Basic Facts about Bedbugs part 2 Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color. Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime. Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year. Although they are a nuisance, they do not transmit diseases. Bedbugs Slideshow Where Bed Bugs Hide Bedbugs may enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bedbugs do not have nests like ants or bees, but tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night. Over time, however, they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected location. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments. Because bedbugs live solely on blood, having them in your home is not a sign of dirtiness. You are as likely to find them in immaculate homes and hotel rooms as in filthy ones. When Bedbugs Bite Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed. Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do. People who don't realize they have a bedbug infestation may attribute the itching and welts to other causes, such as mosquitoes. To confirm bedbug bites, you must find and identify the bugs themselves. Signs of Infestation If you wake up with itchy areas you didn't have when you went to sleep, you may have bedbugs, particularly if you got a used bed or other used furniture around the time the bites started. Other signs that you have bedbugs include: • Blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases • Dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls • Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide • An offensive, musty odor from the bugs' scent glands • • • For more tips on bedbug-proofing your space, check out Chogon Facilities illustrated bedbug prevention guide. • CHOGON FACILITIES SERVICES LTD • 10 Diya Street Gbagada Lagos • +2348072292381 • info@chogonfacilities.com • www.chogonfacilities.com

Bed Bugs 101: Fumigation demystified At Brick Underground, we love working with sponsors we would recommend to our own friends and family. And we are bed bug geeks. So we are extremely psyched that the guys at Bed Bug Fumigation Specialists are joining our growing family of sponsors. After many hours talking bed bugs with these folks these past few weeks, we can confidently tell you that they not only know what they’re doing (founder Gary Geiger alone has more than 50,000 fumigations under his belt), they also have the kind of vision, integrity and entrepreneurial zeal that is urgently needed to solve the local and national bed bug problem. Visionary case in point: At BrickUnderground’s BedbuggedNYC Meetup on Sept. 15th, CBFS will announce a third-generation of its Fume Cube that we predict could become the next must-have apartment-building amenity, a no-brainer as essential as high-speed Internet access. Today, however, we’re kicking off BBFS’ sponsorship of our bed bug content with a bit of demystification. Forget everything you ever thought you knew about fumigation. Here’s the deal, straight from the folks at BBFS. 1. What exactly is fumigation? Let’s start with what it’s not: It is not poison. Fumigation occurs when an inorganic gas called sulfuryl fluoride (originally marketed under the name by Dow AgroSciences) is pumped into an enclosed, sealed space stuffed with your household items. In a controlled environment, the gas replaces the oxygen, causing bed bugs and their eggs to suffocate and die. Used by qualified professionals,Vikane® gas fumigant can eliminate bed bugs--from just a few pieces of furniture, bedding or other household goods, to an entire home or building with its contents in place. Depending on size of the structure, container or vehicle being fumigated, the treatment times can range from several hours (generally from 18 - 48 hours total treatment time). Once released, the Vikane quickly breaks down to its two naturally-occurring ingredients and floats harmlessly away. 2. Why fumigate? • Vikane® gas fumigant is scientifically proven to be 100% effective against all stages of bed bug life, including the hard-to-control egg stage, in a single application. • There is no resistance of bed bugs to Vikane®, unlike the resistance they now have to many commonly applied pesticides. • Vikane® gas fumigant penetrates into cracks and crevices, into furniture and any other hiding places — yes, even into sensitive electronics — to eliminate the pests. • Vikane completely dissipates to leave no surface residue, odor or film behind. • Clutter is not a concern with a treatment of Vikane®. • It is safe for all household items including clothes, fine artwork, upholstery and drapes, toys and other children's belongings, dishes, and utensils. There is no need to wash/clean any of these items after exposure to Vikane® (Many of these items can be damaged if treated with other techniques like heat or freezing, and pest management professionals are not allowed to spray beds, chairs or children’s toys.) • Vikane® does NOT damage electronics, antiques or sensitive fabrics. • If you’re moving from an infested apartment or building, or you are worried about picking up bugs in transit, get your packed moving/rental truck fumigated overnight with Vikane®. • Depending on how many clothes you own, fumigating can be cheaper than dry-cleaning each item at $4-$8 each. 3. Is fumigation safe? Yes. It leaves no residue and when released post-treatment, breaks down to two naturally occurring elements that aren’t harmful to the ozone layer, the immediate environment, animals, or people. It’s as “green” as it gets. And because it leaves no residue, you don’t even have to wash the toys or your kids’ clothes before using them. 4. Can I do it myself? No. Only licensed and trained pest control professionals can purchase and use Vikane® gas fumigant. But you don’t have to hire professionals to pack your stuff or load it into a sealed truck or other container: BBFS recently launched a “D.I.Y.” rental truck fumigation program that costs about 50-60% less than hiring packers and movers. If you’re D.I.Y.-ing, make sure you follow the instructions for packing, securing and sealing your stuff (and for hauling it out of the building without spreading the problem to your neighbors). Generally speaking, glass, metal and plastic containers need to be unsealed so the gas can penetrate; cardboard moving boxes sealed with tape work just fine. 5. How much does it cost? How long does it take? Typically done overnight, fumigation using Vikane® takes several hours depending on the amount of stuff and size of the container holding all of your belongings. Check your moving truck into one of BBFS’s fumigation locations before 4 pm and it will be returned around 9 am the next day. Cost of fumigation depends on the size of the overall container (e.g., moving truck). BBFS’ rates are below; they do not include your cost to rent a moving truck or to pack up. • 10-foot moving truck (big enough for contents of average studio apartment) $499 • 14-foot truck (one- to two-bedroom apartment) $599 • 17-foot truck (1,000-1,200-square foot apartment) $699 • 20-foot truck (up to 3-bedroom single family home) $1,200 • 26-foot truck (single family four-bedroom home, or two 2-bedroom apartments) $1,500 Because you’re already paying for packing and moving costs, fumigating between moves is the most economical. But you can also save money—both on fumigation and on the expense of dealing with re-infestation--by joining forces with your neighbors (remember, bed bugs travel between apartments) and renting a large truck together. 6. Will fumigation get rid of all the bed bugs in my apartment? Only if you fumigate the entire building at once (see #6 below), which is tough in NYC. Much more commonly, the contents of an apartment are removed and fumigated elsewhere in a sealed space like a moving truck or The Fume Cube, eliminating 50-75% of your bed bugs. While your personal possessions are out of your apartment, your pest control operator (PCO) gets busy eradicating the remaining bed bug population in-unit. BBFS recommends using a combination of heat treatment, pesticides/DE, and caulk-n-seal to create a sterile, bed bug free environment for your fumigated belongings. Here's the procedure BBFS recommends that PCOs use to kill the bed bugs left behind: • Start with dry vapor steam on carpets, baseboards, walls, under built-in furniture etc. • Apply a residual pesticide, which lasts up to a few months, as well as diatomaceous earth dust (DE). • Baseboards can be treated by drilling holes into them and blowing the DE dust into crawl spaces, or the baseboards might even be peeled off and replaced. • The final step is to use caulk to seal all electrical outlets, water and electric piping coming through the walls, and holes made in baseboard trim, so that in the end, the only access bed bugs have to your apartment is through your front door via you or your belongings. 7. Can my entire building be fumigated at once? Yes. In New York City, buildings up to 10 stories tall can be wrapped in a high-density tarp and fumigated. But besides height, there are a few preconditions. Buildings can’t be connected to an adjoining one in any way (eg a shared common wall) because the gas may permeate the walls, and there can’t be any exposure to underground tunnels beneath. BBFS has fumigated several NYC brownstones at costs ranging between $5,000-$50,000 depending on the circumstances, from the size of the building to the difficulty of securing it. 8. What if my building doesn’t qualify for structural fumigation? Is there another option beside moving all my stuff out in a truck? Another option to consider if structural fumigation is not available is BBFS’s Fume Cube. Recognizing a growing need for an effective, affordable and portable fumigation solution for multi-unit urban environments, BBFS founder Gary Geiger invented the Fume Cube. The Fume Cube is a modular, insulated, sealed and temperature-controlled container wherein a BBFS technician administers a lethal dose of Vikane gas (Sulfuryl Fluoride) killing all bed bugs and their eggs within the Fume Cube without damage to personal property. The Fume Cube can be erected outside of your building (such as on the roof or in an adjoining alley or courtyard) A state-licensed BBFS fumigator applies the Vikane® gas fumigant each time the Fume Cube is filled with bed bug infested belongings --about $750-1000 for the average cube, depending on the total expected number of treatments at that Fume Cube location. By eliminating the need for a moving truck, The Fume Cube provides a convenient and cheaper onsite way to fumigate personal belongings. Some buildings opt to keep the Fume Cube even after the infestation is under control. They require that all new residents’ belongings must be fumigated along with any furniture deliveries. BBFS calls this “Source Elimination” or a “Bed Bug Checkpoint”, and it is part of their larger Integrated Bed Bug Management Plan (IBBMP). 