That was the place Ajayi Crowther, Sanders brothers, Mongo Park etc first visited on arriving in this part of the world. Crowther was at the time resident in Onitsha when he was propagating the word of GOD through CMS. Onitsha people were the first to see the Europeans in this part of country that is why even up till today they still the most educated part of Igboland, producing high profile lawyers, scientists, doctors etc

Eze Nri is understandably the custodian of Igbo culture but all those other kings you mentioned are inconsequential village heads and elders.

Igwe Orizu of Nnewi is equally very powerful.

Obi Ossai of Aboh(Ukwuani, Delta state), Obi of Agbor(Ika, Delta state), Obi Aroli of Onitsha(Anambra state) and Eze Nri( Anambra state). These are the ones I know with records that the Europeans met in the 19th century. Among all of them the one that struck the British was the Eze Nri. He was not to be seen any how. He said that because of the sacredness surrounding the Eze. The wealth of tradition at Nri was unparalleled all over Igboland and had no similarity else where. Every other Igbo gets the respect that I'll give to any respectable person(those claiming any specialty because they are from Nri should take note). Without doubt, Agbogidi is the most Influential politically and a very powerful(note not the most powerful) is not in doubt. I salute him: Igwe I ga adi o. Igwe Orizu of Nnewi though influential and wealthy does not measure up to Achebe. I know that the Nnewi people will try to prop him up because Nnewi itself is becoming very big and developed but there are ingredients that Onitsha already have the Nnewi will sweat to get. Notice that no one remembers the Obi of Aboh any more. Aboh still exists in Delta state. It was that Obi who sold the Lander brothers to the Atta of Igala. He was very influential but today his throne is in ruins.
Now coming to all Igboland, I heard that the Abiriba people had Eze when the Europeans came but I've not been able to get any written confirmation. Arochukwu too I heard had a king but no confirmation although they had military leaders that led them against the British soldiers named Toti but what tradition was he known for? What are the rituals that he performs as is consistent with African kings of his time? Then, Jaja of Opobo is there too but I won't include him in this discussion. Note my writing is based on history of the existence of their throne and the influence it had both then and now. Majority of the Obis, Ezes and the recent Igwes are manufactured in the twentieth century(colonial Nigeria) and some even post colonial Nigeria. How can we call such people custodian of Igbo culture and tradition. Let's be objective please.
