Someone pointed out that home training is keeping Nigerian women from participating but someone else said it’s feat of being judged.

Politics / Okorocha Berates Ohanaeze Over Adoption Of Atiku by Chidusky(m): 5:43pm On Jan 26, 2019
The governor stated that it was not the first time the Igbo pressure group had adopted a PDP presidential candidate, recalling that it did so in 2015 yet failed with its presidential candidate, with the APC winning the election.

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha

Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha has taken a swipe at the leadership of Igbo sociocultural organization Ohanaeze Ndigbo over its recent endorsement of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of next month’s presidential election.

Governor Okorocha, who expressed his displeasure in a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, remarked that Ohanaeze is not a registered political party and does not have a voting unit or polling booth to deliver to Atiku.

“Its adoption of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be seen as a folklore and should not give anybody concern. The adoption is neither here nor there, since it has no electoral value,” the statement read.

The governor stated that it was not the first time the Igbo pressure group had adopted a PDP presidential candidate, recalling that it did so in 2015 yet failed with its presidential candidate, with the APC winning the election.

“One would have expected Ohanaeze to exercise caution this time following what happened in 2015. Indeed, the organization should have done things differently, especially when it remembers that all Igbos, whether in PDP, APC, APGA, ADC or SDP, are presumed to be members of Ohanaeze,” he stated.

The governor concluded that, “not minding the adoption, President Muhammadu Buhari will win in the South-East and the general election proper. So, Igbos in APC should remain focused and not make the adoption an issue…”

Education / ASUU Continues Strike As FG Releases N163bn TETFUND by Chidusky(m): 10:23pm On Jan 22, 2019
The Federal Government said it has released N163 billion to the universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund but striking academics are stalling in calling off their strike.

Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, said this while addressing newsmen after a closed-door reconciliatory meeting with leaders of Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the striking lecturers embarked on a strike on November 5, 2018, to press home their demands.

ASUU demands included some areas of understanding in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action agreed in 2017.

Some of these areas include shortfall in salaries of some Federal Universities’ workers and lecturers, earned allowances, revitalisation projects that were part of the 2009 agreement, among others.

According to Ngige, “today, we (FG) have agreed to fund revitalisation.

“Government has released about N163 billion from TETFund account to universities.

“So, we have gotten some substantial agreement in most of the areas of the agreement.

“Most of the issues have been resolved, so they are going to go back to their members and present government’s offer to their council,‘’ he said.

Ngige also said that the striking lecturers were not asking for N50 billion before they would call off the strike.

He, however, added that if the total amount of the union’s demand was aggregated it would be more than the N50 billion as the government was paying in different compartments.

“These are debts of 2009, owed by the past administration, that is 2009 to 2012, so it is not our own debt and we have been doing a lot to settle these debts.

“So, we will be reconvening at the instance of ASUU. They said they want to go and consult with their members and they cannot call off the strike without consulting with their members,’’ he said.

Earlier, the minister had said that President Muhammadu Buhari had mandated him to ensure that all issues concerning the ongoing strike in the university system were resolved.

“The president has directed me to pass the night here until all issues that have kept our children away from schools are resolved and strike called off.

“He has also directed me to impress upon you, the imperative of little sacrifice from all sides, knowing fully well that the revenue of the federation has dwindled from what it was before the present administration assumed office,” he said.

Ngige further said President Buhari was greatly worried about the situation in the university system, hence his steady and holistic approach to tackling the rot through adequate funding.

“Mr president told me to assure you of his determination to reposition our universities as he would do everything possible to cast the present challenges in our tertiary education into the dustbin of history.

Also, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, said that there were still some grey areas in the proposal presented by the Federal Government.

He said the union would look at the grey areas and would get back to the government.

“The most critical area is the revitalisation, because it is central to our work, as academics and unless that area is addressed our members will have issues with ongoing action.

“We also did not ask for N50 billion, we are saying that the minimum, we expect the government to release in order to reactive the revitalisation fund is N50 billion.

“So, the strike is still on,’’ he said.

Education / ASUU Strike: ASUU, Fg Resume Meeting Today by Chidusky(m): 11:51am On Jan 21, 2019
Report has it that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government will be meeting on Monday, January 21, to resume talks on how to resolve the over the two-month-old industrial action. This was disclosed by the national president of the union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi to newsmen

According to him, “I’ am afraid nothing new. I understand they will be meeting us on Monday. Let’s wait and see if they take a reasonable step; it will determine our next line of action. Until then, let’s wait and see.”

However, a source in the ministry of Labour and productivity, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that ASUU should be blamed for the delay in reopening the universities.

The source added that the FG had showed commitment to the ASUU’s demands and that it was better to start from what the FG had offered than to halt negotiation.