9. What if I just want to fumigate something small, like a piece of thrift shop furniture or my luggage when I come back from a trip? Right now there are no convenient drop-off or pickup solutions that make sense for one-off items. BBFS is currently developing a solution that will address the need to treat individual items, like those too big for the Packtite, a portable household heat-treatment chamber. 10. What is a fumigation certificate/log? Once BBFS successfully completes a fumigation using Vikane, they will provide a Certificate of Fumigation and a Fume Log to you and anyone else you request detailing the specifics of the fumigation, such as the date/time(s) of fumigation, type of fumigation (structural, container, vehicle), type/amount of fumigant used, measurement control records/times, etc. In a situation where you are fleeing an infested apartment, a certificate confirming that you fumigated your belongings before entering your new place could eliminate finger pointing if bed bugs turn up in your new building. (Remember, although landlords and owners are responsible for exterminating, the person who brings bed bugs into a building can be forced to pay for it.) A fumigation certificate can help provide property owners, managers and landlords with peace of mind that their new tenants are making all possible efforts to avoid transporting bed bugs into their new digs. ________________________________________ Bed Bug Fumigation Specialists (BBFS) is the industry leading Fumigation Treatment Service specializing in bed bugs, termites, clothes moths, powder post beetles and other pest infestations. Remove the dust cover over the bottom of the box springs and examine the seams in the wood framing. Peel back the fabric where it is stapled to the wood frame. Also, check the area around the bed, including inside books, telephones or radios, the edge of the carpet, and even in electrical outlets. Check your closet, because bedbugs can attach to clothing. If you are uncertain about signs of bedbugs, call an exterminator, who will know what to look for. If you find signs of infestation, begin steps to get rid of the bugs and prevent their return. Bedbug Treatments Getting rid of bedbugs begins with cleaning up the places where bedbugs live. This should include the following: • Clean bedding, linens, curtains, and clothing in hot water and dry them on the highest dryer setting. Place stuffed animals, shoes, and other items that can't be washed in the dryer and run on high for 30 minutes. • Use a stiff brush to scrub mattress seams to remove bedbugs and their eggs before vacuuming. • Vacuum your bed and surrounding area frequently. After vacuuming, immediately place the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag and place in garbage can outdoors. • Encase mattress and box springs with a tightly woven, zippered cover to keep bedbugs from entering or escaping. Bedbugs may live up to a year without feeding, so keep the cover on your mattress for at least a year to make sure all bugs in the mattress are dead. • Repair cracks in plaster and glue down peeling wallpaper to get rid of places bedbugs can hide. • Get rid of clutter around the bed. If your mattress is infested, you may want to get rid of it and get a new one, but take care to rid the rest of your home of bedbugs or they will infest your new mattress. Bedbug Extermination While cleaning up infested areas will be helpful in controlling bedbugs, getting rid of them usually requires chemical treatments. Because treating your bed and bedroom with insecticides can be harmful, it is important to use products that can be used safely in bedrooms. Do not treat mattresses and bedding unless the label specifically says you can use them on bedding. Generally it is safest and most effective to hire an experienced pest control professional for bedbug extermination. What you should know about insecticides & other methods for treating bed bugs Property owners may purchase and apply certain pesticides to their own property, and tenants may do so (with certain exceptions) to their own apartments. Generally, owners and tenants may not, however, apply these products to common use areas or to the property of another person. A licensed pest control operator may perform these tasks more effectively, safely and legally. If one apartment or room is found infested, adjoining rooms and those immediately upstairs and downstairs should be inspected and managed, as appropriate. Carefully read the label before applying any pesticide. Apply the product only if you fully understand the instructions, and if you have the appropriate training/certification and equipment. Note that although many kinds of insecticides may be purchased via the Internet, some States restrict the sale, shipment and use of certain products. Check with your State's pesticide regulatory agency if you have any questions. Do NOT apply any insecticide or pesticide to mattresses or to surfaces that would be in direct contact with a person, unless the label instructions specifically state that the product can be applied in that manner. Some products can be harmful to people, pets the environment, and to your home. READ and UNDERSTAND the instructions and warnings on the label. Insecticide formulations used to treat bed bug infestations consist mainly of the following: Inert insecticidal dusts consist of a finely ground glass or silica powders (such as diatomaceous earth). These dry dusts may be applied in cracks and crevices, or blown into wall voids and into hollow tubular bed frames. Because these microscopic particles are hard and sharp, they may abrade the insect's cuticle, causing some direct damage and hastening water loss. Some dust formulations include other kinds of insecticides. Contact insecticides are those that kill the bugs shortly after they come into direct contact with the product or its residue. Many of these consist of one or more kinds of pyrethoids (synthetic analogs of the extract of chrysanthemum flowers). These products tend to rapidly ‘knock down’ bugs that wander over or otherwise contact the insecticide. Some pyrethroids, however, can be irritating and repellent to many insects, and bed bugs may avoid treated surfaces. Furthermore, many populations of bed bugs are resistant to certain of the pyrethroids. Other contact insecticides contain chlorfenapyr, imidacloprid or yet other active ingredients that are less repellent than some pyrethroids, and which should be effective to combat bugs resistant to pyrethroids. Insect Growth Regulators (IGR) affect the development and reproduction of insects. Although these products can be quite effective in reducing the population of the pests, they do not kill bugs quickly. Thus, pest control operators often use these products as a supplement to other kinds of insecticides. Fumigation is a highly specialized process traditionally pursued to abate structural pests (such as termites and carpenter ants) in buildings. Increasingly, it is being used to battle bed bugs. Buildings to be fumigated are emptied of people and pets, and then 'tented' (enclosed and sealed within special tarps). A pesticidal gas is then infused into the building. Special monitors, inserted into wall voids and elsewhere, ensure sufficient exposure throughout the structure. After a defined interval, the gas is then vented to the atmosphere, and the tarps removed. Once the pesticidal gas concentration has fallen below detectable levels, the structure can then be reoccupied. Fumigant gases more readily penetrate wall voids, furniture and clothing than do insecticidal powders or liquids. Such gases, however, offer no residual benefits. Hence, whereas fumigation will quickly kill any insect or other creature within a treated structure, bed bugs and other pests may be reintroduced within the possessions of residents as they reoccupy the building. Note that the fumigation methods described above are provided solely by specially licensed professional applicators. This is far different than the aerosol fogging devices (often called 'bug bombs') that can be purchased for a few dollars in retail markets. The droplets produced by aerosol foggers are far less likely than gases to penetrate cracks and crevices. Furthermore, such devices may pose a real risk to occupants as well as the dwelling being treated. Certain fumigation companies now provide services to treat individual rooms or apartments. Some offer specialized moving vans or containers in which household and office furniture, clothing and other items may be treated. Such a strategy can allow one to retain one's possessions and move them to a new residence with much assurance that bed bugs or other pests will not stowaway in the items so treated. Some items that can be sealed within plastic bags may be exposed to fumes of insecticidal vapors. Slow-release insecticidal strips (sometimes referred to as "no-pest strips" are impregnated with the insecticide dichlorvos. A strip of this material may be placed within the bag containing furniture, electronic devices or other items, taking care to protect the surface of the items to be treated. The bag is then sealed and exposed to the vapors for days to weeks, depending on the size of the bag and contents. Non-insecticidal means Chilling and freezing: As with all insects, bed bugs are cold blooded creatures. At temperatures below about 55F, bed bugs tend to become increasingly inactive. They may simply hide and wait within unheated dwellings from autumn through spring, even avoiding opportunities to take a blood meal. Hence, residents of infested dwellings may be spared bites until the indoor environment warms naturally in the springtime, or earlier as indoor heat sources activate the otherwise hibernating bugs. Bed bugs and their eggs can succumb to freezing conditions, but success depends upon many factors. The colder the temperature (below freezing), and the longer these low temperatures are maintained, the greater the chances of killing bed bugs and their eggs. The bugs may die from damage resulting