You went to Okearo and saw?? In Okearo, there is a farmer there who has a mighty boar that is 7years old and weighs over 300kg with no fat; its true but let me shed some light on issues you may not be aware of:

1. Most farmers who drive the jeeps are the ones eating off newbies and oppressing them to eventual frustration through their terrible antics.
2. Google and read up well on the subject of pig rearing. Even whites will tell you the truth that all pigs start and grow the same. Its when they get to a particular age that the exotic breeds start to shoot up faster. I have asked that why wait for more months when you can sell off your animals, make money and walk away??
3. I have visited farms bro, farms with updated biosecurity huh They sold in-sow to somebody for 65k but that exotic pig gave birth to 4 piglets. Mine average 9 and they are not exotic, so why waste my time??
4. Its criminal and wicked to sell weaners for 12k not to talk of the ridiculous amounts people quote around. My mom visited Songhai last year and got their contact number. Are you aware that they have a farm in Nigeria?? As at late last year, a whole Songhai had Camborough weaners of the purest breed for guess how much........ 8k. So what are you saying??
5. Before your pig can weigh those ridiculous weights you are dropping, how old are they, be sincere?? The man who has an over 300kg pig has kept tht animal for over 6 years. I went there with a fellow nairalander in February and they use those big old animals to scam people to buy fake weaners at exorbitant costs.
6. Aside our Camborough, we have another boar, a landrace that we acquired for 4,500 then when weaners were 3000. Its first crossing produced 9 piglets. Isnt that one of the aims of exotic breeds?? If my local female can give me 12 and an expensive exotic gives me 10, why waste my time?? Why not continue crossbreeding till i get a perfect lineage?? If you buy an animal for 15k and fatten, how much will you sell?? At least i have dropped a guideline of the costs it will take to bring them up to maturity....... Its a business and once its profitable, remove sentiments and do the right thing.

lagbaja:
I am into pig farming. Pig farming is one of the most lucrative arms of animal farming. Pigs are highly prolific, giving birth to an average of 10 piglets per farrow. Typically a pig farrows 2.5 times in a year. So in a year, a pig can give birth to about 25 piglets.

The biggest variable cost component in pig farming is feed cost. It accounts for about 70% of the total cost. Your ability to source your feed in a manner that is most cost effective is your success determinant. Typically, pigs have FCR in the range between 2 and 4 depending on the breed and on the feed formulation. FCR means feed conversion ratio. It is a measure of how much kg of feed an animal will eat to produce 1kg of live weight.

This the is formula I adopt for my pigs (Modified for Amino Acid Balancing)

50% of cassava ( I buy them Fresh, break them into chips, dry and store them)
30% pkc
10% GNC( groundnut meal) or SBM (soyabean meal)
6% blood meal
2.5%. Oyster shell/bone meal/ lime stone
0.25% lysine
0.25% methionine
0.5% salt
0.25% premix
0.03% (3g per 1kg bakers Yeast) ( probiotic)
0.1% H-Plus from Animalcare

The above feed formulation will cost you about N30 per kilo. 1kg of live pig is sold for between N280 and N300. If your pig consumes 3kg of feed to give 1 kg of meat, It means that it will cost you N90 to produce 1kg of live weight. Therefore you make a gross margin of N300 - N90= N210.

The other component of pig farming that is capital intensive is their housing. Pig housing has to be properly planed according to the number of pigs you intend to grow. You need to decide whether you want to do batch (all in all out) or continuos pig production (first in first out).

The biggest pig farm in west Africa is at oke aro , Agege. Another one is at Gberigbe Ikorodu. Accomodation costs at this locations are very high. I will advice you to site your pig pen close to where you can get cheap land and source raw materials at low price. Eg cassava plantations.

Technology application will greatly hep you in your pig farming. Fr example using, pig ni.ppl.es (see picture below) will ensure that you deliver constant and clean water to your pigs , it will also reduce labor requirements. You also need to construct a manure allay within your pig house so that when they poo poo, you can flush it away via the manure allay ( the manure allay is like a gutter).

femu:
This is not a technical article, am not an animal scientist nor vet doc so its just my rant based on personal experience. Also its not based on the typical rubbish dump pigs you’re probably used to, its based on Pigs kept in concrete pens for commercial purposes.

Investing in piggery is a good and stress-free business as female Pigs conceive twice in a year and can produce as much as 12piglets each time.

