Politics › Re: Tax Bills: Tinubu Hails Govs As Ndume Rejects 30% VAT Formula by chucky101(m): 6:57pm On Jan 19, 2025 |
Ndume made a good point. If we want to go this route, we should go all the way. He's saying lets not stop at 60% derivation on VAT, let's extend the it to oil producing States (and other states for that matter). I don't know where you're from, but how would your state cope if the Niger Delta retained 60% of their resources? He also made a great point about the massive environmental degradation and massive sacrifice that region is making for the Nation. zero8zero: Ali Ndume is an enemy of progress, having failed to get the bills withdrawn, he is proposing a further reduction in the VAT derivation. The current derivation is 20%, the President proposes 60%, the Governors are proposing 30% , Ali Ndume is proposing 10% -13%. When a state generates income and receives 60% of it , what's wrong in that? but Governors are saying any state that generates income should collect only 30% while they share the remaining among themselves, even more sad is the illiterate Ali Ndume suggesting a mere 10% as derivation while they sit their lazy ass to share the rest. We are patiently waiting for the public hearing and what the Senate will finally pass into law. |

The Governors only made suggestions on amending parts of the bill so it won't seem like they conceded without a fight. It is not imperative that the presidency agrees to their proposed amendments. The bill will mostly likely still be passed as it was originally drafted with very minor tweaks. NaijaCowFarm: What are Agbado illiterates celebrating here?
70% of Oyedele's recommendations have been whittled down or thrown away. - Derivation is now only 20% instead of 80% - Corporation Tax - UNCHANGED - VAT increase - STALLED - 80% (50% -equity + 30% -population) of VAT still goes to POPULATION and EQUITY (North is the winner, while Lagos and Rivers lose) - All Institutions like TETFUND, NASEN, NITDA, etc - UNCHANGED
What exactly did TINUBU achieve with the Tax Reform Bills? Congratulations to Zulum, Ndume and Bala = These WINNERS |

Lagos needs to start phasing thugs out of its politics. This was why Ambode never had patience for the likes of Obasa and his ilk across the Lagos State politcal terrain. They have plenty of political clout but are completely clueless when it comes to the nuances and sophistication required to govern a state like Lagos. I'm sure BAT knows this and would never endorse any of them as governor, cause the moment one of these guys seats as governor, Lagos is going into a quick downward spiral.
The other day, when Obasa was touting himself as Governor he kept using words like "gods" "shrine" etc. This is the discourse language of a man steeped in idolatry , witchcraft and black magic and sorely lacking adequate intellect. |

Is Onitsha the only town in Igbo land? Why don't they go to Ogidi and other surrounding towns or settlements, bushes, forests and develop those places also? Igbos are the biggest migrants and asylum seekers in Nigeria. This begs the question, what is chasing Igbos from the South East? Why don't we see other geopolitical zones migrating to the south east? EmekaA125: Many Igbos fled Igboland to Asaba?? Lol Go to Onitsha and look for accomodation and see if you will see any vacant flat or apartment there. I don't talk like a mentally deranged person. |

Nnebisi's mother was from Nteje while his father was Igala(his name was Onojaoboni) . She was banished to Nteje (for crimes of infidelity) where she delivered Nnebisi, gave him an Igbo name and taught him the Igbo language . Nnebisi grew up in Nteje and later came back to Asaba to search for his father and when he returned he named the place 'AHABAM' in relief after all the discrimination he suffered in Nteje because he wasn't in indigene. He then subsequently married an Igala maiden (Ejini) and they gave birth to the two sons whose sons formed the five quarters we have in Asaba today. NB. Nnebisi couldn't have given Asaba an Igala name because he was raised away from his father in Igbo land. gidgiddy: The original settlers of America and Australia had names for their communities. Nobody settles anywhere and not give that settlement or community a name in the language they came with, it's impossible. If Igala's can remember they settled in present day Asaba, and have no recollection of what they called the place or community, it's a pointer that the story is false |

Many Igbos have fled Igbo-land to Asaba, but Asaba People are not Igbo, they are Igala, but the proximity to South East meant Ibo became the dominant language of communication. EmekaA125: Lol. First and foremost, there's nothing like Ibo but Igbo. If you can't pronounce the Gb alphahabet, then head back to Nursery School. Secondly, Asaba has been an Igbo dominated town with Igbo language being recognized as local language of study in all Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Schools. Thirsty, Abia State was never an Ibibio territory but Ibibio people were accommodated by Arochukwu until there was misunderstanding between them and Arochukwu people mobilized themselves warfarely with the help of Igbo clan in Edda(present day Ebonyi State) and chased Ibibios out of their land. So tell me how Abia State became territory of Ibibio who settled only in Arochukwu?? You are simply deluded. |

I don't think you should blame Asaba for the current travails of Warri. The 80's you're talking about had Benin as the capital of Bendel State not Warri. Warri is struggling today because of other issues eg. Insecurity, poor human resources etc. and not because its not the capital. AntiZikist: I blame you.
After developing that your backward Asaba with resources from Delta South you now have mouth to talk.
Where was Asaba in the 80s when Warri was booming?
Once you get your Anioma which you can all see the people of Delta South are really happy you are going for it, you will no longer parasitize on the rest of Delta South. |