mainly from ice crystal formation within their tissues, and from water loss (as the humidity tends to be very low at such cold temperatures). Furniture and other items may be 'treated' by prolonged freezing, either in deep freezing warehouses or within unheated outbuildings. Do note that bed bugs are fairly hearty and are adapted to surviving for long intervals as they wait for their hosts to return from their migrations from warmer locations. Hence, this is far from an assured method. Whereas frozen items may, in many cases, be rendered free of live bed bugs, this effort will have been in vain if the same items are then carried back into an infested dwelling. The building, itself, may be 'treated' in this manner, but this is practical mainly in seasonally-used homes or cabins at high latitudes or altitudes. Such buildings must be properly prepared to avoid damage from frozen plumbing and other risks. Some companies offer a service that relies upon the directed release of carbon dioxide (dry ice) 'snow' to freeze bed bugs and their eggs on furniture, around baseboards and elsewhere. Bugs and eggs directly contacted by the dry ice will likely be killed instantly. This method, however, may fail to penetrate well into cracks and crevices, into wall voids, and into other objects where bed bugs may be hiding. By itself, applications of dry ice in this manner should not be expected to eliminate a bed bug infestation from a home, apartment or other dwelling. Drying: Bed bugs and their eggs will die as they lose water. Water loss can result from evaporation in low humidity environments, and may be hastened if their cuticle is damaged. Bed bugs restore their water balance solely by blood feeding. Heat: At temperatures rise to 100F, bed bugs lose some vigor and their reproductive output becomes diminished. As temperatures rise further, they increasingly become burdened and their survival rate drops. Bed bugs and their eggs increasingly succumb as temperatures rise, and are maintained above, about 110 F. These lethal temperatures can be attained by use of industrial heaters operated by specialty companies. Success depends upon ensuring the lethal temperatures are attained within dwelling (including the wall voids), and amongst the contents therein. Small quantities of items (e.g. luggage) may be heated within a closed vehicle parked for many hours in full sunlight. This is practical only in summertime when the temperature within the vehicle attains temperatures lethal to bed bugs. Steam: At the point of generation, water vapor produced by boiling water can instantly kill bed bugs and their eggs. Many kinds of household and industrial devices exist to generate steam, and some are sold or operated to direct a narrow stream of steam into cracks and crevices around a room, and onto parts of furniture. Whereas this method may kill bugs and eggs treated directly, it will not likely have any effect upon those in protective shelters. Laundering of clothing (with or without bagging): Clothing that is suspected of harboring bed bugs or their eggs may be rendered free of bugs by washing in water that is sufficiently hot, or simply dried on high heat (with or without prior washing). Pressing with a hot iron will kill bugs instantly. Traditional dry cleaning methods should also kill bugs and their eggs. A pest control operator may consider and propose a variety of other methods to manage bed bugs. An infestation that affects most or all units in a building may be best managed by treating the entire building. This requires close cooperation by managers and tenants, and may require the tenants to leave the building for a few hours or even several days. Only licensed and knowledgeable pest control operators should attempt such treatments. Be aware that you may spread bed bugs from your own infested residence if you move to another apartment, home or hotel. Generally, it is best to leave your possessions in your home or apartment when it is treated. All food and eating utensils should be protected from insecticidal products. The product labels will offer additional guidance. Some building managers have allowed infested apartments to remain vacant of tenants for extended intervals in attempts to ‘out wait’ or ‘starve’ the bed bugs. This strategy would rarely make good sense, as bed bugs are well adapted to patiently wait for the return of their hosts. Each bed bug needs just one full blood meal to develop to the next developmental stage, and they can readily wait many months between feeding opportunities. Under ideal conditions, adult bed bugs can survive for more than one year between meals. Thus, infested residences should be aggressively managed to eliminate bed bugs. Other signs that you have bedbugs include: • Blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases • Dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls • Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide • An offensive, musty odor from the bugs' scent glands • • • For more tips on bedbug-proofing your space, check out Chogon Facilitie’s illustrated bedbug prevention guide. • CHOGON FACILITIES SERVICES LTD • 10 Diya Street Gbagada Lagos • +2348072292381 • info@chogonfacilities.com • www.chogonfacilities.com

6 Tips for the Treatment of Bed Bugs Got bed bugs? If you do, we are here, ready to help. At Treatment for Bed Bugs we will provide you with all the information you need to prevent, detect and treat infestations of these tiny blood sucking pests in your home. How To Recognise A Bed Bug; Adults bedbugs – measure about 1/4 inch in length and are brownish red in color, their bodies appear flat and oval shaped. Nymphs – are smaller replicas of their parents but tend to be much lighter in color. Eggs – often, likened in size, shape and color to a grain of rice. If you suspect you have bed bugs there are a few signs you can look for which should confirm your suspicions. However, the first sign of bedbugs infestation is usually bites on your body when you wake. These itchy, red welts or bumps are caused by an allergic reaction which is triggered by the bedbugs saliva which contains an anticoagulant to allow your blood to flow more freely. The rash is most often found on parts of the body which have been exposed over night such as the arms, legs and face. Scratching may cause the skin to become broken and inflamed possibly leading to a bacterial skin infection which will require medical attention. The only way to completely get rid of these bites is to use an effective treatment for bed bugs, before you can do that you have to establish whether or not you have an infestation. Checking For Signs of Bed bugs: Signs of Bed Bugs 1. Inspect your mattress in particular along seams, around buttons and handles and in creases. 2. Check the box spring (if you have one) any rips in fabric will make this an ideal hiding place, for them to live and breed. It also makes treatment for bed bugs more difficult. 3. Have a close look at sheets and other bedding. 4. Closely inspect cracks and crevices in walls, floors around window frames and door frames. 5. Our vampire friends are nocturnal i.e. they only come out at night and will often hide out in really obscure places during the day so check smoke alarms, clocks, behind picture frames, behind peeling wall paper etc. What are you looking for? Quite simply you are looking for live bedbugs but more than likely you will find dark brown/black faecal marks, discarded skins which have been cast as bedbugs mature and grow and blood splats where bugs may have been squashed on bed linen. In times gone by insecticides were used to kill these pests and they did so very successfully. However, such chemicals can be very toxic and harmful to health and in some cases the bedbugs began to build up resistance. Today, it is possible to get a complete successful treatment of bed bugs without the need for harmful insecticides by inviting CHOGO FACILITIES FUMIGATION TEAM. Six Treatment For Bed Bugs Tips: 1. De-clutter the room, place unwanted items such as newspapers, books etc. in sealed plastic bags and dispose of them. 2. Place all bed linen, clothing etc. into plastic bags which you should seal tightly (to prevent the spread of the infestation) and remove to your laundry area. Launder everything possible at high temperatures and tumble dry again, at the highest temperature possible. Items unsuitable for laundering should be placed in your drier on a high heat for at least ten minutes. Items which cannot be treated in this may possibly be steam cleaned. All laundered items should be placed in clean, sealed plastic bags to prevent re-infestation. 3. Vacuum EVERYTHING, mattress, carpets, chairs, sofas, soft furnishings and furniture (inside and out.) Don’t forget to attack any cracks and crevices using the tools on your vacuum – it may also be wise to seal up any such areas. Empty your vacuum cleaner immediately whilst in the infested room. Seal the bag and dispose of it. 4. Retrace your steps using a steam cleaner. Instantaneous steam which reaches in the region of 120oC will kill bed bugs at all stages of development including eggs. 5. Remember all the obscure places the bedbugs like to hide in during the day – alarm clocks, electrical switches and so on. 6. Finally, you may want to consider the use of a non toxic spray, fossil shell dust or traps as an additional treatment for bed bugs if you can. This treatment for bed bugs does work, however it is hard work and may take more than one attempt. 