A piglet is sold between 3000-3500 Naira, while mature Pigs are sold based on their live weight(kg) multiplied by the going rate per kilo. Currently this is 230 Naira per kilo. Within a year you can have your pig weigh as much as 100kg if you feed it well.

Advantages over Fishery and Poultry.

Lower mortality rate- Pigs are not as fragile, they can still cope with some delays in feeding and water.
Cheaper cost of feeding- Pigs can be fed with a wide variety of products, like humans they are omnivores. Pig feed also costs lesser per kilo compared to Chicken and Fish feed.
Security- because most people have prejudiced opinions towards pigs they don’t even come close to them, hence the thought of theft doesn’t cross their mind. Some see pigs as a taboo.
Also pigs are highly uncooperative animals to handle, they don’t necessarily move in herds .
Diseases- pigs are less susceptible to diseases unlike poultry. Pigs don’t require any special vaccines. All they need is occasional vitamin supplement, de-worming and anti-bacterial treatments.
Easy on the pocket- if you’re very resourceful you can feed a pig with 50 Naira a day by collecting roughages(cassava peels, corn chaff)  in your neighbourhood. U can't dare that with layers or fishes. Also you can easily source brewery waste and palm kernel cake cake for them
More Profitable- In piggery, when selling a kilogram  is a kilogram whether the animal is Big or Small;whereas in fishery the fishes are sold at different weights per kilogram.
Facility conversion Incase you get tired of farming you can easily convert the pens to offices or accommodation. The designs are relevant. i doubt you can easily achieve that in poultry and fishery

Ofada is a generic name used to describe all
rice produced and Processed in the rice
producing clusters of south west Nigeria
named after Ofada, a small rural community
in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of
Ogun State.Ofada rice, has been linked to
protection against atherosclerosis, ischemic
stroke, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity,
and premature death. In addition to the
matrix of nutrients in their dietary fibers,
the whole-grain arsenal includes a wide
variety of additional nutrients and
phytochemicals that reduce the risk of
cardiovascular disease. Compounds in whole
grains that have cholesterol-lowering
effects include polyunsaturated fatty acids,
oligosaccharides, plant sterols and stanols,
and saponins. Ofada rice also important
dietary sources of water-soluble, fat-
soluble, and insoluble antioxidants.
The long list of cereal antioxidants includes
vitamin E, tocotrieonols, selenium, phenolic
acids, and phytic acid. These multifunctional
antioxidants come in immediate-release to
slow-release forms and thus are available
throughout the gastrointestinal tract over
a long period of time.
The benefits of eating brown rice such as
ofada rice are many and outweigh eating the
polished one. Most of the health benefits
attributed to brown rice are scientifically
proven and are not just a folk lore. What is
more, scientists indicated that consuming
brown rice is far better in the prevention of
diabetes as compared to white rice.
Ofada rice is usually sticky after being
cooked, and the aroma is one that has
endeared it to the hearts of everyone that
has set their lips on this african delicacy.
Ofada rice is savoured because its taste is
really unique and it tastes better than
basmati rice. It curbs diseases like diabetes
also.
Diabetes is a condition where the body finds
it difficult to regulate blood sugar. The
sugar comes from the digestion of starchy
foods like bread, rice, yam and noodles.
Increase in glucose level in the blood
progressively damage the eyes, kidney,
nerves, heart and major blood vessels
(arteries).
A 2010 study in the journal Archives of
Internal Medicine, which was the first to
specifically examine white rice and brown
rice in relation to diabetes risk among
Americans, estimated that replacing 50g of
white rice (just one third of a typical daily
serving) with the same amount of brown rice
would lower risk of type 2 diabetes by 16 per
cent.
But when white rice is replaced with other
whole grains, such as whole wheat and
barley, the risk of developing diabetes was
reduced by 36 per cent.
Ironically, eating brown rice is not associated
with ethnicity, but with a more health-
conscious diet and lifestyle after the
researchers adjusted for a variety of
factors that could influence the results,
including age, body mass index, smoking
status, alcohol intake, family history of
diabetes, and other dietary habits.
Brown rice is superior to white rice when it
comes to fiber content, minerals, vitamins,
and phytochemicals and it often does not
generate as large an increase in blood sugar
levels after a meal. Milling and polishing
brown rice remove most vitamins and
minerals. In addition, milling strips away most
of its fibre, which helps deter diabetes by
slowing the rush of sugar (glucose) into the
bloodstream.
According to a consultant endocrinologist,
white rice has high glycaemic index, causing
fat to be deposited in the body. The excess
carbohydrate, in turn, causes an increase in
insulin resistance of cells in the body.
Glycaemic Index (GI) measures how quickly
glucose (carbohydrate) is released into the
bloodstream after eating.
The body absorbs carbohydrates from
different foods at different rates. This
leads to varying effects on levels of blood
glucose and the hormone insulin, which
converts glucose into energy.
Because high—glycaemic index foods
increase blood glucose levels significantly,
they increase the body’s demand for insulin.
This can contribute to problems with the
pancreas (which produces insulin) that may
eventually lead to diabetes.
In addition, high—glycaemic index foods can
directly decrease the body’s response to
insulin by increasing the production of fatty
acids after meals.
Foods high on the glycaemic index, such as
rice and other simple carbohydrates like
white bread and noodles cause a rapid spike
and then a drop in blood glucose. But high-
fibre foods such as brown rice and beans,
which makes people feel fuller longer, keeps
blood sugar levels more stable.
. There are about 340,000 Nigerians living in
the UK with a potential demand for 120tons
of ofada rice. The fast food companies in
Nigeria are hungry for Ofada. The market in
the US, however seems to have an even
greater potential for growth than the one in
the UK.
Ofada Rice is packed with nutrients as it
contains well over 15 vitamins and minerals.
It is an excellent source of complex
carbohydrates, which are the best kind,
stored in muscles and gives us energy when
we need it. It contains high quality proteins,
especially when compared to other grains.
Rice contains all eight of the essential amino
acids (leucine, isoleucine, lysine, methionine,
phenylalanain, theronine, tryptophan and
valine) which help to build and maintain
muscle tissue and make up enzymes,
antibodies and hormones. Vitamin B1
(thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3
(niacin), vitamin E, Choline, vitamins B6 and B9
(folate); albeit nutrients such as vitamin K
and betaine, are only found in Ofada rice.