I think to PDP just successfully completed rotation of governorship powers among the 3 senatorial districts in the State and its normal that a sitting governor would concentrate more on his senatorial district. Ifeanyi Okowa did more of his projects in Delta North and I have no qualms if the current governor decides to do most of his projects in his own district provided he doesn't fully neglect Delta North. That's just the way it is. WhizdomXX: The point in your number one bracket is true. Your number 2 is left for you to see, we are clearly being marginalized, with the votes we gave the state governor in 2023, how many projects are currently being done by the state government in Anioma land? The next points are valid. I am one of the proponents that Anioma state must not join the southeast if it is created. |

I'm against the creation of Anioma State for the following reasons : 1)I believe the diversity of ethnicities in the State helps to check the power hungry tendencies of certain elements like Ned, he is someone who would love to be the supreme power in a puppet state, which is what Anioma State would be if it is created (Anioma people tend to be docile) 2)I honestly can't see how the people of Anioma have been marginalised in the affairs of the State, Anioma hosts the state capital and there have been little to no agitation from the more prominent ethnic groups to have it reversed. 3)I believe we have more to benefit economically when all parts of Delta work together , cutting off parts of the state would hinder economic developments and limit certain options and I'm not talking about the oil and gas industry (many parts of Anioma also have hydrocarbons) 4)Diversity means we learn to check our worst impulses and adapt or learn useful traits and behaviours from our co-indigenes. 5)All native cultures of the different ethnicities are very much respected. The is plenty of mutual respect from all ethnic groups within the state and none seeks to subdue, dominate or ridicule the other. 6)I have concerns that Anioma State might be seen as an extra south east state or annex and I would not like Anioma to be classed as a South East state, where they would be further marginalised in regional affairs (Ebonyi state is a good example of what I mean, many Igbos consider them as fake Igbos). If Anioma is grouped with the South East, what we would have a complete opposite of my fifth point. WhizdomXX: Okay what are your views, are you for or against the creation of the state? |

Was the United States of America named the USA by the original settlers or was Australia named Australia by the original settlers? If the original settlers were wiser to the antics of the later Igbo settlers from across the Niger the Igala language and customs would be dominant in Asaba today. gidgiddy: You guys are funny. If the earliest setters in present day Asaba were Igala, there would be an Igala name for the place. Nobody settles somewhere without giving the place a name in the native language they came with
The 5 communities that make up Asaba all have Igbo names, and the original name of Ahaba is Igbo
So when you remember the Igala name of Asaba, let us know |
Politics › Re: Anniversary Of The Asaba Massacre -pics by chucky101(m): 8:27pm On Oct 08, 2024 |
Asaba is NOT an Igbo town. The earliest settlers where Igala, the proximity to the South East and the domineering attitude of later Igbo migrants made igbo the dominant language being spoken in Asaba. The general overall attitude and manner of the Asaba man is starkly different than your average South East individual. gidgiddy: Asaba is an Igbo town on the Western bank of the River Niger. It is also capital of present day Delta State. It is made up of 5 communities :
Umu-Onaje
Umu-Ezenei
Umu-Aji
Umu-Agu
Ugbomanta
Originally, Asaba was known as "Ahaba" and was founded by a man known as Nebisi who led some people looking for greener pastures out of Nteje, in present day Anambra State, crossed the River Niger, settled there and gave the place the name "Ahaba"(where we choose). However, the first European missionaries who arrived in the town mistakenly wrote the name as 'Asaba', and the name has remained ever since
On the 7th and 8th of October 1967, Asaba was to witness a gruesome massacre when the Nigerian Second division led by Lt Col Murtala Mohammed, and his second in command, Major Ibrahim Taiwo, entered the town. Many Asaba indigenes had fled as the Nigerian Army approached, those who stayed behind would witness violence on a scale that still haunts them to this day.
In a desperate bid to preserve peace, some Asaba indigenes gathered themselves into groups and went out to welcome the Nigerian Army. Some Asaba indigenes also believed they would be safe as Asaba was not part of Biafra. Unfortunately for those who went out, and many others, the Nigerian Soldiers opened fire, killing many. In the days that followed, the Nigerian Army massacred Asaba people in places such as Okwe, cable point, Ogbe-Osewa. Men, women and children were mowed down by the bullets of the Nigerian Army. Mass graves were dug all over the town and people buried.
While there is no official figures of the number killed, it is generally believed to be not less than a thousand people. Murtala Mohammed and Ibrahim Taiwo were never held accountable
As fate would have it, 10 years later in 1976, Murtala Mohammed had become Military Head of State, while Taiwo had become Military Governor of Kwara State. Both men where gunned down in cold blood on February 13th 1976, during the Dimka coup
Today, a monument stands in Asaba listing some of the people the 5 communities that make up Asaba lost in the Asaba Massacre |