15 bugs that aren't bed bugs An exquisite if rarely discussed is finding out that there are insects you may discover on your mattress that is not, in fact, a bed bug! In the last few years, bed bug false alarms have become a bigger feature of the local pest control business, as home owners have gotten more educated about the critters—and more aggressive about calling exterminators at the first sign of a problem, experts say. John Furman, founder of Boot-A-Pest, a company that specializes in bed bug control, estimates that 80% of people who call him about bed bugs don’t have them, up from about 60% three or four years ago. Standard Pest Management had 59 fewer cases of responding to live bed bugs in 2013 and 68 more visual inspections over the previous year, says President Gil Bloom. “Things are getting treated earlier,” Bloom says. “There’s less spread.” Preliminary city-wide numbers bear that out: in 2013, there were about 1,500 bed bug complaints received by the Chogon Fumigation services Team, a 19% decline from 2012, according to Bloom. If you find a suspicious looking bug, use these strategies to make sure you're not freaking out unnecessarily: Compare your insect to these photos This photographic menagerie of beetles, cockroaches, lice and other insects None of the insects pictured is a bed bug--but all of them are species that amateurs frequently mistake for bed bugs. Send a sample The best way to diagnose a bed bug attack is to send a sample insect to an exterminator so they can evaluate it or send it to a lab for verification, says Michael Bohan, a vice president at pest control firm Assured Environments. At Assured, you can overnight your specimen to their offices, or they’ll send a messenger to pick it up free of charge, he says. Take a photo The next best way to identify your bug is to send a photo. Exterminators routinely screen potential infestations through photographs, often for free. “My truck doesn’t get rolling until I see evidence via photograph in my email,” Furman says. Indeed, more than half of all bugs can be identified from a photo, at least to the extent of determining the next step--an all clear or an in-person investigation, Bloom says. To ensure an accurate identification: • Send at least two photos, one with a clear picture of the insect and another next to a dime or ruler for scale, says Bloom. Often, customers “will put it in next to a dime, and the camera automatically will focus on the dime and blur the bug," he adds. • Take the photo on non-textured, white paper, Bloom says. If the bug is on a marble kitchen counter, for example, it’s difficult to distinguish the bug from the background. 4 ways to rat-proof your patio before the other guests arrive A friend of ours lucky enough to live in a Chelsea apartment with a rear patio noticed she had company this spring: A gypsy contingent of rats was using her rear wall as a superhighway to the restaurant next door, occasionally detouring to her place for a refueling stop. As pest management expert Chogon Facilities Services explains it, our friend's experience is not uncommon. “It’s often a matter of your neighbor’s sanitation” “If you see a restaurant next door putting their garbage out improperly, that needs to be addressed.” Rats favor restaurants that don’t put their garbage inside metal containers; dump grease (illegally) down drains; store food like bags of potatoes outside against a wall; and conduct food prep like vegetable chopping in the backyard, leaving lots of edible morsels behind. A neighbor like that can boost your local “rodent profile” from low (you may never see a rodent in your yard) to a rat-terrorized zone. Talk to the restaurant, and check out www.chogonFacilities.com for information on mounting a rat crackdown in your own neighborhood. Also take steps to make sure your own space—or the backyard next door—isn’t a rat magnet: 1. Don’t be a rat buffet : Rats only need an ounce or two of food a day, and even a piece of roll, a beer or cup of soda qualifies as a nice meal. So clean up after barbecues and your dog (rats eat that too). If you have a garden, fence it in with hardware cloth, which looks like metal graph paper. (This will also help keep out squirrels.) 2. De-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter Rats commonly dwell in foot-deep burrows, not just the subterranean depths of sewers and subway tunnels. Moreover, like all rodents, a rat thinks of itself as a hunted animal, explains Bloom. “That’s their profile in nature, so they prefer sheltered areas. If you have woodpiles or clutter or chairs stored against the wall, they’re more likely to be there than in an exposed area,” says Bloom. “If you have ground cover, like ivy, you might want to reconsider as rats like to burrow underneath sheltered areas.” 3. Put out poison “bait stations” You can buy child- and pet-resistant bait stations and rodenticide at hardware stores, or use professionally laid traps for larger areas.—i.e. rat poison-- at the hardware store. It usually only takes one feeding to ingest a lethal dose, but 3-5 days to actually kill. (Bloom says rats scuttling around in broad daylight, against their natural nocturnal urges, have usually either been starved out of the nest by dominant rats or are dying from poison.) What doesn’t work, according to research? • Red pepper spray: You have to reapply it every time it rains; if you touch it and touch your face afterward, you will be unhappy; and the spicy stuff doesn’t even make it into the mouths of rats that are chewing and gnawing • Mothballs: Not only do they not keep rats away, but they’re easily accessible and poisonous to dogs and small children. • Repellent sold in garden stores: It washes away in the first rain. 4. Eliminate straight lines Rats are “linear” by design and habit, says Bloom. “They like long lines—so don’t leave a lot of pipes and wood with long straight lines to run along.” For more tips on rat-proofing your space, check out Chogon Facilities illustrated rat prevention guide. 2. Don't panic! It can be difficult to eliminate bed bugs, but it’s not impossible. Don’t throw out all of your things because most of them can be treated and saved. Throwing stuff out is expensive, may spread the bed bugs to other people's homes and could cause more stress. 3. Think through your treatment options -- Don't immediately reach for the spray can. Be comprehensive in your approach. Try other things first. Chogon Facilities Services (CFS) techniques may reduce the number of bed bugs and limit your contact with pesticides. If pesticides are needed, always follow label directions or hire a professional. 4. Reduce the number of hiding places -- Clean up the clutter. A cluttered home provides more places for bed bugs to hide and makes locating and treating them harder. If bed bugs are in your mattress, using special bed bug covers (encasements) on your mattress and box springs makes it harder for bed bugs to get to you while you sleep. Leave the encasements on for a year. Be sure to buy a product that has been tested for bed bugs and is strong enough to last for the full year without tearing. 5. Regularly wash and heat-dry your bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads and any clothing that touches the floor. This reduces the number of bed bugs. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers/hampers Remember to clean them when you do the laundry. 6. Do-it-yourself freezing may not be a reliable method for bed bug control. While freezing can kill bed bugs, temperatures must remain very low for a long time. Home freezers may not be cold enough to kill bed bugs; always use a thermometer to accurately check the temperature. Putting things outside in freezing temperatures could kill bed bugs, but there are many factors that can affect the success of this method. 7. Kill bed bugs with heat, but be very careful. Raising the indoor temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won’t do the job. Special equipment and very high temperatures are necessary for successful heat treatment. Black plastic bags in the sun might work to kill bed bugs in luggage or small items, if the contents become hot enough. Bed bugs die when their body temperatures reaches 45°C (113°F). To kill bed bugs with heat, the room or container must be even hotter to ensure sustained heat reaches the bugs no matter where they are hiding 8. Don't pass your bed bugs on to others. Bed bugs are good hitchhikers. If you throw out a mattress or furniture that has bed bugs in it, you should slash or in some way destroy it so that no one else takes it and gets bed bugs. 9. Reduce the number of bed bugs to reduce bites. Thorough vacuuming can get rid of some of your bed bugs. Carefully vacuum rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, bed frames, under beds, around bed legs, and all cracks and crevices around the room. Change the bag after each use so the bed bugs can’t escape. Place the used bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and in an outside garbage bin. 10. Turn to the professionals, if needed. Hiring an experienced, responsible pest control professional can increase your chance of success in getting rid of bed bugs. Protecting Your Home from Bed Bugs Bed bugs are great hitchhikers. They can move from an infested site to a new home by traveling on furniture, bedding, luggage, boxes, and clothing. Although they typically feed on blood every five to ten days, bed bugs can be quite resilient; they are capable of surviving several months to a year without feeding. A few simple precautions can help prevent bed bug infestation in your home: Inspect the luggage rack in your hotel room for bed bugs. • Check second hand furniture, beds, and couches for any signs of bed bug infestation before bringing them home. • Use a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs and eliminates many hiding spots. The light color of the encasement makes bed bugs easier to see. Be sure to purchase a high quality encasement that will resist tearing and check the encasements regularly for holes. • Reduce clutter in your home to reduce hiding places for bed bugs. • Vacuum frequently to remove any successful hitchhikers. • Be vigilant when using shared laundry facilities. Transport items to be washed in plastic bags (if you have an active infestation, use a new bag for the journey home). Remove from dryer directly into bag and fold at home. (A dryer on high heat can kill bed bugs.) • If you live in a multi-family home, try to isolate your unit by: o Installing door sweeps on the bottom of doors to discourage movement into hallways. o Sealing cracks and crevices around baseboards, light sockets, etc., to discourage movement through wall voids. • Consider purchasing a portable heating chamber to treat any items that you believe may have bed bugs. Non-Chemical Methods • Put bedding and clothing in the dryer at high temperatures for 30 minutes to kill bed bugs (just washing will generally not kill bed bugs). • Heat infested articles (e.g., furniture, luggage, other items that can't go in a clothes dryer) and/or areas (i.e., a room in a house or apartment, or a whole house) to at least 120 ºF (approx. 