*CATFISH AS A HOST* *The quality and the condition of the fish you stock in your ponds or tanks, are two underestimated factors in prevention of diseases. Strongly healthy fish can put up with a lot! When you buy fish from hatcheries to stock them in your grow-out ponds, you will find out that fish from different hatcheries will yield different results.* *First of all, the growth is different, which means that also the health of the fish varies too. Are the fish well fed and given the best feed at the hatchery?* *Has the brood stock been selected well and also given the best feed? The genetics of the fish also play a part. Well domesticated lines of catfish will adapt better in a captive environment and will not feel so stressed as wild undomesticated catfish.* *The fry stage is crucial(decisive) when it comes to development of the intestinal system and bone formation. When development problems arise, they will not fade away, but remain till the fish are harvested at table size. It's like building a house on a good or bad foundation. Some hatcheries are using antibiotics preventively during the entire growth cycle.* *This will definitely weaken the immune system of the fish.* Mr Nelson Ubi |
Recirculation of the water however, comes at a price. The system can only operate with 24/7 power supply, because pumps are running 24/7 in order to push the water through the purification system back to the fish ponds. It is a high-tech system and it can be operated by farmers who have the engineering skill and practical experience to work with a system like this. In the early 2000s(2000-2005),many farmers wanted to grow fish in a recirculation system. Their reasons were: 1. Farming in a recirculation system can be done very intensely and doesn’t need much space. So farming can be done even in town or in an industrial area. Most investors and farmers don’t live on their farm, but want to live close to the farm for routine checks, control etcetera. 2. Farming in a recirculation system close to town or in town, offers the opportunity to have customers close by. 3. Since it’s very intensive system, you can secure it and control theft much better than with an extensive pond farm system, which was used mostly at that time. 4. Because the majority of the water is recycled, the farm can run with one or two good boreholes, making the farm independent of other sources, such as a river or a dam. _ *Prof Wealth Nelson Ubi* |
*RECIRCULATION SYSTEMS* In a recirculation system, the water is not used only once, but is also recycled via a water purification process and flows back into the pond. Recirculation is not 100% but can be as high as 95% depending on the quality of the water purification system and the management applied. The recycling process means that the water consumption per kg of production is drastically reduced. Instead of 1.4m³ per kg of feed, 0.2m³ per kg of feed is required. _ *Prof Wealth Nelson Ubi* |
If you have not been added kindly indicate. Meanwhile in fulfilment to what I promise. I will be showing pictures. We have developed a group where ponds are given to intending fish fermers and they pay gradually |

Wooden tanks are good too for begginers especially smokable size farmers... This small scale medium will help you to be familiar with the nature of the fishery business, before you’ll extend your market reach. Fish pond sizes are also different. Fish ponds are of various sizes and their cost is vary, depending on your environment and need. What should you do? Move out. Visit fish farms around you. Visit fish feeds seller. Visit some experienced bricklayers. Ask questions. Ask questions. Ask questions. The reason why I advise you to go out this way is because, these people will give you the best advice that can be useful to you in that environment, since they are in your vicinity. |
3. Choose The Right Fish Pond or Plastic Tank for Housing Your Fish. I compared water with oxygen in it. Here I’m talking about housing your fish. Just like you, your fish needs a comfortable place to live. The more natural and comfortable the fish pond is, the better for them. There are two popular fish housing system… backyard plastic tank or pond. Plastic tank may be good for you if you’re just starting fish |
Let’s get into details; 1. Get a Good Location for Your Fish farming Business. You need to first decide whether you’re starting your fish business on a small scale or you’re going big. If you’re starting a small scale fish farm, you may decide to start at your backyard with tank but if you’re going big, you may need to buy or rent one or few fish ponds (earthen or concrete ponds) outside your home. 2. Get a Good Source of Water for Your Fish How important is water to a fish? Just as oxygen is important to you. Take a fish out of water and it becomes helpless and dying. Put it in a bad water and you`re affecting its growth and productivity (though “bad” water varies, depending on the kind of fish we are talking about. Some fish live in rough water while others cannot). |
Whether you’re planning to start a small scale fish farming or a gigantic commercial fish farming in Nigeria, follow these 9 steps to get started; 1. Get a good location for your farm 2. Get a good source of water 3. Choose the appropriate fish pond 4. Decide the right species of fish for you 5. Get healthy fingerling or juveniles 6. Understand fish feeds & feeding 7. Start Marketing your fish before they grow-up 8. Be business minded 9. Get good and practical fish farming training |
