AgricultureSorghum Production: This Is Going To Change Your Business Strategies. by chisam22(op): 11:35pm On Oct 12, 2018
Sorghum production is highly recognized as the fifth most important cereal production in the world following wheat, maize, rice and barely.

So because of its drought resistivity, the production areas are mostly the drier regions.

However, in recent years, maize tends to replace sorghum probably due to its value.

Sorghum is used as a sample food, for brewing beverages, as a livestock feed (fodder, forage or silage), for manufacturing industrial goods, as fuel and many other forms.

SITE SELECTION FOR SORGHUM PRODUCTION
Sorghum is adapted to a wide range of ecological conditions and possesses better heat resistance than any other cereal.

Select a fertile and well drained soil. Although, it can tolerate water logging soil condition better than millet and maize.

Make sure to avoid planting sorghum after sorghum, rather form the habit of rotating sorghum with legumes or cotton where applicable.

Select a site with little or no striga.

FIELD MANAGEMENT FOR SORGHUM PRODUCTION
Field measurement is very important because, accurate field measurement will guide the farmers to know the actual area of his farm.

The use of Geographical positioning System (GPS) has simplified the rigour of land measurement.

For area calculation, select AREA, from the main menus of GPS receiver.
Enter START, then walk around the perimeter of the farmland you want to measure.

Select CALCULATE to see the area inside the path walked through. The AREA’s unit can be converted to any unit in the GPS receiver.

LAND PREPARATION FOR SORGHUM
Sowing is done on flat land or on ridges.

In most parts of Nigeria especially, sorghum is sown on ridges and old ridges are destroyed and new ones are made in the old furrow.
Proper soil tillage is (sometimes) necessary to obtain good yields.
Good land preparation ensures that the site selected is clear edit any debris or stumbles from previous crops before the onset of rains.
Gather and burn all the debris- to avoid carryover of pests and disease from previous season.
Till the soil into smaller crumbs and in the process turn silver to cover the weeds.
Tillage may involve ploughing, harrowing and ridging.
Ploughing may be necessary after 3-5 years of continuous harrowing while harrowing and ridging are done yearly.
Ploughing is deep cultivation while harrowing pulverizes the soil and ridging helps to create a good bed for root establishment, prevent lodging, improve drainage in water logged areas and concentrate nutrients from top soil near the crop for easy access.

VARIETIES AND SEED SELECTION FOR SORGHUM
Some of the good varieties sorghum seeds are:-

1. SAMSORG-14 (KSV-cool.

2. SAMSORG-17 (SK5912).

3. SAMSORG H1-4 (Hybrids).

4. SAMSORG- 40 (ICSV-400).

5. SAMSORG-41 (ICSV-III).

6. CSR 01 (Farafara Ex Kano).

7. CSR 02 (Farafara Ex Katsina), and

8. BES.

FoodLearning Wheat Production Is Not Difficult At All! You Just Need A Great Teacher by chisam22(op): 11:53pm On Oct 09, 2018
Wheat production is the most important crop production of the world, which is being harvested somewhere in every month of the year. More hectares of land worldwide are devoted to wheat than any other crop and the world’s total production exceeds that of any other grain.

It is the preferred grain for food in advanced countries. Unlike many other cereal crops, wheat is mainly a food rather than a feed crop.

After processing, the crop product is consumed directly by man, usually as a flour product (bread, pastries, cakes, crackers, macaroni and spaghetti). Wheat is also used in the manufacture of dextrose and alcohol.

In producing wheat flour, the by- products which are higher in protein content serve as a valuable protein supplement in livestock feeds.
The straw provides a valuable fodder. It is used for making baskets and hats, thatching and as packing material.

Wheat production has gained prominence in the import economy of Nigeria which has necessitated various governments to invest on its local production.

SITE SELECTION

Wheat is adaptable to wide range of growing conditions, but is best suited to cool climates with moderate rainfall.
Cool weather is especially important during the tillering and early growth stages.

Wheat can be grown on a wide range of soils, but does best on well-drained, fertile soils of medium to heavy texture.
However, very heavy or very sandy soils should be avoided.

Wheat prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils.
The site for wheat production must be an area with permanent source of water irrigation.

FIELD MANAGEMENT

Field measurement is very important because its accuracy guides farmers to know their farm sizes for vital decision on farm operations including the right amount of inputs needed and the anticipated yields from the farms.
The use of (Geographical positioning System, GPS) hands receiver has simplified the rigor of land measurement. Land area can be easily measured using GPS receiver while transecting the perimeter of the land.

VARIETIES

It is advisable for Wheat Farmers to source for improved seed variety from their ADPs, NASC or research Institute near your location. This is because good quality seeds are difficult to get from open markets.