49 ºC) for 90 minutes to ensure that eggs are killed. o The higher the temperature, the shorter the time needed to kill bed bugs at all life stages. o This is often done using a heat-generating device or in a specially constructed heating unit, some of which are portable. • Cold treatments (below 0 ºF (-19 ºC) for at least 4 days) can eliminate some infestations. o The cooler the temperature, the less time needed to kill bed bugs. o Home freezers may not cold enough to reliably kill bed bugs. Always use a thermometer to measure the temperature. • Use mattress, box spring, and pillow encasements to trap bed bugs and help detect infestations. • Use monitoring devices to ensure that the bed bugs have been truly eradicated. Using Pesticides • Use a comprehensive strategy for controlling bed bugs - pesticides should be only one part of a multi-part IPM plan. • Currently, there are over 300 products registered by EPA for use against bed bugs -- the vast majority of which can be used by consumers. Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Despite their role in an adorable bedtime proverb, bed bugs are pesky little pests. They sneak into your bed, your furniture, even your carpet, and while you sleep or watch TV, they bite you. The next morning, you’re left wondering why you’re red and itchy. We share the symptoms of the bites and where the bugs hide. What Are Bed Bugs? Bed bugs are small, flat, oval-shaped insects. They do not have wings and rely on humans to carry them from one place to the next. Bed bugs are a reddish brown color and can be between 1 millimeter and 7 millimeters. They feed on blood from humans or animals, and they’re most active at night, feeding on their victims while they sleep. What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like? Some people will not experience a reaction to a bed bug bite at all. Those that do experience symptoms of a bite are likely to experience one or more of the following: • a bite with a red, swollen area and a dark red center • bites in a line or grouped together in a small area • blisters or hives at the bite site(s) Bites can happen anywhere on the body. Most commonly they occur on areas of skin that are exposed while sleeping, such as the face, arms, legs, and hands. What Are the Symptoms of a Bed Bug Bite? Bed bug bites don’t always appear immediately after you’re bitten. They sometimes take a few days to begin causing symptoms. It should also be noted that bed bugs don’t come out to feed every single night—they can go several days without eating. It may take a few weeks to notice that your bites are part of a larger pattern. Bed bug bites are often very itchy. You may experience a burning sensation on the skin several days after you’ve been bitten. You won’t feel the bugs bite you because they excrete a tiny amount of anaesthesia into your body before they bite. If you scratch the bite, you may cause a secondary infection that can lead to swelling and bleeding. What Other Bites Resemble a Bed Bug Bite? Unless you know you have a bed bug infestation or that you slept in an infested bed, you may not know to consider bed bugs as a possible cause of your mysterious bites. If you react to their bites, they may become slightly swollen with an itchy, irritating red center. When this happens, they visually resemble mosquito or flea bites in their earliest stages. However, bed bug bites can appear in small groupings or in a straight line. Mosquito bites are more sporadic. Flea bites remain very small and are typically located on your legs or ankles. Can Bed Bug Bites Cause Other Problems? Good news: unlike many other biting bugs, bed bugs do not transmit diseases when they bite you. The biggest problem bed bug bites pose is that they are likely to cause a skin infection around the bite site as a result of excessive itching and scratching. You may also be more likely to experience insomnia as a result of worrying that you will be bitten again. If you are allergic to a bed bug’s bite, you may experience more dramatic symptoms. The most common symptoms of an allergic reaction to a bed bug bite include engorged bite marks, painful swelling and burning at the bite site, and, in rare cases, an anaphylactic response. Where Are Bed Bugs Found? If you suspect that you have bed bug bites, it’s important to look into the matter. Waiting for more bites prolongs the problem. Bed bugs were once rare, but in recent years, the pests are seeing a surge in population. Bed bugs are most common in facilities that have a lot of people, a lot of turnover, and close quarters. However, they can also come into your home if brought there. Listed below are the places that most commonly have bed bugs: • hotels • hospitals • homeless shelters • military barracks • college dorms • apartment complexes • business offices If I Have Them in My Home, How Will I Know? Bed bugs like to hide where you sleep. If you find bites and suspect bed bugs, search around for them. You may not see the bugs themselves, but you might see tiny black dots—their droppings—or red smears—signs they’ve been biting you. Most common hiding sites for bed bugs in your home: • bed frame • headboard • mattress • box springs • pillows • bed skirts • in the crevices and seams of furniture • in carpeting at baseboards or under furniture • in curtains or other fabrics How Are Bed Bugs Treated? Bed bugs are more annoying than they are dangerous or deadly. The symptoms of a bite typically disappear in one to two weeks. Use an anti-itch cream to keep yourself from itching the bite. Take an antihistamine to help reduce the itching and burning, too. Ice packs can help numb the skin and reduce your urge to scratch. Use an antiseptic cream or lotion if you get an infection. Get Rid of Bed Bugs for Good! If you find bed bugs in your home, call your landlord or pest control company to have your home treated. Getting rid of bed bugs yourself is hard, and you may prolong your infestation if you do not get professional treatment. Bed bugs can hide for several months without feeding, so getting a professional treatment can help you make sure you’re getting rid of the blood-sucking pests completely. 10 Things You Should Clean--But Don't You touch it. Other people touch it. But do you ever clean it? We're talking about everyday items that most people never think to swab down, such as credit cards, ceiling fans and toilet paper holders. The Huffington Post's Style List assembled a list of the top 10 most dirty, dusty and germy places in your home and how to clean them. Print this out! It's your weekend to-do list. 1. Credit/Debit Cards you’re not the only one handling your credit and debit cards. Other people touch them, too--and who knows when they last washed their hands or what they touched five minutes ago. Even if you only swipe your card and never hand it over, what is lurking inside that card-swipe machine or ATM? Grab some disinfectant wipes and take a minute or two to clean your credit cards. Do let them dry completely before returning them to your wallet. 2. Electronics Your electronics--from your cell phone to your e-reader--are coated in germs and the level of contamination is horrible. Some studies show cell phones contain 18 times more germs than toilet handles. Swab them down with disinfectant wipes. 3. Toothbrush Holders want to see something gross? Take your toothbrush out of the holder and peer inside. Do you see mold? Discoloration? Grime? That could end up in your mouth! Pour a solution of one part bleach and three parts water into the toothbrush holder and let it soak for an hour. Rinse and dry upside down on a dish rack. 4. The Bottom of Throw Rugs This is easy and fast to do and will help keep your wood floors cleaner for a longer time. When vacuuming, turn over the throw rugs and vacuum the underside. 5. The Top of Large Appliances They're too tall for you to see it with a step stool, but the top of your refrigerator, stove vents and other big appliances are dusty and grimy on top. Wipe down the surfaces with white vinegar and rinse with a water-lemon mixture. Dry it with a clean cloth. If you can move them, do the same thing with the bottom of the appliances. 6. Ceiling Fans Pull out a ladder and look at the top of your ceiling fans. Chances are, there is a thick layer of dust on them, which could contain residue particles that resemble mold on ripe fruit. Turn on the fan, and those particles are dispersed throughout the room. To clean the top of the ceiling fan, put two tablespoons of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spritz the solution into an old pillowcase. Insert the pillowcase around the fan blade and drag the bag along the bag's surface. This will collect and clean the dust. Use a clean cloth to clean up anything that remains on the blades. 7. Toilet Roll Holders when you flush the commode, water inside the toilet bowl is sprayed around the area--including the toilet roll holder. Disinfect it once a month with a sanitizing wipe or clean it with bleach and water solution. 8. Box Springs ever look underneath your bed? Chances are the box spring is covered in dust. It's easy to clean with a vacuum hose. 9. Light Switches Bacteria is easily and quickly transferred from person to person in your home just by touching the light switches. Spray rubbing alcohol or an all-purpose cleaner into a clean cloth and wipe the switch and plate until they are clean and grease-free. 10. Salt and Pepper Shakers When the salt and pepper shakers are empty, clean them in the dishwasher before refilling them. These common household items are known to contain the highest concentrations of germs that cause cold and flu viruses. Between washings, use disinfectant wipes to sanitize the outside surface. Spring Cleaning Tips Living Room: Media Center As the focal point of the living room, the media center easily becomes the catchall for stray magazines, books, video games, remote controls, etc. If not contained, the pileup can spread throughout the house—not to mention become a huge eyesore. Solve the problem by introducing like-colored boxes and baskets to contain the clutter, recommends cleaning blogger Beth Bathroom: Floor Hair, toothpaste, styling gels, perfume, dust, makeup—thanks to gravity, all these products find their way to the floor, so focus your cleaning efforts there. Not only will scrub the tiles and shaking out (or replacing) the rugs prevent you and your family from dragging grime throughout the house, it will instantly freshen the air. In other words, a clean floor allows you to both feel (on your feet!) and smell the cleanliness. That's one cleaning job that does double duty! Kitchen: Refrigerator When your fridge, the hub of the kitchen, is out of order, it becomes much more difficult to find things, plan meals and figure