Fire gutted a section of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Pogo village, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger on Sunday with fire service officials still trying to put out the fire.

News has it that the Niger Police Command on Sunday had deployed armed personnel to prevent people from scooping petroleum products at the NNPC pipeline that exploded in Dagbo community, Paikoro Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police in Niger, Mr. Dibal Yakadi, said that deployment became necessary in view of the lightning that occurred following a downpour on Saturday night which led to the explosion of NNPC’s pipeline in the area.

Alhaji Ahmed Inga, Director-General Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), told newsmen that the situation is very pathetic.

He advised people living in the neighbouring villages to vacate immediately as state fire service was still battling to out the fire.

According to him, they cannot assure residents of the nearby villages of their safety because of the gravity of the fire.

He also appealed to the villagers who have petrol in their houses to take them away to avoid being trapped by fire.

He lamented that despite the number of firefighting machines the fire is still raging uncontrollably.

He said that the fire service personnel are doing everything humanly possible to bring the situation under control.

He, however, advised villagers around the depot to vacate the entire area for their own safety.

” I can’t guarantee their safety because of the enormity of the raging fire at hand,” he said.

The police commissioner had also directed Paikoro Divisional Police officer to ensure all trucks are evacuated far away from the depot to Minna metropolis.

” We have directed truck owners to immediately remove their trucks to Minna town for their good as well neighbouring villages around the NNPC to a more secure area,” he said.

The Director, Health and Safety of the NNPC, Mr. Alexander Egwudale, who confirmed the incidents, however, decline comments.

Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system within 10,000 light-years, is accelerating particles to high energies, some of which may reach Earth as cosmic rays, a study using data from a NASA telescope has found.

"We know the blast waves of exploded stars can accelerate cosmic ray particles to speeds comparable to that of light, an incredible energy boost," said Kenji Hamaguchi, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in the US.

"Similar processes must occur in other extreme environments. Our analysis indicates Eta Carinae is one of them," said Hamaguchi, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Astronomers know that cosmic rays with energies greater than one billion electron volts (eV) come to us from beyond our solar system. However, because these particles: electrons, protons, and atomic nuclei, all carry an electrical charge, they veer off course whenever they encounter magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and masks their origins.

Eta Carinae, located about 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina, is famous for a 19th century outburst that briefly made it the second-brightest star in the sky.

A Jos High Court on Thursday ordered the remand of 39-year-old Peter John, accused of raping his neighbour’s 9-year-old daughter.
Though the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of rape and criminal intimidation, the judge, Justice Nafisa Musa, ordered that he should be remanded at Jos Prison.

He adjourned the case until March 20 for hearing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr N.K. Tali had told the court that the defendant committed the crime on July 26, 2017, at Furaka village, Jos North Local Government Area.

“The accused, in a confessional statement, told the Police that he lured the girl to a stream and raped her.

“He also told investigators that the little girl was a neighbour’s daughter who helped her mother in selling ‘akara.’

“John told the Police that the girl was sitting with her grandmother at their business spot when he gave her money to buy him a razor blade.

The Volvo XC40 is the newest compact luxury SUV to get launched in India, at an introductory price of Rs 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Interestingly, Volvo India has chosen to only launch the fully-loaded, R-Design trim of the XC40 in India for now.

The XC40 marks Volvo's entry into the compact luxury SUV segment, where it will take on German SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. While the XC40 is available with a range of engine options internationally, for now, Volvo has launched the XC40 only with its 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine dubbed the D4. The engine offers 190 PS and 400 Nm in this guise and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The XC40 follows Volvo's current design language and gets the now popular 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lamps. It is based on the manufacturer's Compact Modular Architecture platform and boasts an unladen ground clearance of 211mm, and as far as dimensions go, the XC40 is marginally larger than its aforementioned German rivals. Taking cognizance of the Indian government's concerns over the misuse of its platform for repeated circulation of provocative content, Facebook-owned WhatsApp on 4 July wrote to the IT Ministry saying the company is horrified by terrible acts of violence.

