the “unsavoury statements by the Presidency, celebrating the subjugation of Ekiti people as a stamp for President Buhari, wherein it further boasted of a triumph for the President in the 2019 general election.”

The statement reads, “If for President Buhari and the APC, the subjugation of the people, as witnessed in Ekiti, amounts to an election, then the nation is headed to a serious crisis, as such will be resisted with all legitimate force available within our laws in the defence of our nation’s democracy...

A man has died after being attacked during his own birthday celebrations.

Stephen McGiffen had been marking his 36th birthday in Oldham, Greater Manchester, on Thursday night.

But he was found lying on the ground with serious head injuries in the early hours of Friday morning after being assaulted.

Mr McGiffen had been taken to hospital and his family had been sitting with him.

But he had died on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police said.
Two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further enquiries.

Meanwhile, police asked to hear from any witnesses who have not yet spoken to them.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wilkinson said: "Our investigation has today taken a tragic turn with a family losing Stephen, someone so precious to them.

"We will continue to do whatever we can to support them and hope we will be able to provide them with the answers they are currently looking for.

"What we know so far is that there were a lot of people that came out of the bars and pubs on Yorkshire Street to witness the incident - if you haven't yet got in touch with us, we need you to do so to tell us what you saw.

"Did you see an altercation between several people near to the Old Bank pub? Do you know who is responsible for Stephen losing his life?

A 23-year-old jobless uncle, Everness Onyebuchi, who allegedly defiled his eight-year-old niece, was on Thursday remanded at Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, who refused to take the plea of the accused, ordered that he should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be the discretion of the court.

“Casefile should be documented and sent to the office of the DPP for advice,’’ she said.

Onyebuchi, who resides with the girl’s parents at Oshodi, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

The Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that accused committed the offence in May at the girl parents’ residence.
He said that the accused severally had canal knowledge of his niece.

“The accused had sexual intercourse with the girl on several occasions,’’ Ayorinde said.
The prosecutor said that the father of the girl accommodated the accused when he needed a place to stay.

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, has attacked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government following the use of force against the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose.

The organization wondered why a sitting Government could be physically attacked by security agencies of the Federal Government.

It described the situation as an international embarrassment.

On Wednesday morning at just before 3 o'clock, officers responded to a home on Main Street in Rivesville to serve an arrest warrant on Jackson Yeager, 25.

Officers said when they showed up, they found an explosive device belonging to Chelsea Stewart, 26. The State Police Explosive Technician was dispatched to the scene and detonated the device, according to Rivesville Police.

According to the criminal complaint officers said, "the device looked like a stick of dynamite with a wick coming outside the device."

While searching the home, officers said they discovered marijuana, meth, three loaded guns, and drug items.

Stewart has been charged with possession of a destructive device and distribution of meth.

UC professor Vesselin Shanov co-directs UC's Nanoworld Laboratories with research partner and UC professor Mark Schulz. Together, they harness their expertise in electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering to craft "smart" materials that can power electronics.

"The major challenge is translating these beautiful properties to take advantage of their strength, conductivity and heat resistance," Shanov said.

Schulz said manufacturing is at the cusp of a carbon renaissance. Carbon nanotubes will replace copper wire in cars and planes to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency. Carbon will filter our water and tell us more about our lives and bodies through new biometric sensors.

Carbon will replace polyester and other synthetic fibers. And since carbon nanotubes are the blackest objects found on Earth, absorbing 99.9 percent of all visible light, you might say carbon is the new black.

Doctors at a children’s hospital in Boston have developed an experimental transplant in infants with damaged hearts to give them a fighting chance for a healthy life.

The novel treatment idea, used by these doctors first in March 2015, involves injecting mitochondria from a healthy part of the body into the damaged region of an ailing heart. Two doctors working at Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts— pediatric surgeon Dr Sitaram Emani, and scientist who studies similar cases in adults Dr James McCully — worked on developing this procedure for cases in which it could be used as a last resort.

