The local government election conducted by former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola took place on October 15, 2022, about a month before he left office on November 27, 2022. The election was organized by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) under Oyetola's administration.

1. Election Format:

The election was conducted using a parliamentary system, meaning chairmen were elected by councilors rather than through a direct vote.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) was the only party that participated in the election, as other parties boycotted it.



2. Legal Controversy & Opposition:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties challenged the election's legality, arguing it did not follow due process.

The Osun PDP labeled the election a "sham" and took the case to court.



3. Court Ruling & Annulment:

On November 25, 2022, Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court in Osogbo declared the election null and void, ruling that it was conducted in violation of the Electoral Act 2022.

The court ordered all APC-elected local government officials to vacate office immediately.

This ruling came just two days before Oyetola handed over to Governor Ademola Adeleke (PDP).



4. Aftermath:

Governor Adeleke complied with the court order and sacked the newly elected APC local government officials.

The PDP government accused Oyetola of trying to impose APC loyalists at the local government level before leaving office.




This election remains a controversial issue in Osun State politics, as it was seen as an attempt by Oyetola to retain political influence despite losing the July 16, 2022 governorship election to Ademola Adeleke.
