5. EXAGGERATION: It is used to accent or over emphasize an action. The purpose is to animate something to the extreme in order to give it more life, action and comic relief.
|
4. ANTICIPATION: Action in animation usually occurs in three sections. The setup for the motion, the actual action and then follow through of the action. The first part is the anticipation. |
3. ARCS: Almost all action move in arcs in real life. Motions follow a curved path most times rather than in linear paths.
|
2. EASE IN AND OUT: it means causing an object to accelerate or decelerate or come to rest from a pose e.g a rolling object tend to slowly come to a halt with time or a ball droped from a height moves slowly at first but starts decelerating fast with time until it hits the ground because of gravity.
|
THE 12 PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION 1. TIMING: It is the speed at which something moves, and that speed can give it some features example the way an eye blinks can show moods e.g a lady winking the eyes can show a flirtatious mood, how fast a car is moving can show the different moods the driver is in e.g if a car is moving fast it can either show that there is emergency and the driver is tensed or he is drunk and in a merry mood, the car moving slowly can also show that the driver is in a relaxed mood etc.

I'll briefly explain the twelve principles of animation which any professional animator employs or must employ in his/her own workflow in the next post later in the day. For an interesting and fluid animation these principles need to be harnessed in any animation workflow be it 2d or 3d, so we'll have to discuss how important these principles are. You can search for the animators survivor kit and get the book although some of us do not like reading lolz. But the twelve principles where extensively explained in that book and its a must ve for any animator. |
images for cut out method of animation is shown below (see definition of cut out animation on my first post) source: Google images
|
IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGIES Frame: One exposure of filmstrip (check out my picture illustrations) Rotoscope: This simply means to trace a life action footage frame by frame. For example you recorded the video of your friend eating food, you can transfer the video to your computer import it into toon boom app and trace the movement of your friend in the imported video to create your own character also eating. It can be any character design of your choice. Disney animators and other traditional animators take a good advantage of this method. A graphic tablet is very crucial for this style of animation. Extremes: The beginning and ending of an animation also called key poses or key frames (check out my picture illustrations) In-betweens: The drawing that takes an action from one extreme point to another. (check out my picture illustrations) Scene: Continous action in a single location Sequence: A collection of individual scenes that tell a specific part of the story [img][/img] Picture illustrations of extremes, frames and in-betweens

naijatoonz:i like the way you sketched the movement of that character. For those of us that doesnt know the method used on that walk cycle above, it is called frame by frame or traditional method of animation. Naijatoonz basically drew each particular step to form series of steps that brought about the movement of that character. Nice one bro |
COMPUTER GRAPHICS DEFINITION Computer Graphics can be defined as follows 1. They are pictures and movies created using the computer. 2. Image data created by a computer specifically with help from specialized software. It is also referred to as computer generated imagery. 3. Representations or manipulation of image data by a computer or various techniques used to create or manipulate images. 4. 4. The sub-field of computer which studies methods for digitally synthesizing and manipulating visual content. And so many other definitions. Categories is 2D and 3D but the sole purpose of this thread is to fully understand the former There are numerous functions and uses of CG which include User interface design, sprite graphics, vector graphics, image editing and manipulation, motion graphics, architectural visualizations, digital art, animations, video games, web design and development, education, medical and scientific simulations, virtual reality, product packaging, graphic design, computer aided design (CAD) etc. Now our focus will be on the 2D aspect of the bolded. I have already mentioned the apps that’ll be convenient for me lols. But of course others like DerrickM, naijatoonz and others who’re still to come can definitely bring In their own workflow and willingly and freely teach others right here on this thread. I’ll briefly discuss on the important 2D animation terminologies that we’ll be coming across as the thread kick off in my next post |
naijatoonz:this is nice, walk cycle is one of the basic movements a beginner must get to understand be it frame by frame or cut out style. I'll discuss on the basics of computer graphics, and important terminologies later today like the keyframes you just mentioned because i'm sure some might not know what you mean. Keep the tutorials coming. Flash was the first 2d animation app i started with but left it for toonboom a shortwhile later. |
DerrickM:you're on point bro, i see our local animation industry competing with those ones abroad in the near future, and more creative minds're needed for that dream to come true. Imagine our own comic stories blossoming into popular lucrative ventures. But we must atleast try and tutor as many people that're willing to learn on the basics of this wonderful industry. |
Wow Naijatoonz i'm impressed with the images will sure check out these beautiful videos tomorrow. You're highly welcome to tutor us on your own workflows including adobe flash for those that'll surely need them. Follow DerrickM's advice on how to get toonboom software i recommend you get harmony. You can easily get it via torrent if the other methods prove abortive. |