HealthOfada Rice (unpolished Rice /brown Rice) by ChrysoliteHaven(op): 11:08am On Nov 23, 2017
Ofada rice is also known as unpolished rice or Brown rice (brown rice doesn't mean it has to be brown in colour but means its unpolished). Hence, it can be white or brown/red in colour.

The smell of the ofada rice is dependent on how it is processed. Some have strong smell which some people like and others feel offended by the smell (one man's meat is another man's poison).

Ofada rice is Nigerian's locally produced rice. The major challenge with ofada rice is the fact that it has stones, this has made a lot of people lose interest in ofada rice, but the good news is that over the years, ofada rice millers have been able to resolve this challenge with the use of de-stoning machines. Ofada rice has many benefits both to individuals and the Nigerian economy as a whole. These benefits will be discussed in our next post.

How do I get rid of the smell of the Ofada rice? The first time we cooked it at home, it stank up the whole house. Someone told my sister we should wash with hot water and salt and today, that's what I did. It was a lot better, cos it didn't smell as much, but it still smelled. And I had to wash the thing so many times, more than 10 times, I'm sure. We are just trying to finish what she bought, so it won't go to waste. The rice wahala too much. And I don't know what the craze for it is about. Lagosians and fads!

Ofada Rice, also known as brown rice, is a local, Nigerian unpolished rice which is non-genetically modified. It is the short, robust and brown rice planted mostly in Ogun State and some other states in western Nigeria. The delicacy is very popular in the South-west region of Nigeria, but many who eat it, are not aware of the health benefits of Ofada rice. The rice is also good for those aspiring to lose some weight.

Due to my research on weight loss benefits from eating Ofada rice, I have come to understand the following - http://diet234.com/ofada-rice/

FashionRe: Do You Know About Hair Hygiene? by ChrysoliteHaven: 1:12pm On Feb 09, 2017
NNFems:
Do you know that your hair can suffer loss due to improper hair hygiene? Maintaining standards of cleanliness will definitely keep your hair looking strong, shiny, boosting your confidence and getting you ready to take on the world. These are some hair hygiene basics to securing a lustrous healthy hair.

Don’t just wash; know when to wash your hair: Washing the hair always can cause dryness or weaken the hair. Don't scrub or rub too hard as this can irritate your scalp or damage your hair. Always use a good conditioner after washing shampoo. Conditioners help to add moist to the hair, leaving it soft and easy to comb.

Low heat: You don’t necessarily have to use the hair dryer because of the damages it brings to the hair. You can leave it to dry naturally but if hair dryer must be used, it must be used at a low heat.
