Aig84:I used Cambridge materials to prepare for the listening and reading tests. Didn't prepare much for speaking and writing as I believed myself to be a good speaker/writer (that's contestable). The Cambridge materials were quite tough especially the MAP style questions so it really helps to practice. Funny thing is I never scored above 36 in the listening but thank God. It really helps to identify weak areas and work on those e.g. pronunciation/spelling etc. You need maximum concentration and I advise you anticipate some answers ahead: for some of the listening questions, I already made a best guess based on the preceding sentences and some were correct. The reading was tougher than I expected though but you need to practice speed reading and skimming through text: you don't have to read the entire paragraph to get an idea of what it's about. For the writing test my approach was to write as much as possible so they may pity me and dash me small mark: I used an extra sheet for Writing test 2 because when I read what I wrote so far, I wasn't convinced it would give me a good score. In the end, if your score gives you the minimum points required, you may want to focus on other avenues to boost your CRS. |
I wrote my IELTS test on APR 29. Scores were L:9 W:7.5 R:8 S:8. Trying to bombard WES with emails and hounding them on twitter too so I can get my ECA asap. Thank you all for the tips; this is like the best thread for my current needs. |

Heads Up!!! Just in case your're an engineer please go and brush up on your engineering knowledge. I must say that the test was rubbish cos it was a knowledge and not an aptitude test which most big companies don't do these days. Application of integration, flow, distributed loads, Thevenin, etc. I know I'm not gonna make it past this stage (graduated more than 4 years ago so I'm not into these kinda calculations any more) so I thought I should give the engineers a heads-up. |