DerrickM:. Other lower versions ofcourse are included the reason i recommended most recent version is because of updated tools that might not be available in those earlier versions |
Kunle106:ur processor been less than that wont be much of a problem bro |
Bekwarra:ironical mompara |
DerrickM:noooooo bro, lwkmd, i didnt mean it that way, please you're very free to discuss your own workflows like i indicated in one of my quotes to you up above, i was just trying to show you the possibilities of achieving an animation goal with less apps involved. I just care for those who might get confused if alot of apps gets involved. We have hundreds of them out there you know. But then feel free to introduce yours, we're all learning lolz. This thread is much open for brainstorming like you typed. I'm sure i'll also learn much from you. |
DerrickM:do u knw dat a professional 2d animation can be created with just toonboom harmony premiere pro and audition not minding the other apps u just mentioned? It all boils down to how creative u're. I actually have a youtube channel and working on an animation which i'll upload there this wk. I'll discuss my workflows that led to the creation of any animation i upload on youtube starting from this week, people'll also understand the basics as they tag along with the thread |
SYSTEM REQUIREMENT: computer graphics is a profession that embodies all forms of graphic design, visual effects(vfx) digital drawing and painting, compositing, video and audio editing, 2d or 3d production etc, and all these processes no matter the aspect u decide to venture into are very tasking on the computer system and therefore needs one or more high end computer systems depending on how professional you decide to go. The following specifications is reccomended for a smooth workflow as regards 2d. PROCESSOR: an intel or Amd with two or more cores and a speed of 2.0ghz and above. Intel is better because it doesnt heat up like an AMD RAM SIZE:4GB of ram and above HarDDisk: 500GB and above the last and most important requirement is the dedicated video memory which is needed to drastically speed up all your realtime processing and rendering in any of these softwares and it should be 512mb and above for 2d production and atleast 1GB and above for 3d production |
Recommendations on the softwares that should be used for this journey are as follows: adobe photoshop cs6 or cc, toonboom studio, animate pro or harmony (preferably harmony). It'll be an advantage if you also have the cs6 or cc version of other softwares listed on my first post up above apart from audacity which is not an adobe software. |
Dolemite:just follow this thread and learn extensively thats all for now |
Kunle106:i recommend cs6 or cc version also make sure to get atleast toon boom studio or toon boom animate pro. I'll discuss on system requirements shortly, u're highly welcome |
DerrickM:storyboard is nice but its tailored towards the big industries that consists of many animators. It has almost an endless possibilities to what you can do with it, infact it can almost be used as a substitution for animation software but photoshop is able to handle all our needs perfectly at this level, so that we'll understand better, besides i dont want to add too many softwares so as not task people's brain too much, although anyone can indicate if they're interested in other softwares not listed above so other animators who're good in them can help them. you're free to also tutor us extensively on ur own workflow as time goes on. |
Kunle106:check my thread via art, graphics and video section titled 2d animation learning thread |
Emmeritus:check this thread "2d animation learning thread" via art, graphics and video section. |
Polarbite:lolz wahala no go dey bro, just continue to follow the thread, also invite your friends that're interested, i believe we'll all understand better with time. |
Remember for you to become very good in what you do, u must be creative, passionate and hardworking. Animation is not easy (that is why an animated movie usually have so many people involved in the production process) and can be frustrating most times especially for example when you're not getting exactly a particular movement you have in mind, So you must possess the three virtues up there in order to scale through this wonderful, funfilled and lucrative profession. now some of us might eventually ask what a graphic tablet is, well simply put, its a device that have a surface and a pen which functions as a traditional paper and pencil for writing, drawing and painting on the computer screen, use google to do an extensive research on this device, the most popular brand is wacom although there're other good brands. |
Polarbite:it's not much of a problem bro, you can follow the thread to learn if you're determined. I recommend you start by looking for a way to get atleast toonboom software, you can start with studio for easy learning curve, i'll be giving extensive tutorials on those programs as we move along. A good artist and animator always start by drawing his ideas on paper and then refining and adding movement to them on the computer to create an animation. |
@DerrickM thanks bro, actually storyboard pro is off. Photoshop can be used for all our scene planning, as for after effects, i might decide to chip it in if it'll be needed for compositing and other special effects but toon boom harmony can handle all the 2d needs even some part of 3d also like importing 3d assets as fbx from maya to use as environment in a 2d animation, avatar the last air bender is a good example |
tosyne2much:hehehehe, she sees your joystick everytime and nothing has happened? I hope you see her cherry too? |
Op i been think say u be virgin as claimed on one of your threads, how come your gf knows the size of ur joystick? Abi ur joystick nah c buh dont bleep? |
i rather provide for a lady who can invest and turns my gifts into a goldmine with her wisdom and intellect than on a gal who'll end up using it for useless things like fashion, beauty and expensive gadgets they cant operate. |
