I don't really know what role he'd bring to the team. His coming would cause the exit of Mata apparently cos I think they both got similar attributes.

carvalho is a defensive midfielder not a deep lying playmaker.
verrati is the perfect replacement for Carrick.

What we need more urgently I think is a DM/holding midfielder which Carvalho can do; someone that can shield the back and kickstart attack, reason Fellaini, Morgan and Herrera have been tried there and it hasn't worked. Carvalho would replace Carrick immediately without the team requiring much change but with Verrati, there would still be need for someone in front of the back.

Carrick has completed 90 minutes in two consecutive games? Never knew this was possible. I'm sure the number one decision Jose will have to make soon is how to replace Carrick in that team. Hererra should be allowed to play b2b while someone else plays holding.

I wouldn't mind Carvalho for his replacement. I think he's the closest for that role.