Reacting to the growing instances of the lynching of innocent people owing to a large number of irresponsible messages filled with rumours and provocation circulated on WhatsApp, the IT Ministry on 3 July asked WhatsApp to take immediate action and ensure that the platform is not used for such malafide activities.

"Thank you for your letter dated 2 July. Like the Government of India, we're horrified by these terrible acts of violence and wanted to respond quickly to the very important issues you have raised. We believe this is a challenge that requires government, civil society and technology companies to work together," WhatsApp said in the letter sent to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has described Alhaji Balarabe Musa, a former Governor of old Kaduna State, as a man that is exemplary in his life and politics.

He stated this while speaking at the launch of a book titled: “Balarabe Musa, the Voice of the Masses’’ on Tuesday in Abuja.

“I personally will say I know not of any honest, sincere and incorruptible man as Alhaji Balarabe Musa, when we are talking of integrity and honesty, you cannot equate any Nigerian with him,’’ Oshiomhole said.

He noted that even as governor, Musa refused to negotiate when he was to be impeached as most present governors would do to secure their office.

He further noted that the ex-governor was not impeached for stealing, corruption or abuse of office, but because he refused to bend and open the state’s treasury for people to help themselves.

The APC national chairman added that Musa was impeached because he refused to pursue policies that in his judgment would be inimical to the welfare and well-being of the people of Kaduna state.

“For that, the forces that wanted things to remain the way they were predetermined to check him out.

“I am aware that there were all manners of forces to make him negotiate, but for him, you don’t negotiate your conviction.

“When you now compare that tradition to where we are today, where people decamp in the morning and before they get their registration card in the evening, because they did wrong calculations, they decamp back and they keep decamping.

“When they contest for an office and don’t win, they will go to another party and keep going like that,’’ Oshiomhole said, adding that this showed lack of commitment, value or political ideology.

He noted that to most politicians in the country, it was all about holding power, even if it meant holding power as an end in itself.

The APC national chairman and former governor of Edo stressed that to Musa, it was not about quantity, but “quality, principles, ideas and rugged commitment’’ to his ideology and belief.

“He is one person I found that even if he has to stand alone for what he believes in and every other person is going the other way because it is not convenient, he would rather stand alone.
“What I take from that is that you should do what you believe in even when you are alone,’’ he said...

Once thought to be one of the most contagious design features on a smartphone, the spread of the "Notch" appears to have been contained.

GSMArena's survey of 150 phone models released in 2018 finds that only 22 per cent have been infected with the Notch.
At the height of the outbreak, in the first week of March, over 20 new Android models checked in with "cut-out" syndrome. Here's a list.

Flagship models from Huawei, LG and OnePlus in 2018 have featured a cut-out. So too will Google, according to leaks. HTC and Sony have remained Notch-free.

The first outbreak was reported last summer, using Andy Rubin's first Essential phone as a host. It then jumped species to Apple.

By December, scientists reported an antidote – an under-glass fingerprint sensor which makes a display cut-out superfluous. But so far we've yet to report a successful field trial.

The Higher Sharia Court, Rigasa, in Kaduna State, has asked a housewife who was married to two husbands to pay N300,000 to one of the aggrieved husbands who sought for divorce.

Ahmed Dogara, a yam seller, residing in Lagos told the Sharia Court he met his wife in Lagos and she did not tell him she had a husband somewhere.

‘When Hadiza (his wife) came to Lagos we started a relationship and eventually agreed to get married. I paid N50, 000 as dowry to consummate our marriage.

He told the Sharia Court that immediately after paying her dowry, one of her close relations told him, she had another husband in Kaduna.
‘I was shocked. When she asked me to allow her travel to Kaduna, I became suspicious but then I decided to allow her to go but unknown to her I was following her. On getting to Kaduna, the address she gave was a fake one. It took me time to locate her and discover the truth.”
Ahmed thus prayed the Sharia Court to dissolve their marriage and make her do a refund of the money he had spent on her so far.

Some of the paraded suspects had blood stains on their dresses while one of them was wearing military trousers.