out what you need to replace, which creates unnecessary chaos and clutter—not to mention waste! Emptying the fridge, using antibacterial spray to wipe down the shelves, trays and borders and restocking in an organized fashion that makes sense for you. Suggests simply tossing half-used condiments, old juices or soda jugs, and takeout containers to make the difference. Bedroom: Closet Organizing your closet is an indirect way of organizing your bedroom,. "If items have a specific place to live, they're much less likely to end up on your bed, floor or flung over furniture." Shoes crowding the floor space? Try a hanging organizer or under-the-bed bin. Dirty gym clothes piling up faster than you can keep up with? Get as many hampers as you need. Taking a systematic approach to storing each type of item keeps your closet in line, which will help the rest of your room reap the rewards? When you're done Basement, Attic and Garage: Clutter Household storage spaces are inevitably where the extra furniture, sports equipment, clothes and other miscellany end up when they've been replaced by newer items, which makes clutter build up the biggest setback to keeping them clean. "Attack those zones with these goals in mind: The transparency will prevent you from having to unstack and dig through storage containers every time you're looking for something specific, which will help keep the space tidy longer. Patio: Furniture Because it's an outdoor space, you may be able to get away with leaving the ground alone. But you're less likely to achieve a clean look if you don't wipe down tables, seats and upholstery. Besides, nothing deters people from spending time on the patio like furnishings caked with grime. Tackling iron or plastic pieces with a damp paper towel; glass surfaces with window cleaner; wood pieces with furniture cleaner and an old rag; and upholstery with a heavy-duty upholstery cleaner, Laundry Room: Dirty Clothes The biggest setback to keeping your laundry room organized is the mounds of clothes that need washing, especially if you have a big family. Solution? A sorting hamper or several stackable laundry baskets. Dining Room: Dust Since the dining room is often the least-used room in the house, it tends to collect the most dust. If you have the time, take everything off your tables, shelves and collection hutches and clear out debris using a traditional feather duster or furniture polish. Circle Your Way Around: Always begin on the right side of your stove, then move clockwise around the room. The stove is typically the dirtiest part of the kitchen, so ending with it keeps you from spreading dirt and grease. (First, soak drip pans and knobs in warm soapy water. By the time you've worked your way around, they'll be easier to clean. Sanitize the Sink: It's hard to believe, but your dirty kitchen sink has more bacteria than your toilet seat. Use a product labelled as an EPA-registered disinfectant, or makes your own. To disinfect, clean your sink with soap and water first, then spray a mist of vinegar followed by a mist of hydrogen peroxide, and let air-dry. (Don't mix the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide together—spray one after the other.) If your sink is stainless steel, make it sparkle afterward by putting a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and buffing. This prevents water build up, which deters mold and keeps the sink looking clean longer. Do Dishwasher Duty: Once a week, shake baking soda on a damp sponge and wipe around the machine's edges to remove stuck-on food or stains. Add a quarter-cup of bleach to the regular dish cycle to kill bacteria. The dishes will be safe and sanitized after the rinse cycle is finished. Love Your Oven: Keep the heart of your kitchen clean by lining the bottom with a non-stick oven liner. It can be wiped with a paper towel, put in the dishwasher, and reused over and over. Disinfect the Disposal: To get rid of odours, drop in a cut-up lemon, some salt and a few ice cubes. The lemon deodorizes, and the ice and salt clean away residue. Crumple Paper Towels…Forever: Use microfiber cloths instead. When wet, they sanitize and clean floors, counters, glass and tile, and eliminate the need for other cleaning products. They're reusable (machine-wash, hang to dry) Clean as You Go: Wipe up any spills immediately—don't give sauces, oils or spices a chance to sit around. Zap the Sponge: We all know that sponges can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfect yours every night by squeezing it out and microwaving it on high for a minute. When it's shredded and smelly, replace it. Bathroom Boosters Make Doors Shine: Rubbing a teaspoon of lemon oil on glass shower doors twice a month causes water to bead up and roll off. Get a Cleaner Liner: Mold and mildew attacking your shower curtain liner? Throw it in the wash with a few towels, which will help scrub it clean, then hang it back up to dry. Corral Strays: Keep drains free of hair and clogs by using a product like Drano or Liquid-Plume to make sure potential clogs are gone, then pour boiling water down drains once a week to keep problem-free. Get rid of those annoying stray hairs on the floor by sweeping them up with a damp wad of toilet paper every morning. Sweeping Solutions Cleaning should always be done top to bottom. That way, any crumbs or dust that fall to the floor while you're working get picked up last. And believe it or not, there's a right way to sweep. Pick the Right Broom: For indoors, choose one with finer bristles to pick up smaller dirt particles. For outdoors, go for stronger, stiffer bristles, which work better to clear porous surfaces. Get Swept Away: To sweep, hold the broom like a canoe paddle, with one hand on top of the handle and the other toward the middle. Push your hands in opposite directions to get the most out of every sweeping stroke. Sweep from the outside in so that you don't miss any spots, and move the dirt to the center of the room, where it will be easy to pick up. Super Storage: Store brooms with the handle down. It makes them easier to find and protects the bristles. Banish Dust Bunnies: Pick the proper dustpan. Minimize that annoying line of dust by choosing a dustpan with a rubber edge. Bedroom Secrets Start with the Bed: If your bed is made, your bedroom looks neat. When you wake up, pull the covers up to your chin, then scissor-kick your way out of bed so it'll be half made. Finish the job before you walk away. Address Your Drawers: Most women have drawers full of clothes they don't wear, and their dresser tops then become repositories for things they can't store. Get rid of things you haven't worn in a year and vow to put away your clean laundry each week. Keep Just the Essentials: Have a "pamper basket" next to your bed with a book, some moisturizer, your knitting or something else you like to do in bed. Then keep your clock, a lamp and a box of tissues on your nightstand. That's it. Conquer Laundry Stave Off Static: Since fabric softener and dryer sheets can strip towels of their absorbency, add ¼ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle or throw two (new, clean) tennis balls in your dryer to get rid of static electricity, soften fabrics and eliminate the need for dryer sheets. Switch on the Cold: Most everything can be washed in cold water (better for your bills and the environment). But use the hottest water possible for sheets, towels and underwear. Take special care with undergarments, putting them in the dryer as soon as possible to stop bacteria growth while they sit damp in the washer. Go Corner to Corner: When you're vacuuming, begin in the farthest corner and work toward the door, using slow, repetitive front-to-back motions in an overlapping sequence, says Julie Rosenblum. As you look over the freshly vacuumed floor, you shouldn't see any footprints. Velcro Away Clutter: Label the bottom of each electronic game controller (Xbox, for example), and then Velcro it to the console, suggests Linda Cobb. You'll never search for them again. Make a Lost-and-Found: Every house needs one. Use a cute vintage lunch box or lidded storage container to stash lost game pieces, stray screws and buttons, and similar small items. When you need the item, you'll know where to look first. Do Quick Rescues: Do a 5-minute sweep through each room, taking a laundry basket with you. Place in it anything that doesn't belong in that room, then put away the stuff that does belong there. Stop Clutter at the Front Door: Mount a plastic or cloth shoe rack inside your front entry closet door, and use it to stash all kinds of living room and family room miscellany—toys, hats, gloves, magazines. You can even designate one of the pockets for mail you're not sure whether to save or toss. Bed Bugs - What They Are and How to Control Them Bed bugs have been around for thousands of years. They feed on blood, but are not known to spread any diseases to humans. Some people can be allergic to their bites. Getting rid of a bed bug infestation is not easy, but there are steps you can take to control the problem. There are also steps you can take to avoid bringing bed bugs home. What are bed bugs? • Bed bugs are small, flat wingless insects that are reddish-brown in color and approximately one-quarter inch long, before feeding (about the size and shape of a small apple seed). • They hide during the day on beds (mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, head boards) and in cracks and crevices of walls, floors and furniture. They come out at night. • They do not fly or jump, but they can crawl rapidly. How bed bugs get into homes! • They can come from other infested areas or from used furniture. They can hitch a ride in luggage, purses, backpacks, or other items placed on soft or upholstered surfaces. • They can travel between rooms in multi-unit buildings, such as apartment complexes and hotels. How to avoid bringing bed bugs into your home! • When staying in a hotel, place your bag on a suitcase stand rather than on the bed or floor. Keep the rack away from walls or furniture. When returning home, wash the clothes from your trip and put them in a hot dryer. • Inspect new and used furniture before bringing it inside. Look in seams, tufts and under cushions. How to know if you have a bed bug problem! • You can see the bed bugs themselves, their shed skins, or their droppings in mattress seams and other items in the bedroom. • There may also be blood stains on sheets. How to control a bed bug