In the only human trials for a mitochondrial transplant so far, these medical scientists have treated twelve babies that had next to no hope for survival except for the experimental procedure. The New York Times reported that eight of its beneficiaries came out of it alive, with recovered, healthier hearts than their prognosis otherwise predicted. The report added that 65 percent of similar babies who could have but did not receive the treatment had died, with none showing improvement in cardiac function thereafter.

A report in The New York Times follows the story of the procedure's latest beneficiary, 2-month-old Georgia Bowen, who in minutes after being born, showed symptoms of a congenital heart defect, and in need of surgery. Her doctors think she could have had a heart attack while still in her mother's womb. A large portion of her profoundly damaged heart was found to be dead or weakly-active muscles, which led to her cardiac arrest. The surgery, being an invasive procedure, was said to have added to the scarred tissue in her heart, compounding matters.

Russell Simmons in 2016. At least a dozen women have accused him of sexual misconduct, including one whose first-person account was published on Tuesday.

Another woman has accused Russell Simmons of rape, the latest of at least a dozen allegations of sexual misconduct against the hip-hop mogul that began surfacing last year.

In a largely first-person account published by Variety on Tuesday, Alexia Norton Jones said that in 1990, she and Mr. Simmons, a co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, went on a first date, at the end of which he invited her to see his new Manhattan apartment.

Once inside, she said, he quickly attacked her. “I remember being pushed up against a wall,” Ms. Jones said. “He pulled my dress up. I must have said no seven to 10 times.” Ms. Jones said she finally acquiesced, and then left, shaken.

Ms. Jones, a granddaughter of the founders of the publishing house W.W. Norton and a daughter of Clarence B. Jones, a lawyer and confidant for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said that she and Mr. Simmons ran in the same social circles. After the encounter, “there was nobody to tell, because we had the same friends,” she said, adding that she grew depressed and her sense of self-esteem “eroded.”

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose was on Wednesday reportedly teargassed by security operatives in the Government House, Ado-Ekiti.
His Special Adviser on Public Communication and New Media, Lere Olayinka who confirmed the incident on Twitter said Fayose was teargassed by the policemen who laid siege at the Governement House and was now receiving treatment at the Government House’s clinic.
Lere on Twitter wrote, ”Gov Fayose, a few minutes ago escaped plot to assassinate him by Fayemi and his APC.

Bauchi State government, at the weekend, closed the Sa’adu Zungur Model Primary and Secondary School in Bauchi, the state capital, over illegal marriages among senior students in the school.

The closure order, which also affected the primary section of the school, it was gathered, was given on Friday by the state deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, following a report received by the government on the illegal marriages among the students.
According to a press statement issued by his Special Assistant on Communications, Yakubu Adamu, the deputy governor attributed the illegal marriages among the students to moral decadence in the society.

Gidado stated the school would remain closed until a committee set up by the state government to investigate the matter came up with a detailed report and recommendations.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the illegal act among the students, said to have been rampant among them despite the fact that both male and female students had separate classrooms for learning, blew open last week during one of such illegal marriages.

The near 40-year quest for an AIDS vaccine received a hopeful boost on Saturday when scientists announced that a trial drug triggered an immune response in humans and shielded monkeys from infection.

Shown to be safe in humans, the candidate vaccine has now advanced to the next phase of the pre-approval trial process, and will be tested in 2,600 women in southern Africa to see whether it prevents HIV infection.

While the results so far have been encouraging, the research team and outside experts warn there are no guarantees it will actually work in the next trial phase dubbed HVTN705 or "Imbokodo" — the isiZulu word for "rock".

"Although these data are promising, we need to remain cautious," study leader Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor, told AFP.
"Just because it protected two-thirds of monkeys in a lab trial doesn't mean the drug will protect humans, "and thus we need to await the results of the... study before we know whether or not this vaccine will protect humans against HIV infection," he said.
