Two ways to look at this:

1. Its either they are lying. They must have fired before asking questions and later discovered he is one of them.

OR

2. Mr. Clement is using his service pistol to rob people on that infamous area and on sighting his colleagues fled so that he wont be identified.

The money, I assume, then go into the treasury and from the treasury- sighs-  well to the pockets of humans. Either to charity or Charlatans, either way the monies go to humans and not God.
