Nairaland / General / My First Dinner With My Inlaws by ChisomGodsgift1(f): 11:00am On Dec 07, 2019
Food they say is life and cooking is a tool by which we feel this life. Cooking is not only what one does for just doing sake,it requires a great skill to achieve a great result too.
Mike has always been a well focused, goal oriented young man. Having come from this family where wealth is drawn Like its a well filled with water. He is handsome to the extent that ladies can't take their eyes off him.
I met mike during our university days at one of our general class where his eyes caught mine . I never wanted to give in to his proposals afterwards, I discovered this hidden handsomeness in him. I had earlier thought it won't work out according to what people said .But after giving me reasons which I saw was true, we set out our relationship.

After our graduation and NYSC his family proceeded with the normal rites and our white wedding together with the court marriage. During the moment of our courtship, when I came to visit my supposed mother in-law, I noticed so many things in her . of course women of this type of background, highly influential tends to be fearless in the sense that they carry themselves with so much prestige. She is also fair and beautiful, I guess her son took after her.
A family dinner was hosted by my father in-law which he invited most of his old time colleagues and judges,he was a judge. I usually tell my husband how good I am at cooking and how great my foods taste. One time in a discussion with the mum,she asked if I am good at it,I answered her with great affirmation.
My mother in-law being a woman who is a good at talking and making speeches started bragging about how good her daughter in-law is,not only that she is good for her son but a great cook too!
On my side,I believed in my self that yes I can cook and its going to be explicit.
Friends and family had started trooping in to my father in law's compound that late evening. I can feel the joy in every ones face especially Mike. You can actually tell how happy he is that his lovely wife is the main reason for the gathering. My father in-law at a point called me with a gleaming smile, which passed information to my soul, although he left me without a word. I was overjoyed by there looking at the sitting room, where all the big names in human sat waiting to have a taste of my food.

I prepared Ewa soup— a vegetable soup that requires a great skill and expertise. This type of soup has a way of stirring your taste Bud, leaving you wanting for more
The dinner was a kind of merry making gathering, we'd gist, laughed and did varieties of stuffs.
When it was time for refreshment I was sent to get food,my instincts never deceived me. So I knew my soul will make them return back for another treat and probably make my in-laws double my bride price.
I served all of the invitees together with my in-laws and husband. My father in-law was the first to taste the soup ,others followed. The sitting room was calm ,no one talked to the other. No sign to show if it was a kudos or a No No. I was confused, I kept mute, then after some time my father in-law stood up with heaviness of heart,he thanked everyone that came for the dinner party, and with face filled with disappointment he made his words "I think I will reschedule this dinner for another day, I am not pleased with what I just had here and my wife will be the one to serve you all".
This incidence at the family dinner left so many wound untouched. Moments of sadness, anguish and sorrow. It geared the question of "if that was what she is made of". Having that cooking good meals is what every potential mother ought to know and be good at. I was lost in thought, I taught I knew it.
Was ashamed by that public embarrassment, I don't know if I should run away or hide my face. I lost everything. At this point I was left without a word!