According to the source, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had told the leadership of ASUU that the FG would accept many of their demands but flexibility is needed to implement the rest. They left the meeting happy and said they would discuss the progress with their other organs. But they had delayed in moving forward. The blame is no longer on the FG. ASUU should come forward with what they think of the FG’s commitment so far.

The union, had earlier asked the government to provide concrete evidence of the payment of at least N50billion revitalisation fund to end the strike.

Though, other demands of the union, are still pending, the union said the proof of the payment could set the tone for the suspension of the strike.

Education / We Are Still Expecting Fg's Invitation To Call Of Strike - ASUP by Chidusky(m): 9:23am On Jan 21, 2019
The National Vice President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr Timothy Ogunseye has revealed that the union after reviewing reports from various chapters at its emergency NEC meeting held last week Thursday, agreed that the ongoing strike should continue until the government can show some form of commitment.

He recalled that the last meeting with the Federal Government on January10th could not hold due to the fact that the key stake holders from the Government were not available for the meeting and as such, ASUP couldn’t continue with the meeting and it was put off. He added that till now ASUP is still expecting another invitation from the FG.

The ASUP President equally disclosed that the Federal Government promised to give the union N15bn revitalisation funds as a show of commitment which the union did not object to. But up until now, the promise has not been fulfilled.

Ogunseye said the salient issues, which forced the lecturers to declare an indefinite strike, were not just about money for the lecturers but how to make the government address the dilapidated structures and lack of instructional materials to teach students.

Education / UTME: JAMB Registers Over 300,000 In One Week by Chidusky(m): 2:43pm On Jan 18, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week. The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to  Newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise.

“We are happy with the way the process is going; we hope it will continue this way.

“So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as of Thursday.

“We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said.

Meanwhile, JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified.

“I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues.

“Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her fingerprints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja.

“This will require the Chief Executive to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said.

This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues.

The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria had argued that asking candidates with biometric issues to travel all the way to Abuja to get such issues sorted out was too demanding, citing dangers of transportation, fares, among others.

Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the second Deputy National President of the Association, said that most parents were barely struggling to get money to get their children and wards registered.

Ogunbanjo said that for those with such biometric issues, travelling to Abuja was an additional burden.

Education / UTME Forms Can Now Be Upgraded To Direct Entry - JAMB by Chidusky(m): 2:43pm On Jan 16, 2019
The  Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has disclosed that candidates can now "upgrade" their UTME forms to that of Direct Entry instead of purchasing the two forms if they equally have the qualifications for Direct Entry Admission into any of the universities. This was part of the information contained in the 2019 JAMB UTME/DE Registration guidelines.

Explaining this further, the JAMB's Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin said that candidates that applied through UTME and later obtained DE (Direct Entry) qualification or wish to use their Direct Entry qualifications for admission can upgrade their UTME to DE at no cost.

”Once the candidate registers for UTME and discovers he has direct entry qualification, he or she is free to just upgrade to direct entry,” said Mr Benjamin.

This means that if you have qualification for Direct Entry Admission and wish to use it to apply for admission after you may have purchased the UTME Form, all you need to do is just to visit any of the JAMB accredited centre or JAMB offices and upgrade the UTME to Direct Entry instead of purchasing a separate Direct Entry form.

Education / ASUU Strike: Lecturers Reject Offers, Make Fresh Demands From FG by Chidusky(m): 11:33am On Jan 12, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made fresh demands from the Federal Government, dashing the hopes of many students that academic activities will resume soon.

When ASUU’s leadership met with Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment on Tuesday, he said the labour dispute with the university teachers was on the verge of being resolved.

According to Ngige, the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance presented evidence that N15.4billion had been released to public universities.

On earned academic allowances, he said President Muhammadu Buhari approved N20billion to offset arrears of the 2009 to 2012 verified earnings by university teachers.

However, speaking with Premium Times on Saturday, ASUU president Biodun Ogunyemi, said upon reviewing the offers made by the government, members of the union across various campuses and zones rejected it.

“Our members have rejected tokenism with respect to outstanding revitalization fund of N1.1 trillion. They are insisting that government should release at least one tranche of N220 billion spread over four quarters of 2019.

“On earned academic allowances, our members said government’s proposed amount out of the verified balance should not be less than the total amount released last time, while evidence of mainstreaming the allowances into the 2019 budget should be shown. Also, timeline should be attached to payment of the balance of the arrears.“The revitalization fund and earned academic allowances are the two critical areas on which our members feel strongly about. They expect necessary adjustments on the part of government before they can reconsider their decision on the ongoing strike action,” Ogunyemi said.