At least 100 people in Plateau State were gruesomely killed in attacks allegedly carried out by herdsmen on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Muslim Fulani herdsmen were reported to have killed dozens of people in several communities in Plateau on Saturday, leading to subsequent retaliation by locals who reportedly targeted Muslims in some communities.

According to a report by The Nation, OPSH's media officer, Major Adam Umar, paraded the suspects to the media in Jos on Monday, July 2, 2018.

The special task force, which apprehended the suspects, is a combination of the police, Air Force, Army and paramilitary security agencies.

Major Umar disclosed that some of the suspects were arrested in connection to the killings in Barkin Ladi and environs while others were arrested for civil disturbances that took place after the attacks.
He said, "In our efforts to fish out the criminals carrying out attacks in some villages in the state, particularly in Barkin Ladi, we have been able to arrest some people from the scene of attacks.

"The suspects we are parading were arrested with arms, some of them with locally made guns, revolver and other dangerous weapons which they are not supposed to have as citizens.

"Information we extracted from the original suspects led us to trace some other accomplices and we have also arrested them. And there is the possibility of making more arrests over those killings as we intensify our efforts to get to the root of these killings in pursuant of our mandate to stop the killings, prevent further killings and restore total peace in the state.

"In our commitment and desire not to give the attackers opportunity to operate or opportunity to escape after attack, the commander of OPSH has relocated to Barkin Ladi based on his resolve to remain with the villagers and monitor things closely and to be able to respond faster to distress calls from residents in danger."

The Nation reported that some of the paraded suspects, whose identities were not disclosed, had blood stains on their dresses while one of them was wearing military trousers.

Major Umar urged members of the public to help authorities track down more suspects by providing credible and useful information.

When Donald Trump proposed arming teachers to deter school shooters, the overwhelming response from educators was horror. Yet teachers in Colorado are taking action to carry concealed guns to school.
The non-profit group FASTER, set up after 20 small children were killed in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, has trained more than 1,300 US school staff, mostly in Ohio, on how to use a handgun in the event of a school shooting.
Sixty-three of them have been trained in Colorado, home to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. The swing state has a Democratic governor and both a Democrat and a Republican in the US Senate.
"I think it's scary to people to bring a weapon into school," conceded Katie, a first-grade teacher in Jefferson County, west of state capital Denver, who declined to give her second name.
"They just see the bad side, not the positive side of how guns can save people," the 27-year-old told AFP.
She was a student this week at the three-day, $1,000 course in Commerce City outside Denver.
The United States is the only developed country in the world that suffers relentless school shootings with roughly one a week, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group working to restrict firearms.
America's gun violence epidemic kills around 33,000 people each year. More than 214,000 students have experienced a school shooting in the United States since 1999, according to a Washington Post database.

Tech-giant Google today (June 29) commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the ‘plan-man’ of India by dedicating a doodle in his honour. He was born on 29 June 1893 in West Bengal.
PC Mahalanobis is known as the Father of Statistical Science in India. He is also considered as the chief architect of Indian statistical system, as it was he who established the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931 in erstwhile Calcutta.
The day is also observed as the "Statistics Day" in India. PC Mahalanobis also help establish statistical institutes across the country like the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), the National Sample Survey (NSS) and the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI).

Mahalanobis is also known for his contributions in developing statistical tools to get an estimate of population distribution in the country, crop yields and household consumption post independence. His estimation techniques combined statistics with other disciplines like anthropology, physics and economics.

He is also remembered for what is known as "Mahalanobis Distance", a concept in statistics which is used in the analysis of anthropometric data. Indian second five year plan’s (1956-1961) emphasis on rapid industrialization too followed his development model. He served as a member of India's Planning Commission from 1953 until 1967.

He died on June 28, 1972.

One of the controversial Governors in Nigeria, Nyesom Wike has stated that he will not trade his integrity for piecemeal political favours.

He said political office holders owe it a duty to impact on the lives of their people and must be held responsible when they fail to uphold their oath of office.
Wike while assuring Ogu-Bolo people, promised to roll out more projects for communities who do not trouble contractors handling projects in their area.
According to him, “I have always said that if our people hold those they have elected accountable, we will not be hearing excuses.