Nevertheless, there are a number of wheat varieties in Nigeria which you should bear in mind such as:-

1. SAMWHIT-5 (Siette-Cerrors)
2. SAMWHIT-6 (Pavon F.76)
3. SAMWHIT-7 (Bulbul)....

FoodMost Effective Ways To Overcome Food Safety’s Problem by chisam22(op): 12:29am On Oct 06, 2018
Food Safety can be achieved in the following ways:-

cool cool

HAND WASHING CLEANING MAINTENANCE
Bacteria can be spread throughout the kitchen and get onto hands, cutting boards, utensils, counter tops and foods.
To ensure that your hands and surfaces are cleaned, make sure you:-

a. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20-30 seconds before and after handling food and after using the bathroom, changing diapers and handling pets.

b. Wash your cutting boards dishes, utensils and counter tops with hot soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next food.

c. Consider using paper towels to clean up kitchen surfaces. If you use cloth towels wash them often in hot cycle of your washing machine or with very hot water.

d. Rinse fresh fruits and vegetable under running tap water, including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten.
e. Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush while rinsing.

f. Clean lids of canned goods before opening it.
g. Use only sound and clean raw material and do use safe and clean water to prepare foods.

h. Prevent foods from being contaminated by pathogens coming from humans, pets or pests.

i. Package foods using appropriate containers and store them at the proper temperature.

j. Separate raw and cooked food to prevent contaminating the cooked foods.

2. Separate raw meat/fish/poultry from other foods.
Cross-contamination can occur when bacteria are spread from one food product to another.

This is especially common when handling raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs. The key is to keep these foods and their juices away from ready to eat foods.
To prevent cross- contamination, remember to:-

 Separate raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs from other foods in your grocery shopping cart, grocery bags, and in your refrigerator.

 Use one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry and seafood.

 Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs.

 Don’t reuse marinades used on raw foods unless you boil them first.

3. Cook at the temperature and time
Food is well cooked when it reaches a high enough internal temperature to kill the harmful organisms that cause harm to the body. To ensure that your foods are cooked well at all times:-

 Use a food thermometer to measure the internal temperature of cooked foods. Check the internal temperature in many places to make sure the meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, or dishes containing eggs are cooked to safe minimum internal temperatures.

 Cook ground meat or poultry until it reaches a safe internal temperature. Colour is not a reliable indicator of a safe cooking.

 Cook eggs until the yolk and white are firm. Only use formulas in which eggs are cooked or heated well.

 When cooking in a micro wave oven, cover, stir, and rotate for even cooking. If there is no turn table, rotate the dish by hand once or twice during cooking.

Always permit standing time, which finishes the cooking, before checking the internal temperature with a sustenance thermometer. Food is done when it achieves the sheltered least inward temperature. Bring sauces, soups and gravy to a boil when reheating.

AgricultureUnderstand The Background Of Food Safety Now. by chisam22(op): 12:31am On Sep 30, 2018
Food safety entails appropriate handling, preparation, use and storage of foods in the manner that prevent both chemical and microbial as well as minimize microbial proliferation. Food safety is a very broad topic and includes safety precautions on pesticides, herbicides chemical addictive, and importantly microbes.

Food scientists, food processors and consumers focus most on microbiological quality because micro organisms are often too small to be seen with the naked eyes and they have the ability to multiply profusely every 15-20 minutes. Many of them produce toxins and/or cause infections; others cause spoilage and some both.

-They pose great challenge to the food industry and thus the designs of most food processing outlets are made with microbial quality in mind. This includes a number of techniques that should be strictly adhered to ward off potentially risk factors from coming into direct contact with food materials and food containers while at the same time lesson the effects of severe health hazards.

-Chemical contamination of foods, on the other hand includes residues of pesticides, herbicides, veterinary drugs, heavy metals and other extraneous matters in foods.

Apart from chemical or microbial contamination, the good itself is a chemical constituent if handled inappropriately may decompose to yield substances with immediate or potent health hazard if consumed. For example, fat and oil breakdown will not only result into rancidity but will yield hydroperoxidases and polymeric compounds that are detrimental to the body.

It is also a well-known fact that food can transmit disease from person to person as well as serve as a growth medium for bacteria that cause food poisoning and/or spoilage.

Thus, food safety starts from the farm through merchandise, and up to the time the food enters the mouth. In this way, there should be assurance of safety and quality of the food along the chain when all precautions aimed at getting rid of contaminants are well served... AgricultureSoil Management Technique For Millet. by chisam22(op): 3:39am On Sep 13, 2018
It is important to return crop residues of the previous year into the soil where millet is to be planted.
It is also important to grow millet in rotation with legume crops to provide natural soil enrichment.

Water Management for Millet

Millet requires relatively less water compared to maize and rice.
It requires an annual rainfall of 500-600mm
Integrated soil fertility management
Recommended fertilizer rate per hectare is 60 kg N, 30 kg P2O5 and 30 kg K2O per hectare is recommended for optimum yield.
The fertilizer may be applied in one dose or split into two when soils are very sandy.
Apply your fertilizer on moist but not wet soil.
Do not apply when you anticipate rain as this may likely leach away your costly fertilizer.