problem in your home! It can be done, but it usually requires what is called an "integrated pest management" (IPM) approach. This combines techniques that pose the lowest risk to your health and the environment. Try these strategies: • Clean and get rid of clutter, especially in your bedroom. • Move your bed away from walls or furniture. • Vacuum molding, windows and floors every day. Vacuum sides and seams of mattresses, box springs and furniture. Empty the vacuum or the bag immediately and dispose of outside in a sealed container or bag. • Wash sheets, pillow cases, blankets and bed skirts and put them in a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes. Consider using mattress and box spring covers –the kind used for dust mite control–and put duct tape over the zippers. • Seal cracks and crevices and any openings where pipes or wires come into the home. Try Pesticides! Pesticides may not be effective and can be dangerous if used improperly. If you decide to use pesticides, follow these rules: • Only use pesticides that are registered and make sure they are labelled to control bed bugs. • Do not apply pesticides directly to your body (there are no repellents registered to control bed bugs that can be used on the human body). • Do not use outdoor pesticides indoors. • If you decide to hire a pest control company, make sure it’s Chogon Facilities Services Ltd we are experienced with bed bugs. It takes time and persistence to get rid of bed bugs, and in some cases, the cooperation of landlords, neighbours and others. It can be physically and emotionally exhausting. It can also be expensive when pest control companies are called in. Just remember - bed bugs are more of a nuisance than a health concern and, with vigilance, you can avoid or deal with infestations. How to Clean a Rug Rugs can be beautiful additions to your home, but they can be expensive and at times delicate. By understanding how to clean rugs, you will also be able to preserve your investment. There are a few very common mistakes that people make when it comes to cleaning area rugs. These mistakes can end up subtracting years from the life of your rugs, and they should be avoided. These tips -- ranging from vacuuming to spraying to pet odors and spills -- can keep your rugs looking new for as long as possible. 1 The best way to keep your area rug looking its best is once a month flip it upside down and vacuum the back of the rug. It is okay to use a beater bar/rotating brush vacuum on the back of a wool rug, on the front it is recommended to only use suction. Vacuuming the back with the beater bar/rotating brush helps push dirt trapped deep down toward the top of the rug. The rug is then flipped right side up and this dirt is vacuumed. For synthetic area rugs it is fine to use the beater bar/rotating brush vacuum on the front and back of the rug. 2 It is not advisable to vacuum fringes/tassels. When you run the vacuum over the fringes they get sucked into the beater bar of your vacuum. The fringes do not need to be vacuumed at all. Fluffing them by hand is all they need. Anything else can cause damage to them. 3 Be aware of carpet shampoos or sprays! Carpet shampoos are usually made for synthetic wall to wall carpet not wool area rugs. Always check the label before using any spot cleaners or rug shampoos. When you use a spotter or shampoo make sure you rinse it all out. If there is any soap residue left in the rug it will attract dirt. Always test your rug with a damp white cotton towel to make sure the colors will not run or bleed. 4 Make sure that you clean up spills or stains as as soon as they occur. Blot or scrape the spillage up depending on the type of spill. Blot, using a clean white 100% cotton dry towel and pressing down very hard from the outside towards the middle. Do this repeatedly, turning the folded towel over and over until you have absorbed as much moisture as possible. When you blot the spot move the towel in straight lines, NEVER RUB IN A CIRCLE, THIS CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO YOUR RUG. If the spillage is milk care must be taken to rinse the area thoroughly with mild detergent and water to prevent souring of the residue. For red wine spills, use equal parts of 10% hydrogen peroxide and Dawn liquid dish soap apply to cotton towel and blot. 5 Neutralize pet odours by mixing 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water and blot with white towel. Tips • Weekly vacuuming of both sides is ideal. If that’s not possible, you should do it at least once every two weeks. • It is recommended that you rotate your rugs at least once a year. This means turning the rug end for end or 180 degrees. This helps the rug to wear more evenly. You may also want to rearrange your furniture to change traffic patterns. • After you have removed a spill from your rug it needs to be dried as quickly as possible, a fan can aid in this. • When you use any type of spot removers always put the spotter on white cotton and then blotting the spot. Putting the spotter on the rug can make removing the spot tougher or can make the spot into a stain, which is permanent. • If your rug gets really wet from a flood or other water source, get it to a professional rug cleaner as soon as possible to help prevent permanent damage to your area rug. • Another way that you can clean your carpet is by renting or purchasing a carpet cleaner/extractor. This type of machine will do a fairly good job of cleaning your carpet superficially, but because they don't have the ability to actually steam the fibres, all of the stains and dirt may not be removed. These types of machines are made for synthetic wall to wall carpet or upholstery. • Rugs should be rolled, not folded. When transporting in a moving van, a rolled rug should be placed on top of furniture and then have nothing heavier than a lampshade placed on top of the rug. Folding can cause permanent creases or wrinkles in your area rug. • Rugs and carpets eventually get dirty. For the best possible clean get a professional area rug cleaner to do the job For more details contact us at: Chogon Facilities Services Ltd +2348072292381 info@chogonfacilities.com www.chogonfacilities.com

This type of machine will do a fairly good job of cleaning your carpet superficially, but because they don't have the ability to actually steam the fibers, all of the stains and dirt may not be removed.

1. Make sure you really have bed bugs, not fleas, ticks or other insects. Living Room Cleaning Tips The key to a clean home is cleaning it consistently. At Chogon Cleaning Services, we follow a house cleaning routine that ensures that all of your spaces are as clean as possible. For your personal cleaning needs, we suggest following this simple house cleaning schedule: • Daily: On a daily basis, collect any toys, mail, etc. that has accumulated over the course of the day and put them in a pile in the middle of the room. One by one, put them where they belong. • Weekly: On one day per week, dust around the room - working left to right and top to bottom. From there, you can move on to cleaning your coffee table and other surfaces. After dusting, it is also a good time to vacuum your furniture, removing and rotating sofa cushions to encourage even wear and increase their useful life. • Monthly: Move your furniture and vacuum beneath it. Wash your windows as well (weather permitting, i.e. above 50 degrees). You should also clean your furniture as necessary. • Yearly: On a yearly basis, you should evaluate your living room, taking care to de-clutter and dusting anything that is hard to reach (i.e. ceiling fan) using a ladder as necessary. This is also a good opportunity to clean your fireplace if you have one. How Do I Remove Streaks from Stainless Steel Appliances? You've worked hard to make sure your stainless steel appliances are clean and sanitary—so of course you want that work to show! First identify the grain of the stainless steel and always work in the same direction as the grain. Then using a clean, cotton cloth and some glass cleaner (or specialty stainless steel cleaner), buff potential streaky finishes until they shine. Keep your eyes peeled at all times for water spots and potential streak problems. One quick tip for a stubborn microwave is to place a cup of water in the machine and boil it for a few minutes. This loosens up debris and grime in the microwave for easy cleaning. After you've scrubbed the microwave, fridge, dishwasher and stove clean, drain your sink, spray in some all-purpose cleaner and use a brush to thoroughly remove any trace of your cleaning solution. Finish cleaning your kitchen by sweeping or vacuuming the floor, then mop it. Ripening fruit, dirty dishes and sticky counters are usually what attract fruit flies. If your clean kitchen is still attracting flies, try running your garbage disposal on a regular basis or trap the fruit flies with an apple cider vinegar solution. Kitchen Cleaning Schedule Maintain a clean kitchen by creating a consistent schedule. Use the following timetable to keep the kitchen tidy: Daily: Every day wipe surfaces, do dishes, put dishes away and sweep the floor. Weekly: On a weekly basis, the daily tasks should be combined with a mopping of the kitchen floor. This is when you should also tackle the more involved dishwashing tasks, such as cleaning foggy wine glasses and polishing stained silver. Monthly: You should ensure that all cabinets, pantries and your refrigerator are cleared of unnecessary or outdated food and miscellaneous items that are no longer needed, maintaining the order of your cold- and room-temperature storage areas. Yearly: Once per year (at least) you should deep clean your kitchen space. This means that your cleaning should reach to the back of every cabinet and pantry, extend to a dismantled refrigerator interior (for separate washing of each surface), reach under that refrigerator and stove, and get to the ceiling, light fixtures, etc. Basically, this yearly cleaning should be as deep as possible. This form of maintenance is especially important for this space, where perishable food items are handled every day. Now it's time to congratulate yourself on a job well done! Enjoy your new kitchen with a home-cooked meal. Bathroom Cleaning Schedule No matter which rooms are included as part of your Chogon cleaning service, our goal is to provide a quality clean that makes your entire home feel better. Also keep a small hand held vacuum to use on the floors each