*RECIRCULATION SYSTEMS* In a recirculation system, the water is not used only once, but is also recycled via a water purification process and flows back into the pond. Recirculation is not 100% but can be as high as 95% depending on the quality of the water purification system and the management applied. The recycling process means that the water consumption per kg of production is drastically reduced. Instead of 1.4m³ per kg of feed, 0.2m³ per kg of feed is required. _ *Prof Wealth Nelson Ubi* |

Recirculation of the water however, comes at a price. The system can only operate with 24/7 power supply, because pumps are running 24/7 in order to push the water through the purification system back to the fish ponds. It is a high-tech system and it can be operated by farmers who have the engineering skill and practical experience to work with a system like this. In the early 2000s(2000-2005),many farmers wanted to grow fish in a recirculation system. Their reasons were: 1. Farming in a recirculation system can be done very intensely and doesn’t need much space. So farming can be done even in town or in an industrial area. Most investors and farmers don’t live on their farm, but want to live close to the farm for routine checks, control etcetera. 2. Farming in a recirculation system close to town or in town, offers the opportunity to have customers close by. 3. Since it’s very intensive system, you can secure it and control theft much better than with an extensive pond farm system, which was used mostly at that time. 4. Because the majority of the water is recycled, the farm can run with one or two good boreholes, making the farm independent of other sources, such as a river or a dam. _ *Prof Wealth Nelson Ubi* |

*CATFISH AS A HOST* *The quality and the condition of the fish you stock in your ponds or tanks, are two underestimated factors in prevention of diseases. Strongly healthy fish can put up with a lot! When you buy fish from hatcheries to stock them in your grow-out ponds, you will find out that fish from different hatcheries will yield different results.* *First of all, the growth is different, which means that also the health of the fish varies too. Are the fish well fed and given the best feed at the hatchery?* *Has the brood stock been selected well and also given the best feed? The genetics of the fish also play a part. Well domesticated lines of catfish will adapt better in a captive environment and will not feel so stressed as wild undomesticated catfish.* *The fry stage is crucial(decisive) when it comes to development of the intestinal system and bone formation. When development problems arise, they will not fade away, but remain till the fish are harvested at table size. It's like building a house on a good or bad foundation. Some hatcheries are using antibiotics preventively during the entire growth cycle.* *This will definitely weaken the immune system of the fish.* Mr Nelson Ubi |

https://www.nairaland.com/5894415/propose-catfish-farmers-association#90193368 Its interesting how we all want to explore catfish farming as a business. But how much does the business offers in returns.... Who benefits most in this business..... The fact remains catfish business is not regulated and until it does, only very few will last in the business. |