day. • Weekly: Once per week, combine the above duties with a thorough cleaning of the shower/tub, toilet and surfaces. Mop the floor weekly as well. • Monthly: Once per month, be sure to organize all of your cabinets and closets within your bathroom spaces. This helps maintain an easy order within these storage spaces. • Yearly: With regular maintenance, a bathroom should not require a deep, yearly clean. Items to clean occasionally include taking down blinds and giving them a soak in all-purpose cleaner and washing your plastic shower curtain in cold water. PEST CONTROL TIPS Every home-dweller has to eventually contend with pests such as insects, raccoons, and rodents. But don't fret: There are time-proven ways to deter and eradicate these little beasts. We've collected some here: Insects • Keep ants away from your home with a concoction of borax and sugar. Mix 1 cup sugar and 1 cup borax in a quart jar. Punch holes in the jar's lid, and sprinkle the mixture outdoors around the foundation of your home and around the baseboards inside your house. The ants are attracted by the sugar and poisoned by the borax. • If you have cockroaches, sprinkle borax powder in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Avoid sprinkling where children and pets could be affected. • If there's a hornet, wasp, bee or other flying insect in your house and you have no insect spray, kill it with hair spray. • If your home becomes infested with fleas, vacuum rugs thoroughly before spraying, and throw the dust bag out at once. • Change the water in a birdbath every 3 days to help reduce the mosquito population. • The presence of carpenter ants indicates another problem. Because they're fond of damp wood, you should check your pipes, roof and windowsills for water leaks. • Centipedes prey on other bugs, so the presence of centipedes in your house may indicate the presence of other insects as well. • You can distinguish termite damage from other insect damage by examining any holes you find in wood. Termites usually eat only the soft part of wood, leaving the annual rings intact. • If you live in a multiunit building, any pest control measures you take individually will be ineffective in the long run simply because insects can travel form one apartment to another. To eliminate bugs completely, the entire building should be treated at one time. Raccoons and Rodents • Raw bacon or peanut butter makes good bait for a mousetrap. Make sure a mouse will have to tug the trap to remove the bait. If you're using peanut butter, dab some on the triggering device and let it harden before setting the trap. If bacon is your bait, tie it around the triggering device. • If a raccoon sets up housekeeping in your attic or chimney, chemical repellents such as oil of mustard -- are temporarily effective. (The smell may bother you as much as it does the raccoon.) Your best bet is to let the animal leave, and then cover its entrance hole with wire mesh so that it cannot return. • To keep rodents out of your house, seal every opening they could squeeze through. Some need less than 1/4 inch of space. Put poison in deep cracks or holes, and stuff them with steel wool or scouring pads pushed in with a screwdriver. Close the spaces with sparkling compound mixed with steel wool fragments. What’s a security guard? Security guards are crime, threat and risk prevention officers assigned to protect specific people and property. This may include detecting some of the same offenses that would cause a peace officer to act, such as a fight or burglary. But it would not include other offenses such as motor vehicle traffic violations or car accident. The security guard’s concern is to protect persons and prevent damage or destruction to property. PREVENTION is the key word. So fundamentally, the job duties and responsibilities of a security guard are not the same as a peace officer or police officer. Instead, security guards are in the prevention business. It is their job to act as a deterrent to crime, to watch for impending danger and to report crimes they may encounter. Their roles may seem the same from a far, but essentially their functions differ and here’s why; • SECURITY GUARDS are paid to only protect specific people and property. • POLICE (PEACE OFFICERS) are paid to protect all people and all property and enforce laws. Besides the different scope of protection offered by security guards and peace officers, the major difference is that one enforces law while the other doesn’t. For instance, when a security guard apprehends a criminal, he has no right whatsoever to arrest the criminal. His duty is to inform the closest police station of the incidence, because it’s only them who can make the arrest. The 6 Essential Roles And Responsibilities Of Security Guards Not every security guard is trained to fill the following roles and perform the following responsibilities. You only get this when you hire Chogon Guards and Safety! Prevention • A security guard’s role is to PROTECT people and property of his employer or contracted clients. So, the major responsibility of a security guard is prevention BEFORE an incident/offense occurs. The absence of incidents or offenses (crimes) is one sign that a security guard is doing a good job. Visibility • Security guards should remain visible as a deterrent to criminals. Thefts, damage and injuries can be thwarted when the perpetrators see a security guard. So, a security guard should be highly visible. By being seen, the guard may discourage anyone who might be considering theft, damage, or personal injury. Vigilance • Security guards must remain alert to watch for abnormal activity or hear any unusual sounds. A security guard’s job is PREVENTION. To do the job well, the security guard MUST: Be alert, Listen and Watch. In fact, security guards should be suspicious of any activity that may draw them away from their post. It could be a plan to draw their attention away from their duties. Observe and Report • A security guard’s responsibility DURING or AFTER an incident/offense has occurred is to OBSERVE and REPORT. If an offense occurs, a guard does not charge in. Instead, the security guard should: • Stay calm • Observe and remember events • Report to the police/or the security guard’s supervisor (follow employer policy). SITUATION SECURITY GUARD’S ROLE BEFORE the incident: PREVENTION DURING OR AFTER the incident: OBSERVE AND REPORT Getting Help • During dangerous situations, such as robbery, burglary, or assault with a deadly weapon, the security guard will need help to apprehend the suspect. This involves calling the police immediately. Even the police who are trained to apprehend criminals are encouraged to call for help in dangerous situations. Team Player • Security guards sometime assume a team player role when he/she is responsible for maintaining certain miscellaneous rules and policies established by the client (company/individual). These could include: • Requiring employees to show their badges when entering the property; or • Inspecting lunch pails as employees leave the plant; or • Monitoring safety standards and reporting hazards; blocked exits, fire safety, slippery floors, etc. A guard’s supervisor or the client (company/individual) will give him instructions on carrying out other miscellaneous rules and policies. Conclusion The essential roles and responsibilities of security guards are classified into six. They are; 1. Prevention 2. Visibility 3. Vigilance 4. Observe and Report 5. Getting Help 6. When a company has reached a certain size, it is far more likely to be targeted by criminals, whether they’re looking to simply steal physical property, or to gain access to financial information that they could then use for their own ends. Because of this, it is extremely sensible to invest in some form of protection for your business. Manned guarding – that is, fully trained security guards that work within your premises – is one of the most popular forms. For those who still aren’t quite sure about the idea, we’ve put together this list of tips on how manned guarding can work for you: Firstly, it will give your business premises a visual presence of security. Whilst it might not seem like much, you’d be amazed how easily criminals can be deterred from trying to access a building when there is a physical security presence – in psychological terms, it can be extremely deterring, giving the impression (indeed, an accurate impression) that because the business are security conscious enough to hire a proper guard, they are also likely to have other security systems in place. Secondly, having an on-site security guard will make your staff far more comfortable working later hours, which is ideal if you run a building built around sales or customer service. Let’s face it, no-one really wants to work a late shift if they’re in a deserted old building: offices can get pretty creepy when absolutely everyone else has gone home! A security guard at the front desk can offer a re-assuring presence, and as a result help to increase your productivity. Thirdly, manned guarding means that through use of video surveillance and the like, you can ensure that even a larger site can be kept secure with just one or two members of staff. This is ideal if your business operates across bigger premises. Many manned guarding services (such as UK asset protection) can provide your company with a total security solution, meaning that however big your premises, you can rest assured that it’s kept safe. It’s also important to note that manned guarding will also mean that you’ve met your obligations as an employer. It is your responsibility to make sure that the staff on your premises are safe. Obviously some situations simply can’t be controlled, but in the event of any investigation, it’s important to be able to demonstrate how seriously your company takes the safety of its staff. Finally, and most importantly, manned guarding will mean that should any incident take place, there will be a professional on-site to help keep both your staff and your property safe. Security guards are trained professionals, and will know how to make sure that proper procedure is met regarding the containment of any issues as well as being able to liaise effectively with the police in the event of them needing to be called. This level of professionalism is invaluable to anybody. FOR MORE DETAILS CONTACT: 10, DIYA STREET, GBAGADA, LAGOS-NIGERIA +2348072292381 info@chogonguards.com www.chogonguards.com
